  • damn so sad i missed out

    • +1

All you missed out on was having multiple thousand dollars sitting in Qantas accounts until they decide to refund you for their screwup.

      • Buy now and think later, you'll never know. No cancellation yet at this stage. You won't die with your $4.4k sitting on their bank. In short, at least it touches Joyce bank lol

  • +14

    Etickets issued with receipt.

    • Well done. Wish I'd gone through with it.

    • did you buy this morning and the tickets just issued?

      • +5

I bought with pay later, paid the $4k a hour later.

$25 refunded, and got eticket and receipt after requesting email through the website.

      • +1

booked around 4am; issued around 7am.

  • +1

I'd rather fly cheap and spend that money on experiences.

    • +8

First Class is the experience for some :)

    • +1

      Why compromise? Do both

    • -5

I thought hard about this, and I agree.

Even for $2000 I wouldn't do it, when I can fly economy for $1000.

For that extra $1000 saved, I could fly return from Sydney to Ho Chi Minh direct 3 separate times and still have $90 left over.

      • +3

I used to think this way when I was a student and had unlimited time (but no real money) during breaks between semesters.

When you get a real job you’ll start valuing your time and simply won’t have the annual leave (or freedom from commitments) to travel to Ho Chi Minh 3 times even if you can get cheap flights.

If you can only travel once or twice per year and make reasonable money why be miserable the whole way there and back when you can pay only double and be pampered. These tickets normally cost 8-10 times what economy costs. Costing only double is a bargain.

        • +1

Except if you’re no longer a single student with 1 airfare to pay for, but married with 2 teenage kids. So the double fare you were talking about is now double on 4 tickets. $17K is still a significant amount of money when you can do it for half that amount!

(I have paid premium economy for the family to Europe in the past, and paid business for myself on a very good deal when travelling without family!).

  • +2

lol this plane will be full of OzBargainers paying well under - no one’s going to be getting first class treatment 😆

  • +8

Ozb meetup over the south pacific ocean.
No chance they will honour this 🤣

    • -4

Several etickets were already issued brodie.

      • +5

Issued and honoured are two different things 🙂

        • What will happened to the eticket and receipt? Safe to say this is honoured if I received my wine while sitting on the first class? Or they will throw me to Business class because I only paid 4k lol

          O well, let's see.

          • +2

            @Fredfloresjr: Goodluck mate

            • @ajs900: Yeah, but I am expecting they will cancel this, if they do, do it now lol, not two days before the flight. I need my kids to see their grandmother this Xmas.

              • @Fredfloresjr: They will cancel it few days or weeks before the flights and it will take you few weeks to get the refund lmao

                • @Buynowbrokelater: Yeah expected bro, As I have commented before here, I already explained this to my wife lol.

edit: Joyce can use my few $$ at Casino.

            • +2

@ajs900: No luck mate, they kicked me out. Was fun tho.

  • +1

4 tickets from MEL-LAX cancelled and refunded :(

    • Did you get an eticket before they cancelled?

      • +7

Yes they were ticketed and processed, just looking on the Qantas App and they are now gone, PNR no longer works. Waiting for a confirmation of cancellation.

Being ticketed does not mean that they are going to honour it, I've had AF First Class error fares booked 300 days out, cancelled within 5 days from dep.

        • Damn hey…. That would be awesome if it had been honoured.

        • Ouch, cancellation 5 days from departure must have stung. Did they compensate you at all?

          • @Ozybargdias: Air France gave me two options;
1 - Receive a full refund of the $945.50 fare
2 - Be rebooked into the original fare cost category (Economy)

Went for the refund and snagged redemption fare through DOH to MEL (Back when QR J was avail through QFF)

          • @Ozybargdias: Because this is a flight to/from the US then US DOT rules apply. If they left it so late and people booked non-refundable items QF would be on the hook to refund them.

    • +1

Sorry to hear mate! Was wondering if you jumped on this one. I wasn't awake early enough and my success with mis-price has been mixed over the years. Most cancelled in last half decade, and much more success pre 2018ish. I've seen stories of folks whose itinerary was cancelled mid-journey (depart same/next or within a few days of the mis-price ticket) with Gulf carriers and they had to buy last minute one-way returns from Europe!

I've always enjoyed revisiting this FT post during these 'events', or the updated version and watching the story unfold as described in the comments.

      • Thanks for this. Enjoyed reading it.

