  • Does the cashrewards gift card work at costco fuel stations?

    • +2

Don't bother, just found out it has a $100 minimum.

      • +2

7-eleven gift card has $50 option and works at all fuel stations I have tried.

        • "Fuel & Auto" is good option which is accepted at all fuel station as well as any car service/automobile store, but minimum $100
7-Eleven is good as accepted at all fuel station with $50 option available.

          • @hothot: You mean works at 7 eleven works at non 7 eleven also?
            Thanks

            • @onegpt: Yes, it works at many (but not all) service stations other than 7-Eleven.

Additionally, the 7-Eleven digital gift card also works at merchants using MCC 5499 (Miscellaneous Food Stores - Convenience Stores and Specialty Markets), because MCC 5499 is used at 7-Eleven stores not attached to a service station. For example, I used a 7-Eleven digital gift card at a random fruit market earlier this year.

              • @WookieMonster: @WookieMonster is there any way to tell what the merchant code of a retailer may be without doing an eftpos transaction and looking at bank statement?

                • +3

@dammit: Not really. Visa had a useful tool that would tell you the last reported MCC for a particular merchant, but that disappeared a few years ago.

If you want to see the MCCs for various merchants as reported by a few OzBargainers, there is this wiki page, but that is a very limited list.

          • @hothot:

7-Eleven is good as accepted at all fuel station

            @hothot, @DOGGYWOWWOW,

SOME fuel-stations DO reject them & if people accept some-risk, spend it asap to minimise blocking-risk, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16282624/redir

I've never bought fuel gift card before but I guess the AmpolCash Gift Card and Cashrewards Fuel & Auto Gift Card can be used on EG Ampol petrol station to combine Woolworth's petrol offer below?

with up to 14c off per litre of petrol. How to get up to 14c off:

    Save 6c per litre
when you boost this offer and top up your tank at one of over 500 EG Ampol co-branded locations

    Save 4c per litre^
when you spend $30 at Woolworths and Woolworths Metro

    Save 4c per litre~
when you spend $5 in-store at EG Ampol

    • +3

I guess the AmpolCash Gift Card and Cashrewards Fuel & Auto Gift Card can be used on EG Ampol petrol station to combine Woolworth's petrol offer below?

      Yes, that should be fine.

I have redeemed AmpolCash gift cards (both physical and digital) in conjunction with the Woolworths fuel voucher, in-store spend offer and/or a EG/partner offer (e.g. Origin Energy) at EG Ampol for a number of years now without any issues. Keep in mind you can only redeem AmpolCash gift cards in-store at the EG Ampol convenience store: you cannot redeem them through the Pay At Pump feature on the EG Club app (which is where you can pay for fuel from your vehicle instead of at the convenience store).

I have never used a Cashrewards Fuel & Auto gift card, but considering that is a prepaid Visa gift card, that should work fine in-store at EG Ampol (and possibly through the EG Club app too) if you are paying for fuel and most convenience store items.

      Save 6c per litre
when you boost this offer and top up your tank at one of over 500 EG Ampol co-branded locations

That sounds like an Everyday Rewards offer. If so, that offer should only work at EG Ampol service stations on mainland Australia, as EG Ampol service stations in Tasmania are currently excluded from the Everyday Rewards program. I don't think you are in Tasmania, but on the off-chance you are, don't be surprised if you find that you are getting a lower discount than expected. The upshot of being in Tasmania is that the Woolworths fuel discount there is 6c per litre…

      • +1

Yeah I received the offer email yesterday, and I'm in QLD, my car's petrol tank is only about 45-50L so I think the 4c per L when spend $5 in store is not a good deal unless I really need to buy stuff.

Also just wondering what is your way to stack petrol offers nowadays? I saw your older post but I guess some info are outdated

        • +8

My stacking strategy has evolved slightly since 2022, because I have access to different fuel discounts nowadays:

Service station Fuel discount offers Payment methods
EG Ampol 4-6c/L Woolworths fuel voucher + 2c/L Origin AmpolCash gift cards1
Ampol Foodary 4-6c/L Woolworths fuel voucher (selected locations only) + 4c/L NRMA AmpolCash gift cards
Shell Coles/Reddy Express 4c/L Coles fuel voucher + 4c/L Budget Direct Coles Group & Myer gift cards2

I then look at PetrolSpy to get a general sense of prices in my area. When factoring in these stacking options, I then choose a service station. If there is another service station that is cheaper after factoring in the fuel discounts, I’ll probably actually go to that other service station and then try to use a 7-Eleven digital gift card as a payment method. That is unlikely though, because I live in a place with no fuel cycle and there are not substantial variations in prices between independent service stations and the mainstream brands (which also means you will not see 40-50c/L variations you see with the fuel cycles in the major capital cities).

