An older Retro Handheld Console, but still decent especially with OnionOS custom firmware.

Another alternative with the same form-factor would be the TrimUI Brick, but it's currently a lot more expensive.

Specs:

  • 3.5" IPS 640x480 display
  • ARM Cortex-A7 Dual-core CPU
  • 3000mAh removable battery
  • Vibrating Motor
  • Wi-Fi Network Connection - Update OTA and Retroarch Achievements
  • Supported format: PS1, CPS, FBA, GBA, GBA, GB, SFC, FC, MD, SMS, GG, NEOGEO, PCE, WSC (and some DS and Pico-8 Games).

I highly recommend installing OnionOS game launcher and replacing the the MicroSD Card with a reputable brand such as SanDisk or Samsung.

  • nice deal! do you think an a30 is worth getting?

    • +4

I picked one up mid last year when they were being cleared out due to poor reviews.

It has come along way since with the release of SpruceOS.

I find the screen abit too small, so it's not in my current rotation.

      • +2

        thanks for the reply :)

edit: if you do feel like it could you please tell me your current rotation!

        • +2

My current rotation is the Miyoo Mini Plus, TrimUI Smart Pro and Odin 2 Pro.

Received the TrimUI Brick last week but haven't had time to properly set it up yet. Depending on how it does, may replace the Miyoo Mini Plus.

          • +5

@RichardL: I really wanted to love the Trimui Brick that I got but it just seems to run way too hot no matter how low end emulation you wanna play it for. Don't get me wrong its a fantastic device in every single way and I even got a grip and a silicon case for it but even without using either it just runs way way too hot.

For context I've even tried playing very basic og gameboy etc with no filters or anything applied and yet after like 10 to 20 mins it just gets super hot.

For this reason I'll be selling mine along with most of my other handhelds. I've got way too many at this point.

            It's a real shame tho.

            • +2

@habib23q: I did read about the overheating problems, but didn't think it would be that bad.

I'll have to test mine before deciding what to do with it.

              • +5

@RichardL: Yeah as someone who has around 25 devices at this point and is about 4 years plus into it at this point i can tell you that it seems to heat up alot more then it should.

But then again i did see a tear down of it and it seems like because of its super compact and flat design with no real cooling that maybe contributing to it heating up too fast. Looks like something that could've been fixed with a simple raspberry pi type of thermal pad kit on the main Allwinner chip and or with thermal paste but of course they wouldnt do such a thing for a sub $100 device.

That's why its a shame. It has a gorgeous resolution screen which looks super crisp with shaders applied but that just makes it heat up super fast. By the way you use shaders even on this old Miyoo Mini or Rg35xx and they do get warm to a point but no where near as bad and or as fast as the Brick does.

            • @habib23q: I have had the brick for a month never had any overheating problem. What OS are you running?

              • @t0087669: Well first of all used the Stock one, then Crossmix as well as Stockmix. It heats up just as quickly using any of them. But I did buy it as soon as it was released tho, so maybe i got a dud one. I also bad problems with my Rg35xx-sp and Trimui Smart pro again i got both on release and there newer revisions which are indeed better.

My rgb30 also was running hot as well. I have since gotten the rg cubexx and the rg40xxh and both are indeed very good.

Also have the rg40xxv and rg556 which are good but i find the v does also heat up as well and is poorly made.

The original rg351v and rg35xx still work fine. I also have multiple R35s and R36s and one of them had a screen pop out but that was 1 out of 5 of them.

As for the powkiddys i have multiple v10s and x55 which all work fine.

As for my Retroid Pocket 2s and 3 both are fine as well.

I do also have a sf2000 which is so good for the cheap price i got it for as well as a M17 which was total rubbish.

            • @habib23q: Just as a counterpoint. I have Trimui brick in black running MinUi. I mainly use it for GBA and GBC and I have never had any issues with overheating. Not sure why thats the case, but I am glad it is the case.

Oh and I love the brick.

