I have a HIS Radeon HD6450 based card. It fits nicely and is passively cooled (no fan on the card). So you have quiet as well. And definitely it routes sound through the HDMI. Only way to easily get 5.1 and better sound.

  • Why am I having buyers remorse about buying the N56????

Could have something to do with the lack of USB3 and HDMI out plus no sleep function.

Im thinking I should have just purchased a http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c… and connection to my old laptop

Please someone tell me I made the right choice

    • +3

You made the right choice! These are so flexible and adaptable. There's a reason these are so insanely popular amongst computer enthusiasts (e.g. OCAU and Whirlpool )

      Enjoy it :D

  • There is one possible reason to go with the N54L rather than the N40L. That is if you are planning to set it up as a PLEX server to stream media that require transcoding such as to iPad or android tablets. The N40Lfall just under the minimum spec Requirement.

I will try the N40L PLEX combo next week but not holding high hope.

  • 150W, it's gonna cost you a bit more in your electricity bill…the Synology may not be that powerful but certainly much more efficient.

    • +1

The PSU can output 150W, that doesn't mean the system will be sucking 150W ;)
You will probably find it more like <50W iirc

  • I am looking for a 7mm SSD, any deal on Samsung 830(7mm) SSD or Intel 520(7mm) SSD?

    • +1

I have a samsung 830. Best SSD ive bought.

    • Hi davidl2,

The Samsung 830 256GB is already on promotion:
      http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/?rf=kw&kw=samsung+830

      • $189 + $9.95?

cheaper to pickup locally, thanks anyway

        • No worries there. Sorry couldn't do the free shipping for this drive (similar to previous deal) as these limited stocks are brought in with higher cost.

  • @ kman1904

    I hope you are right

Ran a little custom build comparison, see below:

    AMD A6 5400K 2-Core Processor -$75.00
    ASRock FM2A75M-ITX Motherboard -$105.00
    Seasonic S12II 430W Power Supply – $75.00
    G.Skill Ares F3-1600C9D-8GAO 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 – $55.00
    ASUS Radeon HD6450 1GB Silent – $45.00
Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX DTX Case USB3.0 – $125.00

    TOTAL – $480 without delivery

So if you bought the N54 and added USB3+HDMI+RAM you would be looking at around $420 inc delivery.

  • Great deal, thanks for putting it together! This will be my first N40L, hopefully its a good one.

You mention in the info that the N54L's are out of stock until Wednesday but wondering how the stock of the N40L's are looking? Are they in stock and looking to ship ASAP or will they all start shipping out come Wednesday?

    Kev

    • Hi Kev

The N40Ls are in stock and should be dispatched today.

      Kind Regards

Thats great, thanks a lot. Looking forward to getting it!

    Hi All,

HP N54Ls have arrived. We will be doing the scan in today and dispatching process should start tomorrow :).

    • I am sure my missus would be happy to see another Microserver in our place.. NOT!

      • +2

LOL..It seemed to me that for most people: it's not about finding reasons to buy the microserver, but finding the reasons to explain the purchase.

    • Soooo tempted, I've got 4 x 3TB drives currently not in use, a N40L or N54L would be a suitable home for them no doubt. Arrrgghhhghhhhh.

      • +2

Chants "one of us, one of us".

  • I would recommend the N40L without hesitation; I bought one a few weeks ago from shoppingexpress on the previous offer. If you're not adverse to getting under the hood, it is a far better deal than any NAS box, including my QNAP 412. Servers include minidlna, mysql apache etc.. SABnzdb is in there as well.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (headless) 4 X 2T plus the 250G as the boot drive. I bunged a $20 USB 3 PCI-e card in and attached a 4 bay storage device with 4 X 2T in it. The N40L syncs to it. Webmin provides an excellent remote admin CP.

    I've given up on RAID-5 etc. since it isn't a backup strategy anyway. I've formatted LVM/ EXT4.

Performance is more than adequate for every day use.

If I sound pleased and smug about it it's because I am.

The N54L offer sounds tempting, but for now I don't see the point. The N40L is more than adequate.

PS: SHoppingExpress delivery was reliable & prompt.

