Damn. $299. That's a pretty good price for the new model! Does anyone in the west want my new unopened N40L? Might put it up on gumtree or something.

  • The N54L finally looks like it has some serious grunt power with the more powerful CPU - shame that this however still is limited to 8gb of ram - 16gb would have been nicer and allowed one to virtualise more guests.. Either way great to see it's now for sale, and a good price to boot :)

    • its just the old one with a speed bump

the old one was fast enough really so its just an improvement noone really asked for

    • I'm not sure 'serious grunt power' are the right words for that CPU. A speed bump it might be but don't go trying to do anything taxing on it like transcode video on the fly etc.

      • Hi Yanman… I guess the term serious grunt is relative and in retrospect probably not the best term I could have used. Compared to the first generation HP micro server it's certainly a big step up and serious compared to that.. Compared to an i3 it could not compete…

        • Unless the i3 is the U 380, the slowest i3 on CPU Benchmark. Then it may even be very slightly faster :)

      • My N36L can actually transcode 1080p through PS3 Media Server very well.

    • +4

Specs say it's only limited to 8gb, but if you get proper ECC memory then it will see 16gb each time.

Here is proof on my N40L

Thank you for that - the news has just made my day… with the extra ram I will be able to run an extra 3-4 vm's and take over the world and enslave all humanity (present ozbargainer's excluded).

On a more serious note I will shop around and see what I can find price wise of that memory - last time I checked it would have added too much to the cost of my server to make it feasible.

    • I installed 16G memory to my N36L, some information for your reference:

      G.Skill Value Series 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3 RAM F3-10600CL9D-16GBNT

  • N54L already out of stock!

    • You can still order tho, they're not in stock, but will be this week. Basically you create a backorder. I think.

Megabuy bought all the stock. Nek minnut, reselling it for $599.

SE Rep, the coupon Code is only bringing the price down to 380.50 on the N54L…. ??

    • +1 same here, whats the go?

    • thanks guys - fixed up the listing

  • Just playing with the 54L in my cart, coupon isn't taking it down to $299, or Removing Shipping. Just a heads up.

    • thanks PonyTable, already fixed up the price and estimated dispatch period

  • Other than the upgraded processor from 1.5GHz to a 2.2GHz is there any difference in the N40L to the N54L?
I'm surprised that they've done an upgrade and not changed the USB from 2.0 to 3.0, I've found the processor in my to be more than capable (N40L and my dad has a N36L which is fine too).

    • The general consensus on Whirlpool is that if you already have an N40L its not worth the upgrade

      • This, there is no difference bar upgrade CPU.

    • +1

Your power bill will see a 25 watt power draw over a 15 watt draw.

      • I understand those are the maximum power draws for the CPUs. I don't know how they compare for the same loads. I suspect that the newer N54L would more efficient for many loads, but I haven't found any data to confirm or deny this.

  • Can the N40L run a USB twin-tuner in Windows 7 Media Centre?

    • I run mine with a play tv which is a twin tuner, works perfectly.

      • Hey rekabkram, do you mean to say you have the Sony PlayStation Play TV working with your N40L? Any advice as to how you got that hooked up and working? Thanks!

        • +1

I run a twin usb tuner in a usb port that works fine in WMC. I believe you can use play tv by googling the software drivers for win 7 for play tv.

    • Yes it can. I've had this setup for the last 4 months. It works very well (i.e. record two programs at the same time). My setup also has XBMC and there is a nice XBMC/WMC switcher program that will let you use your remote to switch between the two. I'm waiting for XBMC 12 to go final and then will check it's PVR/Live TV features. I tried PVR/TV on XBMC 11 but it was slower and less reliable than WMC.

  • Cart is trying to charge me $12.95 for shipping. I included 4GB RAM - when I remove that, shipping goes down to $9.85.

    • remove it all from the cart and start again and it should work, minus the RAM. Keep in mind it still charges you shipping, but the discount code gives you a credit for the discount plus the value of the shipping.

