Does 'open box' mean ex-demo? Or returns?

    • +1

      Maybe return item? Or demo.

      • +1

It could possibly be a demo. Or maybe a return?

    • +1

I reckon will be similar to those renewed from JB hifi, pot of luck what you gonna get …

    • +1

Staff confirmed that it was brand new. No marks on it.

  • +28

This model is introduced in Nov 2020. With Apple's model of 7 yrs OS upgrade support, you have only 3 yrs or so to get an upgrade. I am not sure if this is a real bargain or not.

    • +13

Even if you only get 3 years out of it (you won't, it'll last much longer regardless of OS upgrade eligibility), it's a lot of hardware for the price.

      • +6

Do folks not care about security updates? I'd feel like I was rolling the dice each time I connect it to the Internet.

        • +2

There are alternate OSes though likely not at a daily driver stage. Hopefully, Linux on Apple Silicon will be much more mature by the time MacOS support ends. There will also likely be unofficial ways of running newer versions of MacOS on the device.

          For reference, project site: https://asahilinux.org/

          • +1

@ihfree: I read it as implying that an unsupported OS can continue to be used without issue, but yeah totally agree that if you don't want to run osx then Linux would be a good option and that looks like a cool project for it

            • +1

@luisvsm: I would not be online with a OS that is out of support. I meant there are other options to continue with a supported OS after MacOS support ends.

          • +1

            @ihfree:

            alternate OSes

Not that black and white with Apple silicon devices, these are tightly coupled SOC's and you can't just boot off a uefi usb and install another OS. Installing Linux natively has been done, but it involved downgrading the SOC firmware and hacking it to bits. This is the equiv of trying to install Android on an iPhone, Apple do everything in their power to prevent it.

              @dbnewman89:

Apple do everything in their power to prevent it.

So far they haven't and in at least one case that have made changes that would help the project. Discussion here - https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/what-happens-to-asahi…

I've seen people use ChromeOS Flex on older Intel Apple devices.

              • +1

@ihfree: Older Intel devices were very friendly with other OS's, we have a headless ubuntu server running spotify connect on an old mac mini in the office ^_^

                • @dbnewman89: Both Intel and AS would have been easy enough to lockdown yet it hasn't happened in either case.

For reference, from the Asahi Linux page:

Apple allows booting unsigned/custom kernels on Apple Silicon Macs without a jailbreak! This isn’t a hack or an omission, but an actual feature that Apple built into these devices. That means that, unlike iOS devices, Apple does not intend to lock down what OS you can use on Macs (though they probably won’t help with the development).

The Asahi linux appears to be making progress. While I wouldn't buy with the expectation of Linux after the end of security support, I think there is a reasonable chance that there will be decent options for AS at that point.

        • +3

Security updates still seem to roll out past that age. Not sure where they draw the line on those though. They just won't promise to release a compatible full operating system update for older machines.

I've got an old 2014 Intel Mac Mini running as my movie server that is on the last compatible OS Monterey (which was released in 2021) and that still gets the odd security update despite being 10 years old, an old operating system and old intel architecture.

    16GB RAM in 2024 ?

    • +4

I have this one (minus the touch bar).

Great laptop build, though the screen hinge sometimes creaks now wtf. Battery life is amazing. Sound is very bassy / amazing. The OS is not so great but that's personal preference (I don't find MacOS intuitive like Windows).

Downside: the 16gb ram has its limits and it does occasionally slow the F down and freezes / restarts.

If I were to get another MacBook I would hesitate to spend so much on a 16gb laptop if I'm being honest.

      • +5

Can you stop with the FUD?

Your statement is meaningless without knowing what you're running on it. Except… we do know your use case and that your MBP is underspecced.

@shabaka: It's usually associated with Microsoft in the 1980s and 1990s. Whenever something interesting got released, they would say they have it in development too and just wait instead of buying a competitor's product.

            • @shabaka: Ah fair point.

Ok, well, take my point with a grain of salt.

I still would hesitate with 8gb, even as a general consumer. Especially because it won't be supported in a few years time.

