That is pretty much the most expensive time to travel. You're not going to find any good deals for those dates.

      • +2

Yep. Generally school holidays are the worst dates

      • 13 Dec is not too bad. Early enough to miss the crazy peak. Returning around 1st Jan is usually not too bad either as people don’t want to travel over New Years. Travel a week later and prices doubles.

        • Yeah even still see reward seats available between 25th-1st despite the general holiday blackout during that months and a bit.

    • -1

It's ridiculous the flight I'm looking at is $2,200 one way on that day. Dynamic pricing is a scam of a joke.

      • That's not dynamic pricing, it's revenue management

  • +1

    Sweet! It’s time! November!

  • -4

Is there something special about September in Japan that means they really have sales for that month? Been looking for sales on return flights within that month and can't find anything….

  • +2

Shame, still no sale on business class. Last year they had them every few months.

    • Yes every quarter for 2999+

    • Yes. Miss flying for below 4k.

These days, anything between 5-6 is the norm. Well, can't help it when Econ is asking for 1.5-2k.

  • oh wow this is definitely awesome price for anyone thats going to the snows in japan in Feb (albeit I have a family so unless i get scolded from the wife for taking out my kids from primary school - has anyone done this early in the school year?)

    • +2

Screw school… they'll get more from experiencing another culture and spending time with family. More than what they'll get from school

      • Depending on school. Some are not had at all.

    • +1

I have. They're in primary school. Just do it.

      • and how do you guys do it, like get kids to school for say first 2 weeks of Feb and then take them out for 2 weeks after for overseas trip?

        • -1

Don't think the school cards. A few private school is strict on this.

Though it sets up a precedent for the kids and probably a wrong message to just bend rules as it suits.

        • Yep that's what we usually do. Either towards start or end of term.

  • +1

    None for Perth?

  • No flights from Melb?

    • +1

ANA and Virgin should but don't offer cheap connecting flights from Melbourne via Sydney.

  • +7

Early November is awesome for autumn colours in Japan and it's after typhoon season.

ANA has excellent 34" legroom but narrower seats than JAL.

ANA has the cheapest exit row seat selection fees: $50.

Daytime direct flights to Haneda Airport both directions on a Japanese airline at these prices from Australia is what people wait for.

Always book direct for all the reasons.

    • +6

Yep I flew ANA for the first time last year. Arriving at Haneda is so much nicer than Narita. Day time return flight was miles ahead of the overnight returns I'd done previously.

Also the ANA theme that plays when boarding and landing is comfy af

I forgot about the free return flights Tokyo > Osaka. Another W.

      • What did you mean by your last sentence regarding the free return flights?

      • -1

Why are day flights better than night?

        • +2

Well maybe it depends on the person but I can't sleep sitting on a plane.

        • Majority of hotels in Japan do not have the flexibility of check in earlier than 3pm

          • @eutama:

do not have the flexibility of check in earlier than 3pm

But the majority will be happy for you to drop your luggage with them, and store it until you do check in after 3pm. So you can go sightseeing on the first day, assuming you're not too sleepy.

I used this last November. Stayed at hotels in Tokyo, Matsumoto, Takayama, Takaoka, and Osaka. Every hotel was happy to store my bags until check-in time, and the Osaka hotel also stored my bags after check-out time on my final day, as my flight departed at midnight. If you look on hotel booking sites, they usually have "baggage storage" listed under "facilities". There may be a few hotels that won't store your bags, just avoid them when choosing your hotels.

If you can sleep on the plane, I'd argue night flights are better than day flights:

            • You don't have to arrive at the airport at some horribly early hour in the morning
            • You effectively pay for one or two less nights of accommodation overseas, as you're spending those nights on the plane. E.g. if you're flying out Saturday morning, you're paying to stay in a hotel Friday night. Why not just fly out Friday night?
            • @Russ:

But the majority will be happy

Have yet to come across one that declines to store your luggage either before check-in or after check-out. Not even in all my travels with airbnb and zero star hostels lol.

