Thanks for posting. For anyone unfamiliar with these offers, the only card you really want to buy here is the $20-500 variable denomination loaded with $500:

TCN Eftpos Gift Card Purchase Fee EDR Dollars Earned Profit/Loss
    $50 $5.95 $2.50 -$3.45 ❌
    $100 $6.95 $5.00 -$1.95 ❌
    $20-500 (loaded with $500) $7.95 $25.00 $17.05 ✅

These variable load cards are highly sought after so don't be surprised if you turn up at Woolworths to find that there aren't any left.

And remember, you must physically swipe these Eftpos gift cards to use them; they can't be added to your mobile wallet and they won't work online or over the phone.

    • Ooh thanks for the write up! Do they ever do 20x edr for these cards?

      • +3

Not really. Woolworths only ever offer 10x points on TCN Eftpos and Vanilla Visa/Mastercard gift cards. They do sometimes offer 20x points on Westfield Eftpos gift cards but those promotions are very rare and aren't really as good as they seem since you're limited to just $50 and $100 cards.

        • Figured that would be the case. Wasn't a fan of collecting $100 unless they were offering $200 instead

      • +1

It's really hard to find variable EFTPOS GC.

        • +4

Live in a town full of old people and there will be stock for the entire week.

    • Can you use your EDR 10% off when buying the variable load cards? (e.g.: buy a $500 GC and pay only $450 with the 10% discount and still get 10x points)

      • +5

Unfortunately not. The 10% off will pop up on the screen, choose yes but it won't discount the gift card.

        • +3

Thanks, just read the GC FAQ more closely and confirmed that it doesn't work.

        • Does it work for any gift cards?

    • Appreciate the breakdown @VantageXL - very sneaky

  • This promotion is not worth it.

  • Can I use this gift card to buy Apple gift card in Coles?

    • @WookieMonster

God father. Will these "eftpos gift cards" work with the Coles' FlyBuys deal? "Gift Cards can't be used to purchase other Gift Cards at Coles."

I am assuming they are treated like eftpos when trying to buy? Can you confirm either way? TIA

      • +2

It probably works, but I am not 100% sure, because you never know if Coles changes something in their checkouts today to automatically block them as a payment method for gift cards.

Yes, TCN eftpos gift cards are treated as a Card by the checkout (rather than a gift card issued by Coles Group), but Coles' checkouts can easily tell whether you are using a TCN eftpos gift card, Westfield eftpos gift card, or your bank debit card via eftpos.

        • +1

          Appreciate your feedback. Cheers!

I know a lot of the others can, but has anyone tried paying ATO bills with these?

    • Keen to know as well. You can't use them online obviously but wonder if there are any other ways.

    • +1

You can try using Australia Post to pay your ATO bill. However, it depends on the staff, as they may not accept it.

      • Is there a fee paying at australia post? I think staff won’t notice if you just swipe and enter the pin quickly without hesitation.

        • The ones who care will stop you without hesitation, the ones who don't care won't care. You still have to select an account after swiping, there's plenty of time for the staff member to cancel the transaction on their side.

          • @wavesgreen: But it works like any other debit card. You swipe. Select ‘Savings’ then enter the pin. How can they tell without looking at the card or seeing you look at the pin on the back of the card while entering it?
Anyway, you can hardly find a couple of these cards if you’re lucky. If paying ato is unsuccessful, they will work everywhere else.

            • +1

@Save 50 Cent: Because you've swiped your card. Almost no Australian-issued bank cards are swipe these days. Dollars-to-donuts then you are using a gift card. So a customer using a gift card to pay the ATO = those who care will instantly cancel the transaction to ask you what card you are using.

              • +1

@wavesgreen: Why do they even care? What difference does it make to Australia post?

                • +3

@georgedn: Some care, some don't. The ones who have had to fill out a report as why they allowed a transaction paid with a fraudulent gift card probably care more.

The majority of the time those funds are never able to be recovered and AusPost is on the hook for them.

Have it happen enough times and Head Office will no doubt put some heat on the Post Office Manager who will then pass that on to counter staff.

                  • @wavesgreen: Are these cards often purchased fraudulently? Surely Woolworths is on the hook if they allow it to be bought with a stolen card

                    • @surfingedge: Gift cards are obtained fraudulently all the time. There are multiple threads here on OzBargain. There are warning signs in stores. It's one of the most targeted and easiest obtained financial instruments through fraud.