              • @mooney: I love everything about it too. But like i said the overheating issue in my case atleast isn't minor. I've had like over 50 handhelds at this point and this one is by far the worst. It maybe i got a dud unit, it happens but I know im not the only one who has experienced this. Just had to be mentioned.

                • @habib23q: Yeah, I seen enough people report this issue to know its real, but just wanted to share that its not everyone. Also FIFTY handhelds… LOL. That crazy.

I am running two. TrumUi Brick and Retroid Pocket 5. Thats enough for me.

                  • @mooney: Yeah well it's a real shame as its really well built and everything but i think with a simple thermal pad and some additional ventilation slots it could've been better.

Yeah i started off like that. But you sorta get lost sometimes and before you know it end up with a roomful of them lol

                    • @habib23q: I do believe you. I have two kids who have little interest in retro gaming, but my brain has already had me looking at what is a good fit for them (its what led me to this page in the first place)

                      • @mooney: Hahahaha im the same two with two kids. One of them loves the retro stuff tho but the older one is only into Roblox. I've been gaming for well over 44 years at this point. I still have my original Tandy pong system and Intellivision and Atari. But i was heavily into the C64 and Amiga scene back in the day. Also dabbled with the ST and both megadrive and snes later on before moving onto the pcs, ps1 and every console since. I started using emulators back in the mid 90s, such as C64s, Nesticle, Neoragex, UAE and Fellow amonst the og Raine and MAME stuff. So I've been around this stuff for way too long by this point.

By the way to clarify on my earlier point I don't have 50 handhelds at this stage. More like 20 or so but as I have mentioned alot previously I am in the process of selling nearly all of them off. I basically set them up, get 3d printed grips and silicon case and hard cases for them and they just get put away.

Also I have given away quite a few as gifts to cousins and friends too.

                        • @habib23q: lol. Similar story except my first obsession was my spectrum 48k. I tapped out at n64 and only picked up gaming again this year when I actively decided to limit my doomscrolling when trump started trying to destroy the modern world.

Guess I’ll probably see you on reddit. :)

                          • +1

                            @mooney: Good to hear.

Hahaha of course you will :)

          • @RichardL:

            TrimUI Smart Pro

I find this to be the best of the bunch by way of its horizontal layout, which is just much more ergonomic and space efficient than the vertical layout.

Aside from potential nostalgia with the original GB / GBC, I personally would always prefer the horizontal layout.

      Dark web

    • Such games, much interwebs.

    • +2

If you have any moral qualms about piracy (which is fine, no judgement), you could always rip cartridges that you own with relatively cheap tools these days.

    • +1

Google "Tiny Best Set Go" or "Done Set 3" - both are hosted on archive.org

    • +1

There's an option to add a sd card with preinstalled games for a few bucks more. I reckon a good start and save time.

  • I wish I got this instead of Analogue Pocket, except if I did I'd still wish I had the Pocket. I guess it was an itch I just had to scratch.

    • This is like a tenth of the price of Analogue Pocket.

The Analogue Pocket has been on my wishlist, but can't justify dropping ~A$500 on one haha.

      • I justified it as recreating my childhood, the nostalgia hit. But the screen is great, the integer scaling is off the charts for GB/C, but it's not the same. The GB and GBC had a sort of floating pixel effect on a reflective screen, which this just doesn't recreate at all. It's still nice to have though and nice to know I can play SNES games with great accuracy. Plus GBA and a bunch of other old consoles.

        • Main reason I wanted one is to play all my physical GB/GBC/GBA Cartridge, but can't justify the cost.

        • +1

I've tried the Analogue Pocket (ended up selling it). I personally didn't like it - I didn't feel that it genuinely replicated the GB experience very well.

Yes, it does better with input lag (which these cheap software emulated ones really struggle with), but it still feels like emulation. The best way to play old GB / GBC / GBA games is with a GBA SP, it's the perfect size for it and has a lot of the more modern comforts (e.g. backlight) that makes it quite usable.

The other thing about the Analogue Pocket is that it feels a bit like a showpiece to me, doesn't seem durable enough to be able to throw in a backpack and not care about it. The old Gameboys could get banged up, but they developed a nice patina from being heavily used that never looked trashy.

