@tommypickles: Just get emotional on the phone. You broke the good news to your partner, dipped into your savings for your honey moon to make it extra special, so now you’re feeling heartbroken and yet to break the news to her.

  • So a mate did manage to book a flight for next year - he just received a notification from qantas that it was an error however rather than cancelling the ticket, they'll honour it as a business class flight instead

  • Received same email!

  • +1

I have only paid $25 and notificafion is stating

Instead of cancelling and refunding your booking, on this occasion, as a gesture of goodwill, Qantas will be rebooking you in the Business Class cabin on the same flight for the same price you have already paid. This represents a significant discount on our standard Business Class fares. We anticipate this will take us a few days to work through.

There is no action required from you and an updated ticket will be sent to you at this email address.

Time will tell if they ask to pay remaining 99.99% fare lol

  • Booked as a family and got the business class offer

  • Got the same offer!

  • It's Qantas J/F, whatever you think it's worth, divide it by 2 or 3.

    • Then what’s the division for Air India?

      • For me…zero, because I'd never use it.

  • +1

I got offered 2 x J MEL-SYD-LAX return. The ticket status on my booking has changed from F to J, but Qantas says under my “pay-later” payment method I have to pay $45,907.40 for the two new J tickets! :(. Hopefully this will update correctly.

    • +1

Can you confirm if they are actually fare class J? And not a more restrictive business like D or I?

  • +7

If people got flights during the holiday period, even though its a downgrade, its still excellent value as its hard to even get economy for 2k, let alone business for 4k.

  • I managed to book a return flight.
Given the downgrade from First > Business I'm wondering now what the status credits will be on this.
Yesterday it was 595 status from memory for MEL > SYD > LAX, LAX > MEL on First.
I'm Gold and booked this as I knew 600 would maintain my gold for another year.
Now wondering if the re-booking to Business will be a 'Sale' fare as well attracting those Status credits instead, which is around 500 instead.
Hmmm.. maybe I wait the 72hrs suggested then call the Call Centre.. then again I know most have a lack of knowledge when it comes to these sorts of tricky question/scenarios.

    • The email said to wait, they will downgrade the booking and then also send a follow up email once that's done that you can respond to if you wish to cancel.

It was clearly listed on the original post here on ozbargain as an error fare so booking it thinking you're going to retain a tier is a bit far fetched and unless Platinum or above getting access to local call centres you're not going to get great answers .

      • +1

I'm not sure if your response has added any value what so ever.
Yes we know the fare will be 'downgraded' to Business, Yes its an error in terms of price, Yes we know Qantas will email in 72hrs.
Unsure whats far fetched?… I'm genuinely curious and ties in with keeping my status. When you buy any Qantas fare and upgrade it say with points, you are always credited the original booked fare rules.

    • After re-booking into Business looks like its 45 status + 180 status + 180 status = 405 in total in my case.
      Hmmmmmm…

  • +1

After the dramas, I guess we’re not flying economy 🤪🤪. Okay kids, move to business class for your hide and seek. ☺️☺️

  • +3

Nice to see many rich Ozbargainers able to fly business class for $4299 return to the USA. Guess all the high yield investments have paid off.

    • +3

I think it’s reasonably attainable for those who would travel overseas anyway. Cut $100 a week of spend and it’s done

      • I travel business class, but I wouldn't do so if I had to cut $100 a week just to afford them.

      • Cost of living and flying business. Good one brah

    • Excessive sell offs of AMG

  • Anyone know, What's the normal sale price for business class for LAx?
    Thanks

    • +1

Normal non-sale business prices I am seeing are around $12500 return

      • +1

Pre-Covid was around $6500. Haven’t been keeping an eye lately.

        • Looks like there recently was a sale around $7500 to LAX so I believe that is the new sales price.

    • +1

Go to qantas, put in your travel dates, get the price. If it’s not a sale period, put in dates in another period.
I took a look (out of curiosity) yesterday, found business return LAX in February for $6K.

      • January and February are the absolute cheapest months to fly to LA. If you punch in from April to August I don't think those low prices will appear.

        • I can see ANA or Asiana for $6000-6200 in April - July (downside is it takes around 24 hours one way with a connecting flight)

  • +1

What a win for those who managed to book. $4500 return business class to USA.

How many points + tax for a classic reward flight one way business class from SYD / MEL to LAX / JFK?

    • +1

Plus $200 off Qantas bookings if you have the AmEx deal. My MEL-SYD-LAX return was $4146 with the AmEx offer.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/862808

      • I had the same plan but ran out of time!

        Well done

        • I did the $25 per ticket pay-later method, so nothing complete yet. But I did get emails saying they would offer J to me.

