      • funny how the quran got 14 downvotes yet the bible got many upvotes

        • +3

Why do you think that is?

  • +1

I want to read it out of curiosity, am I at risk of being converted ? 🤔

    • See what happens during the miracles.

    • +5

An honest reading of the bible is more likely to deconvert a Christian than to convert a non believer.

    • +1

You'll likely be fine. Read the Bible years ago - still not religious.

    • +9

Reading the Bible can make you a Christian. Understanding the Bible will make you an atheist.

      • I’ve been studying the Bible for over 20 years and am no atheist

        • +1

I guess you still fall under my first sentence.

          • @Bruceflix: Or, maybe your statement just isn’t factual

            • @SirFrankGrimes: At some point (hopefully) you'll find that your source material isn't either.

I'm done with this argument. Wars get fought over sky fairy bs.

              Over and out.

        • -1

You wouldn't be still studying it if you've understood it, so yeah, you fall under the first type.

          • @bio: That is such a naive and ignorant comment

Scientists know climate change is real but continue to study its mechanisms and effects

Dieticians know a poor diet is a leading cause of ill health but continue to study what constitutes good nutrition

Educators know that children need a proper education to thrive in society but continue to refine their teaching strategies

Engineers understand intricate building principles but continue to research more economical and resilient building practices

            Etc etc

The goal is not to fully understand something, but to dedicate oneself to lifelong learning and improvement

I think Socrates said it well: "All I know is that I know nothing."

            • +1

              @SirFrankGrimes:

The goal is not to fully understand something

I'm confused. Are you claiming that you understand it, or you don't? You started like you do, but you finished by saying you know nothing.

      • Understanding the bible will make you an omnist

    • Google Ezekiel 23:20 then ponder where you're likely to browse next

    • -3

Conversion only happens for three reasons:
      1. Indoctrination.
      2. Desperation.
      3. You meet a nice girl/boy that is a Christian and then SUDDENLY it all is very convincing to you.
Reading the Bible is not on the list.

      • I am a Christian and don’t fall under any of those three catagories

        • Yea? What is option #4?

          • +1

            @defecat0r:

            1. Deep conviction and faith after rigorous intellectual, relational, moral and rational study / reflection
            • -1

@SirFrankGrimes: Would you permit me some speculation?
You were raised in Church, but you never really felt like a 'true' Christian. A point came in your life in your early 20's where the God-shaped hole in your heart led you to engage in some serious introspection for the first time. You considered seriously for the first time the claims of the faith you were raised in. You read some apologetics books and found the arguments convincing. You gave your life to Christ for what you believe to be the first time.
              Am I Hot? Warm? Cold?

              • +1

                @defecat0r: @defecat0r

Raised in a non-Christian / secular household. Began investigating the claims of Christianity in my teen years, and became a Christian. Have continued to wrestle with my own beliefs, stacking them up against atheism and other religions, and am convicted that God is real and that Jesus really did rise from the dead.

  • Is there a difference between denominations? Shouldnt it say which denomination its for

    • +1

Decent English bible versions, such as the ESV, should just be accurate translations of the original hebrew (old testament) and greek (new testament) biblical texts. There's definitely certain versions out there though that do have small amounts of interpretation bias scattered in, unfortunately. Hence why it's important to choose wisely - ESV is good for being very accurate to the original texts. KJV is a much older yet still quite accurate interpretation that some find more "poetic".

      • I don't care for KJV

But how is ESV compare to NRSV and NASB?

    • Most Christian denominations are happy with the ESV. There isn't so much difference between denominations that they each have a different Bible. There also isn't so much difference between any the popular translations (ESV, NIV, NLT, NASB) that any one of them would be more aligned with any one denomination.

  • -6

The Old Testament is the only part worth reading. The rest is just made up.

    • +5

Wasn't there a talking snake and donkey?

        • +3

No a talking lizard or bird.

When its treachery was found out its legs or wings were removed so it had to wriggle on its belly forever. (Ie it was made a snake after it talked the talk).

You see it makes much more sense now.

Not the importance of this literature.

      • I believe king charlie's full colour printed image went great guns as a deal. Some scurrilous folks mentioned dart boards.

  • Eastern Suburb Version

    • Also heard it referred to as the Engineering Students Version due to its somewhat challenging word order and read aloud nature. Either way, I think it’s a brilliant translation.

  • At worst can this hurt you ? Im agnostic leaning maybe to the annunaki - anyone heard of them ? Time machine be handy .

