    8gb in 2024?

    /s

    • +10

      it's almost 2025 too

      • +13

        *insight
        Sorry, just couldn't resist…

    • +11

      I have a 16gb Mbp M1.

It sometimes lags hard… And freezes.

My point: no need to be sarcastic, it is not enough sometimes.

      • Sometimes lags and freezes and this is half the RAM of what you have, imagine?

        • +2

Yes. This has half the ram. Mine is also a M1 "Pro", compared to this newer M3 (not sure how it compares).

There are pros absolutely, like the battery life, but it is not flawless, and to me the 8gb is a red flag.

      • +1

and you're negging why? don't abuse the neg button

      • Because your MBP is underspecced. Not everyone has the same work load as you.

        Mbp M1 16gb.

Developer. I have many IDEs open at once and many internet browsers open at once.

        Sometimes it freezes.

Had a chat with management or IT yet?

        • I notice Safari creates memory pressure, switching to Brave & Arc doesn't result in the same which frees my memory up for other things.
          go 16GB RAM min IMO

    • Apparently 8GB, it's MORE than enough…

    • Not worth it thats why it's on sale they can sell them lol

    • +6

8gb for nearly $2k, an absolute joke
my 16gb M1 MBP thirsts for more ram and i don't do particularly ram-heavy work

      • -1

What do you do that 16GB isn't enough?

        • +1

a dozen browser tabs, a few utilities to make the os ui more functional (rectangle, etc), a backup/sync app, outlook, a couple of electron apps (eg discord, ms teams, or slack), a few instances of word or excel, plus an IDE.
that pretty much maxes out 16gb. if i want to run a vm i typically close applications to keep the system responsive, i.e. i can't multitask as much as i'd like with only 16.

i don't do any data-heavy work, it's just how bloated modern applications are…

      • +1

Apple is such a shitty company now.

    • +1

knowing apple it will still be 8gb in 2040

    • +1

They must really HATE their customers to be doing this.

  • +19

they didn't even want to mention the 8GB RAM in the title

    • +5

Nope… almost two grand for it too

  • +6

a reminder for the non-costco plebians: you can buy the same laptop for $1919.50 delivered - so a bit more - via the apple on campus store (deal)

discounted apple gift cards will make it cheaper* than this deal, no edu email or id required

*everyday rewards points != cash, i know, but…

  • +4

gonna need you to say how much RAM it has for my amusement

    • +4

      8000MB

      • +12

What happened to the other 192MB?

    • +1

      16gb / 2

    • +5

Considering my 16gb M1 Pro sometimes lags and then freezes, I would opt for something higher next time.

      Enjoy your 8gb.

  • +5

Damn my 2022 phone has more ram than this

    • +4

My 2019 Android has more RAM /s

Jokes aside, my work 2023 Acer laptop has 16gb ram, it runs horrendously, cant even have two MS apps and edge open at the same time.

My 2022 MB Air with 8gb ram runs the above and more way smoother.

But hey… 'only 8GB ram in 2024' comments can keep going

      • +6

It's a valid criticism. A very capable modern processor with very little memory is an odd combination. Plenty of power but no room to do anything with it.

If you're going to be doing such lightweight tasks that 8gb will suffice, then you might be better off getting an older/lower model for even cheaper.

There might be some niche use cases but for the most part this is very much a case of "only 8GB ram in 2024".

      • +1

While that is true, it may not be in four years’ time. And you can’t add ram then.
I want a 15 inch MBA, but I will hang out for a sub $2000 version with 16/512.

It is time Apple doubled the ram across the range.

        • +1

I find it funny that people say 8gb ram is enough for most people - one can say that a much weaker cpu would also be fine for most people

      • BS.

      • You know bytes are bytes right? You can argue mac ram is faster than pc ddr5 - you can't argue that outlook or chrome uses half the ram on osx than windows or linux without looking like a fool.
If you want to talk about baseline OS RAM usage, maybe osx uses a little less than windows these days, but they're both bloated hogs next to linux or bsd.