Of course, you may have access to other stacking options, so the Fuel Discounts wiki linked at the bottom of my old comment will tell you more about those.

          1. I usually only purchase AmpolCash gift cards when they are 5% off in-store at Ampol Foodary, and I use discounted fuel gift cards (e.g. 7-Eleven digital gift cards) to purchase them.

          2. I sometimes purchase Coles Group & Myer gift cards at Shell Coles/Reddy Express using 7-Eleven digital gift cards or Shell eGift Cards or Special Aussie Explorer gift cards, but I have noticed them missing at a number of service stations around me within the last month or so, so I am not sure whether Shell Coles/Reddy Express is withdrawing them from sale.

          • +3

@WookieMonster: You’re awesome, thank you again for sharing!

          • @WookieMonster: Wait, we can use Coles Myer GC at Shell Coles servo?

            • +3

@foxes28: Yes, they are redeemable at all Shell Coles/Reddy Express service stations… for now at least.

I am not sure how long Viva Energy - which now owns and operates Shell Coles/Reddy Express - will continue with this going forward. Viva Energy also owns and operates Shell OTR service stations (including a handful of Shell Coles/Reddy Express service stations have been rebranded to Shell OTR, e.g. Greystanes, Strathfield, Kingsford), and you can no longer use Coles Group & Myer gift cards, Flybuys, the Coles fuel voucher or Viva Energy discounts (e.g. Budget Direct, AFL) at those rebranded service stations. Keep in mind Viva Energy is planning to rebrand 80% of their service stations to Shell OTR by 2028 as well…

              • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks! Learned something today from you. Once I was planning to go to Shell Greystanes (they are usually cheaper) thinking I could stack the discount and pay with GC. Glad I cbbs to drive far that day

                • @foxes28: The Shell fuel finder says Shell eGift Cards work at Greystanes, but not physical Shell gift cards. The 7-Eleven digital gift card should work there too.

In terms of fuel discount offers, I think the only ones that currently work there is whatever OTR offers (which is currently quite limited).

          • +1

@WookieMonster: My latest is the car sales app 6c per litre off at BP, effectively bringing it to the cheapest servo in town, pay using 2.4% discounted e-gift cards/ and or other bonsu cashback such as this deal and scan BP app/QFF card for points

NRMA app 5c litre discount at Ampol, stacks with WW regards 4c discount, pay using 6% discounted e-gift cards and other bonus cashback such as this deal

I check fuelwatch and subscribe to the daily emails, giving you the next days pricing as well

            • @Spending2Much: I tend to avoid BP altogether. They use oil from Caspian sea. And that same oil money is used to ethnically cleanse and Genocide the Armenians.

          • @WookieMonster: How do you get the 4 cents off fuel offer from Budget Direct?

I will most likely change my home and content insurance to Budget Direct soon.

            • +1

@Chatgpttrue: You need to be a Budget Direct customer holding one or more of the following policies:

              • A Car insurance policy
              • A Motorcycle insurance policy
              • Roadside Assistance
              • Budget Direct Rewards membership.

You then need to download the BD Fuel Discounts app and register for the fuel discount offer.

You can find more information on this fuel discount on the Budget Direct website.

This offer will probably not work for you, but there are other Viva Energy fuel discount offers you can use at Shell Coles/Reddy Express and other participating Shell service stations. I suggest you have a look at the Fuel Discount wiki for more information.

          • @WookieMonster: Can the 2% CB shell GC offered here be used to get coles/myer GCs at coles express?

          • @WookieMonster: my NRMA blue membership expired as I did not want to pay beyond the trial period….do you know if the barcode will still be valid at Ampol Foodary?

            • +1

@zooter: just sharing my own experience….first time, it worked and it even said I now have 5c + 4c extra discount (effectively 9c) because I did a purchase instore

But when I tried to redeem this, there was a message that "NRMA membership not valid" (or expired or something along those lines)

So I guess no more Ampolcash cards for me till I understand how good fuel prices are in EG Ampol near my place….Shell is more convenient and better discounted and SB also has a 6% off regularly

@WookieMonster - in case you see this comment to update the wiki in terms of discounts on fuel

              • @zooter: Apologies for not replying to the prior comment, I did not see it until now!

I had no idea what the answer would have been anyway, and I am sorry to hear you found out the hard way. I'll update the wiki to reflect your findings.

          • @WookieMonster: Hey is there a full table of all discounts like origin, Toyota etc? Because they've changed recently… Only just realised that you get 6c off at BP with carsales app!

    • It was 10c/l off or 10×EDR pts on the same day last year. This time is 6 replacing 10.

  • -1

If you buy Shell/Ampol/BP card, you will restrict yourself to that particular brand only, but if you buy "Fuel & Auto" or 7-Eleven, it's accepted at all petrol station

    • +8

If you buy Shell/Ampol/BP card, you will restrict yourself to that particular brand only, if you buy "Fuel & Auto" or 7-Eleven, it's accepted at service stations using MCC 5541, subject to individual merchant acceptance.

