Been cheaper before, will be again, but for 35ish, the R36S is by FAR the best value emulator you can buy (outside of those $1.75 NES on a chip ones) for what it can play. PS1 is flawless, Dreamcast and PSP are pretty gosh darn decent too, and there's a bevy (literally nearly a thousand and counting) PC ports too of games like GTA 3, Vice City, Quake 3, Half Life, Serious Sam, Sonic Mania, and so many more.

For 35 dollars this is genuinely the best gift I could recommend to a GamerTM. N64 is a bit shit (hit and miss, some games are perfectly playable, I beat GoldenEye on it fine but there there was a few missing textures), but other than that, it's incredible what this thing can do for the price.

BatleXP G350 is generally regarded as the new budget king.

      • +1

I've got a dmg coloured one coming.

        • I got my black Pocket DMG from launch and it's sooo good.. the sheer power of it over other similar Gameboys is amazing.

          • +1

@bchliu: Yeah it maybe but i was actually referring to the BatleXP G350 handheld. I bought the grey dmg coloured one.

      • +2

I mean R36S was recently at $30 and I havent seen the G350 under $65

    • How it compare to the $50 Miyoo Mini? This one comes with 2 joystick balls while that one comes with preinstalled games for some $$ more for almost 2x the price of this.

      Edit: Found the answer below.

      • +2

        That answer is bollocks.

The Miyoo plays up to PS1, and weirdly DS, but that's it.

R36S, can do all of those as well as Dreamcast, PSP, N64, hundreds and hundreds of PC ports, Java games, and more.

MM has WiFi and is a little smaller. That's about the only things it does better. R36S can do internet via a cord or dongle but not wirelessly. R36S is cheaper, has joysticks, more emulators, more OS options if that's your thing, and is honestly all round better in all areas bar the awkwardly loud clicky triggers

      • +2

I have both. I always pick up the MM+ vs R36S, and I love my orange one.

The buttons are so much better and it feels premium when you hold it. You also have WiFi and the benefits of that without having to always use a dongle.

But yeah, you're looking at almost x2 the price. R36S side by side does have a better screen.

        Both can play JAVA games.

But when it comes to playing the games, I always go back to MM+. For the price though, get both like I did.

If you're getting 1, and price isn't the issue, if you're not enjoying playing it, what's the point? Buttons are key. And I own 16 devices, I also gravitate towards those that have good buttons.

Mandatory comment: do not get bigger sdcard doesnt matter how cheap it is

  • +1

I love mine, and highly recommend it if you don't need Wifi, Bluetooth or HDMI out. For a fun little nostalgia unit with a surprisingly good screen, you can't go wrong.

Be careful of the sellers in Aliexpress for the R36S. There are many "fake" models which are almost identical except the mainboard uses a totally different and lower class of CPU and less RAM leading to less performance and less games you can run (not compatible with ARKOS). Subs in Reddit almost entirely people trying to identify if their R36S is indeed real or fake..

  • Just get the Miyoo Mini Plus for $50. The R36S has the worse shoulder buttons and cheapest plastic body.

Or if you want a HD screen get the Trimui Brick for $80

Or if you want horizontal body get the Trimui Smart Pro $80

    • Miyoo is great if you don't want PSP, Dreamcast, Java games, Nintendo 64, dual joysticks, any of the hundreds of PC ports, or any of the other things R36S has that it doesn't.

Should buttons are loud but comfortable on the R36S, my Miyoo they're genuinely annoying though because it's so easy to accidentally hit r2 just where your fingers kind of naturally rest which has thrown off many Tony Hawk combos for me.

      • JAVA works on Miyoo, I've been playing Plants Vs Zombies on mine. J2ME(reddit.com)

        • Yep, JAVA works well, also playing PvZ.

        • Well I'll be (profanity), guess I got myself another Guitar Hero Mobile machine.

Actually you need to fork out at least another $10 because the included SDcard is crap.

For anyone who might think this is a bargain. Let me warn you. It isn’t.

Before long you will have an R36S. TrimUI Brick. Retroid Pocket 5. Be wondering if it still makes sense to get a Steam Deck. Be buying a Miyoo Mini for your disinterested kid.

This is a gateway device. It’s not benign. It’ll get you.

    • +1

Somehow I've managed to keep away from the Steam Deck after getting an extensive retro console collection. Only recently I found my old Ouya and Gamestick in a box somewhere. Good memories despite them being a flop.

    • +2

I bought a steam deck but rarely ever used it. Eventually sold it

    • Buy a gaming controller(8bitdo.com) for your mobile phone and install an emulator, then enjoy.

  • +2

I bought this. Great selection of games, stirs nostalgia! My only complaint is the ergonomics of the buttons. My fingers/hands hurt from using the small buttons, which are not optimal for lengthy use gaming.

    • +2

Absolutely! Horizontal handhelds are definitely the better choice for anyone without tiny hands. There’s even a version of this handheld called the R36H that comes in a horizontal layout, though it costs about $15 more.
