CNN Review:

The Atari 2600+ is 100% effective at its intended purpose, which is to faithfully reproduce the experience of the original Atari 2600 from 1977. From the look of the console to the feel of the joystick, it succeeds.

IGN review:

An attractive, emulator-based solution to reliving the 1980s in the modern era, with a dedication to recreating the original experience that's both a blessing and a curse.

Games Radar review:

The Atari 2600+ is an awesome recreated version of the company’s iconic ‘70s console, and features like HDMI and original cartridge support make for a perfect blend of old and new. While some players might want more from this straight-talking revamp on a software level, this new system provides easy and instant access to classic carts using accurate emulators. It’ll also make for an excellent collector’s piece for retro game enthusiasts with a soft spot for wood grain.

P.S. Some nostalgic facts about the year 1977;

  • Atari 2600 came out 9/11
  • First Star War movie released
  • Radio Shack introduced its new TRS-80 Micro Computer
  • Apple II released (Apple's first computer aimed at consumers)
  • Elvis died has left the planet

The system comes with a CX40+ Joystick which has been lovingly recreated to the same specifications as the original

    So it breaks after 5mins?

    • +3

Which would you rather have, a semi functioning joystick or an unstable c64 tapedeck?

      • +1

The tape deck comes with a small Philips head to adjust the tapes.

      • +3

The c64 joysticks I used, Quickshots, while nice designs were not very durable unfortunately.

        • +8

Especially if you played something like Daily Thompson s Decathlon. That game destroyed all my joysticks and gave me RSI and carpal tunnel all at the same time.

        • Speedking ftw, I have a few here and they still work!

        • 100% agree.

    • +2

Are you kidding? They're bloody indestructible. Mine survived the infamous 80s summer family visits / riots and still work today.

      • He is right, the original Atari ones always failed on the left movement.

    • +1

More likely your hand would break in my experience. They were much stronger than other controllers of the era.

    • The CX40+ Joystick is the best recreation of the original joystick that I have ever used, so much so that I do not use my original ones any longer (yes they still work perfectly after 40+ years).

The only issue I have with this fantastic device is that I don’t believe its possible to play games off an sd card…

As someone who purchased this on release at its full price, this is an awesome deal.

The system has its faults but, especially if you have a collection of old Atari 2600 cartridges in a cupboard somewhere, you can't go wrong for this price.

However also be aware of the recently released Atari 7800+ which also plays old 2600 cartridges too and which most likely is a driving factor of the discounts on the 2600+.

I have resisted the urge at buying the 7800+ for $185 though when likelihood is that it will be subject to similar deep discounts in a years time.

    • Thanks mate, Just wondering are there any big difference between (technical specs) 7800+ and 2600+?

      • +2

The hardware itself is identical. Although there is an improved cartridge slot (but the 2600+ is fine).
The 7800+ also comes with a wireless 2-button controller. The 2600+ has a wired CX40+ joystick.

The CX40+ isn't suitable for 7800 games (as it only has one button). But both consoles play both 2600 and 7800 cartridges.

    • +2

Agree, it's a great system. But the pre-installed firmware sucks, especially for PAL cartridges.
You need to update it following the instructions on the Atari Age website.

But once updated, it's awesome. Basically a Atari 2600 that works on a modern TV.

      • I had been procrastinating from updating the firmware but your comment sprung me into action. Achievement unlocked!

  • +4

    wait a sec… i thought there are 2600 games

    • +1

The snes didn't even reach that Pinnacle.

    • Should have called it the Atari 666. My parents thought it was pure evil. For the record, there are only 517 games with just 127 made by Atari.

  • Does anyone know a good, similar system for playing Atari style games for kids, but maybe more compact and with more games? Recreating the original console or experience is not necessary in my case - my kids never got to play with the original anyway

    • +5

There are plenty of "retro game consoles", which I imagine is essentially an Android TV stick with pre-loaded emulators and games:
      https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006861190021.html

      • This one ticks all the boxes, thanks for the link

        • +1

Be careful with this one. I have one and it works, until it doesn't. Frequent shutdowns and numerous dead roms. Had to flash a fresh version of the OS (which was a long story in itself, and I'm very glad Google translate exists bc the only help out there was in Russian), and it was okay, but a pretty dodgy way to play everything.

Still, PS1 on a stick is cool for the 7 or 8 bucks I paid as a "new" user.

      • +1

I think Apple TV can do retro gaming as well.

    • +5

I did a Retropie setup. Fun build, and one of the kids recently completed Moon Patrol.

      Basically this:
      https://www.instructables.com/Retropie-Ikea-Arcade-Table/

(EDIT - didnt see the "more compact" note above) ¯_(ツ)_/¯

      • Looks fun!

        • +2

Atari Asteroids and arcade Street Fighter 2 get a fair bit of use.

          Galaga is no 1 though.

  • +2

I remember buying the first Atari Flashback for 30 bucks at the local mall almost 20 years ago. (profanity) loved that thing.