    Cheers

  • Hey all. I'm still unsure about wether to get an N40L or N54L.

I'd like something I can chuck a few random HD's into (and MAYBE) look into raid in the future. I'd also like this thing to be a torrent box and run XBMC to TV.

Would the N40L base be able to fit these requirements or do people think it'll choke? If the N40L would be ok I'd rather spend the extra money on the "HIS Radeon HD6450" and MAYBE a TV tuner (if these work well with XBMC)?

    So in summary I'm thinking:

    N40L with few SATA HDs
HDMI out to TV with HD6450
TV has SPDIF to 5.1 channel speaker system.
If I get a tuner, I'd never need to change TV input except for a games console. Otherwise just run everything through XBMC…

Has anyone got a similar setup or failed to make this work?

    • My N40L works for all this but with win7 runing usb tv tuner through windows media centre. Never used xbmc with tv tuner, just movies.
if windows, get another 2gb of ram.

Double check what 6450 you use, some heatsinks are too large. I opted for one with a fan as they are still quiet but have smaller heatsink.

    • This is pretty much my setup except I run the HDMI to my Receiver and it outputs to the TV. This way I could also enjoy 7.1 since SPDIF maxes out at 5.1.

      My N40L is:
      1. 5x 3TB drives (WD RED) + 1 SSD (boot drive)
      2. KWorld Dual DVB-T tuner (499T)
      3. HIS Radeon HD6450 (it has the low profile bracket)
      4. OS is Windows 8
      5. Windows Media Center (PVR/TV) and XBMC 11 (Movies/Streaming Video/Downloaded TV)
      6. uTorrent and Sabnzbd (Usenet and Torrent downloading)

Current uptime is around 2 months. I've only rebooted for Windows patches.

I have noticed that the dust does build up so I'm going to get a can of compressed air to keep those vents clear. This box is packed and I don't want heat killing things prematurely

      • Thanks for that.

Still undecided about linux vs windows… I'll work it out though.

My reciever doesn't have HDMI in but as I only have 5.1 speakers it won't be an issue (I'll keep that note in mind though)

I can't find the HIS HD6450's anywhere. Just keep finding asus/msi which seem to have fans and don't mention low profile brackers…

I'm excited about getting this little fella going now… will have to check out the tuners

  • Hi Rep, my order status has been at "Pick" since yesterday. Is that normal?

    • Hi getsharp,

All orders paid will be in pick. Status will change to ""pack"", followed by "dispatched" if your order has been packed and submitted to Australia Post. A dispatch notification email will be send automatically to you once the order has been dispatched.

      Kind Regards
      Shopping Express

      • OK, thanks for that.

        • +1

No worries :). I know you are excited about this order so just to let you know: We target to dispatch all MicroServer orders by today :).

  • Just got the N54L shipping email, probably wont get it until Monday.

  • Thought about cancelling my N54 order but thinking I may just keep it as an experimental server ;) so much info online so looking forward, just have to hide it from the other half ;-)

    • swap it around with the N36L/n40L, she wouldn't notice! LOL!

  • with the deal expiring tomorrow, does that mean tomrrow is too late?
    " Until 17/01/2013 (Expires Tomorrow) "
…or does that mean the 17th is the last day you can purchase?
    Thanks

  • Finally got one for my usenet box. :) Now to explain to my housemate as to why one person could possibly need so many "computers" (high spec'd desktop; 3 laptops running different OSes, a macbook and now a microserver).

I also got a 2TB barracuda as they seemed to be priced pretty decently (on sale). Anyone know whether there'll be issues with a WD green 1.5TB and a Barracuda 2TB running on the same machine if JBOD is used (or can it be used)?

    • +1

No issues with the drive. Just make sure you use the wdidle utility on the Greens otherwise their ridiculous idle sleep setting will kill your drive in < 3 months (it was spinning down in a few seconds and then spinning up again). JBOD is fine and you can go upto 4 TB drives as well. Since I want more confidence and reliability from my drives (+ warranty) I went with WD Reds.

