That's a pretty good deal, the base price for the "new" 16/256 is $1799, and upgrading that model to 512GB somehow costs $300.
This would be a great machine for most people, and waiting for an M4 model isn't likely to gain you much more - performance-wise anyway…
M4 has much better NPU for AI lenient tasks, but thats it

That's a good point. Given the limited ports on an MBA, a dock is needed most of the time, which presumably supports two screens?

Everyday use, this is more than enough and probably more convenient than a Pro.
M4 is not needed unless you really need the ‘AI’ feature, which I really don’t know what it genuinely means these days because everything is about AI.

M4 base model 14 inch macbook pro is better, if you want more ports and the 120hz screen. However thats $2250 AOC price for 16GB/512GB storage. It does have a fan too for a bit of active cooling and better speakers. Over all its a better machine if you can afford the extra $500 odd.
Remember,
Apple also gives a generous 3months of AppleTV+ with every apple product purchased.
