An older Retro Handheld Console, but still decent especially with OnionOS custom firmware.

Another alternative with the same form-factor would be the TrimUI Brick, but it's currently a lot more expensive.

Specs:

  • 3.5" IPS 640x480 display
  • ARM Cortex-A7 Dual-core CPU
  • 3000mAh removable battery
  • Vibrating Motor
  • Wi-Fi Network Connection - Update OTA and Retroarch Achievements
  • Supported format: PS1, CPS, FBA, GBA, GBA, GB, SFC, FC, MD, SMS, GG, NEOGEO, PCE, WSC (and some DS and Pico-8 Games).

I highly recommend installing OnionOS game launcher and replacing the the MicroSD Card with a reputable brand such as SanDisk or Samsung.

I picked one up mid last year when they were being cleared out due to poor reviews.

It has come along way since with the release of SpruceOS.

I find the screen abit too small, so it's not in my current rotation.

      • +1

        thanks for the reply :)

edit: if you do feel like it could you please tell me your current rotation!

        • +2

My current rotation is the Miyoo Mini Plus, TrimUI Smart Pro and Odin 2 Pro.

Received the TrimUI Brick last week but haven't had time to properly set it up yet. Depending on how it does, may replace the Miyoo Mini Plus.

@RichardL: I really wanted to love the Trimui Brick that I got but it just seems to run way too hot no matter how low end emulation you wanna play it for. Don't get me wrong its a fantastic device in every single way and I even got a grip and a silicon case for it but even without using either it just runs way way too hot.

For context I've even tried playing very basic og gameboy etc with no filters or anything applied and yet after like 10 to 20 mins it just gets super hot.

For this reason I'll be selling mine along with most of my other handhelds. I've got way too many at this point.

            It's a real shame tho.

            • +1

@habib23q: I did read about the overheating problems, but didn't think it would be that bad.

I'll have to test mine before deciding what to do with it.

              • +4

@RichardL: Yeah as someone who has around 25 devices at this point and is about 4 years plus into it at this point i can tell you that it seems to heat up alot more then it should.

But then again i did see a tear down of it and it seems like because of its super compact and flat design with no real cooling that maybe contributing to it heating up too fast. Looks like something that could've been fixed with a simple raspberry pi type of thermal pad kit on the main Allwinner chip and or with thermal paste but of course they wouldnt do such a thing for a sub $100 device.

That's why its a shame. It has a gorgeous resolution screen which looks super crisp with shaders applied but that just makes it heat up super fast. By the way you use shaders even on this old Miyoo Mini or Rg35xx and they do get warm to a point but no where near as bad and or as fast as the Brick does.

          • @RichardL:

            TrimUI Smart Pro

I find this to be the best of the bunch by way of its horizontal layout, which is just much more ergonomic and space efficient than the vertical layout.

Aside from potential nostalgia with the original GB / GBC, I personally would always prefer the horizontal layout.

Where do you get the Games?

  • I wish I got this instead of Analogue Pocket, except if I did I'd still wish I had the Pocket. I guess it was an itch I just had to scratch.

    • This is like a tenth of the price of Analogue Pocket.

The Analogue Pocket has been on my wishlist, but can't justify dropping ~A$500 on one haha.

      • I justified it as recreating my childhood, the nostalgia hit. But the screen is great, the integer scaling is off the charts for GB/C, but it's not the same. The GB and GBC had a sort of floating pixel effect on a reflective screen, which this just doesn't recreate at all. It's still nice to have though and nice to know I can play SNES games with great accuracy. Plus GBA and a bunch of other old consoles.

        • Main reason I wanted one is to play all my physical GB/GBC/GBA Cartridge, but can't justify the cost.

        • +1

I've tried the Analogue Pocket (ended up selling it). I personally didn't like it - I didn't feel that it genuinely replicated the GB experience very well.

Yes, it does better with input lag (which these cheap software emulated ones really struggle with), but it still feels like emulation. The best way to play old GB / GBC / GBA games is with a GBA SP, it's the perfect size for it and has a lot of the more modern comforts (e.g. backlight) that makes it quite usable.

