Simon can only watch, helpless, as his family is killed and his friends captured by enemy Travelers—men and women who can summon mystical powers from otherworldly Territories. To top it off, another young man from Simon's village discovers that he's a savior prophesied to destroy evil and save the realm. Prophecy has nothing to say about Simon. He has no special powers, no magical weapons, and no guarantee that he'll survive. But he sets off anyway, alone, to gain the power he needs to oppose the Travelers and topple their ruthless Overlord. It may not be his destiny, but Simon's determined to rescue his fellow villagers from certain death. Because who cares about prophecy, really?

    I liked the Cradle series.
I really didn't like the Last Horizon series. It was a DNF for me.
    I'll give this a shot.

This is prob closer to LH than cradle.

heard good things about the Cradle series, just started book one! Looking forward to them!

I started reading Cradle thanks to Ozbargain .. it is really good

      • It is very good, there are parts to it that i haven't liked and felt that it detracted from the journey story being told but overall really good.. i'm up to book 10 of 12, looking forward to find it out how it all ends.

The first LH volume was a slow start. It gets better each book in.

Thanks. On book 11of cradle, Reaper. Not bad, getting a bit bored now though

    • I'm on the same book, Reaper is book 10 i thought lol… i know what you mean, for me it has a lot to do with the overarching story of the Abidan which is the bits i don't enjoy whenever they swap to it within the books.

        Feels bolted on doesn't it….

        • Yeh kind of, or at least in some way unnecessary (so far), i'm assuming it ties in to things later on and we need the background for how it all concludes but each time it switches to it, it takes me out of the story being told around Lindon.

I also didn't like how quick he (Lindon) advanced to where he got to, author could have easily extended out the time line to make it a little bit more believable since throughout the whole thing he reiterates how these advancements can take a life time .. lol .. i've decided not to really concentrate on that part of it and just go with the flow.

Might be book 10. So many books read in a few weeks so you're prob right

  • i'm just surprised that some people read these kind of random fantasy fiction books.

I guess harry potter and lord of the rings were random fantasy fictions once upon a time.

Wonder what fantasy fiction novels there are that are actually good, which aren't famous as they haven't been made into hollywoo blockbusters.

There are lots and lots of them which don't become mainstream. :)

      • If you had to recommend one, what would it be?

        • The Name of the Wind is very famous in the fantasy book genre, due to being brilliant but unfinished. It has had the TV film and stage rights sold to Lionsgate and will perhaps one day be incredibly well known. For now we have two of three books in the planned trilogy. The first two books are outstanding, immensely enjoyable reads.

          • @harvestloon: First book is great (The Name of the Wind).
Second book is pretty meh; barely moves the story ahead and has pretty lame author's weird sexual fantasies in it.

I read Cradle because it came up as free and I really liked it so I ended up reading the rest of his books too. Now I'm really hoping they get to actually produce the animated series of Cradle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FEayZdH-nk

      • What is cradle and how does it relate to this book?

        • +2

It's another series of books by the same author.

    • +1

I had never read any book of that genre in my whole life, and have stuck mostly with science fiction. A friend gifted me Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson on Christmas 2023, started reading it in January and haven't stopped reading all the other books by that author.

      • The Name of the Wind is an outstanding read in the genre. Truly special. Only 2/3 books complete of the planned trilogy FYI.
The other standout for me is The Lies of Locke Lamora, another unfinished series, brilliantly narrated by Michael Page if that is an option you are interested in.

How is it surprising that people read fantasy books? What an odd thing to comment.

I loved the Cradle series so much, but I’ve struggled to enjoy Will’s other work. Haven’t make it through book 1 of either of his other series.

I enjoyed Cradle and this, The last horizon series was DNF though

You purchased this edition on 31 May 2023.” <— Bought for free and added to the ‘I’ll read it later’ list.

  • Omg the author of Cradle. Finished the whole series.

  • I liked the magic system in this a lot. Didn't particularly love the story, but it was a fine enough read. Definitely worth picking up if its free.

  • "You own this".
Well, from 2022 I presume. Thanks Op!