          • @DSOTM: Any idea if the $25 will get refunded if we don't go ahead with the booking?

  • +1

Awesome result team!! Business is a still an amazing deal :D

  • Just received the email outlining the option to cancel fare for a full refund or do nothing to keep flights as business.

Interesting that no date was set by which you had to respond by to opt for the refund. Might mull this over for a while before deciding.

  • Can you split-pay this offer with two credit cards? A different card for two passengers?

    • -1

      Nope

      • +2

Just checked with Qantas; yes you can. Just use the "Pay-per-person" option at checkout.

  • +1

Now that I have been rebooked in Business. Is it worth it to take my chance for first class upgrade for 61,600 points/pax? I'm a Bronze.

    • Have you had confirmation and etickets in J issued? I've only received the same initial email as everyone else so far.

      • +2

I received confirmation and etickets rebooked as a Business Sale fare (I)

        Dear Link90,

We contacted you on 23nd August, regarding pricing error on Qantas.com that resulted in an incorrect fare being displayed for your booking ABC123.

An updated ticket and itinerary has been sent to you which is for the same dates as booked for travel in our Business cabin. Any future date changes are subject to our standard fare rules, and any applicable fare difference.

If you are proceeding with this offer there is no action required from you.

If you do not wish to proceed with this offer, you can request a full refund by replying to this email directly confirming that you wish to cancel and refund this booking. We will then process a refund to the original form of payment. Most refunds are processed within 7 days, however can take up to 4 weeks, depending on your financial institution.

We apologise for this error and thank you for your understanding.

        • What’s their email?
So I add it to safe emails cause think mine goes to junk

        • Hey link90, can you share whats the email address. I havent received any communication after being offered business, and I surely dont want to fly anymore. Would be great if you can share that email address so I can initiate refund. Thanks.

      • +1

Yes, rebooked as (I) as well.

    • +1

No harm taking a chance - no cost- but the chances of a Bronze getting that upgrade are very low.

  • +4

It's a good deal for business return but then you realise you're going to LA 😂

  • +4

Looks like you can also request to upgrade to First from Business for points.
It’s 61,000 per person, per way. So for those who have lots of QFF to play with, 122,000 points may get you First class, return 🔥🔥

    • Were you actually able to request a points upgrade? The option appears to be greyed out in my booking. You can click Request an Upgrade but only lets you proceed with a Cash + Points Upgrade.

      • I was able to request a points only upgrade, on SYD-LAX and back.

      • Yep, points upgrade requested. No cash.

        • do you know how much 122,000 points end up being? i was considering this!

  • +3
    • Mate of mine was one of the 300 bookings, can confirm he received the business class or refund offer as well

Not that I would have booked, but I'm embarrassed I didn't notice the deal.

    • Nah, Thats a huge saving - think how many eneloops it would give you?

  • Interesting that they are talking about doing the right thing. I only watched this flight review yesterday which showed someone "Downgraded, Not Refunded" from Business Class to Economy and experience with rude employees: https://youtu.be/2REIYTwyIHo?si=aP-KEk1PTcV8-_nc

  • +1

It's interesting to see how many people think that Qantas has lost out on this "error". The thousands of dollars that Qantas will bank, because of this "error" whereas most of those seats would have gone empty will have Qantas celebrating!

    • +1

Time to start a class action for bait & switch!

    • When are seats to the USA empty? There's a reason biz fares are so high.

  • Qantas: As a gesture of good will, we’re rebooking customers in business class at no additional cost. Customers also have the option of a full refund.

    Still a good deal lol

  • How did i miss this?! Returns ozbargain membership

  • Wow, this is even being discussed on Bloomberg: https://youtu.be/F9mlDhPv9wg?si=gmWGLnBciz77q0IJ&t=4104

    • +2

Yep, excellent marketing! The amount of free advertising they got from this far outweighs the the $2k or so discount for 200 business class fares!

  • Big savings on business class flights…. towards paying the 20% tips for dining out there haha

  • -1

Instead of rebokking my flight as per the second email, qantas sent me an email this morning to pay $100,000 or forefeit the holding deposit.

" payment is not made by the payment deadline, the booking will be cancelled and the holding guarantee per person will be forfeited."

Spoke to two qantas consultants both of them said I need to pay $100,000. The consultant i spoke with this morning said, she well get back to me in the evening.

With only less than 300 bookings they should have honoured the first class. Qantas would have got more free advertisements by doing so.

    • +1

Why does Qantas, who have a monopoly as Australia's only full service airline, need any publicity?

