  • This vs powder from a price perspective and if powder, brand of choice?

    • +7

I use logic powder, $3.79 for a kilo

      • +20

The powder left a white residue on about 20-30% of the dishes. This issue isn’t unique to me either and I never used a ton of it.
Had to go back to tablets temporarily while I try to find a good powder

        • +1

I had a similar experience. Started using doubled strength vinegar for "rinse aid" this took care of the deposits and stale smell in the dishwasher for me.

          • @ripprind: Interesting, maybe I’ll attempt this. I assume you put the double strength vinegar in the rinse aid basket and fill up as needed?

            • +12

@eltito: yes. I use it exactly as I would use rinse aid.
My unit had a pretty bad stale smell - developed over the years. it took like a few weeks of using vinegar to get rid of it completely. But deposit streaks disappeared immediately.

I've found that different units operate quite differently. I had IKEA (I think it was rebadged Electrolux) and Midea in previous rentals, and using a Bosh at the moment. Obviously all the brands have different models but from my experience the IKEA unit was the best .
I'm a bit obsessed with doing laundry and dish washing, have tried many different detergents and in general try to keep my partner out of it. She's just terrible at stacking the dishwasher and hanging laundry 😁

              • +2

@ripprind: I find if I put too much powder in it'll leave residue. I don't put in that much in the basket, also always make sure I have pre-wash selected and sprinkle a little powder in the washer.

Haha, I feel you! Stacking the dishwasher is an absolute art form!

          • +1

            @ripprind:

Started using doubled strength vinegar for "rinse aid"

Interesting, definitely going to try this because my partner hates rinseaid

        • +5

That's an indicator that you used too much. You only need very little.

          • +4

@bboz: No. I tried the Aldi powder as well and it left white residue on any clear plastic containers. Tried varying the amount of powder used and didn't work.

          • @bboz: Exactly, you don't need much, just like you don't fill up the washing machine or liquid lid, or put a big toothpaste stripe on your brush like in the commercials, haha.

            • @G-rig: 100%
The toothpaste saga has been a challenging one with the kids BECAUSE of the marketing BS. Now they are well trained for "pea size".

              • @bboz: Get them electric toothbrushes and can only put a small amount on with the circular heads anyway, haha.

          • @bboz: I definitely have experimented with different amounts. And the reason I decided to try powder at all was to reduce the amount of detergent I use.
But using too little just doesn't get them clean enough and using more leaves marks !for me!

Different machines are different. I suspect my current Bosh is saving too much water and it also doesn't have pre-wash. Machine with pre wash, and that uses more water may be able to get away with using less detergent, and will have better rinse.

Vinegar as rinsaid has worked for me. Citric acid like suggested here might work too, but I would have thought lowering the pH significantly during the wash would interfere with the detergent, since detergents (soap) are often alkaline?

        • +3

I've used the powder with no issues on a Bosch Serie 8 Dishwasher for 5 years. I put a 20cent piece worth on the door and fill the container around the size of a tablet. I run an 'ECO mode 45c' + intensive zone' so it really breaks up the powder. I would suggest minimum of 45c with powder. I've tried Auto 30c-40c and there is always powder left in the container.

          • +5

@SoTightEcoLPI: I used aldi powder for years without problems, but I think they've changed the formula recently, and I now get the chalky white problem too. I've switched to a Coles one now- no problems

            • @derdew: I had the same experience with Aldi powder.

Got a refund for the bottle and buying it.

A shame because it’s made in Australia and the Shine powder is made in China.

        • I find that white residue = rinse aid is running low on my Miele dishwasher (55 degree setting)

        • +4

To remove the white stuff, you can buy in bulk 4/5kg of "100% Citric Acid" on ebay for $40-50. Add a spoon to each wash and it completely removes all the white stuff and makes everything way cleaner. It's 100% food safe. This is the same stuff they use in all those kettle/coffee cleaners to remove all the white calcium buildup. Saw a YouTube about this tip, figured it didn't hurt to try and was really blown away by the results.

