Care to elaborate? Are you an owner?

          Care to elaborate?

You haven't yet elaborated on how or why.

I've owned an MG4 Xpower for nearly a year. Great car. Highly recommend. Always love a revhead revving next to me, and me barely touching the pedal and watching them disappear in my rear vision mirror.

If I plant it the 0-100 in 3 seconds is fun too.

          • +1

@Ruddaga: Did you seriously just round 3.8 seconds down to 3 lmao

            • @cheekymonkey97: Oh sorry was typing on my phone. 3.8 seconds.

You'd be surprised how many cars have beaten me with that 0.8 difference though (spoiler - None yet ;D )

          • @Ruddaga: 3.8 seconds actually.

            • @Boodek: Sorry was typing on my phone so was just easier to say 3 secs.

Funnily enough when I show people the launch mode and we hit hundred in that 3.8 seconds, the scream they make as their butt hole clenches is probably not going to be too different to cars that do it in 3 secs vs mine :)

Bad news for you then, Kia is about to release their China made EV5 here

          • @BargainMe: But they are still too greedy to price it like Chinese cars

        • +6

I'm poor but never paid twice also haven't encountered any issues yet

Maybe ya just a sh*t magnet?

        • +3

Are you a KIA sales? KIA has nothing to do with the word 'good quality', only fair. Apart from regular service, I've been to dealer 3 times in 1.2yr to fix defect. For the old mazda3 i replaced. I never have to been back due to defect for the entire 11yrs of ownership.

        • +5

“I am in automotive trade” sounds like you are a sales person for a competitor that has been losing market share to BYD.

I have test driven Kia ev6 /9 and Tesla before buying an atto3. If Kia has got their shit together and release Kia ev5 on time to the market I would have considered it.

At the ~50k price point, the Atto 3 is a no brainer. If you want a model y you should wait for the juniper version (not available in au until after 2024), if you want a performance car you should go for Kia ev6 (faster car but less comfortable and less feature and higher price). If you want a big posh family car for for Kia ev9. If you are like me just need a mid size suv for comfortable urban driving, again atto 3 is a no brainer.

The only advantage that Tesla has is the software is better and the mobile app has more features. But BYD is constantly updating its app, and I am happy with what the current version of BYD app for a cheaper price point.

BYD dealership can be a pain to deal with. Not because of their friendliness or eagerness to help, but because their lack of knowledge on new technology. I did the car firmware upgrade myself, but that’s me being tech savvy, I don’t need to be spoon fed.

god damn you're hilarious! Korean EVs and Korean batteries are one of the most recalled products in EVs. every one knows about LG chem battery fires not going to post the links here but lets go with KIA EV.

        Are you an owner?

        Don't be silly 🤣

I remember back in the day when Hyundai was a new company here, and every un-informed idiot bagged them.

My brother got the Excel. Paid extra to upgrade from the 4sp manual to a 5sp. That was a brilliant little car. Took heaps of abuse - he was a driving instructor - had plenty of power and many features other manufacturers reserved for their premium models.

I'm not blowing smoke up the Chinese manufacturers butt. They could be rubbish, but you can be sure that the vast majority of people who write stuff like @Hillagood have no real world experience. People that have had real experience, even if brief, like @Lucille Bluth tend to be forthcoming on why they have an opinion, rather than just spewing 1 line posts.

        • +3

          Excel = classic

        • +2

But but a close family member has one 😅

        • +8

My grandpa was a mechanic, til the day he died he claimed Japanese cars were all junk and only Aussie/American cars were good.

He also spent about 90% of his time keeping his old ford falcon running, it was a pile of crap.

Granted, he was a pretty racist old fart, he’d be rolling in his grave to know I drive a Chinese made electric car.

          • +4

            @freefall101:

til the day he died he claimed Japanese cars were all junk

Yep. It's always the case when a new brand arrives. Everyone calls them rubbish.

It was Japanese cars, then Korean cars, now Chinese.

I guarantee in 10 years time the people telling us not to buy Chinese will be telling us not to buy <insert new country here> cars, and stick with Chinese.

The early Chinese cars were rubbish, and it saddens me somewhat that the Chinese companies didn't do much to try and hide that. Great Wall Motors renaming to GWM for example.

The world has repeatedly under-estimated the Chinese, and it will bite us on the butt in the future, as they will inevitably streak ahead in the tech fields.

Honestly worried we may get Chinese ev car tarrifs 12 months much like solar panels, seen reports Germany and parts of USA are upset at imports. Elon funding trump.

We have solar panels tarrifs depute the fact we don't have 1 company in Australia making them, only assembling them from Chinese parts.

    • +3

you want to fact check your fact?

    • +1

We don't have any local car manufacturers to protect with tarrifs like Germany and USA

    • Honestly worried we may get Chinese ev car tarrifs 12 months much like solar panels, seen reports Germany and parts of USA are upset at imports. Elon funding Trump. We have solar panels tarrifs depute the fact we don't have 1 company in Australia making them, only assembling them from Chinese parts.

