    4-week postage though :shocked face:

    • The only reason i can think of for a 4 week delivery for a so called item in Australia is if it's actually being drop shipped from overseas.

  • +3

Wish I didnt have to compromise with HDR10+ with apple TV or lossless Atmos with Shield. I'd snatch up a box that supported both the second it came out.

    • Can you clarify what you mean by compromising with "lossless Atmos with Shield"?

      • +2

Apple TV doesnt support lossless spatial audio (Atmos/DTS:X)

        • +2

So your saying just get the Nvidia Shield then?

          • +2

@avjaMASH: Shield doesn’t support HDR10+ so it depends on which you care about more

            • +2

@BepisCola: Only matters if using a Samsung TV. Both support DV.

            • @BepisCola: Shield does Dolby vision and hdr10. As well as lossless audio codecs , not just Atmos but also the other ones. Till apple tv does lossless, I wont ever switch to them.

              • +3

@lonewolf: Common misconception that the Apple TV can't do lossless multichannel audio. OP is absolutely right to call out specifically "lossless spatial audio". TrueHD and DTS-HD can be decoded to PCM and passed losslessly by the Apple TV. Furthermore, Atmos and DTS:X tracks are still decoded losslessly to PCM, you just lose the spatial information.

If you don't have an Atmos setup you will see zero impact from the Apple TV.

                • @tp0: Thats fine if people want to spend high end dollars on a system that in this day and age if it supports lossless Audio then it will also be supporting Dolby Atmos / DTS , the idea of sending it instead as PCM and losing some of the information may appeal to some who are desperate to have a Apple product, for others i presume they will still stick Nvidia shield TVs.

I have vodafone tvs, Google TVs, Firestick TV 4k Maxes as well as Firecube and Apple TV 1080 and 4k models. But when it comes to any of my proper systems that i use to watch movies, i still go with my nvidia shield TVs.

                  • @lonewolf: If I want bitstream lossless audio I don't use a Shield because it's an expensive, 10 year old piece of junk. I use a modern Amlogic device running CoreELEC which also supports HDR10+ and working Dolby Vision.

The Shield might seem like a jack of all trades but it's a master of none.

          • +1

@avjaMASH: Depends on your personal needs. While I use the shield 90% of the time, I still think it kinda sucks ass, plex runs like shit on it, and is all around slow.

But it, and the Fire Cube 3 are the only real media players that support lossless Atmos, so if you have an expensive soundbar or home theatre system its hard to justify losing out on its potential with the Apple TV.

I have a Samsung TV, so no Dolby Vision for me, which is why I was complaining that the shield also doesn't support HDR 10+.

If you dont have a $$ soundbar or home theatre I think the apple TV is better.

            • @Smitty1997:

The cheaper tube Shield or the Shield TV Pro? The tube is an awful device and should never have been released.

If your Shield TV Pro on the other hand is slow, then you need to open it up and remove all the dust that builds up.

              • +3

@skittlebrau: The Shield is running a 10 year old CPU. It's slow, dust or no dust.

                • +2

@tp0: Tegra X1+ is still faster than a lot of other media streamers, yet those other media streamers (like FireTV) still work smoothly. I think there's something else hardware-wise (eg. dust) or software that's going on with your Shield.

Try doing a factory reset. I had the same exact problem with two of my Shield units (no dust build up) and that fixed it. You can also replace the launcher too.

I used to run a Shield (Plex only) and an Apple TV 4K (streaming apps) side-by-side, but eventually decided I would rather give up lossless Atmos and deal with one single interface for simplicity sake, so I'm now on Apple TV 4K and quite happy.

              Block-quoteDepends on your personal needs.> Block-quote

Indeed. If a person is just wanting the box for watching paid streaming services from, then an Apple TV 4K gen 3 box is the better choice because it provides higher/superior quality in terms of picture quality, and lossless audio is irrelevant, because streaming services use lossy audio for movies and TV show content, no streaming service offers lossless audio that’s found on Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray physical media optical discs.

For content in higher quality including lossless audio than what’s on paid streaming services then that’s what I bought and own the disc for, to use. I’m personally not interested in ripping my 1080p BD and 4K Blu-ray disc collection and using Plex or anything else like it.

Ugoos AM6B Plus. One of the only boxes that can run Dolby Vision Profile 7 FEL too.

      • Ill have to look into it.

        Cheers,

  • If I didn't already have 3 of them (one of each version) I'd definitely snap this one up. Great price.

We need to let Apple know. Otherwise it might not happen.

      • +4

No you got that wrong, Apple will let you know, and whatever they give you, you will love, cherish, worship and pay through the nose for, you as the customer have no say, they know what you want before you even know what you want… :P

I for one, still pray to Saint Jobs before every Apple Event, and then listen to the words of his disciple, Tim Apple.

    • +8

And it won't be $165 and also, that sounds absolutely terrible.