              • @wavesgreen: Is it now allowed or they just dont like it. Seems crap to expect staff to enforce something that the system 'allows'.

                • @l2argain: I'll let you in on a little secret, the system 'allows' a lot of things, like A LOT of things. You might be shocked what you can get away with with AusPost if you have a lax staffer.

      • I read in the ATO website that I need to provide ATO barcode in order to pay at the post office. Do you know where I can find this ATO barcode ? I checked my NOA but I can't see any barcode.

  • How does surcharge work for eftpos?

    • +1

It will depend on whether the merchant in question surcharges payments routed through the eftpos network.

For example, ALDI does not levy a surcharge on payments from this gift card, because it does not surcharge payments routed through the eftpos network (but it applies a 0.5% surcharge on payments routed through the Visa or Mastercard networks).

If a merchant chooses to surcharge payments routed through the eftpos network, it should be added to the amount the merchant attempts to charge to your gift card. For example, if a restaurant levies a 1.2% surcharge on all card payments (including eftpos payments) and your order costs $50, the restaurant should charge a total of $50.60 to your gift card.

  • I thought TCN gift cards had no purchase fee? Are these the Him/Her etc cards?

    • +6

There are three varieties of "TCN" gift cards:

      • Prepaid open loop (e.g. TCN Eftpos, TCN Visa etc). These cards can be used basically anywhere so they have purchase fees.

      • Multi-retailer (e.g. TCN Him, TCN Her etc). These ones only work at specific retailers so they don't have any fees.

      • Merchant category (e.g. TCN Restaurant, TCN Pamper etc). These gift cards are limited to specific types of businesses so they don't have any fees.

This offer is just on TCN Eftpos gift cards, not the multi-retailer or merchant category cards.

      • Do you think we can use them to pay for Apple gift cards to earn the bonus flybuys?

      • What is the difference between TCN eftpos and TCN luxury please?

        • +4

They work exactly the same way but they're seen as different products in Woolworths' system so you can't buy TCN Luxury Eftpos gift cards if the promotion is just on regular TCN Eftpos gift cards like in this one. That also goes for the TCN Merindah-Gunya Eftpos gift cards that Woolworths sell.

Anyone know if you can buy the Luxury Escapes gift cards at Costco using these ones?

Just 3.4% profit on $500 gift card. I don’t understand the number of votes. Have I missed something?

    • Free money if you need to buy stuffs.

    • Just $30 for a hour of work. I don’t understand the number of people working. Have I missed something?

      • $34 x 2 accounts while doing the grocery shopping

        • I mean the regular type of work.

Went to WW Belrose (NSW) today at my lunch break but None there

Asked lady at the counter where the gift cards are sold if they received any and in her words “they were all sold by 9am”

So questions begs - is this bait advertising by Woolworths to get people in the door and not have stock ?

    • +1

I went to 4 stores before I found some. Yesterday they only had a few on the shelf. Maybe they're all in the freezer.

    • It's 100% bait advertising. I complained about this last time (Vanilla Master Card) and they credited me a goodwill 10k points, so worth giving them a call.

  • what's the cheapest way to convert these eftops cards into visa/master gift card which can be used online?

    • +1

Don't buy it, wait till Vanillas on sale.

      • how do you stack the vanillas? e.g.

        1. wait until sale for % off
        2. buy with cc earning amex pts or cashback
        3. wait until another type of GC comes on sale
        4. purchase GC with vanilla?

seems like the waiting cycle would be about 2-3 mths.
& are there other ways to stack beyond those 4 steps?

        • "3. wait until another type of GC comes on sale"

High risk move. They can be hacked (one of mine was earlier this year). Use them straight away, it's the OzB way.

    • these eftops cards can be used in Coles / ALDI in store to buy GCs.

      • i think eftops cards can just usded to buy GCs like Ulitmate/Restaurant Choice, but not Vanilla master/visa

        • so far only restricted in WWS store

  • +5

Please be aware even these cards are subject to tampering now. I found two $20-500 cards this afternoon at Marrickville (the full size one on Illawara Rd) which had a very obvious bend on the cardboard. Upon closer inspection (image), another barcode has been glued onto the back. I handed both to a staff member but there could be more in other stores.

    • Oof, cheeky buggers. Thanks, Good lookin out!

  • Well this promo is about to end…managed to find and buy 10x $500 GCs….so I got 25000 Qf points for $79.50. As I will aim to redeem for business class airfares, I will / should get more than $250 worth of value.