Don't explain to your housemate. Just enjoy the systems for what they are. I once had 9 systems in a room but had to retire them. Right now in this household (only 2 adults):
3 laptops + 2 Microservers + 1 ancient mid-tower PC (just doesn't die and it has a serial port and the DVD burners).

      • Thanks for clearing that up mate. I think I'll use the WD Green as a backup drive. :)

WD Reds are ridiculously expensive though. I'll take a plunge once I find some decent prices. Pity the Samsung Spinpoint F3s were retired. Great line… at par with WD Blacks in terms of performance and reliability and a fraction of the price ($70 for 1TB drives 5-6 months ago).

As for the housemate situation, I need to get my own place. ;) Would love to start investing in some serious poweredge racks eventually (ESXi cluster).

        Cheers

  • My HP microserver N54L arrived today with a orange light and no 250gb hdd included?

    • I'm pretty sure it was only the N40Ls that came with the HDD. Dunno what orange light means but given it doesn't have an O/S a blank disk might not have changed much…

      • The details page of the N54L does seem to indicate it comes with the 250GB drive.

        Internal Storage Devices
Optical Drive Optional: Half-Height SATA DVD-RW drive
Hard Drives 1x250GB NHP SATA 7200 rpm Drive

        • Hrrm, you're quite right! I thought I read somewhere they weren't included.

        • +1

Searching on 712969-375 it does look like this is a 'no HDD no OS' model.

However the specs posted above in the deal itself also indicate there should be a drive included:

AMD Turion II Neo N54L (2.2GHz)
          2GB Ram
          250GB Hard Drive Included

          I'm … confused.

        • I sure hope the 250GB hard drive is included. If it's not, I would have preferred to get the N40L for $219.
I can justify $80 for the extra CPU clock speed, but not $80 + cost of a new OS hard drive.

    • Have you checked all four removable caddies? From memory it should be in the #1 spot, left side looking at it from the front. It's not mounted inside up top if that's what you were expecting.

Also, please clarify what you mean by orange light? If you've plugged it in and you get an orange light, that's correct as it's not turned on, it's just letting you know it has power. Press the power button and it should go green.

      • They were all empty, nothing, no drive at all :( checked box but nothing. On the website it says
And the orange light was because one cable was badly connected. Probably they rushed it when they assembled it.

and also the SE website says 1x250GB NHP SATA 7200 rpm Drive.

    Hi ewanw,

Thanks for posting on ozbargain. We've just opened up 1 box and confirmed that there was no HDD. Currently checking with HP if they were wrong batches or just listing error. Will update again shortly.

    Kind Regards
    Shopping Express

    • +4

      Updates:
The HP N54L MicroServers do not come with any 250GB Hard Drive installed.
HP has confirmed they did not bring in any 250GB versions yet - any on the market will be add-ons from seller.
There was a listing error on the post & we apologize for that.

We will offer the following solution:

Receive a $20 Store credit on your ShoppingExpress registered account. You need to PM me your order ID and your shoppingexpress username so I can allocate the $20 store credit to your account. If you bought under a non registered account, you need to create a registered user account and include that in your message. Store credit will be activated shortly after your have provided the information, with instructions on how to use the store credit send to your ozbargain account.

      Kind Regards

  • Is the 2Gb of RAM in the N54L in one or two sticks?

If it's in one stick, what RAM would be suitable to purchase to match for 4Gb?

I'm trying to find list of HP recommended memory and I can't find anything. I'm only after 4 or 8 Gb of RAM and am trying to find a cheap option.

  • Hmmm, So the issue with the missing hdd in the n54l was a listing error right? Cause I didn't get a hdd either with my n54l.

  • I have 6450 installed but the volume control shows disabled and won't allow to adjust the volume. Went to Asus site and found no audio driver. Any suggestion?

  • I'm hoping very much (expecting?) the N54L that I purchased includes the HDD. I believe that was the deal when I clicked buy and transferred my funds. I haven't received anything yet (but only purchased a few days ago).

    • So I am.

      • I also thought that as per SE website 250GB hard disk was included with N54L, when I placed the order. However I received N54L without any disks. I shall wait for rep's comment if this is a listing error or a wrong batch. Installed a spare 500GB disk, installed ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS.