    • +1

Will it be better htan the 2019 nvidia shield for plex though

      • +2

I've had 3 shields for plex and had nothing but issues with freezing etc. Unfortunately

        • +5

My god someone that has had the same experience as me. The shield sucks ass but everyone seems to love it.

          • @Smitty1997: Not sure what issues you have. I know tonnes of people including myself who has 5 shield TVs. 2015, 2017 and 2019 models..no issues besides the 2019 lower specced tube model can run low on space which can cause issues if it is low.

Shield TVs have been around since 2015 and have pretty much always been considered the king of streaming devices especially for people who also want lossless audio codec support.

            • @lonewolf: While it might sit with Plex more then Nvidia, the app has just never run good for me on 2019 Shield Pro, especially with high bit rate content. Constant crashes, laggy/stuttery playback which can sometimes take 5+ Seconds to pause. Tested a few times side by side exact same file with the ATV 4k and even my shitty fire stick in the living room TV and have never has issues with them.

Also no HDR 10+ is lame.

              • @Smitty1997: I play full remux Blurays 4k HDR / Dolby Vision with Dolby TrueHD Atmos or DTS Master . Only times i have ever come across stuttery playback is when the HDMI cable i am using is not capable of handing the bandwidth being put out.

Perhaps try a good quality HDMI cable, I know with the higher bitrates, that becomes more of a necessity. Even for shorter lengths, personally I still try to go with Ruipro or a couple of the other known high bandwidth approved cables.

                • @lonewolf: Could I have a reason for this or a link to more info on this.

Shield isn’t even 2.1, so I’d imagine my 48gbps cable wouldn’t be the bottleneck.

My issues with the 2019 shield have passed through a few different setups, first my c1, then a Chinese projector I had for a while and now my qn90d.

                  • @Smitty1997: Cables can state whatever speed they want, it doesnt necessarily mean they can handle it. I have come across many HDMI cable bandwidth issues in my systems once my hardware became 4k HDR with lossless audio equipment. Sometimes i even found some HDMI cables that would work for a while and then start to have issues.

Initially i thought i only needed better quality cables for my Projector due to the distance of 10m, but even my Sony 85inch i have had hdmi issues with some cables that i used. So in any of my rooms that are using higher bandwidth AV stuff, i generally try to get decent to good quality cables. If its rooms that are lower bandwidth required setups then most hdmi cables i find work fine.

          • @Smitty1997: A venn diagram of Shield users and ozbargain people no doubt has significant overlap.

Everyone else uses chromecast, firestick or Apple TV.

            • @entropysbane: Pretty much any home theatre forum i know or whirlpool as well. or for that matter anyone that knows. Most people i have seen start off with google Chromecast or Google tv and then move around to other devices. Generally seem to finally end up on the Shield as their endgame device.

              • -1

@lonewolf: That’s like a resident of Ultimo saying all of their friends vote green, so everyone else must too.

                • @entropysbane: Perhaps you should reread what i wrote. goes completely against your initial statement. Then again it sounds like you have an agenda so no point having a discussion with people like that.

        • +1

I also had so many issues streaming plex to it while the PS5 right next to it had no issues (other than expected issues due to lack of codec support).

For some reason even when connected via ethernet it refused to direct play and caused and stuttered and froze like crazy.

What will Apple intelligence do for a TV box?

  • Will this stream movies from my Macbook to the TV quicker? Currently getting lag with VLC player direct to TV

    • +1

Yeah, install Plex server on your Macbook and the Plex app (known as the client) on the ATV. I stream 4k remux files to my TV no issues.

Also, the moving wallpapers in the ATV are stunning. I said goodbye to my chromecast and firesticks last year and haven't looked back.

      • -1

Apple tv doesn't support lossless audio, so remux are not as worthwhile as you won't be getting the lossless audio from them.

        • Bummer, thanks for the info mate. My HDD space appreciates it 😁

  • I keep away from MacApp. They sold me a pair of fake airpods 4.

    • I've bought 2 packs of 4 apple air tags and they were legit.

      • +2

Can confirm, I've also purchased AirTags and AirPods from MacApp eBay previously.

For anyone wondering; MacApp eBay is operated by Wireless1.

      • Correct. I was wondering why I wasnt getting the notification to purchase Applecare.
        Box
        Case
        Screenshot

        • +1

Not trying to shift the blame but what probably happened is that another customer bought then returned, instead sending back the fake. Since it was sealed I guess they just sold it on again. Still bad practice if it happened that way, they should be recording serials for this reason.

        • Are you sure? they don't look fake to me and there are no airpod 4 replicas out yet

          • +2

@Quarter Pounder: There are entirely counterfeit Apple products that look completely legit.
Apple pencils too that even register on the ipad as legitimate and charging when they have no battery at all.

            • @0jay: I know - i used to be very familiar with them. There are no current airpod 4 replicas. Does anc/transparency work?