    • Correct.

    • +3

For good people to do evil - that requires religion.

Its an open question in my mind whether the bible being used to enlighten people on being nice to each other outweighs its propensity to being used to hurt each other in its name.

This bible (all bibles) ought to carry a warning for graphic content.

Here is a nice review of some of that content.

    https://www.donaldwatkins.com/post/is-the-bible-too-graphic-…

Ezekiel 23:20 at least was toned down a bit in ESV using the word ‘issue’ instead of ‘ejaculate’.

Here is a link detailing Ezekiel 23:20 translations across various bible versions; which might be useful in choosing a bible for Sunday school.

I grew up christian. Then became a teenager and thought i was cool because i worked out it wasnt real. Then i got a bit olddr and realised its not just man in the sky and miracles, its a higher standard kf living and a guide for what quite a wild ride, life.

Youll always have the lefties ruining everything and believing in nothing.

    • +4

Imagine thinking there are no left leaning religious people, or that “believing in nothing” is a thing.

    • +3

how's all the stoning and slaving and sodom and gomorrah sort of stuff going for you as you get olddr?

do I understand you correctly… if you don't believe in god you're a lefty? Do you have to believe in any particular god to be a good righty…. or any of the one true gods will do?

      • It’s not left or right.

    • +4

Higher standard of living? Have you read the bloody thing?

Those lefties with their not wanting to ruin the world with climate change, or human rights, or equality. Obviously they need a bit of 7 horseman to really understand how to be good to their fellow human.

      • +2

Sometimes it can be hard to work out whether something is written as satire, or true belief.
Whichever was your tone, it wonderfully reflects how out of place the tone of the old religious writings stuffs is.
Fancy having the right not to be a slave!
Fancy not being able to treat your human possessions as you wish!
Fancy the people of the modern world not wanting to get their daily dose of lead from petrol, not wanting to have air quality like modern beijing's worst day (or industrial revolution manchester or birmingham)!
Fancy not wanting to stone people to death!
Fancy thinking that being able to buy all the types of food easily available, to watch tv, to use the internet, to travel more than a couple of miles, to communicate to others at a distance, to not living or dying at the whim of a "higher being" on the power hierarchy!
Fancy not wanting to ruin land by deforestation, by rising salinity, by industrial accidents that release toxic materials to the land, to see that the massive changes to the face of the earth made by modern industrial man….. fancy all that!

The more I think about it doggsy, the more clearly it becomes obvious that you are being satirical, because no-one that has good mental health and passable morals would wish for any of that stuff!

    • +4

Youll always have the lefties ruining everything and believing in nothing

      Religion is right leaning now?
Crazy then that the largest crazy left v right country in the world currently has the 'right' with a non religious person as their perspective leader.

Perhaps that religious belief isn't giving you that 'higher standard of living' you think

      • +2

I reckon the person that made that comment has wisdom to match the mighty trump

  • +5

Comments are depressing. The world is truly doomed. We have super computers in our pockets, wirelessly connected via satellite and optical cable, to every other pocket computer on the globe, and people still think gods and cherubs are real. We’re so doomed. Sigh. It really is the few dragging the rest of humanity along, then one day the many will drag us all back to the stone age where they belonged all along.

    • +2

Humanity is so amazing isn't it? As a scientist, I am amazed that even with all those things, we still don't have a set of morals and ethics that we all agree on…. or a clear reason and purpose for existence at all…

Personally, as doomed as the world is (I would agree with you there that while there's some good stuff, it is pretty broken) I think faith still has a lot worth wrestling with. I would say this book is worth reading at least once… and I'll be happy to hear your thoughts after you give it a read through. The second half has a good plot twist, but most of us are still waiting eagerly for part III, the return of the King.

      • +2

I’ve read it. I dislike the god of the bible. The Jew’s god is a violent creature. Jesus, “do to other as you want done to you” okay, fine, not original, but ok. I dislike his “obey your master as you would obey me” thing he said to the slave. Not very enlightening at all. Or calling the woman a racial slur (dog). Spoils this whole “hippy” vibe people try to go for. Paul is problematic, didn’t even meet Jesus, comes in afterwards, all churches today follow his word, (the original Christians were an apocalyptic cult - long gone, but the thinking is still part of all Christian thinking today) not just Jesus (are you a Jesus follower or a Paul follower?!), just because his letters were included in the bible (and as Bart Ehrman shows, it’s very problematic vs things Jesus said).