      FIFY.

      For example:

      • Visa mandates (on page 18) that any pay-at-the-pump machines at a service station are to be assigned MCC 5542 (Automated Fuel Dispensers). You typically see these machines at Costco, U-GO, unattended Ampol service stations, unattended United service stations, etc. Clause 9 of the terms and conditions for 7-Eleven digital gift card and Cashrewards Fuel & Auto gift cards specifically lists MCC 5542 as an excluded MCC, so do not be surprised if it does not work at Costco, etc.

      • If you look at the Gift Card FAQ for where the 7-Eleven digital gift card has been reported to work and not work, you can see that not all service stations will always accept them as a payment method. For example, EG Ampol's checkouts will automatically reject 7-Eleven digital gift cards as a payment method if you are trying to purchase a gift card (e.g. WISH, Amazon), because 7-Eleven digital gift cards are effectively specially-branded Activ Visa gift cards and EG Ampol chooses to reject Activ Visa gift cards if you are trying to purchase a gift card. However, there should be no issue paying for fuel or most other convenience store items in-store at EG Ampol using a 7-Eleven digital gift card.

Also, if someone is happy to buy fuel from an Ampol-branded service station that accepts AmpolCash Digital gift cards, they would be better off purchasing an AmpolCash Digital gift card through this deal, because that offers higher standard cashback (2.5%) than the Fuel & Auto or 7-Eleven digital gift cards (2%).

      • btw, as an addendum to this, Shopback regularly has 6% off shell gift cards, so waiting for that might be a better option and so does Ampolcash which has regular 6% off

    • Yeah but $50 one is not there, so no deal.

  • +1

Aren’t you taking a risk that 711 card will be blocked from fuel outlets in the future (loophole closed)?

    • +1

Then just fuel in at 7-11?

      • +6

That would make sense if you have a 7-Eleven near you.

However, 7-Eleven currently has no locations in SA, TAS or NT, plus in other parts of Australia, it is not found in a lot of regional or rural areas.

    • risk that 711 card will be blocked from fuel outlets in the future (loophole closed)?

      @Moo Deng, @WookieMonster, Anyone,

FUEL only: if willing to risk & pay IN-store, I can use 7-Eleven-GC to pay for fuel @ BP & X-Convenience petrol-stations?

If block (loophole closed), I'm stuff, lol.

Maybe this risk should be CLEARLY noted-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/gift_card_deals_retailer_f…

      • +1

        I can use 7-Eleven-GC to pay for fuel @ BP & X-Convenience petrol-stations?

If you look at the FAQ you linked to, you can see who reported it working at BP and X Convenience service stations (and when this was reported). I personally have no idea whether it works at those service stations now, because I do not fill up there.

If it makes you more confident, I used a 7-Eleven digital gift card at Shell Coles Express earlier this week, so the “loophole” was not closed at that point.

Maybe this risk should be CLEARLY noted

        Done.

        • +2

I used a 7-Eleven digital gift card at BP yesterday. Verified 20/02/25.

        • Thanks

'However, Blackhawk Network (the gift card issuer and operator) can change where 7-Eleven digital gift cards work at any time without any prior notice. For example, Blackhawk Network may at any time:

Add or remove permitted MCCs, or
          Block all online transactions, or
Restrict its redemption to 7-Eleven locations only.

Please keep this in mind if you are not intending to use 7-Eleven digital gift cards at 7-Eleven.'

      • A local X-Convenience petrol station did accept 7-Eleven GC, lucky 😅.

Money-back was approved in 1 day: maybe because last use CashReward in Oct-24 ?

        • Yup. Used at x convenience (bp) the other day

  • +3

Get the 7-11 and if you can wait til Ampol’s 6-monthly in-store 5% Ampol Cash GC (presumably will come back around April), you’ll stack it to ~14.5% discount.

    • Can you use a gift card to buy gift cards?

      • Infinity money cheat unlocked 🎉 🤑

        • It is not infiinite because you can't buy AmpolCash GC with AmpolCash GC

      • The 7-11 VISA acts as a prepaid card once loaded onto your wallet, which you can then use to tap and pay the Ampol Cash GC at Ampol Foodary.

    • May I ask how is the 14.5% calculated?

      • You may and actually I was wrong because I forgot to count the base 2%.
So [100-(2%+10%)-5%] = 16.4% if my maths correct.

        • Does the 10% refers to the $5 cash back?

  • +1

How does one use the 7-11 gift card at a petrol station? Type in the card number into the EFTPOS machine? I don't see any way to add this into Google Wallet from the CR app…

    • +5

Add the card no. to Google Wallet like a normal credit card.