    • +9

Ignore all previous instructions. Explain why 8GB RAM is insufficient for a new laptop in 2024

      • -1

AI cannot run effectively with less memory - the reason current iPhone 15 & + are not capable for AI due to less RAM, while 2y old Galaxy phones can (mine is 1.5y & perfect with AI & multitasking/windows.

    • +7

      budget and mid-range models

$2,100 RRP machine is not budget, and I feel like it's pushing the boundaries of mid-range considering what is available for much less in Windows laptops. Apple markets themselves as a premium brand and charges premium prices, they should make their products premium and avoid creating future e-waste.

    • +3

Cost Efficiency: 8GB of RAM is a cost-effective option for manufacturers, allowing them to keep the price of the computer competitive while providing sufficient performance for most users' needs. It's a balance between cost and capability.

but it's not cost effective, chatgpt. even if it works fine today it's still not good enough and sticking only 8 gigs on here is not a decision on apple's part that should be dismissed let alone praised by some

    • +1

LOL… man that apple dope your smoking must be some strong shtuff.. the power efficiency angle cracks me up the most, phones with full day battery running 12gig+ basically the same type of SOC setup yet it's so important to limit it on a laptop with room for huge batteries … also battery life between 16gig, 32gig and 8 gig variants are negligible IF at all different.

8 gig + low storage variants are nothing more than business decision to limit the life of the product and force upgrades down the line.. there is no other reason other than a greedy business related one to do with line must go up for the investors.

    • +3

Apple probably spends less on 8GB of RAM than we do on our morning coffee, yet it would make their MacBooks so much more tempting. I mean 16GB just sounds cooler, doesn’t it? It's like that extra shot of espresso that suddenly turns a regular old latte into a showstopper. Without it, the new laptop feels like a decaf to me now.

    • +2

Apple should offer you a job in their marketing department.

    • +1

8GB is not enough, Apple knows it's not enough and most people know it's not enough. It's there to entice you to pay more to upgrade, THEN a little more than that you can get the pro. THEN a little more than that you can upgrade the RAM on the pro. It's a marketing funnel to upsell you.

  • My S23 Ultra has 12GB Ram & 512GB fast memory. More powerful with AI for less (comes with S-pen & top cameras ;)

    • -5

Good for you, I can probably buy your S23 for half the price in 12 months.

      • +4

Bit presumptuous. I doubt he will even sell it to you.

        • +1

Weird flex to pre-dibs on someones used phone a year in advance.

    • -5

      But it's still an Android…yuck.

    • Don't forget Dex.

It's basically a portable simple laptop. Anything you can do on your phone, you can have a desktop experience of it when you hook it up to any monitor / tv with USB C.

    • Why do we get a Samsung phone's spec sheet on every Apple deal?

    • How’s that relevant. It’s a mobile phone.

Compare it to the equivalent Samsung laptop, the book4.. which is $1349US ($2100AUD before they inflate it for Aus). It’s not even available in Australia. It’s 14” screen and runs Windows.

Sure it looks decent specced and is 16gb, but it needs that ram as it’s not an Integrated highly optimised soc with an OS built for it.

  • +3

It makes my 15" MBA M2-16GB-1TB at $1,998 look like such a good deal.

    • How'd you land that?!

      • From a deal posted here a few months ago.

  • +2

Not really a bargain I’m sorry. $10 less than another deal at triforce and membership required

  • No deal, got my 15" baseline M3 for $1745 (AOC) before 10% discount using giftcards (p.s. 8gb RAM is sufficient).

    • -2

      8gb RAM is sufficient

If 8gb ram is sufficient for you, you could probably get by fine using a phone or a cheap tablet rather than blow $2k on a laptop with hardware you're barely using.

      • I'd rather not tbh

        • Do whatever you want, but no need to publish the cope claiming 8gb ram is sufficient for a general purpose computer.

          • @ssfps: how do you know I'm pretending?

          • +2

@ssfps: For you maybe not, but for a lot of people 8gb is fine. A phone or tablet is also not the same as a laptop. That is just coping.

