      …what

    • +1

Ask in the forum's mate, people there who can tell you all about stuff like that.

    • +3

      cooked

    • +2

With enough ETH, you can do anything

  • +20

I have two of these bad boys, strongly recommended. 4k@144Hz is excellent, HDR is acceptably eye-murdering, very nice for both work and play. My only knock would be poor off-angle viewing, but if it's for desktop use it's not a problem worth worrying about.

    • +2

I've had one for a couple of years now and didn't realize it had poor off-angle viewing.

      • +4

mostly happends when watching dark scenes in movies and shows. When the content is brighter its not an issue.

        • Ahh gotcha - I don't watch movies or TV on mine. Only gaming, work and Youtube.

          • +3

@theguyrules: Yeah being an IPS panel the colour reproduction stays relatively true but the black level comes up off axis. As simontadaa said, its otherwise known as IPS glow

        • +4

Thats ips glow. You can even see it from looking straight at the monitor, the edges and corners have it.

    • +1

exactly, the off-angle/ or even straight on viewing on darker content is pretty poor to be honest, but otherwise a very good monitor especially at this price. I find it helpful to tilt the chin of the monitor upwards to make the contast better at the buttom of the screen, otherwise even at normal viewing angle the buttom sides of the screen are washed out.

      • I definitely don't get that - how close are you sitting?? Mine are maybe 80cm away.

        • I have a 80cm desk, so I'd say close to 80 cm as well based on my sitting position. I now know its called "IPS glow" from comments above. See @simontadaa's comment above.

  • +4

Tempted to buy this as a second one but I don't need it

  • -3

HDR on a LCD is like a spoiler on a potato.

    🥔

    • +2

im guessing HDR looks good only on OLED screens?

      • +1

Displays with dimming zones. OLED and MiniLED.

        • +8

This display has 8 dimming zones.

The G3223Q also has a DisplayHDR 600 certification and eight-zone local dimming
          https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/dell/g3223q

          • +2

@Agret: And from further down the page…

While it has decent overall picture quality, it fails to deliver a vivid HDR experience, as highlights don't pop that much, and it has a terrible local dimming feature.

      • +2

No, just need a lot of dimming zones and high brightness

    • +7

I have a very high end Sony TV with absurd HDR (just to point out I know what proper HDR looks like) and this monitor is honestly fine for HDR in PC gaming. Games like Horizon Zero Dawn look amazing. Definitely wouldn't waste money on an OLED just for better HDR.

      • +1

I strongly disagree, but obviously it depends on what type of experience you're after and what your budget is. I have both this monitor and a C3 OLED, and the HDR on the C3 is noticeably better. HDR on the Dell is quite poor and has a few weird brightness uniformity issues (ironically, this was particularly noticeable in a game like Horizon Zero Dawn).

Rtings has a good summary of what you can expect here:

        https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/dell/g3223q

    • +1

Lol no - you haven't had a GOOD LCD TV have you?

      • Just an OLED C2.

        • +6

Moved from a mid-range Sony OLED to Sony TOTL mini LED and the latter honestly slaughters the former, the theoretically slightly worse black levels are absolutely tiny as an issue compared to the insane peak brightness. No blooming, lower power use, less heat, no longer babying the TV in fear of burn in, zero regrets.

  • +1

Probably asked already in the past (which I can't find) is this good with an M1 Macbook Air 2020? I don't intent to use it for gaming, just creative cloud stuff, CAD? Thanks

    • +6

You'd be better serviced by a more 'business' oriented monitor with a Type C connection IMO, rather than the gaming oriented 144hz models. Not saying that 120+hz doesnt look nice/feel nice for work too, but it's not really required. This monitor will require a dongle/dock to connect to your laptop given the m1 air only has 2 Type C ports.