  • Also an FYI; Qantas can absolutely cancel "error fares" - this is from the offical conditions of carriage for QF flights

    3.12 Errors and mistakes
Sometimes mistakes are made and incorrect fares can be displayed. If there is an error or mistake that is reasonably obvious in the fare price and you have a Ticket and/or a confirmed booking, we may:
    (a) cancel the Ticket and/or booking;
    (b) provide you with a refund in accordance with 14 (Refunds);
    (c) offer you a new Ticket at the correct fare price as at the time of the booking; and
    (d) in the event that you accept the offer and pay the correct fare issue you with a new Ticket.

    • Just wondering… how do we know it was an error fare? I've book, paid and flown Sydney to Peru on Delta One return for 5K.

      • true. Even it is $1, could be a promo price.

      • +2

Delta one is only business class , despite the “One” that’s just used for Americans , I’ve flown it a few times

  • +1

Improve cash flow for Qantas, free loan from OzB!

  • Looks like people are getting their tickets recalled.

At least the refund has been quick…

  • Read the review. Qantas first class to LA is not much better service than business. OK champagne only. I followed the spirit of OZB , buy first think later… happy if getting a full refund

    • +1

From someone who has flown QF F and J numerous of times. The difference, the key differences is the seat. Its a proper bed versus a seat that goes flat. If you aernt WP+/OWE you also get the excellent F Lounges in SYD/LAX.

Catering is a hit and miss, still good but wouldnt say its that much better than J. Champagne I've been served is Comtes 2008 Vintage which retails for around $350 per bottle and is pretty good from my experience.

      • +1

Usually need to drink 3 bottles each flight to get some value back

  • sounds so risky to book hotels and other flight tickets. Totally messed up if they cancel within just a few days before departure.

    • Book refundable hotels…

  • I guess the seats likely would have been empty anyway. Probably better to just let it be from Qantas' perspective. I doubt more than a few people will have bought them and most of them will be the sort of people Qantas can't afford to upset. Consider the bad Qantas PR at the moment, I don't think QF can afford another media hate campaign and ACCC battle. Qantas' problem is that the fares showed that it was a FIRST SALE. Irrespective of anything else it would be reasonable for a consumer to have taken it as a once off limited special

    • +1

I put two bookings through (pay-later) for April 2025 and all four flights were completely empty in first class. Some people may not book specific seats in premium sections, but I think it was indicative that seven months out, the F booking load is very light.

      • +2

When you’re rich or a CEO, you don’t really need to book early to save a few k. And I bet if you tried to get a classic points seat in that empty F class plane there would be nothing available

        • Correct.

        • Platinum, Platinum One and Chairmans Lounge can request First Sale Fares be turned into Classic Reward. Although its more like a "force" for CL

  • -1

Spewing, my booking has been cancelled too.

    Nice find though OP

    • Did you get email?

      • No, I just can't see the booking anymore

        • When was your booking for?

        • I booked for July next year and it's still there. Maybe anytime now.

    • Out of curiosity, did you book just for yourself or in a big group?

  • +1

Would cancellation of this fare be covered under travel insurance? ie if they cancel and you have to rebook paying full fare and get reimbursed for it?

    • Nope.

    • +1

Also I did a dummy booking at the time the sale ~ $21k for 5 people, but a whopping $147k if you paid full fare!

      • $21k, that would cover my whole entire trip!!!

  • Missed out - glad I didn't book as it appears tickets are now cancelled

    • Mine not cancelled……yet

    Hi,

    Your recent Qantas booking

We are contacting you regarding a pricing error on Qantas.com for some flights between Australia and the USA. Due to a coding error, incorrect First Class fares were published for some flights by mistake. We have identified that your booking was affected by this error and are contacting you with an important update about your booking. We sincerely apologise for this error.

    Next Steps

Instead of cancelling and refunding your booking, on this occasion, as a gesture of goodwill, Qantas will be rebooking you in the Business Class cabin on the same flight for the same price you have already paid. This represents a significant discount on our standard Business Class fares. We anticipate this will take us a few days to work through.

There is no action required from you and an updated ticket will be sent to you at this email address.

If you do not wish to proceed with travel in our Business Class cabin, you are eligible for a full refund. You will receive a further email from us within 72 hours with information on how to obtain a refund. Please do not cancel your booking until you have heard from us.

We apologise for this error and thank you for your understanding.

    Kind regards,

    Qantas Customer Care

      Here we go

    • Same here

    • Nice one!! You have status or just lucky?

      • +2

I'm gold but honestly didn't think they would care about status when the fare difference was so huge, and they would just cancel

      • +5

I'm Bronze and got offered business

        • Same.

    • Sounds promising.

    • Got offered the same. Question for the learned OZB mob: What do you think the best way to negotiate a change of the date of flight would be in this situation?