    • have you tried the following steps:

Add any of the above products to your shopping cart
      - Enter Postcode inside your shopping cart and click apply
      - Enter voucher code: MICROSERVER and the associated discount will apply (check right side of the shopping cart for the total value
      - Proceed to checkout and make payment once you confirmed the total price is correct

orders are coming in $219 & $299, so i suspect you skipped one step

Thanks ShoppingExpress! Getting the N54L now. Any of a deal on 3TB green/red drives to fill up the microserver? Or an 8GB RAM deal? :D

    • Thanks for your support :). Currently we cannot do further discount on our Drives or Ram from our existing web price.

      • Thanks for the ongoing deals for the OzB community :D No worries on the existing prices, but any possibility of free shipping at existing rates? If I add a red or green 3TB drive to existing order, it adds the cost ($135/$182) plus $8.75 shipping to my location.

        • As most likely we are sending our the drives/ram seperate with the MicroServer, it cost us extra to actually send those options. So for this instance, we can't do further on the freight charges. Our freight charges for 4 x hdd and 1 x hdd are the same, so I guess that is as Fair as we could do on our end.

        • When I bought a server, ram and video card before it was all put in the same box… heaps of room in these boxes for accessories.

    • Does a >2TB drive work with this?
Am I reading the specs correctly?

"Maximum internal SATA storage capacity of up to 8.0TB (4 x 2TB 3.5" SATA drives)"

      • +1

3TB Greens work fine with the N40L. Should work fine with this too.

      • I have put in a 4 TB Hitachi and about to put in a second.

      • It handles 3TBs no problem. My N40L is 5x 3TB WD Reds. With Flexraid I have 10.9TB usable space (13.65TB total without FlexRAID). Now that 4TBs are reasonable you can go higher. I just think your boot drive needs to be < 2 TB if you are using MBR boot record. If using UEFI then I think you can have > 2 TB.

I can't believe I've actually thought —> Is 10.9 TB enough. Gotta start planning my 20TB jobbie.

  • +1

Rep, do you have N54L without HD? and perhaps an option to bump up the memory to 4GB?

  • So I am looking to buy a server but don't actually one yet - is it worth spending the extra $50 for the new model from the start? Or really on a practical basis is it going to make no difference?

    • You probably wont need the extra CPU grunt on the new model, unless you plan to do a lot of things at once on it. But for an extra 80 bucks… I think its a good price. Gives you more headroom in the future.

  • +3

Need some 4tb drive deals to fill this baby up!

    • +2

trying to cut some deals for these.

      • -1

Rep, can you also cut some deals for 256GB SSD for this baby?
        Thanks!

  • +1

Crap why did I find this deal….was going to custom build a low power htpc/nas and now this deal comes along. Cant decide what I want to do now

    • I built a NAS, but then I have more hard disks than the HPs could take so it offered me much more versatility. I also have separate NAS and HTPCs.

I just think for about the same as the N40L you could get: Intel G860, mobo, 4GB ram, case+PSU (no HDD, but 250gb HDDs are basically giveaways these days).
For less than the N54L: Intel G860, mobo, 8GB ram, decent case+PSU (I'm talking like an antec 80+ bnz psu)

I recognise that it's not going to fit everyone's cup of tea (size, having to build it, I have no idea about the power draw of the thing), but for those who are planning to run a NAS, have a spare corner in the room to hide the thing and are willing to build it themselves, I'm not sure that the HP is as good a deal as the hype gives it. But then maybe it's just me under-reading demand for small compact pre-built things at a pretty attractive price point.

  • Hi Rep, any chance of getting free shipping on any SSDs?

    After 2x120 or 128gb drives - also ordering a N54L, great deal!

  • I'm waiting HP renew a product which support Raid 5 and USB 3. That will be perfect to run FreeNAS on it.

Until then, I still stick with my RND4000. Still waiting.

