Competition is good, but probably worth waiting for V2G since it was just approved

    • +10

V2G is approved, however both the bidirectional chargers and the Car itself needs to support the standards. At present, none of the hardware is certified. I'd give it a year but if you're driving an EV now, it's very much at the mercy of the manufacturer, who will probably prioritise selling new cars rather than old ones.

    • Good call

    • +2

If you don't have a tesla i'd get a OCPP charger at the very least.

i'm excited for V2G but I expect the chargers are going to be quite expensive (quasar 2 is around $10k) and it's been going to happen real soon now for so long who knows when it will be actually available and supported by both cars makers and the power companies.

      • Now that the Australian Standard has been set things will change fast. The chargers that meet the standard will get much cheaper within 12 months

    • +5

Got quoted $8k for V2G charger

There's probably cheaper but I just put the money towards more battery for house

    • +1

Yes, but a key difference here is a cost of $5k-$10k for the charger, plus a compatible car. Currently only Mitsubishi PHEV and Nissan Leaf support it. That will change, but if you need a charger now it's way too early

  • I have a 32amp terminated(small grey box with big angled ON/OFF) switch on the garage wall when the house was built. Does any one know how much will an electrician charge to put a small cable to this ev charger?

    • +5

we had something similar, $600 for install of the Tesla charger

      • +2

As suggested i got a quote from revcharge - $671.70 incl. GST.

    • +11

Sounds like you have a single phase there so you won't get full speed of this wall charger. If you are having a Tesla, get the UMC charger instead and get a 3pin or 5 pin 32A tail depending on your existing 32A socket. This way, you have the flexibility of carrying your UMC with you during a holiday trip or something and you also get the same 7kWh as the wall charger. You also save quite a lot of money as you don't need installation.

      • +2

Nothing he said indicates how many phases he has.

If he went the UMC, he would still need to get a sparky to terminate the outlet (doesn’t sound like there is one at the moment, just a box).

I’ve got a wall connector and a UMC. Sure I could use the UMC at home with an appropriate tail and outlet, but it’s nice having a hard wired solution that is nicely mounted etc. Costs more money of course.

        • +3

I have my UMC mounted on a $3 hose holder next to a 15A outlet and it's just as convenient as a hard wired solution.

Not as fast charging of course but waaay cheaper and my UMC came free with the car.

Edit: Just noticed the great deal on the Ocular charger so I've put an order in :D

          • @eddyah: Yeah I had the same setup for a while, but ended up 'splurging' and no regrets. My UMC came free with the car too, and it's nice knowing it's always in the sub-trunk.

  • +1

And FYI, there doesn't appear to be any further discount on Tesla products for Powerpass members

  • +7

That Ocular LTE Three Phase 22kw wall charger /w 6M cable has to be a pricing error - perhaps it's supposed to be just the Type 2 cable and not the charger itself - it is in the "EV Cables & Accessories" section on the Bunnings site and not the "EV Chargers" section where all the other charger are

If I had 3 phase at home (and not single phase) I'd have given it a punt

    • Yep same! No 3P in my place either.

    • Can't even seem to buy it.

      • +1

I purchased through trade site. First payment failed but went through second time

        • did you do click and collect or delivery?
it would be great if you could share a decently priced sparky in sydney.

        • +1

I ordered some of the Ocular Iq 22kw 3p chargers, click and collect. Payment went through fine at $230 each. Interestingly now when I check my order status it shows I have just ordered cables, not chargers. Lucky I took some screenshots!

          • @bargainator9: can you please send me those screenshots? I'll PM you

          • +2

@bargainator9: Update, just had a call from Bunnings HQ, they screwed up the listing, they are honouring 1x unit at the advertised price, refunding the others. And said I can return the one I do get for a refund if I'd like also. Good customer service Bunnings, I'm happy with that.

    • +1

was about the get telsa one but now took a punt on ocular, will see if it comes.

    • +1

Doesn't it also support 1 Phase?

      • -3

Doubt it. Three phase is very specific from what I’ve seen.

        • it does 7kw single phase
Fronius watt pilot does this also on the 22kw 3 phase version

          • @adrian2093: OK cool. Good to know.