          • @p1 ama: I think GBC and GBA SP are probably the best combo. I'd keep the reflective screen on the GBC and do the screen mod on the GBA SP. It would mean I need to buy flash carts though, after all that it probably costs as much as the Analogue Pocket. If I could sell my Pocket and dock for a good price I'd consider it.

    • Brick is a mini version of the pocket (design-wise) if that is of interest.

      • +1

Yeah I saw that, they even cloned the appearance of PocketOS for it.

        • Yeah MinUI is very inspired by PocketOS (Although it was made for many other handhelds before the brick).

Fun fact, it's made by the same guy who is part of the software team for the Playdate handheld, Shaun Inman.

  • Not comfortable if PS1 emulation is what you're after.

    • It can play PS1, but I wouldn't recommend the Miyoo Mini for it.

      • +2

Reaching shoulder buttons is painful…for me.

    • I have no problem reaching them, the problem I have is L2/R2 are very easy to accidentally hit. I've swapped to nollie in THPS3 more on this console than I have the rest of my entire life playing these games due to accidentally clicking L2.

Other than that though, very comfortable tbh

  • I've had my one of this for like 2 years by this point but at this price it's an instabuy. With OnionOS it runs like a charm. Unfortunately it is too small for me to play for long periods but I gotta grip for it which makes it so much better. I've used both a 256gb and 512gb cards with it and it always works like a champ. Also super reliable. Along with the R36s, your fully set for good budget retro gaming fun.

    • Is there much point to this in addition to the R36S? Or just one or the other?

      • +1

Well i got my miyoo like 2 years ago or so. I have bought multiple R36s for super cheap over the years and it all depends on whether or not you value having sticks for certain systems. But as for build quality the mini is better then the R36 is.

    • R36S is cheaper, slightly more powerful and has joysticks

Personally I still prefer Miyoo Mini with OnionOS, as I don't play games which requires joystick on the small device.

    • I have both, and a million others. Both have pros and cons, Miyoo is slightly smaller with built in WiFi, R36S has dual sticks and more power, etc. I'd recommend the R36S though just due to the much larger library of games you can play if nothing else. Miyoo taps out at PS1 and GBA (NDS not withstanding), R36S can do PSP (decently well), Dreamcast, and a shitload of cool PC ports like GTA3/VC, Quake 3, and more recent stuff like Sonic Mania, Mercenary Kings, and so on.

  • Miyoo mini+ my goto handheld travelling.
I got a RG CUBE (not the CUBEXX) for $99USD delivered ($150aud) with a stacked 25% Topcashback yesterday (so about $120AUD delivered all up) but I couldnt reproduce the link. it was a coin offer with 25% off using coins.

    • Been meaning to pick up a 1:1 screen device, but I don't think I'll use it regularly to justify purchasing one.

      • yeh me neither lol the 1:1 screens probably dont need anything that powerful like RG Cube. but it was so cheap….

        • Main/only platform I would play on a 1:1 device would be the Game Boy, but I can live with playing it on a 4:3 screen…

    • how do you get coin offer and how do you collect them?

      • +1

Coins you accumulate by buying stuff and daily checking.

On the coins page in the app they have discounts

Trimui Brick is the new kid on the block.

    • Anyone got a good link for the TrimUI brick? Decent store on AliExpress would be appreciated, I haven't used that website in years and I'm out of touch

  • How do you apply the coupon?

    • Should be at checkout under 'Promo Code'.

  • is there any way to play the original donkey kong game and watch on this?

    • Looks like it's possible according to Reddit.

  • Will this play pirated n64 roms?

    • n64 doesnt work on this

  • Curious how this one different from R36s? More games and more compatibility?

    • +1

Smaller (no sticks), little bit more premium feel, dpad might be a bit better (I've heard it's one of the best on the market).

  • Best device for mega drive emulation 🤔

Just not sure if worth moving on from my PS Vita for emulation.