The other thing about the Analogue Pocket is that it feels a bit like a showpiece to me, doesn't seem durable enough to be able to throw in a backpack and not care about it. The old Gameboys could get banged up, but they developed a nice patina from being heavily used that never looked trashy.

          • @p1 ama: I think GBC and GBA SP are probably the best combo. I'd keep the reflective screen on the GBC and do the screen mod on the GBA SP. It would mean I need to buy flash carts though, after all that it probably costs as much as the Analogue Pocket. If I could sell my Pocket and dock for a good price I'd consider it.

  • Not comfortable if PS1 emulation is what you're after.

    • It can play PS1, but I wouldn't recommend the Miyoo Mini for it.

Reaching shoulder buttons is painful…for me.

    • I have no problem reaching them, the problem I have is L2/R2 are very easy to accidentally hit. I've swapped to nollie in THPS3 more on this console than I have the rest of my entire life playing these games due to accidentally clicking L2.

Other than that though, very comfortable tbh

  • I've had my one of this for like 2 years by this point but at this price it's an instabuy. With OnionOS it runs like a charm. Unfortunately it is too small for me to play for long periods but I gotta grip for it which makes it so much better. I've used both a 256gb and 512gb cards with it and it always works like a champ. Also super reliable. Along with the R36s, your fully set for good budget retro gaming fun.

    • R36S is cheaper, slightly more powerful and has joysticks

Personally I still prefer Miyoo Mini with OnionOS, as I don't play games which requires joystick on the small device.

    • I have both, and a million others. Both have pros and cons, Miyoo is slightly smaller with built in WiFi, R36S has dual sticks and more power, etc. I'd recommend the R36S though just due to the much larger library of games you can play if nothing else. Miyoo taps out at PS1 and GBA (NDS not withstanding), R36S can do PSP (decently well), Dreamcast, and a shitload of cool PC ports like GTA3/VC, Quake 3, and more recent stuff like Sonic Mania, Mercenary Kings, and so on.

  • Miyoo mini+ my goto handheld travelling.
I got a RG CUBE (not the CUBEXX) for $99USD delivered ($150aud) with a stacked 25% Topcashback yesterday (so about $120AUD delivered all up) but I couldnt reproduce the link. it was a coin offer with 25% off using coins.

    • Been meaning to pick up a 1:1 screen device, but I don't think I'll use it regularly to justify purchasing one.

      • yeh me neither lol the 1:1 screens probably dont need anything that powerful like RG Cube. but it was so cheap….

        • Main/only platform I would play on a 1:1 device would be the Game Boy, but I can live with playing it on a 4:3 screen…

          • @RichardL: hmm im gona test out 8:7 snes and some vertical arcades

    • how do you get coin offer and how do you collect them?

      • +1

Coins you accumulate by buying stuff and daily checking.

Trimui Brick is the new kid on the block.

  • How do you apply the coupon?

    • Should be at checkout under 'Promo Code'.

  • is there any way to play the original donkey kong game and watch on this?

    • Looks like it's possible according to Reddit.

  • Will this play pirated n64 roms?

    • n64 doesnt work on this

  • Curious how this one different from R36s? More games and more compatibility?

  • Best device for mega drive emulation 🤔

Just not sure if worth moving on from my PS Vita for emulation.

  • +1

Love this device but also sucks for hands, probably worst ergonomics I've ever used because how short it is. Mind you my hands are not considered big either

  • Anyone can compare R36s and RG40xxv (anbernic). I have no idea of retro consoles but leaning towards these.

Also, is it better to get the base 64gb version and upgrade to reputable sd card brand with more memory like 128GB, and download games from net … ot should i buy 128gb and copy all games to 128gb card to avoid hassle?

Why would you want to play such old, clunky games?

    • For nostalgias sake

    • Yeh why would people play old retro games when the new AAA are soooo good…,🙄

    • The same reason people watch old movies or read books from 100 years ago

    • There are many older games that i would say don't really age, and are still genuinely enjoyable today. Especially games from the 8bit graphics era. You don't need the latest and greatest to have fun

  • What’s the best handheld I can buy for about $100???