          • @noshopping: Do you put it in with the detergent, or into the rinsaid dispenser?

            • @ripprind: Same place where tablets go.

              • +1

@noshopping: Thats interesting. From what I remember from school, (dish)soap is alkaline. Putting acid in with alkaline just "wastes " some of the soap by having it react with the acid.
Unless maybe dishwasher detergents are somehow different.

                • @ripprind: Try in both and report back which one was better for you.

                  • @noshopping: I'm already doing the "in rinsaid" method. So its easy enough to just splash some acid in with the wash when my rinsaid runs dry. But since my results are already good - it can only be "as good as"
I think the test should really be between putting in less detergent VS putting same amount with acid.

                • +1

@ripprind: Ah snap, just added the same point

          • +1

@noshopping: If you do this you are undermining a large part of the way dishwashing detergent does its job, which is through its alkalinity. As a final step, fine, but not mixed in at the start..

        • +2

Are any of the holes in the spinny plastic arms blocked?

    • +7

Having used every expensive and cheap powder and tablet, I can say the best are

      Powder - Shine, Woolworths $3.90/kg
Tablet - Finish Quantum, approx 38c/tablet (average standard price)

The cheaper tablets tend to be as good as the cheaper powder, but the “premium” tablets like these don’t need extra rinse aid - which can be bought in bulk cheap and you’ll come out ahead with powder. I occasionally need better cleaning power than the powder for things like dried dough and sauce pots, and I’ll use Finish for those, but everything from coffee cups and cutlery to baking trays and saucepans come up great with the cheap powder.

      • +21

Choice disagrees with your assessment. Woolworths Shine got only a 50% score, which is terrible. It's also made in China.

        • +16

Not sure why flyerone got negged so hard. We use Choice for other standards however seems personal opinion overruled Choice on this one?!?!?!

            • +8

@willyroo: "Fees are negotiated on a case-by-case basis" Choice Website

                YOU CAN NEGOTIATE UPFRONT

but trust us, our ratings are independent.

                Naive!

            • +8

@gimmeabreak: You are 100% correct. We, the subscribers pay them to recommend consumer products to us based on unbiased testing.

              • -7

@Flyerone: Even Christopher Zinn declared years ago that subs were not enough and they needed to raise money through commissions etc.

Their Tick requires a licence fee FFS.

When you click on their link for forex services there is referral ID to ensure they get paid by the provider.

                You guys are so naive.

              • -1

@Flyerone: And if you go to their financials you will find that the revenue for the Choice licensing fee is included with your subscription fees as "Customer revenue". Mate, those items being tested are from "Customers".

            • @gimmeabreak: care to substantiate your claim by furnishing some proof?

              • -2

                @Mel-waukee: Go to their website.

              • @Mel-waukee: Here's one.

when you click on a link for OFX when mentioned in their comparisons the actual link is

                https://www.ofx.com/en-au/?pid=4562

                the pid is partner id.

Choice have to setup an introducer account with OFX and negotiate a commission with them. Then they get a partner id and this link is supplied to them by OFX for this purpose.

When anyone clicks on that link and uses or sets up an account with OFX then Choice get a commission on every transaction, forever, when that person transfers money through OFX.

          • +3

@XCelR8: Choice have some interesting testing ideas.
But I wouldn't say they're comprehensive and accurate of performance for home use of many products. The score at the end is often not a reflection of the actual performance when you read the whole article..

Cleaning products are very personal of how you prepare & execute. We have septic so all our dishes/cutlery, etc get wiped off especially of grease before being put it. it also depends on how you stack your dishwasher, we leave gaps (unless the kids pop in a few last minute plates).

And it comes down to convenience, spending 17c a day on dishwasher tablet which the kids can easily do versus 2c for powder which I'd have to do, well I'm happy spending an extra $1/wk for convenience..

            • -3

@M00Cow: Exactly "The score at the end is often not a reflection of the actual performance when you read the whole article.."