    • I can't understand why the Flashback is still going. Who keeps buying them? Yeah ok, I bought the 50th Anniversary one but who didn't?

      • +1

Lol I couldn't imagine. I won a 30 buck voucher from the local mall's magazine thing, and I bought it from Kmart immediately. I was stoked on getting 40 odd games and new controllers and shit to play with, fun way to experience pre-NES era games for the first time, it was great.

I was also broke and like 10 years old.

There's so many better, cheaper, and more convenient ways to play 2600 these days. Hell I got a 2600 emulator on my (profanity) Nokia 3310 way back when too. Why you'd buy a Flashback these days as anything other than a stocking stuffer is beyond me unfortunately.

        • +1

Be happy you didn't buy an N-Gage. The rage still burns today lol

  • Where do I get the cartridges?

  • +3

I think if you told younger self that you can send the entire Atari library and emulator in a single message on a wireless phone, would of wrote it off as Star Trek nonsense.

  • +10

$9 cheaper than the last time I saw this advertised. (in 1985)

    Bargain!

    • Inflation is finally over!

  • Good deal, I think we paid about $300 for ours in 1981

    • +3

We paid $210 from Toyworld in Oakleigh. Me, my brother and my sister all saved our pocket money, and bought one for Dad for his birthday. :)
I remember it was $210, cause my sister never actually fronted up with the $70, so mum had to chip in.

      Still angry.

  • The Atari XE looks better with it's pastel colored buttons.

Games I remem playing watching; missile command, ball blazer, bug hunt, mario bros, airball

  • Excellent deal, beats Amazonia.

  • Can you add an additional controller to this? If so, where would one source it from?

    • Yes, either EB Games, Atari store or AliExpress.

  • +1

wait a minute so this is the real deal? i can put any atari 2600 cart in this?

    • Apparently yes, the reviewers above also mentioned it.
See ATARI 2600 Games Compatibility List above.

  • Only ten games? They had a version in the early 90a that came with 100+ games.

  • Can it run Crysis?

  • +3

Had to do this, actually have old school 2600 in garage with approx 50 original cartridges. Dislike using due to connectivity, but with HDMI… Family Christmas sorted, well I'm happy. Thanks op.

    • +1

You won't regret it. It's great good dusting off those old cartridges and firing them up again; and then realising how bad the joystick really was.

Just a note that those old cartridges won't likely work straight away. All the contacts will be oxidised. Most of the time, they can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds. Worst case you can use an emery board to clean it.

      • I have found that to be true for ALL of my old nintendo cartridges however havent had any problem with old atari carts for some reason.

  • You can always download Every Atari Game ever made here and just use Stella. Very cheap ;) https://www.atarimania.com/pgerom_collection.awp

I do have a 2600+ sitting here on my desk, got a small collection of about 20 cartridges.

  • +2

I can imagine the kids faces if i get them this instead of a Quest 3S

    • +3

You'll be able to see their faces with this one.

  • Have a bunch of games for this. I’ll add it to my Christmas wish list.

Ah the memories! I was a kid growing up in India in a middle class family in the 90s and so we had Asian made clones of the Nintendo 16 bit and 8 bit consoles. Some richer kids whose parents worked in the middle east had the Ataris. So all of these were very aspirational things for us to get.

Once I was visiting a used electronic market and happened to find the 2600 console with its unique joystick. It was sold as-is without an adapter. I had to pay a good chunk of my savings from my allowance to buy it. Then spent additional money to buy the power adapter. Of course the bloody thing didn't work. So ended up taking it to electronic repair stores all of whom took this poor kid for a ride and never fixed it. I never faced despair like that until that point. Blew all my savings which could have gotten me a brand new console.

A couple of years later my folks got me a legit Indian clone of the nintendo NES. But I never got over that disappointment. :(

    • +1

Not too late for redemption ;-)

  • All the same, I'd rather buy another My Arcade Atari 50 for work.

  • This reminds me I've got an original 7800 with about 80 games boxes up at my parents house.

Time to get break it out.

  • What's an original one go for these days?

    • +1

      $150 for a Atari 2600 junior. $300 for a Vadar. $400 for a light sixer. $600 for a heavy sixer.

  • +1

what's the point of this , can't you just emulate the whole library of games that ever existed for this system on the space of the memory card.
where are you going to get cartridges anyway

    • +1

The point is there are huge numbers of cartridges in the wild, and it’s difficult to play them with modern TV’s on original hardware.

The Atari 2600+ solves this. It also has a reproduction controller, it is difficult to reproduce the experience of an Atari games using modern controls. Some games are completely unplayable on modern emulators (e.g. Breakout and Warlords).

As for games, there are plenty on eBay. Especially the popular ones. Atari also releases brand new games for the Atari 2600 and Atari 7800.

  • deal may have expired

    • Yep. Now there’s a lesser 20% off code BLKFR that takes the price down to $102, still lower than other stores.
