If people are going to ask again, please have a read on the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL deal:

    • The ETC can’t be paid with gift cards, this is managed by Telstra for your final invoice
    • It’s a $1400 off gift card provided to you to purchase your MacBook Air
    • The CIS will still show the $800 gift card: This is what Telstra sees on their end, not the $1400 gift card provided to you
    • With this deal, the M3 Air 256GB will have a final cost of ~$1264; M2 around ~$1064
    • +3

Presumably you have an invoice at full price for the Macbook air for tax deduction purposes too..

      • +1

Also full GST if you happen to be going overseas in the near future.

    • Normally ignorantly argue rather than ask ;)

A MBA is worth a $1000 less than what apple are asking for! I bought an Lenovo 16" laptop with an AMD 8/16 16gb 512gb for <$1100 delivered with a bigger battery for 12hr continous use web/video use, way more just for web surfing. Its slim, its fast it lasts for ages and with steam and the amd gpu I have games too. I cant recomend the qualcom new x86 windows machines but the Lenovo for the money kicks ass! You can do better for less now and ironically, im typing this on my M2 MBP as the Lenovos in my bedroom as its wifi reach is better than the MBP

Oh for <$1200 I could have a 1tb HD and for under <$1500 I could have gotten a 32tb and OLED screen, kicking apples ass up and down the street!

      • +1

Circle jerk for spec whores. Ready, go!

But yes, Apple's prices are ridiculous. Enjoy MS putting their ads deep into your throat continuously.

And I will enjoy Apple deliberately engineering obsolescence into their machines by under-speccing RAM and storage, while also ignoring known hardware errors for generations of machines, and demanding 30% of Patreon contributions, if signed up with the iPhone, because giving them about 45% gross margin and even more on services isn't enough for them, while they bow to despotic regimes, at the same time preaching love, acceptance, and environmental credentials.

There are no winners. Circle jerk over. My heart's not in it anymore.

  • Cancellation fee?

    • +3

The same old same old ~$766.66 since it’s pro rata as you’ve paid for the first month

      • What if you stayed for 9 months and paid $891 then cancel. How much do you need to against the voucher fee?

        • -1

          13 x 33.33 =433.29 as I read the CIS

    • -1

      Full amount

  • -2

If you cancel or move to a lower cost plan then you'll need to pay a Voucher Repayment Fee pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term

    • +13

I just literally wrote a whole summary above 🤦‍♂️

  • Terms and condition:
The Voucher Repayment Fee is a pro-rata amount, equal to the total amount of
the base Voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by the months (or part months)
remaining in your Voucher Term. For example, if received a voucher with a 24-
    month Voucher Term, then in:
    (a) Month 1: You will need to repay 23/24 of the Voucher you received;
    (b) Month 12: You will need to repay 11/24 of the Voucher you received; and
    (c) Month 23: You will need to repay 1/24 of the Voucher you received.

So it's full amount I believe

    • +1

Not the full amount of $1400, it’s the $800 instead as this is what gets reported back to Telstra

      • I found terms and conditions via website, so not sure

        • +3

I was talking to the OzB JB/TGG employee earlier about it

        • Do Not apply 'Voucher value. Apply 'Voucher Repayment Fee' CIS shows Maximum Voucher Repayment Fee is $800.

  • +2

i found this telstra page with all details:
    https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…

  • +2

can someone dumb this down for me like your explaining the cost and process to a 5 year old

    • +10

      My understanding is:

      • You sign up for a 24-month TGG/Telstra plan
      • You receive a gift card ($1,400)
      • You purchase your MacBook of choice, redeeming said gift card
      • You cancel the plan, paying out the first month ($99) and cancellation fee ($766.59)

So to calculate the final amount, take the price of the MacBook and minus $1,400, then add $865.6.

      • +1

        Correct!

You could also then return the MacBook within 30 days and pocket a $1400 gift card, or better yet have it refunded onto your credit card if the staff member isn't paying close attention to how you paid.

        • But if you return the Macbook aint you still paying first month ($99) and cancellation fee ($766.59) which means your gaining $1400 in store credit for $865.59?

and its probably less value then that because JB cards do go on 15% sale at times

          • @smeng: Correct, or $1400 back on your credit card for $865.59 spend (if the staff member just has you put the full refund back on card)

            • @SirFrankGrimes: so if we assume 15% of $1400 GC is worth $1190 and if we get refund direct to CC it would be 1190-865.59 = $324.41 profit is that correct?

