What are you planning of buying during this Black Friday coming up in about 1 week?

I need some ideas. I am thinking of looking at yearly costs and see if I can get any subscription at cheaper values. tbh, have not found any so far. Will keep on looking.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2024

    Planning of Buying

My whole life I've been saying "planning on buying". Can't believe I've been grammatically incorrect this whole time.
    TIL.

sarcasm, right? Well played. So subtle, I just couldn't be sure and had to do some googling.

ozbargain is such a waste of my time <sigh>

      • +9

Such a waste ON your time.

  • +6

Considering picking up a 7900 GRE if it comes down in price enough. Would need to be low $700s for me to bite. If nothing, I can wait till next Jan when RX 8000 and RTX 5000 are released.

    • +2

      you went full nerd there

  • +6

I'm planning of buying a few upgrades to IOT devices if the price is right.

        • Replacing a Smartthings hub with something that is a bit more home assistant friendly, though, I'm in the process of setting up a CloudFlare tunnel for it, so will see how that goes before Black Friday.
        • Upgrading a few smart bulbs. Might be a bit wasteful
        • Potentially a few more sensors - though undecided exactly what
        • +1

Can definitely vouch for the Skyconnect and the IKEA Zigbee stuff - that's what I've been using. The IKEA stuff is cheap enough (even without sales), and some of their newer releases don't use coin cells which is a definite plus.

Somrig shortcut buttons - two buttons, each with press, double press and long press (and release, which is semi-useless unless you're wanting a looping script like changing brightness/volume/temperature)

Was going to mention the Parasoll door sensors (which take a AA or AAA battery), but the page no longer is accessible on IKEA's site for some reason… if/when they become available again, much better than the Aqara ones. The LED on it flashes when it's triggered, said battery advantage (can use rechargeables), the magnet side is significantly slimmer (I have an internal sliding door that opens into the wall cavity and the Aqara one was always getting knocked off it's holder. The IKEA one has no issue slipping into the same cavity with the door).

I also picked up some Symfonisk controller knobs (does rotation and presses) that were on clearance. Handy for a simple volume control.

Their bulbs are also quite good. Fast responding, reasonably dim when dropped to lower levels (I know the Grid Connect ones I also have I end up changing to RGB over CCT for sleep mode).

          • @Chandler: Great… just found this…looks like I'm heading to IKEA. Been waiting for a decent AU certified Zigbee energy monitoring plug to come out :D

            *sigh*… max 300W motor :/

Edit: actually that might still be ok. My washer only gets up to ~150W when spinning, the ~2200W is when heating (which is resistive…) :|

Edit 2: I was wrong :/ average peak on spinning is ~400W, but got some weird peaks of 600W and even up to 1100W in it's consumption, and not when it's heating…

          • @Chandler: Ahh, nice. I've got SmartThings door sensors which take an annoying 2450 battery. Other sensors/switches are Xiaomi. Switches are mostly Hue and manged through the Hue Hub. I want to get rid of wifi smartbulbs entirely. The Ikea ones look like they could be worth a look - before I don't think they had many bayonet options, though, that looks to have changed now.

I've got a few basic automations running through Google/Hue at the moment but want to move everything to Home Assistant. One of the blockers is access to sensors from SmartThings which now seems to require a publicly accessible webhook which is a bit of a pain. I've already set up a Domain/Cloudflare tunnel but need to read through docs on configuration and properly securing things before completing it. I'll likely need to tunnel anyway to get Home Assistant working with Google Home so will likely need to finish that anyway.

Another project is to get sensors for power/gas/water use. Power is potentially through a device that reads pulses from the meter or maybe scraping from my energy provider. Maybe some automations based on solar feed to minimise power sent to the grid.

I would also like to automate sprinklers so may look for a device, likely off AliExpress based on very preliminary research.

All that said, there's a bit of the old if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

            • @ihfree:

which now seems to require a publicly accessible webhook which is a bit of a pain

eesh… I never go into the Hue or SmartThings ecosystems - started with a (WiFi) TP-Link bulb via Google Home, then when looking for projects to use my Raspberry Pi with I found Home Assistant and grew from there. The TP-Link bulb is still going well, and added some Tuya / Grid Connect bulbs before IKEA released their B22 ones (or I noticed they had them, whichever came first…). I definitely think moving away from WiFi is worth it, assuming you get enough Zigbee devices so that the mesh isn't flaky.

Another project is to get sensors for power/gas/water use. Power is potentially through a device that reads pulses from the meter or maybe scraping from my energy provider. Maybe some automations based on solar feed to minimise power sent to the grid.

This post is the one I have saved to follow if/when I get around to integrating my water meter.

Electricity I was thinking IotaWatt but they're not cheap (nor currently in stock)… In the mean time, I'm thinking of importing historical usage by following these posts. You could probably use this to automate scraping exported files…

I thought I had something saved for gas but could only find what I'd saved for controlling the HWS. I'm bottled, so no meter to try and pull data from.