              • @smartProverble: I'd definitely hesitate with a 8gb on a primary device for myself. Though, that said, most of the non tech people I know would be perfectly fine with 8GB devices.

I've set up friends and family with cheap 8gb Windows refurbs and they're more than happy with them.

I have a 16" M1 MBP with 16GB for work. I'm a data engineer and I rarely have any performance issues with it. I was never a Mac person either but this does work really well

    • +1

Currently typing on an old spare Chromebook with 2GB of RAM, so long as I don't set YouTube above 720p (which is the res. of the screen anyway) I don't run into any trouble.

  • +2

this is actually a good deal compared to the m1 air that keeps getting posted for low 11s, but yeh 3 years of updates kills the deal kinda

    • +1

The M1 air is alright. Good price to performance ratio.

      • +1

my point is the pro version vs air for the same price is the better buy here..

13" M1 for $1100 plus delivery (to ACT Metro = $32 parcel post, or $51 express post), so approx $1150 delivered… for an "open box" unit.

    OR

13.6" M2 brand new for $1449 delivered in less than 24h (sold and shipped from Amazon so their awesome warranty/customer support).
    https://www.amazon.com.au/2022-Apple-MacBook-Laptop-chip/dp/…

I think I'd rather pay an extra $300 for a brand new (not open box), newer model, superior product with better warranty support.

    • +6

You're not wrong, but the M2 only has 8GB RAM.

        • +1

this is what peak copium looks like guys

    • superior product with better warranty support.

What makes it superior with 'better warranty support'?

      • +2

Amazon vs smaller retailer. Personally, even dealing with warranty issues at Officeworks makes me wish I had bought from Amazon.

      • -2

The M2 kicks the crap out of the M1.

And if purchasing through Amazon (especially if they are the actual seller as in this case), their warranty support is widely regarded as one of the best out there.
I've used it many times in the past- no fuss returns.

        • +2

Wouldn't Apple handle the warranty, regardless of where it was originally purchased from?

        • +8

The difference in performance between a M2 and M1 is not as large as you might think.

        • -1

          @ufo no, it doesn't.

    • +4

It is a Macbook Pro and 16GB is a $300 option so you are comparing apple with … err wait.
FWIW as another poster pointed out, the performance between M1 Pro and M2 Air is not a huge difference: https://nanoreview.net/en/laptop-compare/apple-macbook-pro-1…

    • +2

BPC lists it as free delivery

    • +1

Serious question about the Amazon warranty - have you ever tried making a warranty claim 1 or 2yrs after purchasing a something like a laptop?

      • I believe Amazon only do refund/replacement.

  • +2

M1, with 16GB for this price is great. 256GB not that great.

TOUCHBAR *** I personally like the functionality of it, but i have recently dealt with 3 laptops in a new work environment that had dud touchbars, flickering like mad, honestly dont know why there hasnt been a recall / replacement program for it, considering how many epileptic warnings they put on their Apple TV+ programs 🥲

Theres no fix other than to put tape on it, or a 600 dollar replacement, honestly its a coin toss, so beware…

I would personally buy a new M3 Chip though its about 30% CPU upgrade, and faster SSDs if the 16GB is no enough - never buy 8 though, and thanks to ozbargain you can get an education discount from this store couple of hundred dollars off the RRP, pair that with the Everyday Rewards 10% and you get a decent chunk off

Education store (Purchased a M2 Mac Mini Last year, pick up same day no issues, but some people have reported been asked for ID 😂, get it delivered or dont be sus)

you can get these with more than 8GB of RAM???

  • I have a 16 inch Touch Bar i7 model, and it sometimes struggles with lots of tabs open, VMware etc. Would upgrading to M1 13 inch (bit of a screen downgrade) help?

    • +1

I did a similar upgrade (from an i7, to an M2) and it definitely seems snappier with heavy applications. But the real benefit to me is that it doesn't spin up fans at the drop of a hat like my old i7 did. In fact I'm not even sure I've ever heard it spin up its fans.

