This edition has been rewritten to be easier to read than the original translation. You will enjoy this version if you tried to read the original and found it too much like reading a King James Bible. Great effort was put into making this version pleasing to read while maintaining the essence of the original.

As an added bonus we included a link at the end of the book where you can find the audiobook for FREE.

Weird that the translator's introduction says "If his heart was honest and true, which is the Christian ideal, this is more remarkable because he lacked the faith that makes Christians strong". Sounds like religious propaganda.

      • +1

The translator implies that it's harder to be honest and true without faith, that's why this example is remarkable.

Didn't the Romanz believe in Kratos and Jupiter? Not exactly no faith.

Plus did Kratos learn Stoicism from Aurelius before he ventured to Norseland? I am a little confused on the canonical timelines now.

  • Thanks for sharing. Always wanted to read this but heard it was quite a dry read so $0 is definitely worth the gamble

This could be an abridged version. Another version that is modern and easy to read is the Gregory Hays version, but that version is not free. Being abridged may suit some, but may deter others.

I did a comparison across just a tiny section, and noticed something missing here. A quote I happened to like, at the beginning of Book 2 in the Hays version is: "When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. …". That is missing here.

Also, normally, one can easily find out the background of the translator. For e.g., Gregory Hays, "Associate Professor of Classics. His research centers on late and medieval Latin, as well as on Latin palaeography and manuscript studies. …". With this translator, I could not find anything about his background. Doubt this is AI translated. Also, I am not saying this necessarily means the translation is inferior.

But if you have to choose only one version to read, the above could be enough for some to prefer the Hays version. Then again, this is free … so still good for many others.

So I logged into my Kindle app to find this Hays version and it seems I already have it…
Maybe it was given away for free too once

Yes, you are right. I looked to see if it was listed free before, and indeed it was here.
And guess what? Following that old deal link, the kindle version is still free at the moment : https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CDHM2KRM

        • The Hays version is great, I haven't read this one but I have read the George Long version, and Hays shits all over it

      +1 for hays book
