Hmmm is the westfield EFTPOS worthwhile considering the fee?

    • +3

      Taken from the FreePoints page.

For each $100 Westfield Eftpos card you buy, you’ll essentially be paying $5.95 (the card purchase fee) to earn either $10 worth of Everyday Rewards Dollars or 1,000 Qantas points. At under 0.6 cents per point, that’s a cheap way of boosting your Qantas Frequent Flyer balance.

      • can we use these like eftpos at the post office to pay the rates ?

        • Following

      • you need 2000 points to get $10 not 1000 points for 1000 points you get zilch, zero nada nothing.

        • +1

2000 everyday rewards points ($10) is worth 1000 qantas points

    • +1

depends on the person buying think if it is worth it or not

      $95.95 for $100 or 4.05% off

      • +1

Linda Evangelista says "I won't get out of bed for less than $10,000"

OzBargainers say "I won't get out of bed for less than $4.05"

        • haha

        • +1

But we’re not Linda Evangelista that point is moot.

      • Yeah but it's not exactly 4.05% off because it's woolworths reward points. I don't spend much at woolies and you can often get > % off wish or woolies cards.

Plus the EFTPOS card is a minor hassle.

I'm not getting out of bed for this.

        • I was trying to dumb it down

point worth has always been a debate

          • @Poor Ass: Are you saying I'm dumb?

            • +1

@Bdawg: obviously not because you know about it dawg

Can the Westfield eftpos be used at ANY (not just inside Westfield) Woolies or Coles to purchase TCN or Ultimate gift cards?

    • -2

Pretty sure the answer is no.

      • -2

        Incorrect.

    • +1

They work just like an EFTPOS card inside and outside of Westfield. Coles and Woolies have blocked these from buying other gift cards, however it might work for buying closed loop cards.

      • can it be used at Coles and Woolies outside of Westfields as well?

the description says "redeemed nearly anywhere, and not just Westfields"

        • +2

It can be used at any shop that accepts EFTPOS.

          • +6

@JIMB0: It can only be used at any shop that accepts eftpos and chooses to accept them.

            • A number of months ago, I tried to use this in-store at Officeworks to pay for a stick of glue, but as soon as I swiped the card on the EFTPOS terminal, I triggered a Declined - Card Not Accepted error.

            • I tried to use this yesterday at a merchant using a Square EFTPOS terminal, but I got an error message on the terminal, saying my card was not accepted. It is hardly surprising, considering the Square website says it does not accept eftpos if you swipe the card.

            • @WookieMonster: Thanks for the info.
So the Westfield EFTPOS needs to be inserted rather than swiped. Correct?

              • @gembel: usually swiped but some machines can insert but not the chip reader

e.g. I recently used it to top up my translink card at an kiosk which was an insert and pull out and it worked

              • @gembel: You cannot insert a Westfield eftpos gift card nor add it to a mobile wallet. The only way you can redeem it is by swiping.

Most EFTPOS providers will happily process eftpos payments from this gift card if you swipe the card, it is just that Square is an outlier.

            • +3

@WookieMonster: There is no chip so it's swipe only, I think?

From the Square webiste: Please note that eftpos cards without a chip aren’t accepted on Square. This means the older ‘swipe only’ eftpos cards cannot be accepted.
Chip credit and debit cards are inherently more secure than magstripe or ‘swipe only’ cards - this is why magstripe-only cards (cards without a chip) are being phased out in Australia.

@WookieMonster: I reckon is because OW sells the Westfield GC and pretty much run a block on all the GCs they sell as payment

            • @WookieMonster: Can you help jog my memory: After swiping, do I choose "Credit" or "Savings", or either is fine?

I tend to use these Westfield EFTPOS cards at Aldi and Asian grocers to get a small discount that I wouldn't otherwise get.

              • +1

                @dlee:

Can you help jog my memory: After swiping, do I choose "Credit" or "Savings", or either is fine?

You need to select Savings, as that is what it says on the back of the Westfield eftpos gift card.

If you select Savings, you will route the payment through the eftpos network (which is the only network supported on this gift card). If you select Credit, you will route the payment through a credit network, but the issue is that Westfield eftpos gift cards do not support any credit networks (e.g. Visa, Mastercard, AMEX), which would mean that the payment would be declined.

I tend to use these Westfield EFTPOS cards at Aldi and Asian grocers to get a small discount that I wouldn't otherwise get.

