Let me know if my math is right. I'm not buying so don't know if there's any GST shenanigans at checkout.

    • +2

Your math seems right, but not Aliexpress's.

I ordered. US $14.88 for the unit, but tax of US $2.49 (17% ??). Total of US $17.37. Still bargain worthy.

      • +1

It's a known issue. Happens on special deals, one theory is that the GST is calculated from the regular price.

        • Once you place an order, you should be able to see the details by downloading the invoice. No theory required.

        • +1

I gave up on the AliExpress legal team who kept arguing GST is required when that's not the issue. It was all about saving face and didn't want to admit fault.

  • +1

Cant believe bought 27 and yet got beaten here

  • +1

bought one of these a couple of weeks ago - great little unit for the price. Just create a copy of the SD first

  • +18

    Mandatory advises:
    do not buy bigger sdcard.
    Change the sd card asap
Do not ask where to get the games, google is your best friend.
64gb is plenty for the games, 128gb sure better

    • +3

Do you mean "do not buy bigger sdcard" … from the Aliexpress store or do you mean don't get a replacement one that's bigger than 64GB?

      • +3

I mean do not buy 128gb model on this listing doesnt matter aud3 more. Im happy to pay aud7 less for just the device no card (if possible)

      • +10

Replace the SD card with one of a reputable brand. The one that is included and the one that you get if you pay for the larger card WILL FAIL.

    • does bluetooth controller work on these

      • +1

no wifi or BT without USB-C adapter to a dongle. Used it for wifi to scrape thumbnails and it worked, have not tried BT controller but it should work - as long as you dont need it to stand upright with the dongle in it..

    • I'd also add: if you're only interested in systems that used cartridges, you could save yourself more money and just get a card that's 32GB (or less, if you can still get them)

    • You list should include, which I don't have answers for

      1) where to get the Arkos and files to replace the original Sdcard that it comes with a smaller sdcard as replacement

      2) how to clone or back up the sdcard that it comes with

      3) compatibility list of sdcard that works with r36s

      4) how to quit a game all I know is select and start x2

  • what the heck can they make this thing next to nothing? i just received mine for around $30aud from last deal and thought it was absolutely bargain but holy shit at this price its insane for what you get

    • +2

What games do you play on it?
I'm tempted at this price, but not sure when I'd really play it outside of commuting to work or on the plane.

      • im mostly on the PSX and arcade library which is where it could handle up to comfortably, i havent even start on the Portmaster side yet but im keen to get into that when i get some time, you could play up to PSP games if you have the right settings and emulators and also manage expectations, everything below is MOSTLY played comfortable, however N64/DC can also get stuttery game dependent, there's also several CFW that makes difference, and big community scene of this device that alone takes lot of time to explore and tinker, one plus for this thing has is big community support and mods

        • Or, keep it simple. Sega nes snes thats like thousand games already

          • +2

@CyberMurning: Don't forget Neo Geo. Some great games on that one!

    • Its new user so aliexpress subsidised

      • +1

Hardly anyone on this site would be a new user….?

        • "new" user

        • +3

I have many children…. and i can make more aytime…

  • +1

it took me like a week to get my head around the community cfw and how the system worked, basically the community made Arkos firmware is overall the best, there are alot of settings within that is WAY beyond the price point of this device

    • How to replace the sdcard with community firmware that works the same? With a smaller sdcard that is

  • Link to setup that you find easiest?
    @balls

    • +9

      https://retrohandheldguides.com/r36s-custom-firmware/

This is a very good beginner guide though there's quite few out there

honestly at this price it's almost throw away, if tinkering aint your thing or no time the device plays mostly fine out of the box, even if you use the stock SD card that came with it and it breaks, you could just flash one of the cfw to a new sd card without any harm to the device abit you lose your saves

      • -1

I don't even know how to save games. What's the menus or keys for that?

        • +2

Have you tried reading the arkos wiki?