We do have 1 company making solar panels in Australia https://tindosolar.com.au but the appetite is to build up local manufacturing so it's entirely possible tariffs can be introduced especially if we are reaching rooftop saturation. Still don't think it's likely though as it would make solar farming much more expensive AND we would be competing with US and their inflation reduction act.

However, I don't understand why you are concerned about possible tariffs for vehicles. It makes no sense why we would introduce tariffs on a product we don't make anymore. This seems like a totally illogical fear.

    • +1

Sorry. Explain why we are going to get tarrifs on Chinese EVs?

  • Too bad their servicing is a giant ripoff, will lose the savings compared to a tesla in a few years

    • +4

You know you don't have to use them for servicing don't you?

    • +1

The guy showed me the schedule and cost. Isn't too bad, is it? A few hundred dollars. No?

      • +2

$165 for every other 10k, then alternating $545 and $765 in between. A lot for an EV

        • +4

Not saying it's cheap but it's not exactly bank breaking. I've got a Seal through a Novated lease but the costs are much less than I pay for my ICE.

          km price
          20,000 $165
          40,000 $545
          60,000 $165
          80,000 $765
          100,000 $165
          120,000 $562
          140,000 $165
          160,000 $765
          180,000 $165

  • Heard that some BYDs are unable to charge at Tesla Charging Stations. Is that a thing of the past now?

    • +1

The 2024 version (at least for Atto3) can be used at Tesla charging stations. The older 2023 version needs firmware update I think.

      For seal

      https://thedriven.io/2024/06/10/byd-seal-successfully-charge…

    • Just their latest superchargers the Atto 3 2022 are having issues with apparently it's a hardware resistor 'issue' either Tesla or BYD are playing funny games there, Tesla A/C chargers are fine otherwise. Unless you live in an apartment or drive 400km a day you/road trip hardly use their superchargers at their $0.80/kw rate. Honestly it's not a deal breaker.

As a 2022 Atto 3 owner 99% of my charging needs are done at home with the included 8amp trickle charger, I will look for a permanent solution when I get a 2nd BEV.

  • +1

if anyone needs DLM, these guys have the accessories: https://dzelectrical.com.au/products/caro?variant=4848225039…

    • BYD charger can't do that?

      • Yes, as per the manual that comes with it. It appears to be a re-branded Caro unit and supports many of the things the Caro branded one does including dynamic load balancing with a CT clamp.
Also supports OCPP 1.6, with connection via Wifi or Ethernet.

    • I inquired about the CT clamp with these guys a few weeks ago and they have gone above and beyond to check compatibility for the EVSwitch unit and have been able to source a compatible CT clamp directly form the manufacturer.

  • Noice! Free wall charger is definitely a nice incentive.

  • -1

drove the seal today. The over decorated showroom can't sway the poor service and car

    • What was wrong with the service and car?

      • -2

They hire poor quality staff and the car software is just dismal. Watching the poor test drivers inability to reverse park the car is definitely a highlight.

Those loyal to China and BYD should definitely buy the car. As well as any Elon haters.

        • +2

Software is fine. It has been upgraded. It isn't a Tesla standard, but better than most other car makers. Not sure why they can't park the car, there are sensors and cameras for days on that thing. Maybe they get too frazzled by all the fast beeping that happens .

          • @serpserpserp: The reverse camera is so low compared to the height of the car, it’s throws you off when reversing

        • +3

Seen many reviews of this car and its software seems fine generally. Not sure what other car brands you are comparing with to call this dismal.

        • +1

want to elaborate? I've only heard good things about it from friends that have one. not Tesla level polish but no concerns about buggy software. someone struggling to operate a new unfamiliar car sounds pretty standard if that's all it takes to amuse you fair enough I'd hate to see them try to change gear on the touchscreen on a Tesla though

          • @May4th: The touchy brakes, the lack of torque, the dozen of cameras misplaced cameras and the poor software to go with it. Unnecessary number of buttons for the same function. Good exterior and interior design but that’s the only thing I can praise about the seal. The poorly designed dash screen which nobody can see. Excessive number of knobs on the steering wheel. Obstructed view of the outside environment. Hard to like for 54k. The staff member tells me he likes the car owned it for 4 months and tells me he drives 1K a month. He

Then my normal argument, small 7kw inverter.

            • +2

@sunnyc: fair enough, BYD is known for their chaotic interior design and that's meant to be the toned down version from the Atto 3. Each to their own, it is quite subjective. I disliked the lack of screen in front of steering wheel and having to do everything on a touchscreen in the Tesla but the software experience is miles ahead. It's like Apple vs Android

        • Car software is responsive enough. Also has functional voice command (not as good as ChatGPT 4o voice but better than Siri). Comes with standard stuff eg navigation and Spotify, as well as wireless CarPlay and android auto. Amazon music can be installed, as well as stingray karaoke for the kids. Sound system and speakers are above average (I’d say better than model y). If you are game you could sideload other android apps (latest firmware 1.8.0 has banned this so you will need to do some tech hackery around the restrictions).