                Fair enough!

For grocers and independent supermarkets, I tend to use Category Choice Groceries gift cards (which I can purchase at a 3% discount through my health insurance), but Westfield eftpos gift cards are pretty good too. If I had a ShopBack account, I would probably also use ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift cards…

                • +1

@WookieMonster: If I may ask, how come you don't have a ShopBack account, which is free?

                  • @aaron3: His ID won't be harvested (by hacker).

                  • +3

                    @aaron3: A few reasons:

                    • When I was tossing up between ShopBack and Cashrewards, the ShopBack data leak happened. The lacklustre response from ShopBack put me off.

                    • I have other ways to access discounted gift cards and cashback (e.g. HCF Thank You, Reward Gateway). For example, I can currently buy Category Choice Groceries gift cards at 4% off through an HCF EOFY sale. Yes, I miss out on bonus cashback offers from ShopBack (e.g. the $3 bonus with $30 spend yesterday), but am I really missing out on much?

                    • I tried to help (the old) GYB a couple of years ago by pointing inconsistencies and strange terms I spotted on a number of merchant pages on ShopBack. Instead of thanking me for my feedback or passing it on, they dismissed my feedback and told me that if any of my cashback did not track or was declined incorrectly, they told me to let them know and they would see whether anything could be done to help me. On the other hand, I gave similar feedback to TA on inconsistencies I saw on Cashrewards, and they thanked me and asked me to pass on any more that I saw!

                    • +1

@WookieMonster: Shopback tracks most times but sometimes don't and got hacked but no class action. Customer service stinks that I can agree on.

But if your purchase something and then it doesn't track until you follow up and then they do something about it. You pretty much are asking them to give you customer service.

                    • @WookieMonster: Can you use Category Choice Groceries to buy Café Choice in WWS?

                      • +1

@jimwh: I would say yes, because:

                        • Woolworths cannot distinguish between Category Choice Groceries and ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift cards, so they are both treated as the same gift card.

                        • Someone yesterday used a ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card to pay for a Café Choice gift card.

    • +1

It should be fine, as long as staff let you do that.

However, I would expect you would trigger an Items Not Allowed error at Woolworths if you try to use a Westfield eftpos gift card to pay for any of the following gift cards:

      • TCN eftpos gift card (i.e. the open-loop version)
      • Vanilla Mastercard gift card
      • Vanilla Visa gift card
      • Any gift cards issued by Woolworths Group (e.g. Woolworths Supermarkets, WISH, Essentials)
      • eBay gift card
      • +4

Worked fine at Aldi, and no surcharge because it is an eftpos card.

      • Has Woolies also block Supermarket gc from buying the Westfield ones?

        • +1

My guess is yes, but I do not recall receiving any recent reports on this.

          • +4

@WookieMonster: Bought a Westfield card and Cafe Choice card in a single transaction this morning, using split payment and staffed checkout. The Special.com.au Woolworths card worked. The HCF Grocery Choice and Shopback Supermarket cards both said Item Not Allowed. After seeing above comments I suspect the Westfield card was the problem as I've bought the Cafe Choice using those payment methods before.

            • +1

              @tbone74:

I suspect the Westfield card was the problem

Yes. I bought $500 Cafe choice with a mix of Special Woolworths & Shopback Supermarket visa successfully this morning.

            • @tbone74:

The HCF Grocery Choice and Shopback Supermarket cards both said Item Not Allowed. After seeing above comments I suspect the Westfield card was the problem

              unlike at Coles :(

            • @tbone74: @hamza23 so would u say if I have $100/$150/$150(total $400) separate Woolies Special GC, I can potentially buy a single $400 Cafe GC via manned checkout with 3 split payments? I gonny try it either way tmr evening. TIA for response 🙏

              • @noelhoi: yes - though i prefer self-serve :)

              • @noelhoi: Yes but I've only done it on self serve, easier to do it yourself.

                • @hamza23: Ah, ofc I prefer self-serve when possible. I just assumed it’s only splittable via manned checkout based on tbone’s comment. Even better then :)

    • Yes.

    • Yes. The Westfield eftpos is a "normal" eftpos prepaid card.
100% doesn't matter whether its in a Westfield or not.

Only catch is it is a "pre-paid" card and some places don't like pre-paid cards (such as some places put restrictions on paying bills or buying giftcards with them).