  • Showing as 57$ to me now

    • +2

      New user bro

      • oh sorry i missed that part. thanks for pointing out ;)

        • +4

          Ozb rules:
Read then buy first think later lol

      • Any idea how/if they check for genuine new users? ie. can we use different email, same phone and address?

        • +1

Not sure. And there are some post on reddit about aliexpress is banning one user with multiple accounts. Take the risk if you cant afford $30 more

        • +2

i just ordered one from a new account. lets see

          • @XedeX: Let us know how you go

          • @XedeX: did you use the gmail trick to get a new one? I tried adding . in between letter, or a +1ali at the end, but get an incorrect email error

            • @pichxlonco: I just used another email address to signup a new aliexpress account.

          • @XedeX: Yeah I ordered as well, using different name, email and phone to old account, same address. See how we go I guess!

            • @djkelly69: If they check the address to determine duplicate accounts, could you use an AusPost parcel locker instead of your home address? Or will they not deliver to those?

              • @AngusD: Not sure on a parcel locker, but says it has been shipped now so seems ok so far.

              • +1

                @AngusD:

could you use an AusPost parcel locker

If your area uses Fast Horse don't enter a AusPost locker address. There's been cases of it being sent back to the sender or even just left on top of the Parcel Locker for anyone to take.

      • How to get the new user?

I tried a few weeks ago (new email, etc), and it came up with an error - support was useless and I just gave up.

  • +3

Keep in mind that the 4-way d-pad is very clicky and difficult to play Street Fighter 2 on.

    • +1

      clicky? u sure you have a r36s?

  • +8

    This or Steam Deck? /s

    • -7

i think there's nothing to compare between the two. Maybe choose something more similar like Steamdeck vs ROG Ally?

      • +7

        Ai bot missed the humour.

    • +3

      Steamdeck 100%.

Some people say it's not pocketable like this but those people just need bigger pockets.

    • No, switch 2 bro

    • +1

Steam Deck is about 40x more expensive than this deal. You could strap 40 of these together and it would still probably be more pocketable than a Steam Deck :P

  • -1
    • +5

      No way. Old CPU.

      You want RG35XXH, RG40XXV, RG40XXH, RG35XXSP, RG35XX Plus, RG35XX 2024 or RG Cube XX.

      Then you cna run muOS.

      • What’s the best if money isn’t a concern? Like best quality best screen etc. and how does it compare to the one in this deal post

        • +1

They all have the same chipset so all perform the same. Each has advantages and disadvantages - whatch RetroGameCorp reviews.

Compared to this deal post, all of them are better. This deal's device is cheap knock off of an old RG351.

        • Sticking with the Gameboy aesthetic (i.e. no horizontal models that look like PSP, WiiU, etc.)

          • RG35XX Plus if just want closest to GB look
          • RG40XXV if want a thumb stick and bigger screen

Although we're really getting way above the $27 price point

          Cheaper on AliExpress than Amazon

          • +1

@abowen: Thanks, yeah interested in the GBA form factor and not the horizontal ones.

Looks like nothing is better than the RG40XXV at the moment? Will probably look at that

            • @evasive: https://youtu.be/4_zMdyCjKu4?si=8OE0jSafi8ssjEAi&t=1046

              Literally just came out yesterday

RG40XXV and RG Cube XX are top two

              Ordering the RG40XXV now

              • @abowen: Where you buying from
                ?

                • @evasive: Official website
                  https://anbernic.com/en-au/products/rg-40xxv?variant=4553017…

They have an official AliExpress site too

I've seen them on Amazon with next day delivery but a different store is selling it

My intention is to start with this for 2D games

If end up using it a lot, will buy a more expensive horizontal one like Retroid Pocket 5 or similar with performance to run PS2 games

                  • @abowen: PSA: this is $82 USD, so about $120 AUD. Apples and oranges.

                    • @gizmomelb: You missed the comment by @evasive

"What’s the best if money isn’t a concern?"