              I wonder why?

          • @XCelR8: What a classic.

            Timeline:

I don't know why referring to Choice gets negged so much?

Because they get paid for recommendations.

            Neg neg neg neg ……

            They admit to getting paid.

            Neg neg …..

            Have you got any evidence?

            Here's the evidence.

No negs yet but some indoctrinated moron will still chuck one in.

            • @gimmeabreak: Classic

            • +4

              @gimmeabreak:

"Fees are negotiated on a case-by-case basis"

              From the same page:
"The fee structure depends on the length of the licence, number of products licensed by the same manufacturer and the nature of use."
              Also:
"The CHOICE Recommended program doesn't influence the outcomes or results of our testing."
"Funds from licence fees don't influence CHOICE's ratings"

They literally say over and over again that companies can't influence reviews.

Even Christopher Zinn declared years ago that subs were not enough

Dunno why you would reference someone who didn't work in a financial role at the company and hasn't worked there in almost 15 years.

Choice get a commission on every transaction, forever, when that person transfers money through OFX.

No, the OFX referral program has a fixed period per customer. Also, affiliate links are fairly common and generally accepted, they are also mentioned in the choice editorial guidelines, so they aren't hiding them.

              • @crowleysimon: How many people say one thing and do another?

              • -4

@crowleysimon: and all you have just done is acknowledge they get paid for reviews.
They just promise it doesn’t affect the outcome.

                How naive.

                • @gimmeabreak: "got my little neg in there" Far out.

Go and ask them where the $2.5million came from before the RC.

Who it was from and who they campaigned against afterwards.

Funnelled through an associated charity to give the donor a tax deduction.

                  They are for sale.

            • @gimmeabreak: and still the negs come in about the statement but you can’t neg the evidence. Morons.

        • +11

No, you always need to look at how the score is created, how it’s weighted (even in this case) and see if that applies to your use.

          Test results
          CHOICE Expert Rating 50%
          Egg yolk removal score 48%
          Rice starch removal score 15%
Baked-on diet cheese removal score 48%
          Red wine removal score 60%
          Coffee removal score 47%
          Minced-meat removal score 85%

Plus you would need to be using the same dishwasher and water source as Choice to find the same results.

I put very little value in Choices broad scores, you must always look at the breakdown.

Many years ago they gave the best TV score to an LG LCD model that was globally panned for its shit picture quality. Why did Choice have it winning? Because Choice only gave Picture Quality a 10% weighting on the entire score. They gave the remote usability (subjective) a greater weighting than the bloody picture quality. More so to the pic quality, because is did okay in shitty 576i presentations it was held up more than the complete crap it presented at all higher resolutions. As Aus broadcasts were still majority 576i, they said it was more important.
So yeah, you need to look at how/why they gave the score they did.

          • +1

@snuke: 100% their testing leaves a lot to be desired.. They're worth checking, but gee they're not very consistent with some of their testing regime. The number of times they've recommended stuff in the IT space or the office equipment space. and I've thought what the hell have you been testing? certainly not reliability. fixibility and usability.

            • +1

@M00Cow: Absolutely, on more than one occasion 'Choice' have tested things I'm very informed about and their recommendation has left me wondering what drugs they are smoking. lol

          • +2

@snuke: This is the real reason to be careful with Choice reviews, another example is washing machines. Dirt removal only accounts for 40% of the score, so a washing machine can be BAD at cleaning clothes but still get a good score.

        • -1

          Choice disagrees with your assessment.

True, but Shine is surprisingly good. It does a much better job than any tablet especially when used in both prewash & wash cycles. I don't see any white deposits on glass or ceramic either. I use the hottest program, though.

          • @bio: yeah the old 18-in1 omes were excellent. Inused ton have a very cantankerous AEG dishwasher and the shine 18 and 1 worked better than the Finnish Powerball. and this is on things such as spaghetti bolognese, scraped off the plate and put in The dishwasher and it was put on shortly after the plates had often come out with food still on with powerball tabs.