  • These guys - http://www.gamedude.com.au/ - have wd20earx at $85, $17 postage (4 items)
Just have ordered and paid, hope it is legit

  • Pay day tomorrow = Purchase day tomorrow = :D

    • +1

      if there's any left tomorrow…

  • Anyone know if the N54L supports 4TB HDDs? I have an N36L and from memory the South Bridge only allowed up to ~3.2TB or so for a HDD… Would love to buy a couple of N54Ls if > 3TB drives are supported :D

    • +1

Sorry, or even the N40L supporting 4TB drives?

      • Yes, I would like to know too. My disk space is filing up fast.

        From the spec:

"Maximum internal SATA storage capacity of up to 8.0TB (4 x 2TB 3.5" SATA drives)"

Does this mean 3TB drives are not supported?

        • I can't comment on 4TB drives but 3TB drives definitely work, at least on the SAS connected drives and the ESATA port (this is for both N36L and N40L).

Not sure about the single internal SATA port, I would assume yes but can't confirm.

        • I can confirm that I've got a few 3TB drives in my N36L, so I could safely presume that 3TB drives would be fine in N40L and N54L.

I vaguely remember reading that the South Bridge didn't support greater than 3.2TB worth of HDD in the N36L and I presumed that the same motherboard and chipset were used in the N40L…

However, I did a bit of Googling and apparently 4TB HDDs might be fine in the N40L. Would love someone to confirm that though :)

        • +1

I've got my 3TB in the 4 bays and they work in my N36L :)

      • +2

I bought 4TB Hitachi (Death)Deskstars and they work fine in the N40L - no modification done. (From the deal before Christmas at B&H)

        • Thanks mate, will be buying an N40L and some 4TB drives now :D

        • Same here (bought the 4 TB drives from B&H)

      • Yeah I know the N40L does. I know it has been tested on a mod bios but might work out of the box.

Just a couple of questions please..

    1. What is the approximate dimensions of the unit?

    2. Silly question, but realistically, running one of these 24/7 what would the approx cost per year in electricity be? I am running a 500w desktop form factor server in my house at the moment, as a web server and file server etc. I would be running most likely 2x 2TB drives in RAID1

    • 10.5 x 10.2 x 8.3 inch (26.7 x 26.0 x 21.0 cm) H x D x W according to this

    • I thought I read the PSU in it was only 150W?

    • As for question 2, it depends a bit, but assuming 25 watts constant draw, and 30 cents/kw, then around $66 per year (25watts24hours365days/1000*$0.3). Could be less than that, and could in theory be up to double that, but that's likely around the mark. Compared to running the desktop system you're describing, it _should_ be much more economical.

  • +1

Sorry for not doing any research, have to go and pick up the daughter…so… could the N40L just be used to surf the Internet and also store all my media library to be streamed wired and wirelessly? Like can I just chuck a copy of windows 8 on it and it's just like a basic computer?

    • +3

Absolutely. I just put Windows 7 on my N36L and use it to store all my media, as well as use it for a torrent box and some web surfing etc. One of the best things I've ever bought

      • Thanks, the info is much appreciated.

    • Yes exactly right, works great as a basic PC and Media center. Media Center, NAS and VMWare play boxes are the most common uses for this. It's also very living room friendly (looks like a small subwoofer).

  • Geez! i must live under a rock!!
what do you guys (other than personal cloud storage and mega backup space) use these devices for??

    • +5

I've got mine sitting next to my TV. I've got 4x 3TB HDDs and a single SSD inside with Windows 7. Mine's connected to my LAN. I've got a low profile 6450 Graphics Card with HDMI out connected to my TV and I've got XBMC running on it 24/7.

I've then got the XBMC remote app on my Android phone and I use that to control all my media playing on my TV. Essentially mine's a file storage server and HTPC :)

      • Same here! My N36L with 8x2TB under the TV running XBMC is ridiculously convenient. Next task is to set up the PlayTV on it to add some PVR functionality.

    • well you can share the files over a network, and therefore have a 'dump' drive for everyone in the house. That means nothing is downloaded twice, you can share your (legal) music collection on all devices etc etc

    • media box.
      Bluray rips are 35-45GB each.

      • why not just rip the full movie only? then it would be 10GB?