              • @vawiyoci: I came across one when I was booking my Japan holiday last year. I sent them a query, asking if their listing was incorrect, and they came back with "Sorry, no, we don't have any space to store luggage". So I picked a different hotel. The one that said no looked like a converted house.

For some of the hotels I stayed at "storage" actually meant "sitting in the foyer with a cargo net draped over the luggage". One had a cargo net with bells attached, which I thought was innovative. There was no way to move the net without making a lot of noise!

For anyone thinking that the availability of storage lockers at public transport locations makes it unnecessary to use hotel luggage storage, it's not always the case. Although all Japanese stations appear to have luggage storage lockers, they're not guaranteed to be available. When I stayed near "Hida No Sato" historic village, reviews said that school excursions to the historic village will often completely fill the station's storage lockers with school bags.

    • ANA also has free texting over wifi.

  • Booked 25 Nov to 16th Dec on ANA website for 1828 x2
    Thanks

Cracking deals, the 5/Feb to 18/Feb for Sapporo is an excellent deal. Peak snow and very likely when the snow festival is on. Lots of activities on during this time especially if you take the kids.

The prices was around 1500 this year in Feb flying with ana.

with 10 hour layover, do you have to stay in airport right? like i can't get out of hotel and stay in one of the hotels thats just outside of the airport?

      • You should be able to clear customs and leave the airport. I'm planning a 7 day layover in Tokyo.

        • amazing day flight with long layover at tokyo is $862 but then night time flight to tokyo with short layover at tokyo is $1128 which is what i'd want so then at least I can sleep on the flight to japan lol

        • What's the easiest way to schedule such a long layover?

Haven't done a same terminal transfer with ANA at HND but I think you can seeing as you need to grab your luggage from baggage claim. Drop bags at the domestic transfer and go to say Villa Fontaine at the airport?

  • +1

Appears the flight deals from Sydney to Sapporo involve an overnight layover in Haneda. That sours the deal for Sapporo flights given an overnight stay in Tokyo is required both ways.

  • +4

Just a tip - hit open jaw on the ANA website and you can land in Sapporo and leave from Tokyo for example, for similar prices.

  • +1

I just flew with ANA a couple of weeks ago. Very happy with the service and the food.

  • +2

    Melbourne please

  • +5

If i book directly on the ANA website it's $931 so about $60 more expensive. Do you think it's worth it for peace of mind?

    • +1

      Yes

    • +1

To be fair, once booked via OTA I manage everything through the airline's own portal anyway, and if cancellations or date changes are required then I'm out of pocket either way when booking on the cheapest ticket tier.

But if circumstances do arise, dealing with the airline is certainly better than dealing with the OTA. Credit card protections may offer some safety net though.

  • +1

Just to note that these cheap fares are for 'Light' only. So only one piece of check in baggage allowed. This means you won't be able to take snowboards / Ski's unless that's all you are taking.

    • i thought snowboards/skis were always included free even if its light?
so do you have to pay extra for bringing them?

      • +1

Yep, they are no longer included in these light fares. You have to book the standard fare. Only one check in bag allowed with light. Its a real shame for the winter Japan trips.

  • 'just' 23kg bags is a shame

    • thats standard - whats the issue? lol

      • ana deals at similar price in the past usually have 2 x 23kg

        • Oh wow didn’t know

        • Yeah they dont do that anymore. Might be due to the popularity of their blue sales :(

  • +1

It's not standard on ANA. Light is a new fare, usual fares on ANA include two check in bags, both 23 KGS each. So if you are heading there in winter you can take your snowboard as check in for free……

  • Anyone else having issues searching on the Ana website? Showing at 950 usd for me.

    • Same. Click thru via sky scanner and it should work.

      • Think I figured it out. It was somehow taking me to the US Ana site I think. Second link on Google was the au on e