        • +2

FWIW, don't believe a word Choice have to say about home coffee machines. lol

        • Whether that shine brand is good or not would boycott woolworths for their price gouging practices ripping off millions

      • +3

+1 for Woolies powder. Cheap and gets the job done, unlike some of those ludicrously priced fancy dishwasher pods.

      • +1

After these tablets went out of stock I switched to the Shine powder and haven't had any dramas, and allows you to use detergent in the pre-rinse. So many variables tho, from what you eat to your dishwasher, it's hard to solidly recommend any given product.

    • +1

i used the aldi powder for 3 months and kept getting dried food stuck on my bowls almost every wash, which never happened with old 10 in 1 tablets, still happening a little with this 18 in 1 tablet

      • so, these are the current 18-in 1 tablets. I haven't bought them for a while as they didn't have them in stock….maybe they have changed the "recipe" and they aren't as good?

    • Choice Magazine recommends these over the powder.

Also these are Choice's overall recommendation.

  • +13

These are all I use now, and now they're even better priced. I'm still fascinated that others pay so much more for the finish ones. Happy days. Thanks OP.

  • +6

Pretty happy these are back. Damn im getting old.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • +2

    weren't they 14c/table?

    • +4

they have cheaper ones as well, but the platinum were the better ones. I haven't seen the platinum tablets for a while as they brought in the pods with liquid instead, so I just bought the basic ones. I will check our local to see if these ones are in stock again

      • These Platinum ones are what Choice magazine recommends

        • yes, but good luck getting them

      • What phraseology would you have suggested?

  • +20

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll6-eGDpimU

    tldr;
Dishwasher tablets are overpriced. Use cheap dishwashing powder and put half in the detergent dispenser for the main wash and half in the dishwasher itself for the prewash. You will get cheaper and better results this way than any tablet.

  • Oddly enough Aldi are also advertising the 46-pack in the latest catalogue for… $11.99

  • +2

The cheapest ALDI tablets are noticeably better than their powder!
Thanks for posting, I am going to add/ mix these more expensive ones.
Coles and Woolies powder about the same as ALDI powder … just ok.
    I scrape but don't rinse

    • my experience is completely different.

Bought a bottle of ALDI powder after March (when they changed their formula), it was not great, can't clean oil as well than others, and left lots of residue on the bottom of the filter, can't clear the food smell from the washer.

I thought it was the dish washer getting old… until I just happened to open a new bottle of Shine powder from Woolies, and no more smell, no more gunk in the filter….

after a few trial I figured out it's definitely the ALDI powder not doing the job properly, decided to use the remainder to clean my toilet,

guess what, there's residue in my toilet basin now.

  • These compared to Finish?

  • +3

It largely depends on your dishwasher and perhaps the setting you're running. Mine works better with liquid or the Costco tabs, but unfortunately doesn't work well with the Aldi tabs.

A different dishwasher (Bosch) worked flawlessly with whatever I threw at it.

    • Yes! And also your water hardness

  • +5

The "All in One" pack (45 for $6.29), making them 14c per tablet, is still available as well. Bought them last week. Tbh, I can't tell the difference in results between these and the Platinum ones (in an old AEG machine)

  • +3

Thx, For what it’s worth these topped the last Choice Magazine comparison.

    • Indeed. I would stay away especially Woolies made in China powder. You just don't know what chemicals they put in there to be that cheap. Hence 50% performance. You get what you pay for

  • Not currently subscribed to Choice, though these were highly rated from memory and weren’t as readily available for a while.

    • Me neither get it for free thx to OB

      • How so?

        • just did some searching on OB for choice and found backdoor way to get think its through Melbourne city library and Flipster

    • These were my tablet if choice but we're phased out for the pods, the new tablets are not as good.

If these were at my local I would stick up on them

  • +1

Switched to powder some months ago. Best decision ever. Savings loads