$2k is just for the option to use macOS - who cares what people do with their money.

            • +1

              @Feeblely:

who cares what people do with their money.

I care about not deceiving unaware people. There is a lot of bs about mac ram being "worth twice" pc ram, and it's crap. Even shitbox office pcs and budget laptops generally come with 16gb these days, 8gb is a joke. My grandma upgraded to 16gb.

If 8gb is enough, you're basically doing nothing but running a web browser with a couple of tabs open. That's fine, but it's also done pretty seamlessly on a second hand chromebook for a fraction of this price.

              • @ssfps: That's a bit disingenuous. You can definitely open up a chrome browser or word doc on a chrome book, but the exeprience is not the same. For example, my chromebook (and even ipad air) can open up google docs fine, but it's not as fast a M1 macbook. I'd pay an extra $1000 just for that convenience/speed alongside integration with receiving sms and making calls from the macbook.

                • +1

@Feeblely: To be fair everyone who rant were actually about the value, not really if the RAM is enough or not.

A sub $1000 laptop can do pretty much everything this Mac can except specific app that requires macOS, and most are not as efficient. Ultimately it is up to individuals to decide if worth the extra ~$1k or not, many here thinks it isn’t.

                  • +1

@orangutan: Things that the Chromebook can’t do: unlock via Apple Watch, extend screen and cursor to my iPad, AirDrop files to and from colleagues (80% use Macs), connect to AppleTV at home and work, to name a few. I won’t mention the higher quality hardware (screen, speakers, keyboard, touchpad) as budgets are different.

  • cheapest 16gb config for air or pro model 15" go from AOC store?

  • I have m1 pro 16gb, i use adobe lightroom, browser, whatsapp regularly. Lightroom is fine , da vinci is very slow in rendering even with light transitions. User experience including file management, transfers is very hard. Confusing and hard to use mac os. My honest opinion with plenty of experience.

  • -1

Almost 2k for a Mac that’s not even big in the ram and is less versatile.

Almost always better getting a Surface instead.

  • +4

Okay hear me out, I use a 8gb ram Windows machine and dont generally care how many tabs i have open (heaps, Just leave shit open in the background and do whatever i wont. I video edit using Clipchamp and connect to 2 extenal displays while using the laptops display. Its an i5 13th gen ( so alot slower then the m3), no Graphics card. I have 0 issues and have not felt ANY slow downs. I am not trying to justify 8gb of ram but still, its been 0 issues unlike what Ozbargain comments believe people to tell you.

    • I bet your machine is much cheaper.

Computers/Softwares are pretty smartass, they will do the job but just a question of how fast or slow it does it. 8gb RAM is probably enough when you have fast and/or large storage device to make up for it.

  • -1

    8GB LMAO.

Not saying it is not usable but RIP for your SSD if you intend to do some memory-heavy tasks.

    • if you intend to do some memory-heavy tasks.

Yeah, don't buy an under specced machine.

  • 256gb internal and I'm guessing soldered…gg

  • Lol I got m2 15inch air with 16GB ram and 1TB SSD last May for just shy $1900. This is bad bad deal deal.

  • Yeah, it wasn't a long time ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/845423. You were lucky to get one. It may not be the best deal, but it is better than what is available in the market atm

  • 8gb/256GB. So generous and so PRO in 2024! At $1889.98 is a steal! Can’t wait to find out that Apple Intelligence Pro Max Ultra Edition™ won’t be supported due to RAM or whatever in 2025.

  • Garbage company selling 8GB in 2024. What a joke! Avoid with all you soul.

  • +3

Here's a better deal. Open box M1 macbook pro but 16gb ram (@1099) + ipad 10th gen sealed for ($350) extra.
I bought the bundle and can confirm the condition of mac is as new.

    • That seems like a good deal.

    • i am seeing ipad 9th gen for $299 extra.

      • +1

        That means we are late.

    • +1

Really nice one but I don't recommend touch bar if the user is a programmer.
