You're a horrible person for making this deal. :( I know others will love you for it but now I have to resist the temptation again. :/

        • +2

          Guilty as charged.

        • -3

can u make it $199 shipped to adelaide. would def buy at that

  • Any chance of a RAM bundle this time?

    • added some option onto the post - check for updated description

      • Oops! Forgot to order 2x 4GB RAM with my N40L… is it too late to add them now?

        TIA

  • haha, competition !

  • +7

Good deal - I suspect that Harris Tech will be looking for a bargain on vaseline right about now! :p

  • Based on my last checks, it is possible to build a mini-ITX home theatre pc with 4GB RAM, SSD, USB3, HDMI and 3rd generation i3 for around the $330 mark. Would that not be better value for many people? (It's a question, not a criticism)
Great deal looking for a home server, of course.

    • sure, without the SSD. Or with the SSD if you don't have a storage drive (but what good would that be for a HTPC). For reference: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs_htpc

    • probably not good for power consumption?

    • What's your spec on that machine?

      • i3-3220, H61M-ITX motherboard with integrated sound, HDMI and USB3, Aywun MI-100 box with 200W power supply, 4GB RAM from somewhere, 60GB SSD. Depending where you are, parts can be from http://8lien.com.au/, netplus.com.au, vtechindustries.com.au, shoppingexpress, etc.

        • The problem is that your case can only accommodate 1 or at most 2 hard drives, according to the specs.

You'll need a file server somewhere to store your media (assuming 1 or 2 hard disks is not enough).

Good deal. Any SSD Bundle Special?

    • yes, add SSD Bundle please

      • +4

Actually we do have Samsung SSDs on special at the moment -

        Our other current running promotion:
        http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/view/Samsung_Event

        Samsung SSD Price:
        64GB - $55
        128Gb - $92
        256GB - $195

        • Thanks Rep. is there gonna be extra shipping charges for SSD?

        • +1

Nope - until you add so many extras that it goes over the weight allowance.

        • +1

Thanks. Just put the order in.

i hate SE, sold this to me a month ago $265+shipping :@ apparently that was the best price, obviously not

    • I'd hate to be in your position as well.
But they'll say "Prices change daily" to get out of this one.

    • I also bought one at $265 but I'm not going to complain. I'm just enjoying it way too much to worry about that price difference. It's great value at $265 as well. Now get busy building and using it.

I bought my 2nd one at $189+shipping, it's not set up yet (waiting for parts and cables to come in the mail the next 2 weeks).

    • Ditto. Damn you SE… :-)

The silver lining will be when all those people who bought at $199 find out that their 'bargain' is replaced by a more powerful model next week - and the price drops further.

Now, how can I justify a second unit…?

  • +2

sorry guys, just a question on microservers, whats the use of it and why do people want to get it?
    Thanks

      Network attached storage with FreeNAS

      or

All in one HTPC/NAS with Windows 8

      or

      homelab testing box.

      • +2

I've done the HTPC/NAS with Windows 8 with this server.

        My build:
        8 GB ECC RAM
5x 3TB WD Red HDD (this was the biggest cost in the build)
        OCZ 120 GB SSD
        HIS Radeon HD6450 card
        KWorld 499-2T USB Tuner
HP MCE Remote with IR Receiver

        Cables:
1 - eSATA to SATA (used to hook up the 5th HDD)
1 - MOLEX to 2x SATA Power outputs (1 for the SSD, 1 for the 5th HDD)
1 - 50 cm SATA to SATA (connects the SSD to the ODD port on the mother board)
        1 - HDMI 1.5 meters

Bracket: 5.25" to 3.5" to use a HDD in the ODD bay.

        Software:
        Windows 8 Pro
Windows Media Center (free until end of the year)
        XBMC 11.0
Special BIOS to enable AHCI mode on the ODD port and additional features in the BIOS.

Absolutely fantastic server and quiet too. Now busy filling it up with media.

        • Would this be able to run 3d bluray mov. Without any glitch with hd6450?

        • Yep, no problem (ive got the N36L w/ 6450 and i can run them fine)

      • Ie. you load a bunch of movies on it, connect it to ur telly and roberts your fathers brother.

    • +2

I wanted to know as well. So I could justify forking out 200+ before the wife rips into me.

      • It has good WAF (Wife Approval Factor). It's quiet, small, you can hid all the cables neatly behind it.

    • Mine has PS3 Media Server, uTorrent, and Crashplan. I store all music, photos, and videos on it (documents are in Dropbox instead). I simply use Win7 as the operating system as I couldn't be bothered with WHS or linux. Have 4 hard disks of various sizes in the drive bays and an SSD for the OS.

