Dick Smith Jumbo LED Display Clock Radio $14.98 [w/ FREE POSTAGE TIL 12AM] (40% OFF)

170

Gday,

Wanted to post this last night but theres a silly cooling off period :S..

Im not sure when the deal started or when it ends..

The story goes, I was looking for an alarm clock (maybe for a month or so on ebay etc), and for just a 'reasonable' one it was about $10-$15, for a 'decent' or even a 'huge/jumbo' one it was more like $20-30+, but just randomly I found this really nice one @ dickies for only $14.98 and it gave me a FREE postage discount during checkout.

I just ordered with paypal and it had the free postage which was a nice bonus since the clock is already 40% off the normal price. I do know these clocks are nice since my grandma with poor sight has one, there nice and easy to read across the room and 2 alarm settings seems nice (havent used the alarm myself though)..

Anyways here is the deal…

edit: I THINK FREE POSTAGE IS ONLY TIL 12AM TONIGHT DUE TO "FREE DELIVERY WEEKEND", NOT 100% SURE IT APPLIES TO ALL STATES BUT IT SAYS FREE DELIVERY ON THE DICKIES HOMEPAGE FOR ME IM IN NSW..

  • It tries to charge me $4.95 for postage to Perth, even with payment via PayPal. But my local store has stock so I'll pick one up tomorrow. AM radio is a plus, many just offer FM these days.

  • Thats weird, I realize now why it is free delivery its because of 'free delivery weekend'

If I go to the homepage.. "http://dicksmith.com.au" it says free delivery near the top left under "dick smiths' and the catogries boxes.
Does it show the same for you there the free delivery weekend with the little van logo?

It did say it was going to charge me the delivery fee until I actuall went through with the sale and then it discounted it, I think because of the "weekend" deal which obviously finishes tonight at 12am..

    Hope this helps =)

edit:By the way my local store ~10mins drive away does also have stock but delivery sure beats the chrissy rush especially if its for free.

  • +1

thanks op i have also been looking for a time postage is removed at the final stage of checkout prior to payment

    • postage is removed at the final stage of checkout prior to payment

yup was removed at the last payment screen, thanks

      Item subtotal $14.98
      Delivery $4.95
      Shipping discount -$4.95

      Total $14.98

  • Good deal.
(The geek in me wishes this had an ethernet/wireless option to auto set the time and keep it in sync :) )

Mains frequency is pretty reliable for time keeping except when you have a DST change and power failures of course.

PS: Lots of stores have stock so you still pickup free after the weekend and you can avoid or don't mind the shopper crowds. Sometimes I think that's better than another trip to the PO because the lazy postie carded the package. Or you have a work address that will receive personal goods.

    Nice find.
Will this leave an imprint on your face if you have it on your bedside table?

  • The reviewer mentioned there is a dimmer switch, which is a plus for me. Though they also say the numbers are yellow - looks green to me, unless one of us is colour blind?

    • +1

I think it's the reviewer. It looks green to me too.

    Good price.
    More specs are shown here.

Says 1.8" digit, which is big,
and battery DC9V backup, which is good, if included.
Digits definitely looks green in brochure too.

    • The one Ive looked at certainly looked green not yellow.

Nice find with the brochure, I wish dickies had the other one's as well the blue one looks like the numbers are actually 'fatter' but maybe its just the photo/angle.

  • Thanks for the deal, looking for one with a red LCD though. Green seems to annoy me during the night.

    • I own this red one:

The numbers are approx 32mm tall versus approx 46mm for the Dick Smith one, but still bigger than average.. I have the dimmer turned on and it works well for me. Buttons are well placed. Only has 24 hr time mode. Also has the 9v back up battery option.

That website seems to sell them for $10 but I've never heard of them before, pretty sure I got mine at Target, Kmart or somewhere similar a couple years ago.

  • Thanks a lot. I needed one (more) for quite a while.