    • yes you can

  • $95.95 for $100 or 4.05% off for the Westfield GC

  • Finally VARIABLE Café Choice is included! 🙌🏼

    • Are these similar to restaurant choice gift cards? Looking at the categories seems even better

      • +1

        same

      • +2

Café Choice gift cards are functionally identical to Restaurant Choice gift cards. Both gift cards permit the same MCCs. The only differences are the branding, and the barcode identifier assigned to them.

        • Didn't know restaurant choice was able to be used at motels and so on

        • Would they work as a payment source for Uber Eats?

          • +1

@value hunter: Blackhawk Network should allow Uber Eats, as that should use a permitted MCC (5812).

Whether Uber Eats accepts prepaid Visa gift cards as a payment method is another question, but my guess is that Uber Eats would accept them.

        • just thinking ahead, when we get to the last few dollars of the gift card balance, is it easy enough to use? i.e. do most restaurants/cafes accept split payments using the remaining balance on the gift card and then another card or is this uncommon?

      • +1

        Yes, basically the same.

    • Do you think those cards can be used at SushiHub?

      • +1

I used the restaurant choice one at sushi hub before so should be fine.

        • Thanks! I guess I should do the variable cafe instead of westfield then to net more savings 🤤
          20% off best sushi here i come~

  • Can the Westfield GC Eftpos be used for ATO bills paid through an Auspost outlet?

      • +1

that is incorrect… it's not part of the retailer that accept them. I guess they blocked it because you wouldn't really be doing much retailing at the post office and secondly post office sells these cards so sometimes they block them from use if they sell them

      • +1

Dude - if you have no clue, stop giving ozb members with incorrect information !!! Two times now in one week.

        • -5

Sorry I mean I know how to do it so it’s very possible . Like I also know how to redeem my rewards for gift cards. It’s not common knowledge but if you ask the question then I will answer it lol

    • that's a negative because I tried and didn't work

      • good stuff didn't know they advertised

  • +3

Ok - the cafe choice one is hilarious.

The Cafe Choice Gift Card can be used at the following merchant category locations: ………and Fortune Tellers (7996).

    • Maybe some fortune tellers offer coffees on the side also 😂

  • -1

I'm glad I only bought one $500 gift card for the vanilla master card X10 points deal lol

    • These are still good to buy WW gift cards at 3% on the app.

    • +1

      buy more prepay ya bills

      • I use B2Bpay for bills

        • what's discounts do you get from those?

          • @Poor Ass: No discount, just using it for paying bills with credit card to rack up points / meet min spend targets.

            • @donman92: so why don't you rack up points buying the vanilla as well as earn some woolies points and also use the vanilla to pay the bills?

              • @Poor Ass: I did since I bought the vanilla card with my CC. But vanilla card doesn't seem to work for online tmk.

                • +1

@donman92: works for rates, water, body corp, electricity, gas, shopback for me

  • Anyone know if Cafe Choice can be used to pay for hotels given the MCC 7011 appears to be the only code used by hotels? At least according to the list here; https://docs.stripe.com/issuing/categories

I've never used one of these before, but I'm guessing it should be able to be used at most restaurants too which makes it very useful?

    • Sometimes you need to use a different register. If it’s a hotel see if you can pay at the cafe or restaurant and it may accept the card. I have to do this at the kids play centre. The front entry declines, the cafe accepts. On the receipt the business names are slightly different.

    • Yes it can be used at Hotels as it allows MCC 7011 in the list. Note you likely need to pay it in person or over the phone. It won't work at booking websites (but maybe directly on the hotel's website). And no you don't need to pay it at special registers/restaurants at the hotel, it should just work as other people have had success with the restaurant choice card (effectively same card).

  • so I’ll use this weeks vanilla cards to buy these for more savings?

    • nah just use it up

      not worth the stacking

    • Given the extremely limited card numbers and expiry combo, I would avoid holding onto these cards for more than a day.

  • So I’m planning to get the Woolworths Special GC from this deal, then if I get the Westfield EFTPOS, it’d be 14.05% off face value or thereabouts.

    • have you actually tried? AFAIK you can't use GCs to buy GCs at woolies

      • No i havent used any Woolworths Special GC at all, my first ever still in my Wallet unused; but they should be acting as prepaid VISA/MC. Someone bought Wish GC with it earlier and worked

      • I've had success using Special Woolworths GC to buy other GCs at Woolies, similar to the Shopback one.
But it likely won't work buying open loop gift cards as stated above