      • WHS 2011 license is cheaper than a win7 license

        • WHS 2011 is rock solid, but it's also unnecessarily convoluted IMHO. Unless you really need full headless server functionality, best for most users to steer clear of it! ;)

    • +2

Im using mine with Ubuntu with Zfs + Samba. Was previously using Ps3Mediaserver until my Ps3 died. Now sharing to a Wd tv.

Have 3tb store for media and a 3tb mirrored volume for photos and other important documents.

Also have Web server/database/Php running but haven't got round to using that yet.

Have the machine on constantly and it is completely stable. Current uptime is about 2 months.

I also use ssh to access documents/media when i am out.

Been waiting and waiting since the last deal.
    Thanks OP!!!

    • +1

Me too. Just bought one. Thanks OP!

    • +1

      thanks for supporting us :)

  • I'm going to ask in this thread and the other one, again. If anyone knows the ETA on the replacement models. We're seeing flush out pricing sales here and it's been over a year. I know one is in development but not much more - does anyone have any more information?

      1. It's not a flush out.

      2. Think about it:
        Now: AMD Turion II Neo N40L - Passmark = 970 Price = $199
        Soon: AMD Turion II Neo N54L - Passmark = 1189 Price = $????

Why wait? This is one of the least powerful CPUs on the market. If you're truly interested in waiting for marginally greater CPU spec, weighed against the risk of completely unknown pricing then may I suggest this is the wrong product for you!!

      edit: BTW I didn't neg you :)

      • +2

Even if it is a flushout, the price is still significantly lower than the entry price will be for the new model…IIRC, guesstimates were coming in around the $450-500 mark!

Bang for buck these will still win out in the short term IMHO! ;)

        • +1

The original came out at around 600$ IIRC, so I wouldn't be surprised if the new one was quite pricey too.

      • The prices were 250$ across the board for several months after the initial rush on them - now they are finally back to where they were 8 months ago.

The new model is NOT the N54L, I know this for a fact - that was a manufacturing prototype.

I don't care who 'neg'd' me - I couldn't care less about karma on this site, was just hoping for an informed response, thanks for replying anyhow.
Also, I'm not waiting - I own 3 of them.

        • +5

Dude, don't worry about negs around here, they're fairly meaningless…usually just means that the neggers want the waaambulance called! :p

        • The new model is NOT the N54L

Prepare to be humiliated in front of all of OzBargain :)

        • +1

Prepare to be humiliated in front of all of OzBargain :)

Oh, I think we've all been there at one time or another! :)

        • I've got no problem being humiliated, I've literally googled for hours on this, I've discussed with someone who has contacts at HP. The N54L was a prototype model, the screenshots of the N54L bios screen are from the test lab and accidentally included in the N36L and N40L documentation.

I can assure you, I'm all over this topic, it's looking to be intel according to my sources.

        • I was being facetious, being 'humiliated' by some of the clowns on OzBargain is like being whipped with a limp strand of spaghetti…let's just say it's not gonna leave any lasting damage! :p

        • Oh I love spaghetti!!

        • Everybody loves s'cetti! :)

  • how much power does this machine consume while idle?

    • i cant recall but check previous posts from older N40L sales… one guy went through the whole power consumption (great explanation) I cant seem to find it :(

but once you set the machine to sleep after no activity, it was less than 1 watt in sleep mode and then turn on wake-on-lan.

      • +3

My N36L running with two HDs and 8GB as a NAS consumes 27W in idle.

Peak is 43W with both hard disks spun up and CPU processing.

    • +1

Mine running 24/7 costs about $8.80 a month in electricity to run. Measured with a Belkin energy thing.

  • Just about to grab one of these but the can't seem to get the RAM for $19 a stick.

    • Seemed to be working from the orders coming through. Have you tried this?
add the HP N40L first, followed by the RAM
then apply code: N40L at your shopping cart

      • +1

My order went through with 2 of the RAM at $23.70 instead of $19. I have emailed you guys my order number. Hoping you can sort it out. Thanks.

        • +3

          Hi Tessa,

No worries they will definitely sort it out for ya.

        • +1

Worked it out. If you buy 2*$19 sicks only one gets discounted and then if you add 4 WD red 2TB drives it removes the RAM discount and gives you $5 for the drive discount.

        • I have the same issue - I'll place the order and let you know the order number

  • Are the WD Red drives worth the premium over Seagate Barracudas which are around $150?

    • For a server, yes.

It would be lower performance, but better power consumption and reliability.

      • There has been alot of issues with WD reds dying prematurely, not to mention the Red is a green with an extra year warranty and TLER (which is not needed unless doing hw raid) The ST seagates are quite good, ive got 20 of them here in running in two arrays atm and they are very good.

  • can we sell the 250gb back to you, OP ?

    • Just use it as the OS drive.

  • +1

Kingston 4GB ECC Ram (matching pair for HP N40L) - $39

hi all, i'm a bit confused here. what does this means? so if buying this ram am i getting 2 x 4GB ECC ram or 1 x 4GB ECC ram and 1 x 2GB ECC ram?