There’s nothing original in the bible or its stories, lots of customs and tales copy from other religions and the Pagans. The Jew’s god was the a copy/stolen from the canaanite’s god of war.

If people just used Jesus as a philosophy of just “be nice” (and not the whole slave owning part etc). Then OK. But when you actually think the stuff is real? And science and society needs to bend a knee to it?! Crazy.

I don’t understand the masses thinking that something needs to be supernatural for it to have meaning or worth holding to. We can do it. Our court system is rules and laws that we are bound too and follow, it’s human laws, no gods needed. I just think needing a deity is very…. Basic, almost animal like, to need gods or spirits what ever, to be a decent human. We need to evolve and be better, and not be driven by ego (god said I’m special!) or emotion (god said this is wrong so I can treat that person like an animal!).

People act like we need “Christianity” in society when it’s the Roman that civilized the west (not Judo-Christian as keeps getting repeated). The East was fine and history is full of forward thinking society’s without the need of a Jewish god (e.g zoroastrianism were anti slavery as it was against the humans rights to make choices). Etc.

This bronze age cult wasted a lot of my life and should not be perpetuated in creating more victims to feed itself. There is no logic in listening to what some primitive bronze age tribal folk thought about the universe long after they're dead. You'll just continue to perpetuate the source of irrational hate against so many different groups for pointless reasons.

Read Harry Potter, it's better fiction and more relatable to modern life.

    • +3

feedback indicates you struck a few tender nerves there. I don't think they'll be using a lighter when their stoning starts.

    • You are angry at yourself for having wasted a lot of your life. That's on you for being weak minded and taking too long to realise what you were doing. Your personal journey and weak mind has no relevance to whether this deal is a bargain or not and is not a reason to down-vote.

      • -2

user name and user outlook check out…small minded that sees no further than the narrow tunnel of "me"
perhaps also believes victims of crime should be sentenced to imprisonment for being too "weak minded".

        • -1

You're assuming things out of your butt due to peoples beliefs.
"Narrow Tunnel" - Look at yourself 😂
"Oh there is no God, why don't people believe like me?!" - Go back to sleep mate

          • +1

@AlteredBeast: I'm not assuming anything…. I read someone's couple of line comment that indicated being indoctrinated (probably at a very early impressionable age) had caused significant life problems for a person…. a tale that regularly happens, more often in what is accepted in modern times as cults.

I saw a reaction by a person that mirrors their user name… a self centred comment that indicates a lack of ability to understand or empathise with others. Calling them weak minded for taking too long to escape their problems.

Their comment doesn't clearly indicate if they are religious minded, but it does clearly demonstrate a psychopathic outlook, commonly consistent with a narcissistic outlook…. suggested by your their name.

No assumptions here doggsy…. unlike your inane comment "Oh there is no God, why don't people believe like me? I didn't mention god in my comment… who's got the tunnel vision doggsy? When the red mist fades from your brain you might be asking yourself "what the hell was I on about?"

      • +1

You are angry at yourself for having wasted a lot of your life

Yes, I literally just said that.

That's on you for being weak minded and taking too long to realise what you were doing.

Yes, the cult got me as a child and I was at 7 day a week church, church school, and church scouts. This whole cult is designed to exploit people at their most vulnerable.

Your personal journey and weak mind has no relevance to whether this deal is a bargain or not and is not a reason to down-vote.

My experience with this cult absolutely, 100% without question, has complete relevance to whether I'll downvote others pushing the cult.

This site should not be somewhere where scams and brutal backwards ways of thinking which hurt people are spread, both the victims of the cult and those they victimize while trying to follow the rules of the idiotic bronze age cult.

    • -2

      "Wasted alot of my life"
Nah mate you did by reading and watching Harry Potter 😂
      Blame your sorry self.

    • +1

Whatever but if people read this book as opposed to the other book, the world would be a far far better place.

    • Bigot, you only feel safe online posting insults like this

      • Bigot is not a magic word to make fair and earned criticism go away, and it's frankly cruel of you to dismiss the voice of the cult's victims like that.

A bigot is somebody who is unreasonable in what they say and criticizes a group without justification.

Cults teaches you to parrot these non-sensical crocodile tear phrases to deflect any criticism or honest discussion.

        • -1

You're definitely a fedora wearing neckbeard redditor

          • @TheCunningLinguist: Do you have a single thing of actual substance to explain your position which isn't just mindless parroted insults and whines?