            • @SirFrankGrimes: refund goes to gift card + any card payment

              • @Feeblely: On the odd occasion, they’ll just refund you the whole thing onto your credit card. It happened to me recently at JB for a similar situation

        • How soon did you return the macbook and cancel the mobile plan?

        • Just tried to return my Macbook Air in The Good Guys Auburn and they said that they can’t refund the $1400 giftcard + any card payment. They can only return $800 worth of giftcard + remaining card payment.

Are they f*ing with me or how can i ensure a full refund?

          • +1

@tukangbakso: It’s best to either let the time goes by first or sell your MacBook on marketplace as it’s still an active deal and most stores are probs aware of the $1400 gift card being used towards the purchase

      • +1

thank you for the excellent write up !!

        so for example

        $2399 for a M3 16gb - $1400 gift card = $999 payable(can you use GG Giftcard for this portion) + first month ($99) and cancellation fee ($766.59) = $1864.59? is this correct?

and if you use GG GC for the $999 portion it becomes even cheaper?

        • can you use GG Giftcard for this portion

          also wondering the same thing

      • +5

So the net effect is $1400 - ($99 + $766.59) = $534.41 discount off the Macbook price and one month's Telstra plan usage?

  • Damn I hope they bring back the IPad deal I missed out 😭😭

  • can you use the $1,400 gift card on something else like an iPad instead? Will they know?

    • +1

"$1400 off the purchase price of any MacBook Air M2 or M3"

      as per here

I believe we're locked into using it on a laptop. I'll report back after I visit a store.

      • +2

Just return the laptop and buy an iPad. 30 days refund policy.

  • I signed up to this deal in 2022, (ending this year) and purchased an appliance with the gift card. I at the time didnt know of this trick to cancel and just pay the base gc cancellation, and decided to keep the plan.
However, when i go in mytelstra app, and look at the cancellation cost, it takes into account the $99/month for remaoning months.
Have the terms and conditions changed since then ?

    • this is getting confusing now… either just the repayment fee of $800 or $800 + remaining months….
do you have the ozbargain link to the 2022 deal?

    • -1

Plans in 2022 weren’t up front like they are now. They were contracts with a cancellation fee and requirement to pay remaining months.

  • this is tempting. hopefully it'll work as the above description!

  • Its funny, such a damn big loop hole on this deal, and they never notice about that and let us keep doing this ???

  • Some stores have started to decline gift cards as you have exceeded what they call more refunds and cancellations. probably best to keep a couple of accounts in hand.

  • +1

It's a deal only when the MBA is on sale for $200-$300 off the RRP.

    • do they do price match/beats?

      • This is what I need to know before jumping in

  • +2

Just went to the store and got Macbook Air M3 512GB 16GB Midnight Black. Also switched electricity from AGL Value Saver to Good Guys AGL Value saver which got me further 70$ off. So final price 929$.

    • -1
      • $99+$800 cancelation fee=$1828 . They often go on sale for that price.
      • Can you provide any examples? RRP $2399, Edu $2249. Best I know of was Apple edu GC offer bringing price to approx 2k.

  • Legend @BargainsGrabber. Just went in-store now and purchased an M3 256GB for $399 + $99

The lady at TGG told me to tell all my friends about this deal haha

    • +2

Couldn't you price-match it as well?

      • Goddamn. Time to hand in my Ozbargain membership

No one mentioned it was cheaper elsewhere in the comments. Didn't even think of it

      • +1

You could but depends on the sales assistant

One of my local JB allows it, but the other doesn’t

    • is that the price for the 8gb?

      • Yep. Not sure they have the 256GB / 16GB in stores? Would have bought it if they did

    • Don’t you get hit with the cancellation fee too? Unless you didn’t cancel.

      • Yep, that's the next step. Upfront cost in store though is the $1,799 laptop - $1,400 gift card + $99 first month

  • does anyone know what invoice they provide? if it includes the $1400 giftcard value in the total?

also for a BYO deal, do we need to have an existing phone number or can we ask for a new one?

