This previously popular featured packed AMD Ryzen NAS and Mini PC is restocked and back on sale. Aoostar have also released the new Intel N150 variant that can be had for US$311.31 (~A$501.79) with the coupon code AUCD30 or AUAF50 or OZAF50 - please note that this only has a single M.2 slot and RAM slot.

The WTR Pro is a more powerful than the usual NAS drives in that it has an AMD Ryzen 7 5825U 8 core, 16 thread CPU paired with AMD Radeon graphics. For video output there's a HDMI 2.1 port, DisplayPort and a full feature USB-C port with 4K video out and PD100W input.

Featuring 4 2.5/3.5" SATA bays (not hot-swappable), 2x M.2 NVMe Gen3 x4 slots and an M.2 WiFi slot that can be turned into an additional SSD slot. For RAM there's two DDR4-3200 SODIMM RAM slots with support for up to 64GB and for connectivity there's two 2.5G LAN ports.

In terms of I/O they've opted to add the ports to the side with 2x 2.5G LAN, 2x USB 3.2, 2x USB 2.0, DP, HDMI, USB-C, MicroSD card slot, 3.5mm audio jack and the DC port. On the rear there is a large 120mm fan to keep the system cool.

While barebones it still comes with Windows 11 Pro and you can install any other OS like TrueNAS, XPEnology and more.

  • Apply the coupon AUCD40 or OZAF60 or AUAF60

AU$ based on current Mastercard rate and GST inclusive.

Tips and tricks:

The WiFi slot can be used as an M.2 NVMe x1 SSD slot and Aoostar may bundle a 2230/2242 sized SSD adapter to convert this. If they don't you can pick up adapters like this cheap or with a bit of effort fit a normal sized 2880 SSD.

Fan settings can be found in the fairly unrestricted BIOS under "/advanced/hardware monitor/system fan". Since it uses a 4pin connector you can swap it out for another. Fan modes:

  • Fan off (0x70) = 30
  • Fan start (0x71) = 35
  • Full speed (0x72) = 80

For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

  • Crap I just got the Intel N150 version, would it be worth trying to cancel the order to get this one? This one is about $120 more

    • +4

I think if the main purpose is plex transcoding, the Intel is the preferred, however if you want it to be more than plex, then ryzen is considered superior.
I think that was the concensus from the last post about this appliance

    • +2

Yeah really depends if using Plex or not. It's the major reason most would go intel, because it's so seamless. Shame it's not for AMD yet, as it's a much more competent system if you don't include quicksync comparisons.

      • I read an interesting post on the 5825U and it seems hardware transcoding can be activated in Plex with the Ryzen.

        https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/11elesd/comment/mbdcx…

AMD is not widely supported by Plex but it appears this may be good for a total of three 4k transcoded streams.

I'm not 100% sure but seems N150 can do 4-5 streams or possibly more due to QSV, and uses less power to do so. I would slightly favour the Intel for server-level stability but YMMV.

5825U is much better if running VMs, desktops etc. even light gaming.

      • I use Jellyfin and intend to use it mostly for media/transcoding, so does this mean I should just stick with the intel?

        • I would, for a streaming media server yes. Jellyfin definately supports Intel QSV, plus it uses less power than the Ryzen and its a cheaper box. For everything else, the Ryzen is better.

depends on use case? just media server: N150 might be enough; more containers? N150 is slower than 11 years old gen 4 i5…

  • Yes I would

  • Trying to add the N150 WTR PRO to cart, AUCD30 does nothing showing $552.60

    • +1

Try typing the codes AUAF50 or OZAF50

Have you made orders on AliExpress before? Often new accounts without orders can't use coupon codes, as a welcome deal applies.

      • Yeah I have order history. Tried all codes under other account too just to make sure and no discount there either.

Thing is the codes work on the Ryzen but not the N150?

Guess no sale tonight. Clunky platform might just wait for an Amazon Terramaster.

  • Nice device.
I would like to use it as nas and Plex. Could I add a graphic card to it as amd transcoding is not supported by Plex.

    What is the best way?

    • +2

There's no PCIe slot in this for you to add a GPU. The Intel N150 linked in the deal would be better suited with the iGPU.

      • +1

        Thanks clear.
But the processing speed for n150 is way less powerful than Ryzen. Any suggestions of Intel alternative NAS?

        • +2

For Plex it matters less. Otherwise you'd be looking at some of the M.2 NVMe SSD 4 bay offerings with N355 and N305 and N200.

        • I run a Toptop N100 NAS MOBO and have a Beelink MINI S12 N100 Mini PC. Both are fine for 4K Plex high with high bitrate playback, i'm sure the N150 will fare better but its like a marginal difference of like 2-3% from benchmarks i have seen.

        • +1

You dont have to run plex on the nas itself. My nas is an old 4th gen dell optiplex that will be horrific at transcoding. I've got a 7th gen machine running plex on proxmox just pointing at the smb share. Yoi cam pick up any old n100 mini pc and replicate my version.

Is it true that Ryzen can be used to Plex?
Any other home entertainment software alternative than Plex?

      • What kind of ram I should get for this nas? 16g or 32g?

        • +1

          16GB would suffice.

    • +1

Seriously don’t bother. It’s been unofficially supported for years but it’s a total crapshoot. If you want something that just works without any headaches just get an Intel chip.

I’d go as far as saying run two seperate setups if you want more cpu power, and also want Plex transcoding.

  • I currently have i7 7700K unraid server. Would this significant upgrade or more side grade ? I love the form factor.

I mainly used it for direct streaming via emby on the home network

  • So this comes with Windows 11, but no drives or memory? How does that work?

    • +2

Windows and been embedding keys in the BIOS/UEFI for years. Install Win11 and it'll activate.

      • OK, thanks!

  • Pity only USB 3.0

    • For what use case ?

USB 3.0 is more than fast enough for the very fastest backup hard drives.

    • There are USB 3.2 10Gbps ports. Or do you mean the PCIe slots are 3.0 only?

      • Are you sure?
They just say "USB3.0" and they are just marked as "SS" on the port, so I would have to assume 3.2 Gen 1.

  • What advantages does this AOOSTAR have over, say a QNAP or Terramaster, which I could also afford?

    • Slightly more processing power than the Terramaster N95 and slightly cheaper, but no OS. Others usually come with some RAM as well. I'd say this is more for those who want to tinker or want to install their own solution anyway.

  • +1

I'm getting $627.93. Do I have to change to pay in USD to get it sub $600?

    • I didn't get any discount either, but only on the N150. Code works for Ryzen. I've bought off Ali before but weird pricing and discount codes make me doubt the platform tbh.

anyone know the power usage of this?