Could consider the 4k 27" model often on sale for sub 400, if 32 isnt 100% required, have used personally and highly recommend though 32" is a little more 'balanced' for 4k IMO.

      https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-27-4k-uhd-usb-c-monitor…

Sub 400 currently. Have had this monitor for coming up to 3 years now. Been solid! It's only 65w but an M1 air is fine with 65w

      • I have the S2722QC too but the screen has a purple and blueish hue compared to my MBP.

      • -1

I agree with @ReaperX22, the main selling point for the Dell is the 144Hz which the M1 doesn't really support anyway, you need a very specific USB-C to HDMI dongle to make it work.

For a similar price, I'd highly recommend the LG:
        https://www.jw.com.au/product/lg-32bn88u-b-31-5-uhd-ips-4k-u…

I got one of these, it has USB-C so a single cable gives both power and video out to the monitor (+ some additional USB-A). Good colours, nice ergonomic stand and 32" is a comfortable size for productivity tasks.

        • +4

Get a USB-C to Displayport cable and the M1 will run this at 144Hz.

          YIWENTEC USB C to DisplayPort 1.4 8K Cable with USB-C PD 8K@60Hz 4K@144Hz Converter Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort Adapter (2M) https://amzn.asia/d/eXNFsTl

          • @futaris: It's not overkill for video editing using premiere pro and CAD software ? Sorry newbie here

            • +1

              @kobeduck: Don't need 4k for CAD.
Maybe photo editing if you do it for a living or hobby. Great screen for the money anyway and Dell is quality.

        • +1

I just plugged my M1 Air into this screen with.a USB-C to DisplayPort cable and 144Hz works fine. (I did have to power cycle the screen to get the Air to come up with the 144Hz option.) No need for an HDMI dongle of any kind.

    • I would like to know too because a LOT of recent Dell monitors flicker with M chip Macs.

  • +1

Thanks for the deal @Grok, is there any UW IPS Monitor with 120Hz+ as those QD-OLED are not good for Office work and solely for gaming and I am looking for something 80% office work and 20% gaming.

    • +1

There's only a few IPS ultrawide monitors. And they are all inferior at gaming compared to OLED or VA panel
Better to go with 2x28 or 2x32, or even a 42inch monitor

      • +6

I don't know where you got that IPS is inferior to VA for gaming.. VA generally suffers smearing issues. And fast/high quality IPS panels beat out VA IMO. VA have a better contrast ratio but outside that I don't see them as being superior in any way to IPS

        • +1

I'm talking about ultrawide monitors, basically IPS curved monitor is not at all popular. There's a few good IPS exceptions, mostly from LG and Gigabyte, but they at that price range they are all inferior to high-end VA panel from 2022 Samsung, or 2022-2024 OLED panel

Yes high quality IPS is generally better than cheap VA panel, not high-end VA. High-end VA from Samsung is by far superior than IPS, although they are pushing OLED panel in 2024

          • @Elquines: Would you help me point good VA panel ultrawide monitors, preferably 34" size?
            Cheers

        • +2

Also, the majority of Ozbargain seems to bash VA panel and prefer IPS. Nothing is wrong here because in the sub $800 range, IPS is better. Most people experience VA ghosting/smearing issues in the more affordable monitors and then blame VA panel.

  • +3

Also have 2 of these bad boys, fantastic bang for your buck. No OLED only drawback, that kind of goes without saying and is reflected in the price

90% of my use is for work, perfect monitors for an extremely overkill work setup

    • +1

Haha, are you me? Excellent for having 4 documents open at once… sob.

    • +1

Also have two of these, super happy so far. Light gaming, 90% office work so I wouldn’t want oled.

  • +1

I have one of these and it's great. I would agree with the off angle viewing being a bit dodgy but as a main screen for gaming the price cannot be beaten.

I should note i have a 4080 Super which is one of the only cards that will run anything in 4k 144hz (The other being the 4090)

    • +1

what sort of FPS are you getting? Currently running 4080s with 7800x3d and wanting to try gaming at 4k. Do you think its a noticeable stepup from 1440p gaming?