After seeing this tread, I went to a local DSE store since I am also looking for a good, visible clock for the bedroom. I did find there are plenty of stocks left in store. However, the display unit is not very encouraging. The LED light is quite dim, even when the light intensity dial is all the way to the max. Even if the brightness of this unit is not indicative of all of the stock, I can tell the quality of the clock is not that pleasing, parts feel loose everywhere. So, I ended up not buying. For those who have ordered, just a heads up here. Sorry to say: don't expect too much.

    • +1

But maybe dim is a good thing at night?

  • Well, I can only speak of the display unit at the DSE store. I doubt every unit will be like this. If they are, then DSE is selling these cheap for a good reason. When I turned the dial to min dimness, it was almost totally unreadable under the store lighting. The brightest setting was barely visible. At night time, dimness maxed, without other source of light, maybe it is ok.

  • I cant comment on the build quality I must admit I never actually 'played' with the clock just looked at it.

I personally find the red clocks annoying and too bright at night I much prefer the green ones (of course this is just my personal preference)

In regards to the brightness, I didnt think it was too bright (wont burn your face at night) nor did I think it was too dim when I saw it inside, of course if your house or room is flooded with sunlight, or has 50x fluros like dick smiths does then it would probably be much harder to read but in the room I saw it in which only has a few lights it was great..

Maybe this is something to consider though depending on where you are positioning it (near a window etc) since it might make it harder to read at certain times like morning/arvo when its very bright with sun in the windows.. However I still think its a great price I doubt you would find a 'better' clock for the same price, not especially one with such a big display..

    • You are right. With this price, I am being too picky!

  • Looked at it in a shop. Poor quality. Display model had bottom bit of the number not lit up!

  • can this clock use batteries?

    • Its up to you, right now I personally dont want to say yes or no, or to push it either way since others have since reported finding bad things with the clock and I personally havent gotten my one yet.. I will certainly report back here today when my one arrives (apparently dispatched 6hrs ago and tracking says overnight delivery) hopefully the deal is still good later on, and I really hope my clock works well and quality is good since its actually supposed to be a small santa gift for the better half, and is destined to live in our bedroom.

After reading the negative things about it, yesterday I went to check out granmas one again, more closely this time, and it itself works perfectly, the display was excellent and uniform to read and the dimmer also worked perfectly, at full brightness it was quite easy to read from a distance and was certainly not too dim to read with only the one or two inside lights.

She has it right next to her head when she sleeps, with the dimmer down low, certainly no noticable scorching, or burn marks and she is more than happy with it.

I think it only takes a battery for backup when the mains fail not to actually power the clock, just to keep the time.

Well ill report back later with what I think about quality etc.

      • Thanks mate because if it can use batteries ill buy it because my bed is not near a power socket and I'm only using it as a clock

        • Well it cant use batteries the way you want so dont buy this one, maybe get a solar car one or something..

Anyways I got my one today, the build quality is perfectly fine and I dont think the buttons were loose at all or anything like that. The display looks very nice and extremely easy to read inside my place although the low setting might not go quite as low as some might want it to (theres only 2 settings, high/low and low is not really that much dimmer than high).

There was however a slight 'wtf' moment when I opened the outer cardboard postage box and saw the actual clock box appears to have been already opened by someone (the cardboard was already bent at the top near the tab thing) although the clock seemed to be still brand new in the bubble wrap so maybe they just took some paperwork out of it or something im not sure.

This clock is actually branded "DICK SMITH" and has their name in bold on the front so if thats a turn off for anyone dont get it. I also got a black one not silver like the picture although I think its all the same.

Well thats about it from me.. Im very happy, I just now hope it works well for years to come.

All in all though I think its going to be a good addition to my room for 15$ I say its a bargain.

        • fantastic mate - sounds like an absolute ripper - do you have Steam?

        • Yeah mate, I have steam.

        • How do i add you mate - i play lfd2 and saints row 3

  • mine came yesterday, thanks OP well worth the $15 to my door (just not having to deal with xmas shoppers was worth more than $15 imo)

mine is black with greeny/yellowy numbers. quite dim but still able to see them easily in a well lit room, pretty much prefect for my dark bedroom at nite.