      • Now there are many alternatives with better service. I recently tried to book an overseas trip with qantas, the fare was around $3,200 . But ended up booking witb Cathy for $1,700.

        https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-02-22/qantas-half-year-prof…

        • Not an Australian airline, which is an important factor for some, esp people who chase status and purchase first/biz tix. This goodwill would be irrelevant for economy fliers and not sure it would make a difference to anyone purchasing flights imo. Wouldn't make a difference to me other than feeling disappointed I didn't purchase in the first place.

          • @bargainshooter: Agree. But how other international airlines are able to operate at lower cost? The expenses are pretty much the same except the executives of international airlines are not getting bonuses as Qantas execs.
As an Australian I prefer to fly qantas, also admire Qantas' safety records.

    • I had a different experience. I booked 2 x MEL-LAX for $8,697 during the price error. I used the $25 pay-later option. The next day the "pay now" price jumped to $46,000!! This had to be paid by midnight today. I rang Qantas today and after a lot of checking with supervisors they offered to rebook us on J at the original error price or they could refund the $50 pre-payment. When It came down to the wire I didn't have the readies so have cancelled and got the 50 bucks back. You gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em :(

      • I had 4 calls already no resolution at all. According to the email, i don't have to do anything they will sort that out. Waiting game

        • You would have passed the deadline to pay the balance? Is the booking still showing on your QFF account?

          • +1

@DSOTM: yes, still shows 100K and pay by Aug 29th

  • Qantas is playing games not to honor the tickets

Now they are saying we can't honor the ticketa since you opted for "book now pay later" and we can rebook you in economy

    • Just cancel and go elsewhere/fly different airline

      • Thats what Qantas wants. Unfortunately their tactics is tarnishing their reputation for sure. I am documenting every communication and planning post my experience on social media. Possitive and negative.

        • Sure, do that.

But IMO, if you didn't need to travel to USA, why bother anyway

        • +2

Only with a few. They already got the press coverage for it, so upsetting a handful of customers makes no difference!

  • I was planning to when I came across this fare. Initially I thought it was a sale price that they typically offer for one or two seats at very low price, also heard that qantas is discontinuing first class in some international flights.
So I had hope that they will honour the tickets.

  • Did anyone receive $25 refund from pay later option?

    • Nope not yet, pretty poor by Qantas

    • I was very sceptical about the bad reviews about qantas. From my experience, I can confirm that those negative
      reviews are genuine.
I think they have the intention of keeping that $25.

  • +2

I had raised a case with qantas to investigate why we were not offered the business class tickets as per eamil. Now they have come back saying passenger name mismatch, and I do not have consent from the rest of the passengers (my family) to investigate the issue.

Does Q.A.N.T.A.S: means ,Questionable Actions, Neglecting Trust, Abandoning Service ?

    Qantas is such a loser

Thank you for contacting Qantas Customer Care regarding your request for a refund of the holding fee on booking.

We appreciate you sending us the attachment to your claim.

I understand that you made a booking under Book Now, Pay Later and paid AUD 25.00 for the holding fee.

Concerning your booking, payment must be made in full on or before midnight (11:59pm) of the due date advised at the time of booking, and if you don't pay the fare in full on or before the due date, your booking will be cancelled.

Moreover, please be advised that while your booking is on hold, the total ticket price may change due to amendments in taxes, fees and carrier charges, as well as fare adjustments and the reason that you’ve seen the price increase to $20,000 upon logging in to your account.

Having said that, we regret to inform you that we are unable to fulfill your request for the refund of AUD 25.00.

    • +1

      Wow

    • I'd raised a complaint. Here is what the customer service came back with "we are unable to assist you further as this is regarding future-dated flights"

Thank you for contacting us regarding your recent call to our Contact Centre.

We have looked into your case and we do apologise for the inconvenience caused. We are sorry to learn that our staff were unable to assist you with your request. However, we are unable to assist you further as this is regarding future-dated flights, we can only assist if it is past-dated travels, in cases whereby passengers are not satisfied with the service provided to them on their flight, downgrades, reimbursements and/or compensations. Therefore, you will have to contact our Reservations team on 13 13 13 for assistance and we do apologise if this was not the outcome you had anticipated.

Please be advised that when we advise you to contact our Reservations team, it is not that we care less, it is because here at the Customer Care Department we do not handle or make changes for any future-dated flights.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write to us and we look forward to welcoming you onboard soon.

      Kind regards,

      • That is beyond ridiculous.

  • I got my 2 x$25 pay-later deposits refunded to AmEx the day after I phoned customer support, just before the book-or-lose-it deadline. I must have had a nice rep on the phone.