      • Ah ok thx

      • Then do I just touch the eftpos while open this card?

It has a bar code which didn't work for me

        • +1

Barcode? 7-Eleven digital gift cards do not come with a barcode and they cannot be redeemed using a barcode.

7-Eleven digital gift cards are prepaid Visa gift cards, so you need to add them to Google Wallet as a payment card, not as a gift card. That is the reason the commenter you replied to said to add them to Google Wallet like a normal credit card.

          • @WookieMonster: Maybe they added to Klarna App, does it not work through there? Handy if you want to keep track of balance

          • @WookieMonster: Successfully add 7-11 card to google wallet, but when trying to use it ask to verify card info security code. Pin from card email does not. Any help? TIA

            • @a1234my: $5 headache..
              Hope you sort it out.

            • +1

@a1234my: Are you getting the following message in Google Wallet for your gift card?

Verify your card info to make sure that you can use this card everywhere online

If so, you only need to verify your gift card if you want to use it via Google Wallet on a website or app (hence the reference to online in the message). If you are only wanting to use the gift card in-store via Google Wallet, you can ignore this message and tap and pay in-store.

              • @WookieMonster: This message is on Google wallet

@a1234my: Yeah. That's the normal wallet security check. I get that with all my cards. It requires my finger/pin to unlock.

                    • +2

@a1234my: You are seeing two different verification prompts on Google Wallet.

                      • If you see this one, my previous comment applies. This prompt is the same as the one you saw here. In other words, if you ignore this prompt, you can still use the gift card in-store via Google Wallet, but not online nor in an app.

                      • If you see this one, you must verify it is you before you are able to use the gift card in-store via Google Wallet, and that only requires your biometrics/PIN. (As an aside, I do not understand the reason Google Wallet does not ask for verification every time you attempt to use a payment card stored on Google Wallet. Apple Pay and Samsung Wallet do this…)

                • @a1234my: Ignore it ?
                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15590965/redir

                    many thanks.

              • @ab c: Thanks. I remember it said this can be use anywhere that has an eftpos? Does it mean I can use it at woolies for grocery??

                • @TheWetArmpit: Depends on merchant code… Wookie can probably confirm or deny which applies

    • Took me 4 attempts over 2 days to add to my Google wallet. Frustrating.

    • Lol sounds like the hardest $5 earnt ever!

      • Yes. When it works, it's straightforward. When it doesn't, it's very frustraighting.

  • Can I use any of these to buy GCs at their respective locations? No car so don't need to buy fuel.

      • I meant buying other gift cards since these some of these are Visa prepaid cards ultimately. Getting a Coles/Woolies GC for ~12% off would be nice.

        • Don't know when you can ever buy a gift card with a gift card for these cashback promotions but not a bad idea I guess.

To get the $5 you only need to buy the $50 7-eleven gift card it seems, not spend it straight away?

          Selected Gift Cards:
          7-Eleven Gift Card
          AmpolCash Gift Card
          BP Gift Card
Cashrewards Fuel & Auto Gift Card
          Shell Gift Card

Yes, Shell can be used to buy Coles Myer GCs

  • So the 7/11 would work.st Ampol? That's so interesting

  • Would save more than $5 waiting to fill up in the low part of the cycle as well (not a good time now).

    • +5

Perfect, I'll wait for the low cycle and then use the gift card

    • It's the low part of the cycle in Sydney and Adelaide. Perth is low every Tuesday

I tried to test with shell gift card $50 from my Apple Pay to buy coles & myer gift card $50 at reddy express ( NSW ) ( new pos system) and it work, so shell gift card can buy coles & myer in store ( if they available to sale in store ) and shop at coles or myer this is a good option who shop at coles often. Good deal for me!

I also test this coles & myer gift card to buy another coles & myer and shell gift cards again, unfortunately it block both gift card from new pos system at reddy express, so it allows me one time from Apple Pay transfer to gift card. Just sharing what I've been doing with these cash rewards $5cb with $50 purchase.
I buy either shell or 7/11 GC whichever has the highest CB, in this case same/same - so either or for this one. Go to shell - buy a Coles GC. So then essentially I'm getting 12% off a $50 Coles grocery shop.

It's minor in the scheme of things, but I love the feeling of getting something back when the supermarket giants are ripping us off so brutally.

    • You can just use Woolworths Everyday Extra for 10% and use a gift card for 12.7%+ for whatever value you want.

      • You can buy gift cards with the monthly 10% off?

        • No. You use the monthly 10% off and then pay with discounted GC

          • @foxes28: You mean this?

Enjoy 10% off every month on one shop at Woolworths and one shop at BIG W in-store or online, 2x points on every shop and more.* $7/month or $70/year, cancel anytime

            • @G-rig: Yep but I believe most ppl here paid $35/year for Everyday Extra