I would also like to automate sprinklers so may look for a device

A weather station is in my immediate future. Automated sprinklers would be nice, but need to get the sprinkling part sorted first haha.

All that said, there's a bit of the old if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

              Home Approval Factor is real…

              • @Chandler:

                A weather station

Lol, another thing to add to the list of things I'm planning of buying.

A lot of weather stations broadcast on bands that can be picked up by a tv tuner. May be worth exploring depending on your neighbours.

                • @ihfree: Yeah I had heard that. Learning how to read wireless data is something I'd like to do, but is a little daunting and time is always a problem. Have thought about getting myself a Flipper Zero which would do some of what I'm immediately interested in (433 MHz, IR) as well as being a cool little devices to dabble with.

I do have some Broadlink devices, but being proprietary the raw data isn't readily accessible. I have a 433 remote for a ceiling fan that I haven't managed to get Home Assistant to learn the codes for, not sure what exactly the issue is. I am yet to try with the receiver turned off (I came across a post somewhere suggesting that the receiver could be interfering somehow - doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but figured I'd try it just in case…). The Broadlink's have no trouble with it by themselves (though the Broadlink app), so it's obviously not a hardware issue.

On top of that the wireless controller for my HWS (which I've found some guidance on) is something else I want to try and get HA controlling. I've also wondered if I would be able to wirelessly read my meter data (although that's full of concerns), and then also any nearby weather stations as you have mentioned.

        • home assistant friendly, though, I'm in the process of setting up a CloudFlare tunnel for it

The CloudFlare tunnel for HA works great, so simple to setup and rock solid.

What language is this of which you speak?

      • +2

Same as the OP. Sounds like you donā€™t speak of it.

Cheap annual SIM plan, preferrably <=$60.

    • Amaysim annual plan is currently $60

      • $175 or $300?

        • +2

          no, $60

          • @jv: Is it targeted for past/current customers?

            https://www.amaysim.com.au/sim-plans/12-month-sim-plans

            • @ihbh: past/current customer, still don't gt a 60 plan

            • @ihbh: Activate the Amaysim plan (eg. buy the $30 28-day SIM for $10),
and then renew this plan, for $60 for 12-months on talk-and-text ONLY (no data).

          • @jv: No, $175 or $300

            • +2

@Ade99: $60 unlimited talk & text (no data).
              Must be a current customer.
Sign up for the cheapest monthly plan, then go to change plans and you will see the $60 option.

How much cheaper can iPhones on Black Friday compared to Apple Stores?

      • +1

Usually the benefit is some sort of gift card with purchase, and you may be able to pickup discounted gift cards to buy it with.

      • I'll be getting a refurb so hoping a deal on these.

  • +3

Thinking maybe lg c4 oled for PC monitor.
And chest freezer for picking up 1/2 -1/4 sides of butchered meat.

    • I got a standing Chiq hybrid fridge/freezer (you select the mode) easier to get everything out when you need it in comparison to a huge deep, cold box when something you want is buried

  • +6

Want to buy a pair of headphones, headphone amp, monitor arm and vesa adapter for my 42 inch LG TV, maybe some KEF speakers and a speaker amp too if it goes back on sale. Are any of these things going to be on sale, probably not, but a man can dream.

CPU (13/14700 or 13/14900) and Z790 mobo - 13th/14th gen has been dragged through the mud. Microcode instability and Intel's overall lacklustre response has hurt their brand. Couple that with AMD x3d chips dominating and the fact that the LGA1700 platform is defunct could lead to some very deeply discounted components.

I posted a deal a little while ago where Amazon US was selling 12900KS for $429AUD delivered. Maybe something better will pop up.

    • +2

Me too. I have a i5 12400, wouldn't mind snagging a i5 14600KF at a cheap price (though I guess that might not happen since it sounds like most of the issues were more high end CPUs)

      • +3

While it seems that way, Intel have signalled that it does impact those SKUs, albeit it being more rare/slow to show up. Even if impacted units are only a few percent, Intel's response has destroyed a lot of brand loyalty.

Good luck to you. Also as a tip, not sure about the other companies but Scorptec (from this coming Monday onwards) launch their sales at 11:00am - so check it out then and if anything's good grab it before it sells out (their IG post shows what days they're selling what).

      • +1

        Tomato

        • prefer bbq, any deals?

          • @OZKap: This is the source for 2esc, it's your comment from 2 minutes earlier:
"If a deal is good during the year I buy, if a deal is good during black friday i buy." You agree with 2esc, Black Friday deals can often be had at any time of the year.

            • @BargainMe: an anecdote is not data

A deal being available at other specified times (e.g. boxing day, prime day) is not the same as "Majority of black friday deals you can usually get any time of the year."

              Its usually for suckers.

"Black friday is only for suckers" is only true for suckers that buy something because it says "sale" without checking price history etc. It's a time of year when products across many categories are often available for cheaper.