  • Dammit my workmate and I were just about to order it today, SHOOT!!!

Please extend the discount for one more day! ><

    • Just check OzBargain regularly or join the HP Microserver page on FB. Then you'll know when the next one is on. They show up about every 2 months or more frequently. It'll usually be ShoppingExpress but once in a while more than one vendor clears out Microserver, the best I saw was 3 vendors selling them within a $20 range of each other (HarrisTech, ShoppingExpress, and ITTech). N40Ls should be in a sweet spot now ~190-$210 with the N54L about $50-$100 more.

  • Question, for anyone who goes the windows route, do you usually just share the disk so all other device can access it or is there a more professional way of doing it?

    • Usually you set your media server up as uPNP and then other clients on the network discover it (mobile phones too). You don't need to open a share manually this way.

Media servers: XBMC, Windows Media Center.

  • So anyone in WA received theirs yet?

    • +2

My 54 has been "in transit" to WA since the 16th. No delivery yet.

      • Thanks mine has been the same so i was starting to wonder if it had fallen off the truck. Just slow travel across Australia i guess :)

        • +1

You guys beat me to it! I've been watching the aus post website like a hawk. My guess is they've strapped it to a camel and sent it on its way across the nullabor.

        • Nothing here yet either, just called Auspost, they noted it should have been delivered at the latest 23/1/2013 and it is now overdue.
Auspost said to call shoppingexpress so they can contact their account manager to launch investigation.
Saw this after the call :S

        • ooer not good. fingers crossed for a delivery tomorrow.

    • I got mine the day before (i.e. Tuesday). I had ordered on 16th.

      Hope that helps.

      Slightly OT:

Guys, where do I get screws to mount additional HDDs (the case comes with only 4)? I have a bunch of HDD mounting screws but they don't sit flush against the mount as a result, the damn mount+HDD doesn't slide into the enclosure.

      • +1

Look on the inside of the door.

        • The link is broken… but I followed your instructions. Dang! I feel like a proper idiot now. :P There are more screws that I'll possibly need.

In my defence, they were painted black. ;)

          Thanks a ton mate.

        • +1

Don't feel too bad about not finding them, I only noticed by accident with my first microserver and I'm sure countless others have also missed them for the very reason you mentioned, black against black does make them hard to spot.

I wish they were just normal screws though, using the provided tool can be finger destroying if you need to take all 16 out of the door and then put them into drives and you can't find your T10 driver or bit if you have one.

The link is off to an image I found of the inside of the door - http://mtekk.us/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/IMG_1182-580x386.… and it still works as far as I can tell. I only linked the full stop as it wasn't really necessary to include a link, did so only because I actually managed to find a relevant image.

        • Completely agree! :) Thankfully I got one of those ifixit kits. So i haz everythings. :P

Image: 403 Forbidden (sorry didn't clarify what I meant by broken).

        • +1

How odd, image loads up fine for me. This is the article with the image in it, for no other reason other than to satisfy curiosity, see if this works.

          http://mtekk.us/archives/reviewes/hardware/hp-proliant-micro…

        • Article works like a charm! :)

          Thanks mate.

        • +2

Strange indeed, all I did was link to the image rather than the entire article and I do check that these things work prior to posting just in case there's blocks etc.

One more time just out of curiosity, now that you've viewed the article, try the image link again.

Side note, got my N54L yesterday (Thanks Rep!) and it's going well, evaluating flexraid across 5 drives at present. So far so good, as long as it delivers when things go bad which I believe it will. Looked into other offerings and while I think snapraid has potential, it just doesn't seem to be there quite yet. I'd rather not have to pay for a solution but it's looking like flexraid could well be worth it.

Want to thank everyone that supported this deal, as well as helpful ozbargain crowd for answering questions in my absence. For those that have not received the microservers, hope you can get it today. $20 Store credit has been applied to every single customer that have PM me/email us with regards to the N54ls. So hope to have your business again soon :P.

We will be planning our next HP MicroServer deal on ozbargain soon - for those that missed out this deal. Hope we can continue to get support from existing customers and bring the MicroServer deal to more people's attention. It deserves a spot in every Australia's household doesn't it?

    Cheers