So yes, we were happy discussing oranges to OP's apple

                      • +1

@abowen: @abowen - my apologies, yes I missed it. Ambernic RG406V will handle PS2 and gamecube and is $180 USD (about $270 AUD) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HT3I88kVEA

though the 'best' would be something like a steamdeck or other larger handheld portable PC.

                        • @gizmomelb: All good

Thank you for the links. Yep, it's damn hard to also limit yourself with "money isn't a concern" because it still kind of is :P

I went down the rabbit hole and was like

                          • RG406V can do PS2, thats perfect
                          • Retroid Pocket 4 can do that AND has better ergonomic, that's perfect
                          • GPD WIN 4 can do that AND has OcuLink, that's perfect
                          • Ayaneo Flip DS can do that AND has split screen for DS, that's perfect

                          All of a sudden it's $1500….

Then I reminded myself I've got a laptop with 3070 GPU that does great at upscaling PS2 games, works with Xbox controllers, so don't need to double up there…

    • No Feedback, no thanks.

    • Only reason to get that specific Anbernic RG35XX model is for GarlicOS (which is pretty outdated now).

At the rate that Anbernic releases devices, you might as well get one of the newer XX models and install muOS or Knulli.

  • +1

This is such an awesome device have 1000s of games on it. Upgraded SD. Copy the entire SD card onto a new SD and you will have so much fun. Bargain.

    • Thx

  • Can someone confirm if this device struggles with PSP / PS2 games?

    • +4

      Struggles badly with P2P.

      Flat out doesn't run PS2.

    • Plays a lot of PSP games well, but definitely not worth buying for PSP alone, it's more of a bonus that it can play as many games as it can as well as it does

    • for PS get PS consoles ie PSP or PS Vita period

    • Runs DC but not PS2, psp is hit and Miss but playable

    • just get a ps vita

  • Is this mostly for portable nintendo games 3DS and below?

    • It won't run 3DS games.

  • Sorry dumb question and all but what does this run out of the box? And if I want to get new games, how would I go on about it? I do apologise for not being a particularly techy person

    • what does this run out of the box? retro games.
And if I want to get new games, how would I go on about it? we cant tell you.

      • Haha fair enough lmao! What games can it run?

        • +4

  • -5

i just get $57 no the mentioned value

  • I really didn't need another one of these, but 26 bucks (got the red one this time), how can you go wrong?

I'll legit leave it in the glove box for when I have 5 minutes here and there.

    • +4

I'll legit leave it in the glove box

      Yikes. Battery go boom.

      • +5

        I didn't consider that.

Oh well, 27 is cheap enough to buy a new one, and I have car insurance for the first time in my life on this one so maybe it blows up the whole thing and I get a new model.*

*The views and opinions expressed in this comment do not necessarily represent Dylan and are not permissable in a court of law

  • oh welcome deal, so existing accounts dont quality rip

    • took less than a minute to make a new one for me though soooooo

      • fair play i was being lazy, signed up with phone number this time

  • +2

This price is madness. Someone's getting one for Christmas - they better appreciate my curation

  • is the 128 version just bigger provided sd card or is it 128 internal storage?

    • +1

      128gb no-name card iirc

    • +3

It's a bigger SD card but as others have noted they're trash and will fail. Grab one from amazon or officeworks or somewhere you know isn't selling fakes

      • people dont read my comments :(

  • Im awaiting the RG35xx (non plus model) to go on sale again for around $50 need it for a xmas present..

    • +3

Note: there's two variant of the RG35XX:

      • Old RG35XX - Cortex A9 Chipset - compatible with GarlicOS
      • New RG35XX - Allwinner H700 Chipset - compatible with muOS/Knulli

There's also a bunch of new XX devices by Anbernic in various form factors.

      • Cheers, i am aware of that, iv already got the older Cortex A9 Model (installed GarlicOS on it)

They have so many models, i even considered the Plus model for Wifi/BT but then once you go to that level where do you stop