I'm trying to warn people off a cult which I have extensive experience with, as an ex-member and victim, and all you do is try to shut it down with zero substance which anybody can respond to. Exactly how all cults operate, because there is no good argument for telling ex-members not to warn others.

I like the part where God threatens to wipe poo on your face if you don't give glory to his name.

"If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it. And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. — Malachi 2:2-4"

Weird how He used to talk to all these people back in the day but hasn't said anything in the last 2000+ years.

    • +6

It is absolutely baffling the number of grown adults who cannot recognize that this is fiction, and really low quality very primitive fiction at that, all because it has celebrity status among primitive fiction.

How do people reach adulthood without recognizing that if they lived in a different place or time they'd consider this no more important than any other make believe they reject as obviously fake?

OzBargain is more like ScamBargain today. Next we'll get chiropractors deals and gems which help you communicate with the men on mars.

      • +1

personally I believe chiropractor's arts are effective and beneficial… but I agree with the rest of your comment.

      • It's obviously not all fiction, there's actual history in there (e.g. the Babylonian Exile). But there's also stories that some people take as actual history whilst others have a different opinion. For example if you look at the story of Noah's Ark - is the author of that section claiming it actually happened? Depends who you ask. Some will say it's history, God drowning just about everyone because of their wickedness. On the other hand, some will say it's a story that teaches that disaster is always heading your way and you'll do a lot better if you're prepared. For me, the latter explanation is obviously correct and worth thinking about.

      • -1

I agree that the book is fiction, but the message is important.

Some people don't realise that kindness is kry to survival.

        • +4

You shouldn't need to turn to a book for morals

          • @Loot N Plunder: This is very true. However, for the greater good and betterment of us all, you must try to lift our societys (lowest) common demominator. Sometimes we dont all have access to good households, education and family units.

            • @BusMan247: Sometimes we dont all have access to good households, education and family units.
              That,s gods fault isn't it?

              • @Loot N Plunder: As i mentioned, its a good teaching overall, has some great values and gives purpose to all walks.

Youll get the guys who need to make sure that everyone knows they found a fault, with something, make a fuss to sound smart, so the whole thing doesnt apply.

But we get that there is no man in the sky. But the idea is that we live like there is. Kind of like santa clause making christmas special for kids… theres always the one who thinks there special but saying hes not real, despite the impact.

          • +1

            @Loot N Plunder:

            https://youtu.be/YMnEpOsGH4o?si=uYvRVmSqUHAAmXl5

        • +1

There are much better sources of morality than this incredibly outdated primitive collection of fairy tales, superstitions, and legal structures for a barbaric society.

Anybody who has actually read the bible, and who isn't a cultist blinding themselves, would be horrified by the idea of anybody suggesting that people get their morality from it. A basic children's book has better morality.

          • @CodeExplode: I wiuldnt treat anything as the sole source. I think a wholistic view, your family and friends, other books.. it all helps.

Some kids books are questionable in todays world but definitely agree there are some great books that give rise to some great insights and learnings

            • +1

@BusMan247: The book about god sending a bear to maul some kids for teasing a bald man, or turning a women to salt because she turned back to look at a city he was genociding, demanding somebody prepare to ritually kill their first born then saying lol I just wanted to test if you were devoted to me more than your first born, saying that anybody who is gay or wears clothes made of more than one type of fragment needs to be put to death, with jesus cursing a tree for not having fruit out of season or telling a woman it's her own fault for not believing harder to cure herself, etc, is not 'great insights and learnings' nor a source of even half decent morality which 'all helps', it's outright bad, narcissistic, and cult manipulation.

      ESV version….

3 Behold, I will rebuke your offspring,[a] and spread dung on your faces, the dung of your offerings, and you shall be taken away with it

I like the part where God threatens to wipe poo on your face if you don't give glory to his name.

Not everyone gets poo on their face just the priests who don’t preach properly about his glory.

    • +3

But that can't be because "HE LOVES YOU SO MUCH" /s

      • Yes, but according to the Bible God is also just, and rightly punishes those who fail to obey him

        • +4

Do you find it odd that over 2000 years ago, God used to allegedly talk to people and threaten to rub poo on their faces, and then in modern times he has done…. absolutely nothing?

Like, wouldn't it make more sense for an omnipotent being to intervene in the current Middle Eastern crisis (a region allegedly important to Him), for example, rather than talk about rubbing poo on people's faces over 2000 years ago?

          • @Lurk Hartog: Genuine question. How would you expect / want God to intervene in the Middle East crisis?