  • +1

Love this device but also sucks for hands, probably worst ergonomics I've ever used because how short it is. Mind you my hands are not considered big either

  • Anyone can compare R36s and RG40xxv (anbernic). I have no idea of retro consoles but leaning towards these.

Also, is it better to get the base 64gb version and upgrade to reputable sd card brand with more memory like 128GB, and download games from net … ot should i buy 128gb and copy all games to 128gb card to avoid hassle?

    • +1

      For nostalgias sake

    • Yeh why would people play old retro games when the new AAA are soooo good…,🙄

    • +3

The same reason people watch old movies or read books from 100 years ago

    • There are many older games that i would say don't really age, and are still genuinely enjoyable today. Especially games from the 8bit graphics era. You don't need the latest and greatest to have fun

    • +1

It's great for travel and how small and pocketable this device is.
Some of my regular go to games on this are:
Super Nintendo - Super Mario World and Zelda
      PS1 - Tekken 3 and Gran Turismo 2
Game Boy Advance - Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2
      Range of Pokemon games
Battery holds up great in standby mode.

      • -1

When I had a bit of time on my way to somewhere, I always used to read a book. I guess this generation is different.

        • So first the games are old and clunky, and now it's "this generation is different"
People that played some of the above mentioned games as kids are in their 40s
What generation are you referring to?

          • -1

@pwnd: I don't know anyone in their 40s who likes to sit on a bus looking at a low-resolution 3.5 inch screen playing console games from 1991.

            • +1

@ForkSnorter: I'm older than that and happily play Tetris, 1942, ghosts and ghouls and lots of other games.
I don't have 40 hours to sit down and play gta5 or balders gate, but 15mins of Tetris is fun.

            • +2

              @ForkSnorter:

Why are you being such a d1ck? There are plenty of things on OzB which may or may not be of interest to any particular person. Imagine if everyone just comes along and comments "I don't know anyone who would be interested in XYZ" on every deal that isn't their cup of tea.

Even if not for nostalgia's sake, there are plenty of games from previous generations which are still masterpieces today, and would be worth playing for their own sake.

I got my primary school-aged kid one of these devices, and he's really enjoyed playing some classic games, including recently finishing Super Mario Bros. 3 (which I never even got around to doing back in the day), and now working through Super Mario World (which is a damn hard game) and Zelda Ocarina of Time (which is still so much fun today).

          Was it uphill both ways?

  • What’s the best handheld I can buy for about $100???

    • +1

      Trimui brick

      • Thank you

      • Got any deals to link? I would love to get one soon

  • Really loving my Brick. It's a champ with NextUI (a fork of MinUI), SpruceOS is in Alpha, and even Android in the near future.

I'd say it's worth the extra for the screen alone. It's got great pixel density and brightness.

  • I ordered a Miyoo Mini from Ampown store, and they didn't include my memory card. Sent a note back to the seller, and they said even though it was their mistake I had to pay extra if I wanted it shipped.

YMMV, but I would stay away from this seller - they're dishonest.

    • From the storefront and when I ordered last night, I'm pretty sure the base model doesn't come with memory card unless you chose to pick the one with the memory card. If you ordered the one with memory card but didn't get it, scummy practicr from them though. I personally bought one with none because I'm going to replace it anyways.

      • Nah, I ordered one with a card, but they didn't include it and told me I had to pay additional shipping to have it sent out.

    • Base Option (No Games), doesn't come with a MicroSD Card.

Personally, I wouldn't trust the memory card that comes with it as they are known to fail/corrupt.

I recommend replacing/purchasing a new MicroSD Card from a reputable brand such as SanDisk or Samsung.

      • I ordered one with a card, but they must have shipped the wrong one and then told me I had to pay additional shipping to have the card sent out.

    • +1

mine came with a card and I never used it. Bought a 64GB Sandisk, installed onion OS (check retro game corps for a guide), loaded games (tiny best set go)

      • Yeah, did the same. Bought a card elsewhere, installed onionOS and done-set-two. Honestly, such a great handheld - just this store I think should be stayed away from.

  • Was $90 2 years ago. People talk about inflation and tariffs and dollar value.
