nbn 100/40 $70/Month for 1st 6 Months, 250/25 $77/Month, 1000/50 $91/Month @ Neptune

945

I’ve never heard of Neptune before and found them through an ad on Instagram.

  • 50/20 $63/Month, doesn’t seem like an especially good price.
  • 100/40 $70/Month first 6 months
  • 250/20 $77/Month
  • 1000/50 $91/Month

Neptune seems to be a new provider who claims to focus on privacy and security.

Free inclusions:

  • Free static IPV4 address
  • Claims to include 2 “quantum resistant” VPN tunnels
  • DNS sinkhole that blocks ads, trackers and speeds up loading

Primary POP is in Melbourne.
Their FAQs are pretty transparent about utilisation and latency rates for different states and internationally.

I’m currently on AGL 100/20 for $69 which was the cheapest I could find so the extra 20 upload for $1 more seems like a great deal.

WHOIS of the domain name shows the owner is Recloud Pty Ltd.

  • Any gamer have any feedback about this one for gaming ?

    • +28

Avoid if outside of Vic, as they only have a POP in Melbourne.

    • any ISP for gaming in Sydney?

      • Leaptel, ABB

      • Superloop

      • superloop with COD AU server is like 1-2 ping. SEA server is around 90 ping
cool with CS and other games too.

  • +7

Says all plans include a 5 day free trial.

    • +2

      That didn’t last long lol.

  • +8

Prices for all four tiers are for the first 6 months only.

  • +1

    This is GSL network upstream

    • +1

      The best

    • Isn't that what Nord uses?

  • +5

    they also have 250/100 for $91, 1000/50 for $91, 500/200 for $112, 1000/400 $139 for six months.

how do we get access to these other plans? can;t seem to find it on the site when trying to sign up. wanting to go with the 500/200 for $112

      • +1

Put in your address and toggle on “ FTTP High Upload Speed Plans”

    • Thanks for the information, can I ask where did you get that screenshot from, or how can I find same information for other ISP?

      Thanks

    $100/month for 100/40 after 6 months???

What is the use of a VPN that has your ISP as the end point?

The Atmosphere DNS feature is just a way less configurable NextDNS or Adguard DNS (or piHole for that matter), I feel like anyone who knows enough to use a DNS sinkhole is going to want something more configurable anyway…

    • Goes from me saying, that's a decent price to wtf?? in a split second.

    • +16

Aren’t they all the same? Switch after 6 months!

    • You don’t have to use it if you just want the cheaper prices.

  • +3

include 2 “quantum resistant” VPN tunnels

What does that even mean ?

    • +5

Means your data can't be cracked by off the shelf quantum computers, only the ones that <REDACTED> use

      • +1

Means they use elliptic curve instead of RSA.

        • +1

          Republic of South Africa disagrees

        • +1

Yep, just marketing garbage. EC has been available for most vpns for a long time and if anyone has the millions to target your vpn with a quantum computer you are already screwed.

        • Does this mean my cat videos will be safe?

      • He means big googley eyes :O

    • +2

In a quantum-resistant VPN, a post-quantum KEM is used to establish a shared secret between the client and the server over an insecure channel. This shared secret can then be used as a pre-shared key or as input to derive symmetric keys for encrypting and decrypting the actual data transmitted over the VPN tunnel.

Means it simultaneously works and doesn't work

        Schrödinger's VPN

      • +2

It works but only if you never look at it

      • Your data is probably arriving, therefore it is.

    • No AntMan/Wasp. Possibly InnerSpace

  • +1

Just signed up to them, was pretty seamless only took 2 mins to be disconnected and just had to change my router internet type to Dynamic IP and away we went. Doesn't look like they have any actual help desk numbers so imagine they won't be great if needing tech support

  • +1

Thanks OP. Signed up for 250/100 ($91)

Hope high upload speeds are more common next year after 6m promo ends. Running Plex, Immich and Moonlight (self-hosted GeForce Now)

  • Found them on Instagram too. Their plan page mentions nothing of promo pricing or what the price will revert to after promo, the FAQ states a free static IP address, yet the CIS states this is $5pm. Better ISPs out there for the post promo pricing.