    • I've bought a few of these of the past year or so (strangely addictive little boxes !). One runs Server 2008 for a SOHO server, another has a low profile graphics card and sits next to the TV as a media server / HTPC, and I ended up using one as a kids PC ! I figure for 200'ish bucks is was better than a trip to MSY for a case/power supply/mobo/cpu/HD/ram/etc. and I didn't have to put it together. Has the added bonus low power consumption and being able to throw a few spare drives in it and use it for backups without tying up another PC.

  • My quiver of N36L's are still going just fine from that first batch that was posted here (the ones MegaBuy MegaBought out from under us). These are great little machines for the money. But even if they were half the price, there is no point upgrading to the newer models until I see USB3 and lower power consumption.

    • Yeah, my N36L is running great still as a htpc. Spent many hours over the holidays watching movies on it.

  • Just bought the N54L because it comes well under the price of a low powered system I was going to build. Don't tell the wife…

    • +1

Or maybe the wife will celebrate your good logic and buying under budget.. by buying herself a pair of 50% off shoes :)

  • Dammit I just bought the N54, been planing a custom build for ages, having buyer remorse already

  • Serious question. Am I able to host websites either the N54L. And would this do virtualization? Vmware with server 2008.

    • +1

You can host websites in any machine you want. You just need the right software. Whack a server OS or other software and boom, you have a web server. Whether you can get it outside your local network is another thing, and most ISP's dont like it if you try. You also will want a static IP..

EDIT: If you want to host a public website, for the love of the internet.. Get proper web hosting. It will be countless times more reliable, and faster. Just incase you were thinking of hosting um…moving on.

    • i thought these things were designed for virtualising chuck esxi on a usb stick plug it into the usb port on the mobo and off you go.. my n36l has been running freenas on that usb port for ever it seems.
      love the internal usb port

  • Hi Michalek,

Interesting set up buddy i.e. HTPC and File Server.
How are you processing sound, do you have a sound card installed?
How are the drives formatted ie Raid O, 1, 5 or JBOD. How much RAM are you using? What is the performance like compared to a PC?

    • Sound is through hdmi cable via a added graphics card that supports it.So save the extra slot for a usb3 card or something of your preference.Performance is fine for htpc/downloading/file server machine.Ram is up to you but you can just buy a cheap 8 gb kit from msy and it would work fine.

    • sapsec,

Sound goes through the video card/HDMI. I don't have 5.1 or anything external at the moment - just using the crappy in built speakers in the TV. You can get speakers to plug into the stereo out of your TV or alternatively, go HDMI from the HTPC into an amplifier and from the amp run a 5.1 and HDMI into the TV.

Or you could install a low profile sound card (or even a USB external) and route the sound through that :)

Mine are JBOD. I could do RAID but I run Western Digital Black/Red drives in the NAS to maximise the amount of storage space (I've got over 16TB worth of movies and shows). Once a HDD is filled, the data on there won't ever change so I take a 1:1 backup of it onto a Western Digital Green HDD and put the green drive into a fireproof box. I know that's a really archaic way of doing things but it works for me.

I've got 2GB RAM inside. So I use the 4 available bays for 4x 3TB HDDs. There is a SATA port inside which is spare - I ran a cable to the top of the box where the ODD slot is and put an SSD inside. There's a BIOS hack you can do to use the eSATA port as a 6th drive - I haven't done that yet.

The SSD runs Windows 7 with all the features I don't need stripped out. XBMC runs as well as UltraVNC server. UltraVNC allows me to VNC to my box within my LAN. VNC is similar to RDP but is free. I also then have a static IP setup with a DNS setup and the VNC port forwarded - this allows me to VNC to my HTPC from home and set downloads up etc :)

Performance is great. The 6450 card with correct drivers, DX11 and DXVA enabled is more than enough for 1080p bluray rips :)

      It's an awesome box :D

      • And here I was congratulating myself on a great buy that was going to make my life sooo easy - and then I read that. Geeze was that even english!

Looks like I got some reading up to do - sigh!

      • "The 6450 card with correct drivers"

Can you confirm which card this is? And you can route the sound through this HDMI connection right?