      • current setup is 4080 super with 7800x3d. I don't really play anything triple A but i get the full 144hz 4k in everything i've played so far.

  • +2

I bought this monitor during ATL. I'd say this monitor is very good for office work.

If you consider buying this to game or do video editing then I don't recommend. There's some better options out there

Ultimately returned it but this is a solid one at $500-600

    • What would you recommend for someone that doesn't game a ton, but does a bit of everything on it? Movies, Youtube, Gaming, a little bit of productivity.

Is there anything in the 32" range that fits that bill that is also $500-600 dollars on special (I'm willing to wait for specials/discounts), or not really?

Also, I don't have the horsepower to run 4k as I've got an AMD 6900XT. So I'm guessing a 2K 1440p 32" monitor might be the way to go for me?

Current Monitor is a 27" Dell S2721DGF, but I'm finding it a bit too small.

      • Your Rx 6900XT can sure run 4k for youtube or movies, although how many frames it can push on 4k gaming depends on the game and your cpu. For this reason you should go 4k monitor if possible. Also it's worth investing in monitors because you can go with it in long term.

This monitor ticks all the box for you. I'd say go for it at this price

        • I meant for games at 4K. I assume the higher refresh rate, and the 6900XT wouldn't be great together for games at higher refresh rates. I thought you'd need an RTX 4080 Super or 4090 for that, but I guess it depends what games.

I would be great for movies, though.

I also prefer a monitor that isn't curved. Not sure if you have an opinion on that? I've never used a curved monitor before, but don't like the idea of one expect for gaming. Not sure how they'd go for productivity or movies.

As for alternatives, even if this is the best choice in this price range, what else would you recommend? I'd like to look at a few more (even if they're in the $600-$800 range).

  • Had this for now i think 2 years and love it
For colour accurate photo editing, media consumption and gaming

  • +3

Here's an in-depth review of the monitor done by RTINGS:

    https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/dell/g3223q

  • +1

Had one for a few months now, only for office use and its great. Runs off an M1 Air so it sits at 60hz, its simply the best value 4K 32 inch IPS monitor on the market.

  • Have one it’s great!

  • +1

    $499 on outlet

    • +2

      Isn't it refurbished?

      • +1

It is. Does carry the same warranty though. For an extra $50, I'd take this one too.

  • +2

Is this overkill for normal office work? My 28" 4K is starting to get too small for my old eyes, I'm wanting to upgrade to 2 x 32" 4K, but all I do is spreadsheets. Am I going to notice much difference with 2 of these: https://www.centrecom.com.au/samsung-s7-32-uhd-3840-x-2160-h… vs the Dell for almost $300 more (for two)?

    • +3

Have you tried playing with the settings in Windows? Search for 'change the size of text' (Scale and layout, change the %) and 'make text size bigger' (change the %s) in the Windows start menu and play with the options. They may help.

      • +1

Yeah I know about scaling…I need every pixel I can get for this job!

        • +1

this won’t get you more pixels, just bigger pixels 27” 4k vs 32” 4k, more pixels at 4k you would need 2 screens.

    • The brightness on the Samsung seems on the low side at 300cd/m2? Might be worth looking up some reviews.
If your computer will do 144Hz, it's nice to have but I can't say 60Hz ever bothered me before.

  • +1

Can get 8% off coupon through unidays for $550.54

  • Damn bought this the other day for slightly more. Do dell offer price protection?

  • Is it worth upgrading from S3422DWG? Mainly using it for work.

    • +1

That's what I'm wondering too. The S3422DWG is great for gaming and general stuff but terrible for photo editing

    • They're very different in how you arrange windows and the scaling you use. Personally I prefer 4k for work (this one), but I also have 2x27 on the sides.