    • +3

Just join then churn after 6 months

      • I'm at the point where I want a good, reliable connection instead of chasing discounts. Good luck to people joining them, though.

      • If they are still around in 6 months?

    • +3

It does tell you what it goes to after promo ends just select the plan and it shows you eg

      1000/50 $91/Month Then after 6 months $130

      • Yeah just noticed that, so intuitive!

    • These deals are to attract, not keep.

  • +1

IPoE too, very naise… (Borat) 👍

  • I would like to know more about the VPN. Where is it connected to and can you port fwd for torrents?

  • +2

    1000/50 $91/Month @ Neptune

    Far out

    • +3

Good for 6 months after that $130

  • After my little research, the cheapest NBN 50/20 is Kogan for 59/month

    • +1

Kogan support is the worst out of all NBN providers though I've found.

      • +2

        Agree
        Run whenever you hear kogan

  • Will switch once my 6 month promo finishes with ABB.

  • +1

I just chatted to them. Seem to have helpful support. This service offering is like Launtel without daily plans but monthly hence cheaper. Same Launtel like features such as speed change provisioning on the day. Free pause. They have a referral link on their user portal so if I sign up does anyone want to send me theirs for a free month each? I assume this is OK to ask on OB?

  • If you qualify through Commbank Yello, the More Telecom 100/20 (actually 100/17) might be the cheapest 100Mbps plan at $62.40 for 12 months.

    • Reads as $96 for me.

      • Commbank customers get 30-40% off (if you meet certain criteria). There's an offer in the Commbank app if you qualify: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/855701

Edit: 100Mbps for as low as $57.60 if you have a home loan with them and $62.40 for transaction accounts.

  • 1000/50 for $91 looks good, seems to be the normal price. Bit worried about their Melbourne only POP, I'm in Sydney. Will I notice a downgrade in normal browsing, Zoom, download speeds, 4K streaming? No gaming. Compared to a provider who has a Sydney POP?

    • +2

Hey, we actually publish latency and utilisation graphs on the site: https://www.neptune.net.au/faq

While we do only have a Melbourne POP at the moment, we are moving into Sydney in the new year. Until then you'll attract latency overheads of about 10ms in Sydney. Not noticeable for Zoom, voice chat, downloads, and streaming.

      • Good to know. Is this offer running constantly? I'm on contract till Feb and will look to change in early Feb.

        • You can assume we'll have some kind of introductory offer for the foreseeable future, as we're a start up looking to build our customer base.

          • @mesge: Oh no what happened? I'm ready to sign up now and 1000/50 has gone up, from $91 to $104

      • +1

        What about Brisbane?

        • +2

No concrete plans for Brisbane yet, but given SEQs population rest assured it's on the cards.

          • +1

            @mesge: I'll join once you're in brisbane

      • So in Adelaide, am I likely to seen any issues in streaming a 4k video file?

Also, if using a Telstra modem currently with boosters, can I use these with your service and do you provide support to do so?

        • In Adelaide you'll attract a small latency overhead (marginally less than Sydney), but this doesn't typically affect streaming quality of a video file. If latency was high (+150ms) you may have issues with live video streams, however.

      • lol no latency numbers for Perth?? Sigh… we always miss out.

  • I'm currently on 1000/50 HFC with Telstra. Interested in the 1000/400 with Neptune.

Can I get 1000/400 with HFC, or will need to upgrade to FTTP? Do I qualify for a FTTP upgrade?

    • +3

Hey there, to get the 1000/400 you'd need to qualify for an FTTP upgrade, however HFC is not part of the FTTP free upgrade program.

    • +1

HFC tops out at 1000/50 for now. HFC is getting 1000/100 and 2000/100 next year.

To swap from HFC to FTTP you need to spend like $15k to $50k. HFC to FTTP quote link.

  • These guys look good

  • Do they do opticomm as well?