            Edit: bought

            • +1

@WhyAmICommenting: Double check the product specs
Just had another look it’s a bit confusing it says it does 32amps max per phase not sure if it will still do max 32amps on 3 phase charger running at single phase or not

              I’ve got a fronius and it does 7kw 32 amps even tho I’ve got a 22kw 3 phase installed

    • +1

I only have single phase at my home, but shouldn't it still work and charge at 7kW regardless

A Charger to Suit Every Home - 1-phase (7kW) & 3-phase (22kW) Models Available with either a Socket or a Tethered 6 meter cable with Type 2 Connector

      • Yep should be fine based on what it says
I’ve got 22kw fronius on single phase
As long as it’s 32 amps single phase should do 7kw afaik

    • I would have as well, I have 3 phase, but I need to be able to schedule the charging based on plan, so it's a no for me

      • Can’t your car do this?

My BYD is scheduled to only charge between certain times?

        • Yeah but the BYD implementation is a bit dodgy. My Seal only re-does the schedule if you start and stop the car.

    • Yes probably missing another zero on the end

  • What kind of installation costs are to be expected for installing one of these?

    Can any sparky do it?

    • +1

Yes any sparky can do it. No different to wiring an oven or spa etc.

Cost depends on how complicated the install is, how long the wire run is, and what state your switchboard is in. Anywhere from $300 to $3000 and beyond.

    • Would recommend revcharge, they have a fixed price policy. Expect to pay $1k ish for single phase installation, obviously it will vary on your specific property and install location.

      • -5

1k seems like way too much for something that can just be plugged in to the wall. I have one on order and I'll just install a mount and plug it in to a normal electrical socket. Sure you will have a wire dangling but you can probably tape it up.

        • +2

Are you talking about a proper evse like the Tesla and ocular, not the $349 arlec wall plug unit.

You can't just plug an evse into the wall, it needs to be hard wired on a dedicated circuit to the switch board, that's how they pull 7kw, your wall sockets are limited to about 2kw from a standard 10amp port.

          • @Tech45: I think if you plug a power board in you can get more. If you put in one with six sockets you get 12kw total. I have done some electrical engineering study, but it has been a little while (it might be 6kw instead of 12kw)

            • +1

@soaringphoenix: Wtf. Where did you do your study? Tafe?

If a GPO is rated at 10A plugging in a power board does nothing other than to split the current/power across the number of sockets the board has.

              Simple maths says a 10A GPO at a nominal 240v is 2.4kw because P = VI

No idea how you came up with 6kw or 12kw. No way is a standard mains outlet pumping through that much current.

            • @soaringphoenix: Lol, ok you got me the first time.

        • +1

I paid about $800 for installation, garage on opposite side of the house to my meter board. After a number of quotes most were 800-1200 for my property.

          • @geoffs87: how long did it take for the sparky to install?
did you ask them if they can be charged by the hour?

      • I got multiple prices for my charger install
Lots of ev charger supply places who also do installs were all $800-1000+ on installs
Fronius watt pilot installed around $2800-3000

Ended up paying around $2100 supplied and installed local sparky

    • Technically yes - but I'd read elsewhere that with Ocular (home) EV chargers the warranty is only valid if the charger is installed by an Ocular approved installer (which could limit installation to more expensive installers if you wanted the (2 year) warranty on the charger itself) - I've emailed Ocular to confirm if this is actually the case

      • +1

From their FAQ on their webpage

CAN I USE MY OWN INSTALLER? If you wish to use your own installer, they must be a fully qualified electrician. Ocular cannot be held responsible for any issues or failures of any products caused by the installation process or from a result of an incorrect setup and configuration. We highly recommend you engage one of our trained and authorised installers to ensure the unit is connected correctly the first time. All installers must be trained and certified by Ocular prior to installation or the warranty will be void.

I've also emailed Ocular to ask if this is still true.

        • +1

Ocular isn't easy to set up. Sure the electrical work is easy but the software configuration needs a trained installer or someone IT savvy.
It won't work out of the box and the sub contractor from EVSE had zero clue why the charger wasn't plug and play.

  • I'm interested in the Arlec UMC, but the picture shows 6/8/10A charging modes rather than the specified 8/10/16.

    • I visited a Bunnings in person and saw that the Arlec mobile connector only has a 10A plug. The DeWalt one has a 15A plug (larger earth pin) but that's one is more expensive.

      • Thanks for the intel!

  • +2

Special Ordered the Ocular for C&C at Armadale WA; fingers crossed.

    • How much would it cost to get installed?

      • +5

        Probably something ridiculous!
Sparkies charge like a wounded bull when it's anything related to an EV.

    • Did the same as you (granted I went single phased option), fingers crossed!