    • I'm confused as well, and want to know this before buying. OP, can you clarify please?

    • The existing RAm on the HP N40L = 2GB ECC Ram
      so if you purchased the 4GB - you received 1 x 4GB ECC + 1 x 2GB ECC (total)

      • hi OP, can u do a special for 2 x 4GB ECC ram pls? i dont need the 2GB ECC ram anyway…

        • +1

Sorry - can't do this time.

  • a N40L with a 250GB HDD for under $200 is good value.. any discounts on the delivery please!!!

  • Is sensational as a home server/NAS but as a HTPC you've got to be aware that its BIOS does not offer/support an S3 sleep mode - hence this will be a major problem for a lot of folks.

Very well documented shortfall - there might be a reasonable way to get around it but I personally can't imagine having a HTPC that didn't support some kind of sleep mode for FTA recordings.

Is a nice deal anyway. :-)

    • Does hibernation work? With an SSD it may be an ok compromise.

  • Hey Rep, I wanted to order 2x the 4GB DDR and it only discounts for 1 stick?

    • Yup, posted on description: $5 discount only apply once.

  • Can someone compare me with N40L to another Synology or QNAP NAS?
Microserver looks quite complicated… but cheaper then other NAS.
Not sure which one to choose.

    • +2

N40L is basically a PC, so you can run windows, linux, freenas, win server etc to achieve a lot more things than a standalone QNAP or Synology - In my opinion and experience anyway.

However the plus side is those devices are a little bit more "plug & play" than the HP because they already have their own dedicated NAS software installed, and you really just have to put drives in and build your raid array (if that's what you want).

You can still do a lot with both, and in fact I use one in our office the synology DS1512+, mainly because I wanted something that the other people in the office could support when I am not there, and it just sits there and works, the software they come with is pretty awesome, and there are a lot of 3rd party packages available nowadays that let you run SAB etc.

The thing that swayed me to the HP for home use was the "update-ability" as we all know how fast tech moves these days, so the synology could stop getting updates and most of the 3rd party apps are done by individuals, so if they decide to move on…goodbye updates to their apps as well.

There is plenty of reading that should be done on both fronts - google is your friend, but I doubt you would be disappointed either way you went.

Really depends on how much you want to spend, your level of tech ability and spare time.

      • I'm planning to buy one for family use, so I should buy actual NAS.
N40L seems to be cheaper and has better extendability, but seems complicated so…

  • Thanks, i bought something i'm not sure i needed LOL

    • Microserver + newsgroups account + your choice of a depositfiles/RYUshare/rapidgator account = best investment you've made in years.

  • Long time shopping express supporter here. Now if they'd just follow through with some mouthwatering mobile deals - expand your product range friends, there are profits to be had by expanding into new markets!

    • +1

Getting ourselves ready on this - will need support from ozbargain when that happens.

      • +3

        You have my sword.

      • As long as you achieve a better reputation than Shopping Square, you should be fine.

        • oh man. I thought this WAS shopping square. didn't realise they were a different mob. No wonder the shipping cost is so reasonable! ;)

        • This is a problem I've said shoppingexpress need to address. They get mis-attributed to a competitor (a pretty rubbish one at that) and there are ways they can fix this..

Hire me as your brand management consultant friends!

  • I bought this in the last weekend sale you had, but I'm a little disappointed that others got the 250GB drive included as a bonus, while I was penalised by ordering it with an extra 3TB Red, and the 250Gb drive was removed…

    • There are several packages from factory with / without 250 and optical. I don't think SE is stealing and reselling the worlds smallest hard drives

      • -4

        Well, they did.

The shipping advice showed that I was upgraded from the diskless to the 250GB version.

But my order arrived with the red 3TB already installed in the first slot in place of the 250GB.

There is no benefit to me lying about this…

        • Thanks Shopping Express, I'm happy with your solution.

  • Rep - how about doing a combo deal with a graphic card?

    • +1

      Hi Third_Gear,

      Sorry - not today.

  • Any idea how well they would work as a HTPC/file server? I'm thinking a USB dual-tuner with a HDMI video card could be a solution. Viable?

    • +1

90% of these are used as either HTPC with a gpu in it, or a NAS with HDDs in it.
      they work awesomely

      • So, what card with HDMI out, and which USB dual-tuner is recommended?

        • Shoved a Geforce 610 low profile in mine from MSY for $38,
was the cheapest low power HDMI graphics card I could find

The silent ones are just too big to fit unless you hackup the heatsink

USB tuners, I picked up 4 cheapies from dealextreme

        • +1

I got a HIS Radeon HD6450 with HDMI out and KWorld 499-2T USB Tuner.

Make sure whatever card you get includes the Low Profile brackets. The HIS Radeon HD6450 is passively cooled (no fan) and slim too so fits just fine.