    • +1

The invoice shows a full priced Macbook with $1,400 of the total paid via gift cards.

30%+ off on top of everything else in tax deductions depending on your income bracket

      • how do you get the % off in tax deductions?

        • Assuming you use the laptop for work, it's similar to what you can claim for a mobile phone.

30% is too high really, as you need to apportion the deduction for your private use percentage, but laptops can be fully deducted over two years so for an example it'd be:

          $1,800 laptop x 50% x Work Use Percentage (eg 80%) x 10 months / 12 for your FY25 deduction = $600 deduction / $180 tax saving at 30% bracket

          • +1

@LeDangles: Whilst this sounds good, it’s not technically right.

The tax deduction is on what you have incurred not what is on the invoice. You haven’t incurred $1,800 so the claim would only be based on what you are out of pocket.

  • Has anyone been able to successfully price match prior prior to receiving the 1.4k discount?

    • -1

Wasn’t hard for me to do with iPad version of this deal

  • Pull the trigger and bought M3 256gb last night it took them over an hour to apply the $1400 discount. Now the question is when people jumping on chat and canceling the plan ..? Straight away or wait for a month or so…?

    • Did you get it priced match?

  • +1

Yes m3 8gb/256 for $1699 instead of $1799 . But all the retailer drop there price to $1699 today anyway

  • +5

Good Guys told me that they couldn’t price match the M3 MacBook if I was also going to be taking the Telstra offer. Annoying but still a huge saving. Cancelled Telstra plan via the live chat nil issues, can confirm cancellation fee is $766.60.

    • Chat thru Telstra app?

      • Yes through the Telstra app

  • +7

Walked into TGG. Spoke with someone who went through the process with me. I also asked if they could price match Officeoworks ($1449 instead of $1599 at TGG) which they said they'll do after sign up.

    45mins later

    I got the Macbook Air 13inch M2 256GB for
$99 first month of telstra plan
    + $49 Price matched ($1449 - $1400 voucher)
+ $766.6 (Will cancel Telstra plan after I've used it a few days cus data)

    = Total $914.6 for a $1559 RRP Macbook
    $644.4 savings

    @bargainsgrabber cheers for the deal
Read through comments and @shane000 reminded me of price match to save an extra $150

Also. Voucher has to be used in store that the plan was bought at on the same day.

    • +1

      @BargainsGrabber
      @shane000

    • 1599 RRP* Which makes it $694.4 Savings

      • And if you use discounted gift cards + claim the purchase price on tax, you’ll save even more

    • That’s excellent price @Endynos. What is the TRS-claimable amount in this case?

  • +2

    Update:

    Purchased Apple MacBook Air 13" M3 8GB 256GB (price matched jb-hifi @ $1697)

Paid $396 today, owing $766 to cancel plan)

Total: $1,162 (saving $335 if compared to ATL of $1497)

    feelsgoodman.jpg

  • Anyone managed to price match with Triforce for the 15” 16/512 m3 variant?

I was also told the ETC will be voucher + 23 months of phone plan fees.

    • +1

Never heard of Triforce - unlikely they'd pricematch tbh.

Refer to here regarding plan termination.

  • +1

Signed up with jb hifi. Went to cancel on the jb app. Thr rep says 766 and remaining balance of device will appear as lump sum on th3 next bill (if applicable). Has anyone got thr same from jb?

    • Remaining balance of device? You’ll have to be more specific. They can only charge you what’s on the critical information summary.

      • +1

Thats what the chat said. They didnt specify. I havent cancwlled it yet and said will havw a think and get back. Wondering if anyone else got told thr same.

        • Aww man please don’t tell me I’m stuck with a new air that I didn’t need and a phone plan I didn’t want :( . I too signed up today thru good guys but have yet to cancelled thru chat ,

          • @asher23: Legally, you can only be changed what’s specified. Just make them tell you the cancellation cost. If it differs to the critical information summary, tell them that.

          • @asher23: Try your luck

        • Hi, I think you can try cancel from Telstra chat. Last time, I signed up with JB Hifi and then cancelled via Telstra chat without any issue.

    • Confused as to why you're signing up with JB with this deal is with The Good Guys?