      • Same. I don't recall ever hearing the fan go. The battery also lasts 10 hours - where my colleagues with the older intel chip MBP's are getting a couple of hours at best.

  • +2

Its free delivery as per the listing on the webpage… i had to call them up to fix my order up as i inadvertently paid for delivery

    • +2

      It's been updated.

The original post linked to the site that definitely had postage as additional.

let's see those who bought this deal telling us what kind of quality you gonna get, perfect like new or covered with greasy finger prints …

  • +11

Gave them a call. There is no warranty from Apple on these. 3 months from the shop. They will repair it/get it repaired. Not sure how I feel about that.

I'd bite for $950 -$999 but I think its $100 too much for me.

Used ones selling for about $900 on ebay.

    • +2

If these are open box and still brand new (ie have not been activated yet), you’d still get one year of apple warranty

      • +2

Checked with the owner/manager and staff. They said they already confirmed with apple they won't honour the warranty which started when they were delivered.

I asked if they can extend their warranty past 3 months and they said no.

Also they are not on the authorised reseller list.

        • +3

That isn’t accurate, apple warranty starts when the device is first activated. You’ll also get the option to add AppleCare. Anyway I’ll either prove or disprove my hypothesis once I have it delivered in a few days and report back here

          • @JoeBogan: Does your tax invoice say open box? If not that should be enough to get it fixed unless they say its not an authorised reseller.

            • @El Grande: This is what the invoice says “ Brand New (Open Box CTO Model with 16GB RAM) Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar M1 16GB 256GB macOS - Space GreySelected an iPad 9th Gen or the 10th Gen (First Come First Serve, Limited Stock!): Apple iPad 10th Gen 10.9" WiFi 64GB - Silver”

          • @JoeBogan: Keen to hear back. Might make a decision to purchase based on your update.

Will probably wanna TRS it too

            • +4

@illumination: Will report back once I get it

              • @JoeBogan: Apple doesn't honour warranties from unauthorised retailers, never have.
They won't touch any device for warranty not sold through proper channels.

      • +3

I am guessing they were originally bought for a govt department or company where the warranty and support are normally linked to the company and not the device. Either the company decided they were not suitable, gone burst, got liquidated or downsized etc before the Macbooks get allocated to staff, so they were auctioned off unused and BPC were the successful bidder. Hence the warranty is not from Apple but BPC like El Grande said (to comply with Aust consumer law and all)…

        • +1

I believe you were on the money with these !

    • +3

So I just set up the MacBook, it is definitely not brand new , there some signs of use on the rubber pads underneath and some glue residue (I’m assuming from a label). It is essentially brand new however it has already been activated so no warranty from apple for these. I check the battery health which showed only one complete cycle still at 100 percent health. I’m still going to keep it and use it as it’s perfect for my needs. Let me know if you have any other questions !

  • +2

I was going to post this after work and ended up seeing this post. They had an option to snag a 10th gen iPad 64GB wifi for $349 which I also grabbed, congrats to the ones that grabbed that.

  • +2

I am waiting for the 2021 model deal as this model only has a 60hz screen.

    • +1

I finally bought one because the deal was great. The staff confirmed that it was brand new—no marks on it. You can still sell it for a good price if you don't want it.

  • Full, as new, apple warranty?

  • +1

    Touchbars on these always die.

    • +2

Worked perfectly fine for me from the time I bought to the time I sold to upgrade (last used on Macbook Pro Intel models).

    • The touchbar parts are cheap. It just takes some time and patience to replace it.

  • +1

Looks to be OOS. Mentions call for ETA.

    • +1

      All sold out.

  • +4

Got mine today - can confirm it’s not brand new. More like as new or 99.99% new. A few finger marks but easily wiped off. Charging cycle 3 times so considered new. Apple warranty expired so only can rely on bpc for warranty matters.

  • +1

o yes I have one of these except mine has 1tb storage and 16gb ram. got it back on release day back in 2020

  • Op forgot to add GST on top of $1099.

    • +2

      $1099 GST inclusive my dude