  • +1

Cheers - took a punt on the 3-phase Ocular! 🤞

  • +1

Just ordered a tesla and have a goodwe solar inverter at home. Tossing up between this and the goodwe.. any thoughts would be appreciated

    • +4

Only the Goodwe will allow smart charging from excess solar (assuming you have a Goodwe consumption meter)

The Telsa is a dumb charger. Works well (ie is smart) with an all Telsa setup (powerwall and Telsa car). But if just one of your things is non Tesla, it becomes dumb. This is from what I've read but do your own research.

Neither have OCPP but Telsa may gain it in an update

    • get an ocpp charger

  • Took a punt on the 3 phase Ocular too, let’s see!

  • Does it have stock?

  • +5

I have the Ocular Solar IQ. Installation of EV chargers is a rort. Pricing per metre of cable run is very high despite the extra effort being minimal and the actual materials cost to be dirt cheap. But hey that's tradies for you.

Unfortunately I haven't had any luck integrating with Home Assistant despite it being OCPP compliant. This means you're tied to their cloud service and app. Sucks if the business collapses and you lose any smarts. Also the scheduled start and end rarely works which isn't great if you're timing for free charging periods or low rate charging periods.

But for $250 this is a steal… Almost worth buying now for when you eventually get an EV. Can't even buy a reputable slow charger for $250. Heck even just a plug adaptor is $250

    • Which Ocular do you have?

      • Solar IQ

    • Bunnings have the install manual on their website. States this for the Ocular:

OCPP: 1.6J and 2.0.1 (Firmware upgrade required)

Maybe it needs a firmware upgrade to get to the right version?

      • Perhaps? The dumb app always shows a firmware update is available but when I click it nothing happens.

        Let me try again .

  • +1

thinking to put a 32A plug on the Ocular LTE Three Phase 22kw charger, keep it in the boot.

    • I already have one (a 3 phase charger) , and even driving Sydney to Melbourne there was no where worth charging. I didn't end up using it once. Unless you have places you know you cna use it, don't bother

  • Page on Ocular charger is dead. Good luck to those who got an order in.

Managed to find the link on trade website and purchased. Will see what happens.

    • Seems to be working now, just made an order.

      • Yeah only works if I click and collect from 1 particular store. The rest don't work.

  • Check your email order confirmations. I ordered the Ocular and everything in the cart said I was getting the charger, however the confirmation email says I'm now the proud owner of "Charger Lead & Ct Clamps 22kw".

    • +1

You excluded the part after that also said "++Ocular Iq Home Three Phase I/N:0708251"

There is the reference of the item number

    • just ordered as well, as the above comment.

I honestly think it should only be the cable, if I'm getting a wall charger as well it's a win.

      lol

      • If it's just the cable then refunds time

        • yup!

  • +1

I have a wall charger, would recommend

  • Does any expert know if I can charge a Mustang Mach E with this?

    • +1

      Yes

  • +2

    Wow some very cheap chargers!!

    • +12

      Ignorance is bliss expensive.

        • +4

It doesn't cost even close to double.

If comparing Tesla 3 vs Camry

The Tesla is a more expensive and nicer car.. more expensive cars cost more to insure.

For a similar priced car, an EV will normally cost only slightly more to insure.

          • -3

@Aureus: Objectively the Camry is a comfier car. Tesla wins in flashy gimmicks only, the seats are uncomfortable and the interior “minimalist” to the point it’s just basic.

        • Calm down a minute - you’ve got a point but jumping and down about it won’t help you make your case. They’ll think you’re one of the “ICE or death” loons.

I’ve got an EV, insurance did go up a lot. Most quotes 2 years ago were around $1k and now they’re mostly around 2k. There are still some insurers that haven’t raised it much. It’s different for each person, area, and car.

My insurance is about $1200ish for a 1.5 year old EV. In the groups I’m in, people are getting $800-3000. Definitely not the highlight of owning an EV.

But it’s been my favourite car. Insurance is higher but manageable. The novated lease tax benefits are pretty huge (BYO insurance and cut the extra junk they add in).

I don’t like how expensive they are but entry level models dropped 50k to 30k (also a “risk” with EVs, your car might depreciate like a Pinto, Commodore, or Cruze instead of a Camry). It’s new tech and changing fast. Not ideal for everyone.

          • -5

@enigma48: I wanted to get an EV but cant justify the insurance + initial cost and inconvenience. I have searched most well known insurance companies. My case= rating 1, doing 20000+km a year….. Insurance is $4.5k-8k a year for Tesla 3 and Y vs $1500-$2500 for a hybrid car. May be the insurance companies dont like me driving an EV ^_^