Replicas would have a valid serial number on the box

        • -1

I have some AirPod 4’s and there is definitely no stamp or marking inside the receptacle.

  • -8

newer google tv is better option than this

    • +1

      lol you're dreaming.

    • +2

Please explain. I understand that it was released with yet another out of date, underpowered SoC. No WiFi 6 in 2024 is also very silly.

      • -1

Agree 100% with you on streaming support and chip.
Was referring to freedom of things you can do with Android ecosystem.
        RetroArch , VPN support etc

        • tvOS supports VPNs and RetroArch is in the App Store.

          • +1

@tp0: Don’t use Retroarch on tvOS. Storage on tvOS is meant to be more like cache than permanent storage.

This means ROMs and saves can be wiped at any point.

            • @PainToad: Can't it be configured to use network storage instead? I haven't really gotten into it myself. I have old consoles and Wii Virtual Console for that stuff.

              • +1

@tp0: Nope :( such a shame because the hardware is a beast.

    • Depends on your use case. If you're side loading apps, a Android based device.

Personally, I got rid of CCwGTV due to banner advertising for commercial TV shows in Australia. Comparing the old Google device - Apple TV is much more snappy, there were occasional freezes, less space(fixed in the new version), Youtube allows multiple profiles.

  • Is this better than an amazon firestick 4k.

    • +1

At twice the price, it would want to be.

The ONN 4K Pro is available on amazon US for $63.95AUD delivered which is a very good option and better than the Firestick 4K

      • +1

        do you have one ?

can the ONN do plex/stremio + kayo and all local catchup apps - iview , 7plus etc?

        cheers

        • +1

I haven't got one yet, but it runs vanilla android and there is discussions on Whirlpool with comments from folks saying that although it says it's only US compatible, they have been able to install anything they wanted on it.

          Lots of good info here
          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/3rvj8y78

Edit: You might need an AU power adapter with a barrel connector. I am sure I will have one from an old device around here somewhere. Either that or grab a cheap one from eBay.

      • +1

Where were you 3 months ago, would have gone this route.

Instead I recycled an old laptop with no screen and use a wireless keyboard and mouse.

        • +2

          janktube ftw!

        • +1

A few years ago, I did similar with an old surface pro with a broken screen. Worked fine, but the quiet background fan noise was annoying - TV boxes are much better, IMO.

          • @ihfree: Yeah I've got it hiding in a cable net under my desk so it's enough out of the way to not hear it.

    • +1

Much much better. Unless you need to sideload APKs. Otherwise chalk and cheese.

    • This is like comparing a BYD to a Ferrari.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, got one :)

  • After the iOS upgrade, iPADS can no longer be used for Apple Hubs, that broke my Meeros Controllers working with CarPlay.
I use a FireCube for TV, but is this a decent option as a HomeHb?

    • +3

Yes! It's a Thread border router too.

    • This is great for that because it's always on, draws little power, and doesn't usually leave the home.

  • Can you install Plex server on ATV like you can on a Shield?

    • No. It's not exactly recommended to run a Plex server on a Shield anyway.

      • Thanks, I guess it will be good for retro gaming?

        • +1

Which one? The Shield is definitely more established in that it has been an option to emulate on it from day 1. The Apple TV however is vastly more powerful and recently had emulators made available for it.

  • This has smart home hub right

    • +1

Yes. Apple TV automatically becomes a home hub when you add it to HomeKit

  • +1

Currently have 1st gen. From reddit:

    The main upgrades from gen 1 (2017, A1842) to gen 3 (2022, ethernet = A2843, Wi-Fi only = A2737) seems to be:
    SoC: A10X -> A15
    RAM: 3gb -> 4gb
    Storage: 32 or 64 gb -> 64 or 128gb
    Output: HDMI 2.0b -> HDMI 2.1 w/QMS & VRR
    4k30 DV & HDR10 -> 4k60 DV & HDR10+ & HDR10
Cooling: Active (fan) -> Passive (heatsink)
Controller, can be bought seperately though

What I'd like to see that's missing:
    AV1 hardware decoding support
To me it seems that the gen 3 is really only an upgrade if:
You got a TV that supports HDR10+ (Samsung) and has access to such content.
You want 4k 60fps HDR content on YouTube.
    You game.

  • New to this, what are the advantages of using this box vs Apple TV app on Android tv?

    • +3

      Apple tv is very fast

    • +2

This is more than the Apple TV App, you can use for Plex, Netflix ect.. and if your TV is old will be a lot faster and normally easier to use than MOST TVs.
I personally use FireCube based on Android, and basically no restrictions in what I can load.
Parents have one of these, and despite no dedicated buttons they find it simple to use, but very locked down.

So comes down to consumer preferences.

      • This,
but also depends on if your TV is old and the supplier isn’t giving it anymore updates, or the TV’s processor is a laggy piece of shit, or you have a horrible vidaa running Hisense. Then you just use the ATV as the TV UI.
