Tonight on NAS Monday, I'm back with another NAS Mini PC with multiple CPU options and this one stands out by offering 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD slots, rather than SATA slots found in many NAS drives. This makes it a great choice for anyone looking for faster network storage, running VMs, Docker, or even using it as a media player.

On the listing there's also the Intel N150 for US$170.96 (~A$275.56) and the Intel i3-N305 for US$248.56 (~A$400.64) on the listing. Comparison below.

Other features include a large heatsink ontop for the SSDs, a fan cooled CPU with copper heatsink, 1x DDR5 SODIMM 4800MHz RAM slot, Intel UHD Graphics, Dual HDMI 2.0 (4K@60Hz) output, Dual Intel i226-V 2.5G LAN ports, Dual USB 3.2 10Gbps ports and an M.2 B Key slot for WiFi 6/7.

Unfortunately due to CPU constraints the M.2 NVMe slots are limited to 1 PCIe lane (x1) instead of 4 PCIe lanes (x4), however this is still faster than having mechanical SATA HDDs.

Intel N150 4 cores, 4 threads 6M 3.60 GHz 6W Intel UHD Graphics 24EUs
Intel Core i3-N305 8 cores, 8 threads 6M 3.80 GHz 15W Intel UHD Graphics 32EUs

Other tips:

If you're going to install an M.2 WiFi card you must use an Intel card like the AX200, AX210, BE200 or BE202. CNVIO cards like the AX201 and other brands (i.e. MediaTek) are not supported.

For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

Doesn't come with memory at that price point, for anyone's who might impulsively buy this.

Otherwise pretty nifty, I like it. I would impulsively buy it if they weren't x1 (lane/s?).

  • This would have been exactly what I’ve been searching for if it had 10gb ethernet. Is there anyway I can get faster ethernet on it I wonder?

  • Doesn't support gen4 SSDs?

What does that mean, that if you fit gen4 SSDs they only run at gen3 speed? Or that gen4 SSDs don't work? If its the latter its a real problem as gen3 SSDs are not longer manufactured or available.

Yes, I know the M.2 standard has forward and backward compatibility designed in, but I have a motherboard that works with gen3 SSDs, but won't boot with a gen4 SSD. Its not supposed to happen, but it does. The manufacturer's tech support simply denies it, and tells me I have to look harder for a gen4 SSD that works. As if I have the ability they do to search around all the brands and models they do.

It should also be noted that while it supports 4x M.2 NVMe gen3 SSDs, it only supports them in x1 mode. What is a bit over the speed of an M.2 SATA drive. Which isn't as good as if it supported them in x4 mode, but is better than only supporting M.2 SATA drives, because M.2 SATA drives are rapidly becoming unavailable.

    • What does that mean, that if you fit gen4 SSDs they only run at gen3 speed?

Yes, like running a Gen 4 drive in a B450 motherboard

As if I have the ability they do to search around all the brands and models they do.

So why don't you ask the seller for an M.2 QVL listing?

And if they don't have one, specifically ask if your model is supported if you want to roll the dice on a potential return

      • So why don't you ask the seller for an M.2 QVL listing?

Gees, of course there's a QVL list. The only SSDs on it are gen3.

The M.2 interface on this NAS is pretty wack

Custom M.2 slot to vertical pin out and then custom vertical pin hat to 4x M.2 slots

99% sure the Gen 3 requirement is the same as running Gen 4 GPU's with cheap PCI-E risers and needing to set the BIOS to cap the GPU slot to Gen 3 speeds

NC ran 4x Kingston DC1000B SSD Gen 3 480GB's but considering the temps, the entire setup looks too flaky to run as a 24/7 NAS

The reviews on CWWK confirm the same suspicions:

Not very reliable for a NAS
I’m using it for a NAS solution but sometime one of 4 SSD get disconnected (I’m using truenas). A full restart (power-off->power-on) is necessesary to got the disk back which is not acceptable

    • that if you fit gen4 SSDs they only run at gen3 speed?

Yep, exactly this. It's not an issue.

I have a motherboard that works with gen3 SSDs, but won't boot with a gen4 SSD

That's not normal - you can put Gen4 or Gen5 drives into Gen3 slots and everything should work just fine. This board will work fine with Gen4 drives.

gen3 SSDs, it only supports them in x1 mode.

PCIe3 x1 slots still give close to 1GB/s of bandwidth - this thing only has 2.5Gb networking anyway, so it's only got 250MB/s of connectivity 🤷‍♂️

      • Can’t you connect a 10Gbe usb ethernet adapter and get the full capacity of pcie gen3?

      • That's not normal - you can put Gen4 or Gen5 drives into Gen3 slots and everything should work just fine.

        SHOULD.

This board will work fine with Gen4 drives.

Are you stating that to be a proven fact. Or just something that you are assuming SHOULD be the case. If it is the case why does the spec warn that it doesn't "support" gen4 drives. If they do actually work surely they'd just say its gen3, and we'd all read that to me it works as it SHOULD, that gen4 and gen5 drives will work, just at gen3 speed.

Its not "normal" for specs to point out that something isn't "supported" when it SHOULD work. Unless it doesn't.

        • I'm assuming it will work fine, for two reasons:

          1. It usually does

          2. As you said, Gen3 drives don't even exist any more. This would be a really weird thing to enforce, you'd have to buy used drives 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • @Clear If you could conjure up a solution to allow an N97 / N100 / N150 NUC box that could connect to an external enclosure, function as SATA and house 3.5" HDD's, you'd be god like.

I am very keen to offload my old i5 9010 setup that runs Xpenology in favour of something less power hungry and more discreet. Its the 4 x 3.5" HDD's that causes the challenge.

    • DAS? Brands like Orico, Maiwo and Yottamaster have 1-5 bay 3.5" SATA enclosures that connect via USB and have RAID.

Or the Intel N150 version of the Aoostar linked in the deal description

      • Yep, DAS ideally connected to a low power NUC with the DAS having the SATA capability so I can still use Synology Hybrid Raid. I will have a look at these three options and see what they look like.

Just need a well connected person to come up with a deal ;)

        • SHR isn't going to work with these as the drives would need to be wiped and you'll only have the option of what the enclosure offers. If you wanted SHR you're going to need to have a Synology NAS.

          • @Clear: I don't have a Synology NAS today, I have a Dell 9050 i5 that I acquired from work, shucked from a SFF case and put into a standard case. That has 4 x 3.5" HDD's and it runs Xpenology, which is the full featured Synology OS but on a PC via an initial loader that boots from USB that makes the system think it's a Synology NAS.

That runs SHR without any issues and has done for years. It is possible if the right enclosure is found that operates in a similar manner to a SATA controller on a PC.

            • @jollster101: Ah yep I understand. Unfortunately DSM is going to see external enclosures connected via USB as removable media and won't allow you to add them to the SHR array. While there are methods to force SHR to detect the USB disks it's not officially supported and you'll encounter performance/stability issues.

    • @jollster101 Surely you just need a 4 bay USB enclosure ?

I've used these units and they're great - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007320755776.html - they support massive 22TB drives - but there are plenty of cheaper options too with more bays.

      • I've seen that specific enclosure before and love it how they call the orange protective casing a "condom".

      • So this has SATA capability built in which means I could use Synology Hybrid Raid when connected to the NUC via USB.