    • No Opticomm at this time. Just NBN.

  • -3

Hmm prices are tempting.. No talk about them on Whingepool

    • +1

A lot of these smaller ISP's don't get mentioned. I think its a good thing in a way as a lot of the people who talk on that site tend to be welded to their own ISP and troll others. I recall Fubar starting a thread only to be attacked by a troll. Ozbargain seem way more willing to give smaller ISP a chance provided the price is a bargain and they get most things right… given these are just small businesses.

  • Wonder who you use for POI backhaul. I know a lot of smaller ISP use Virtutel which would be great for me as I know they just upgrade capacity at my POI. Field Services Group (FSG), Superloop, Vocus all pretty good as well. Thanks..

    • +1

DGtek is their provider, they only have their gear in Melbourne so MegaIX Melbourne.

      other companies using them

AS59204 VoIP Line Telecom Pty. Ltd.
AS134217 Australian IT Support Pty Ltd
AS138572 Four G Telecom Pty Ltd

  • best 1000/50 for sydney? i dont want aussie broadband offshoot 99 a month coz they use CGNAT that you cant turn off, i had leaptel but 12 month $99 offer finished, now this month ill pay 109, with CGNAT tuned on i had many issues with some websites banning me, or showing message unusual traffic coming from your ip address. with leaptel yo ucan turn it off but you cant with the ABB new off shoot brand. only superloop is left but their offer is 99 for first 6 months, does anyone know of any of these new lesser known brands that offer 99 a month with being able to turn off CGNAT

  • What does the VPN function actually do? The faq has no details.

  • 50/20 $63/Month, doesn’t seem like an especially good price.

Who is good for 50/20 then?

  • Strong Privacy

yeah alright AFP, i see your tricks

  • +1

    All the prices have increased

    • +1

Yep was about to sign up then saw the increase.

    • +4

Booo. So if we've just signed up the price is now increasing?

      • +2

You get the price you signed up with.

        • +17

Neptune, raising prices after gaining traction here is a serious misstep. You’ve just damaged trust, and many including myself will remember this. Your reputation is now at risk.

          • -5

@SpeedAU: Why?. Lots of specials have a time or capacity limit. And they were not the ones that posted it in the first instance. I don't see an issue in ending it.
Everyone keeps what they signed up for.. so.. The current price is actually pretty good anyway. In fact given its likely to be causing them to make a loss as it was very very cheap… I think hats off for honouring all the sign ups before they updated it.

            • +5

@Ruprect: small company vibes, F5 then change all their prices lol..dead to me

              • +2

@SpeedAU: No doubt its a small company issue. A couple of dozen sign ups to someone like Aussie Broadband would not even register but a couple of dozen sign ups for a small provider could double their size… Everyone would have liked to see this special last longer so they could sort things out and get on board but I really do understand why they pulled it after about 4 hours or something. I wish them well. Hope to see them here again but better prepared next time.

                • @Ruprect: they only have a /24 so at most they could have is 240ish people before they have to increase to buy another /24

    • +1

      HaHa but not funny…!!!

    • +1

Well I can see that it is needed as I am one of those who signed up to the 1000/50 plan. The sign up process and the churn is fanstastic especially as you have the choice to use the same port on the NTD that helps if you are churning a gig plan (will bork if you use different FTTP ntd port). Portal is excellent doing everything right with lots of info options etc.

The local speeds are fine.. to local speed test servers..

Now for the no so great.

Did a test of downloading files from a US usenet server using multi threads and max out at about 480Mbps.. For comparison, Leaptel is about 700 and Launtel about 800 (when they don't shape). So there is either shaping or capacity issues, probably at the POI as I worry about with these smaller ISPs.

To be fair to them, I will likely stay for the long term as these are the expected sorts of issues with an ISP is getting established… more customers will give them the ability to expand things like capacity and so on. If the service works well with streaming local based TV and sport outlets and the connect is solid I look forward to when the speed limitations on the high end plans are solved. Having said that, $130 is a lot if something is not working as expected.
