My last cabin bag got damaged, so time for a new one. Decided to get something tough like a Pelican.

Normally retails for around $750. Not ATL, but decently priced if this is your thing.

Weighs 4.5kg. Why would you use this for a carry-on?

I have the Tactix from Bunnings for under $100.

Equals more money for camera gear.

Yeah I'm with you. Makes no sense to use this. Even a cheap carry on makes more sense than this, and cabin damage is quite rare. I can replace at least ten new carry on for the price of this.

      • Expensive professional equipment, Qantas weight doesn't usually matter for business class

        • Those professional equipment usually comes with its own personalised cases which doesn't require yet another case on top of it which is an overkill. Those are already heavy enough that you can't pay me to buy yet another heavy case on top for it which again makes no sense.

        • You may want to rethink this strategy, I have been weight and size checked on a PER-SYD in business before. Although that was only once out of many it can happen.

I bought one when prices were reasonable (pre pandemic - just checked AU$235!) and returned it. It's way too heavy for carry on and way too small for check in. And there's hardly any room inside for all this heft. Suggest there are better options for carry on if you need it for sensitive equipment (eg think tank). Just my 2c…

    • Dang! $235 is a bargain! Wish I could wind back time and get it at those prices.

I agree that it is rather heavy, but I was looking at Rimowa, and those are not any lighter.

  • Yeah they don't give a stuff about our baggage. Bought a new suitcase and on first trip to Philippines when i collected it at Cebu a wheel was hanging off. So i repaired it and it got home ok. 4 months later next trip to Cebu i picked it up and there was slice in it about 50cm long and 1cm wide and it was flapping away in the air.

    • Cebu sounds a bit like Medan. Check in staff attach fragile stickers in order to alert which bags to drop.

      • To be fair, it is rumoured that if you use a Rimowa, baggage handlers will try their best to test the bags to the limit. I am guessing a Pelican will give off similar vibes.

        • As someone who flies a lot, I use cheap, sturdy suitcases with loud colours as there's no point going fancy. Given the baggage handling process, I'd rather they run sandpaper all over a Kia than a Ferrari just as an analogy.