  • Anyone know if this still looks good gaming in 2k? The games i play won't get decent frames at 4k unfortunately

    • If you haven't seen it yet, there's an app called Lossless Scaling which does a fantastic job at upscaling and inserting framegen into games that don't normally support it, and it now supports gsync also as of a few weeks ago. You can set up profiles per game that can do any combination of framegen to 4x (so you could have a game play at 36fps cap, and go to 144, or, maybe more realistically for gsync, 33-4), use FSR, NVIS, integer scaling, whatever, to from any arbitraty resolution you can run in a window, up to 4k. It's been a lifesaver on my 3060 machine with a 27" 4k panel.

Basically the only real limitations are a modest increase in input lag, that it doesn't work great if your GPU is already maxxed to the max performance (so ideally you're running a game at 80-90% utilisation and then turn LS on), that it needs a game to run in a window, and won't cooperate with many other overlays, and sometimes Special K seems to work better than RTSS or NVidia control panel as a frame limiter.

      • I have heard of it. Im n their discord but i forgot what it was. Thanks for the reminder. I'll check it out a bit more. I'm happy to run the game at 2k. Just want to make sure it's OK.

Edit: because of the moronic auto corrects 😅

  • Thanks OP Bought! All the upvotes can't be wrong :D

  • Look good for the price. Still rocking 2x S3220DGF 165hz for about the same price.

  • My graphics card won't hit 1440p. If I play @ 1080p, does it black bar the edges?

    • This is a 4K monitor - so whether or not you can hit 1440p doesn't matter.

1080p is a quarter of 4K which means that there won't be black bars. It will work - just won't be very sharp.

You'll notice a nice upgrade when you get a GPU that can do 4K

  • Will my old AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series video card be capable of operating this monitor?

  • Wish all 32 IPS 4K monitors were in this reasonable price range

  • +1

    This or Dell 2209WA?????

  • No more codes? :(

  • is this worth upgrading from s2721dgf?

    • wouldn't have thought so, unless you want 4k and or 32" (and once you go somehing as big as a 32" or 2x you'd want curved).

  • Wish it had USB C. Everything else is perfect.

  • No more codes available… ahhhh

    Edit: found codes on cuponation

  • -1

This has poor latency below 120hz so if you like vrr and you play non-optimjsed games with even a 4080, then this monitor is azz. Resolution has quite a lot of diminishing return at 4k even at 32", why? because its matte coating diffuses light so much that the more you increase your ppi, the much less return that you get because that matte layer lowers the ceiling a ton, a bottleneck if you will..

  • What about this one?

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-34-curved-gaming-monito…

Monitor will be used for gaming

    • 1440p ultrawide and curved for better for gaming experience. 32" 4k for productivity

      • It’s a VA panel tho

        • I have this monitor which has nore accurate color and better text readability.

But my kid has VA which has pretty nice black levels and lower latency which is better for gaming imo.

If viewing angle matters then IPS is way to go but my kid's VA is no slouch, view angle dont matter when gaming especially curved

          • @lagur: I didn’t realise it was so confusing buying a monitor

My daughter just wants a 32” or bigger curved monitor for gaming. She plays Fortnite, Roblox and Minecraft mostly

Can you recommend one at a good price?

            • +1

@Twisty: That 34" monitor is pretty good for its price actually

      • Curved is good once you get bigger than 27", as the corner of the screens are a bit far away, particularly with 2x32". I find them still great for graphics and productivity and general computing.

The ultrawides are cool, but most of the 34-38" are not tall enough for documents.

        • Not much of a fan of ultrawides as I prefer my 2x 32" especially I do more productivity but I could see my kid would be extremely happy to have that monitor over her aging 27" 144hz.

          • @lagur: Yeah they would be fine for most people j just don't think they are big enough either (particularly height). 1x 49"dell ultrawide would rock though. Still can't go wrong at this price for someone.

            Agree I got 2x 32" curved dgf.

  • Damn, there are no more codes on techradar….does anyone have a spare code?

    • Patience, keep checking it will return I think in a week or two or three.