There is short cut (3 fingers swipe) to control air condition temperature and fan speed.

I am saying this as an Elon’s fan and I had my eye set on Tesla model y especially after the price cut. But I don’t want to pay extra for the Tesla software add-on and I doubt Tesla would improve their iOS integration based on Elon’s position for Apple / google AI situation.

The car software is not an issue for BYD (the service staff is)

          • +1

@ctan7: The Tesla software is miles ahead, BYD software I would compare to a Lenovo tablet and not even a Samsung tablet and far from a iPad.
I’ve never needed CarPlay or android play for driving because the Tesla software is adequate so you would need to question if it’s worth purchasing a vehicle that requires a phones software to be operate.

            • +1

@sunnyc: Yeah I am on completely opposite. I have so many things personalised on my phone I’d rather have CarPlay instead of set up another device (car).

I do agree Tesla software is better, the mobile app is also better. But I am not a fan of the Tesla auto pilot addon. Overall for me atto 3 (car features, ie sun roof with shades) won me over.

The one thing I wanted is sentry mode for BYD but apparently it will be included on the future

            • @sunnyc: Also. Touchy brakes and lack of torque. Do you recall which BYD drive mode you were on ? Eco / normal / sport. And the setting for the regenerative braking, was it on low / high ?

Those settings made a huge difference to my driving experience.

              • @ctan7: Yeah normal. Don’t need to drive an electric car in sport to get torque. The idea of electric car is instant torque. Driven 10+ different e brands. Amongst the least enjoyable at low speeds

Regenerative brakes is not the issue.

                • @sunnyc: I’ve driven the Atto 3 and seal but if I was going to buy a vehicle, it would be most likely sealion.

The masquerade of a flashy vehicle that doesn’t perform like it looks is pointless. Function over form

                  • @sunnyc: I've test-driven the Atto 3 and sea lion 6. Didn't like the interior of Atto 3 but suspension and handling was fine. Sea Lion was also very zippy for a large car

                    • @May4th: suspension and handling is fine in all byd.

  • Not sure if targeted but I also got a message from Dandenong BYD of a $1000 cash back on any BYD model along with the charger

    • Still 60k drive away on the website. No charger included.

  • I drive an Atto3 and I have no problems with recommending the car to anyone. Obviously you should test drive the car and decide for yourself whether it meets your individual needs. For me it did and that's why I'm recommending it.

    • Atto3 well be more successful if they reduce extended range <$39k on road price.

      • +1

A car would be more successful if its price was lower? Well it doesn’t take a genius to figure that out but given that’s the MG4 price and the Atto 3 is a bigger car, why would they lower the Atto below the Dolphin?

        • -2

I expect dolphin to be <$29k. And seagull to be <19k

  • Bloody rip off if you ask me - they should bundle this into the package you receive with the car.

    • They do. Did Tesla bundle one ?

  • +2

BYD needs to provide longer charging cable, 5m instead of the too short 3m, with this free charger.
You can buy this charger separately for $499 and it includes a longer 7m cable.

  • +2

Just put down a deposit for a Sealion 6 at BYD Brighton Vic. They were offering a $1000 rebate as well as the 7kw charger.

  • The amount of people that recommend the Atto 3 is astonishing. The interior looks like it was designed for children, not a mature adult.

    • +2

I’d argue the Atto was a decent alternative when it was $15k cheaper than the Tesla. Now not at all with the minor difference. It feels at least one class smaller than the Tesla if not two (eg Kluger vs Corolla Cross not a RAV4).

      • If you have driven a Model Y and compared it to the Atto 3. Apart from the bigger boot, the Attto 3 is much more comfortable ride.

    • Like always been said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people like the design, other people don't. It's subjective.

    • part of the reason i bought it was that my kids love the interior especially the guitar strings. So yeah, maybe it is being designed for children, and that's fine by me as a family man

  • +2

When I test drove it last year, I found the atto was really bouncy and it made me feel a bit car sick. There wasn't much boot space (actually felt smaller than an i30) and the back seats got really hot - there was a lot of radiant heat coming through the roof even with the mesh in place and the ac couldn't keep up with the summer, the rear passenger was complaining their head was getting really hot. The interior was full of a mixture of hard and synthetic plastics which I found quite sweaty and poked into my legs so I couldn't get comfortable. I really wanted the atto because of the price and the ability to run an ac cable off it during power outages or camping so it was quite a disappointment

  • RRP legit as Anaconda

  • Over to you Tesla!!!!!!!!!!!!!