The flight date I entered has ended up being too early but I'd accept the inconvenience if it was First Class. Given it's business, I'd cancel if it's not a later date.

I note that the 'Flight Change by Qantas' website states the following:

If the new flight doesn't meet your travel plans, you can view other options at Manage booking.
These may include a Flight Credit  or refund.
Refer to our  Compensation and Refunds Policy  for more information on the assistance provided in the event of a flight delay or cancellation.

Gives hope I might be able to negotiate from that position, I'd say? If so, how do I 'contact' them about it? Anyone ever changed a flight date to their advantage (no fees etc) in circumstances where Qantas changed you before?

      • +1

I'd expect the original conditions would apply with a $400? change fee.

You may be lucky if they rebook you without conditions, if so, I'd take that as a win. If you're fine with the change fee, that's reasonable. And if you aren't happy to pay the change fee, you should be able to just get the refund.

        • Thanks @odysseus for the share.Sounds like I'll wait for them to make the Business fare change and then enquire.

Given it's my partner and I travelling, that'd be $800 to change the Depature flight over I presume? Or do you have a source for the fees I can look at?

          • @tommypickles: You can see the rules here: https://www.qantas.com/au/en/book-a-trip/flights/fare-types/…

            $400 per person

But I wasn't thinking of the fare difference which also usually is applied (which is significant in this case as they would charge the difference between what you paid and what they normally charge). That's usually only waived when they cancel/change your flight. So sadly I can't think of any good options around that. Unless they set up a custom email address to handle refunds, where you can also ask to change the date, and they may display more 'goodwill'.

      • +2

How far away is your flight? Airlines usually adjust their schedules twice a year (Sept and March) I believe, so assuming it is beyond Sept, I would be fairly confident in getting a schedule change between now and then.

In which case, it should be enough to get you a free flight change or refund. There is occasionally some discussion of this tactic on AFF.

        • November.

FWIW It seems too that prior to the email, they’d already changed the First Class flight departure time out of Australia.

Would I want to wait closer to October to closer the deal then perhaps?

    • +1

FYI your comment is linked from a Guardian article

    Rebooked onto business, big win

    • Maybe cause I only booked one ticket? Did people who get cancelled book multiple?

      • +1

Booked 2 tickets. Got offered business

        • Did any family get business?

      • +1

I booked 3 and got offered business

  • We can cancel within 24 hours anyway right?

    • Not sure where you got this idea. Cancellation would cost $600 per person on First Sale fares.

The qantas email says they will offer full refunds in via email in 72 hours so if you want a refund you can get one, but only because of this error not because a full refund was part of the booking terms.

    • The email states specifically "Please do not cancel your booking until you have heard from us." and continues "If you do not wish to proceed with travel in our Business Class cabin, you are eligible for a full refund. You will receive a further email from us within 72 hours with information on how to obtain a refund."

Seems wait for the flight change, then cancel, is what they're asking you to do.

  • +2

    What a win!!!!!
Business class return as a peace offering! I’ll take it! $8.5k is better than $33k!

    • I just checked and my Melbourne to New York booking in April costs $15,800 per person on a business class sale ticket so $4300 is quite a good deal.

Unfortunately the reason I was able to book was because I was overseas and therefore awake at 3am Australian time. Not going to fly back to Australia just to fly J to New York, like I would have for F.

Will be taking the refund. :(

      • I wonder if you can change the name for a few? I bet someone would take you up on the offer for Melb to NYC for the additional $400 change name fee 🤔🤔🤔

        • I checked and First Sale fares do not allow name change unfortunately.

Would have been awesome if they did. I also tried texting my friends about the deal in the morning but none of them woke up in time to book :(

          • +1

@stirlo: Call them and say “given the circumstances, I ask that I am allowed to change the names”

            • @Buz1986: First question is will they be able to flip the flight direction, if it was to fly to Australia to visit it would be nearly perfect for me :)

              • @stirlo: No harm in asking. They are in damage control so more chances to get it now than ever!

                • @Buz1986: Also will be interesting to see what ticket code the replacement Business fares are. Perhaps the rules for them will allow name changes :)

            • @Buz1986: Hey @Buz1986 ! I have a similar challenge to @stirlo except in my case, I'd want to change the flight out date to later. How exactly would I "call" to negotiate though? Any idea on how to execute that?

              • +1

@tommypickles: Knowing Qantas it will be the most restrictive business ticket they can offer… no date change without fee, no name change, no miles, no lounge access
(Though for a lie flat seat i could skip all that stuff).
