          • @JL1: Another reason JB hi-fi credit is better.

            • @G-rig: Definitely, more flexible to use at JB with no real time limit.

  • I'm using of eight pro 256 gig I'm hoping that there's a upgrade to a 9 pro 256 gig available where I can potentially trade this one in it's in phenomenal condition for little to no additional money if that makes sense

  • +6

These prices are a joke, they need the non AI model for a 40% discount

    • +5

100% agree with this. Not everyone wants or cares about AI these days. I feel like we are paying an AI tax on everything that not everybody cares about but are being forced to accept. AI seems to be creeping into things where it just has no business being in.

        • +6

          woke bias AI, lol

        • +3

          woke bias AI

          huh?

          • +1

@Nillionaire: Yknow when your world is so divorced from reality, facts sound woke 🤣

  • When do you reckon the Pixel 8 will see some good trade in deals?

    • +1

      Now, trade in value $300
Still a bit disappointing, the Pixel 7 trade in value was $375
      Pixel 5 was $220

      • Just did trade in quote from OW, Pixel 3 gets $25 lol.
I guess P3s are too old for trade in. Dang
        :(

        • ha, would be good to keep for a knock about at home on wifi lol.
I did like the pixel 3 XL, way better loud speakers and felt more premium than these new ones.
The glass case adds too much weight and slippery/delecate.

          • @G-rig: Annoying you miss out on the bonus here then

            • +1

@greennick: hey? think i sold the 3 XL years ago for a good price.
Currently got the p8, been great, handy size. Proper fingerprint scanner and mild CPU/camera upgrades would be ok, don't care much about AI.

Only gripe is the loudspeakers continually got worse and quieter once under the screen, and the screen edges are curved
I didn't have luck with the usual screen protectors but still got the first custom nano protector on.

              • @G-rig: I just mean, if you decide to keep the old phone, you miss out on the bonus trade in, which kills the deal

                • +1

@greennick: yes so trade in and it's $500 off
to be fair you wouldn't get heaps more selling privately these days (and all the ebay fees + 100's of marketplace messages and time wasters isn't my idea of a good time)

          • @G-rig: Probably should have done it sooner but to be fair, the P3 has been excellent.
It's starting to show it's age and photos suck compared to modern phones.

            • @KingUltra: yeah those were good but no support/security updates for quite a few years now.
The lousy batteries are what you really notice first after a few years and you noticed the faster CPU/Ram these days too!

              • @G-rig: 100% dude. Battery is shot, and new apps run slow.
Maybe I bite the bullet and get P9 outright. Or do you guys recommend the P8/P7?. Don’t need AI crap.

        • How did you do that?

          https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/c/technology…

          Sorry!
There are no search results for'Google Pixel Phones'.

          lol

  • +1

Interesting that when I bought a P8A a few months ago I traded in an iPhone 6s Plus for $1, plus the bonus. Now, the same phone does not qualify as a trade-in

    • +1

You were lucky that they accepted the outdated 6s then (the $1 value was ~ real value today. They wouldn't accept the much better Note 4 with all sensors & replaceable batt, still rocking & competing with the latest iPhones that lack S-pen ;)
"The Same phone" doesn't qualify (of course, how many did you have? ;)

  • Vodafone and Google have higher trade in value for pixel 7 256gb.
I wonder if anyone has done the maths to see how they compare and what the total out of pocket would be

    • +4

      Your turn to shine!

  • +7

Google has priced themselves out of a sale. Back in the days there was a big price difference between pixel and other flagship phones.

I've been a nexus/pixel fan for a long time but their software has been buggy. My wife's pixel 6 has crapped itself after a software update, calls stuck on speaker button with no sound, no sound on phone at all. A software company like google shouldn't have these issues.

    • +2

My Pixel 6 is still running strong, only getting a new one as the battery is getting a bit shit and it is almost 3 years old

      • Really? Heavily used almost 5y Galaxy Note 10+ has 86% battery health. S23 Ultra even better with 97% health (will replace batt for $99 in Jan <2y with free Care+ ;)

        • how do you check % health with google?

        • I use my phone a lot

          • @greennick: Do it. I usually just buy the odd number models, the 4 and 6 weren't the best :).
With the pre-order deals it's almost worth getting one every year (as I got the 8 last year but still isn't perfect).

            • @G-rig: Oh, I am getting one, just working out what deal is my best deal, lol

              • @greennick: If you have your heart set on pixel 9 pro I would say there is a very good chance of a similar deal when they start doing preorder.

              • @greennick: yeah i've done the trade part, haven't ordered yet.

Seems like the Pro is only $200 more, but I'll just get pixel 9, prefer the smaller size. I'm not buying it for games or just to watch videos on.

Don't mind that it's the cheapest one as well, as i really don't need an upgrade but works out ok.

    • +1

They've priced themselves like that on purpose to be seen as equally as good as iPhone Pro / Pro Max and Galaxy Ultra instead of a step below. Totally agree about the software issues.

      • +1

Android is more advanced O/S vs restricted iOS, with real multitasking so you can expect more S/W issues. The even more advanced Galaxy UI layer would have higher risks but still beats iOS on productivity with S-pen support, DEX, advanced file system functionality, AI on >2y phones, etc.

  • What happens if you pre-order the pixel for the $350 gift card, then once the GC comes return the phone unopened?
Would they refund you the phone minus the gift card cost, even though the gift card itself wasn't used to purchase the phone?

    • +2

pretty sure they'd close easy loopholes like that for free money, perhaps people can comment from the previous year.
Just don't waste your time buying if you are going to return.

      • Yeah agree they probably invalidate the gift card if unused or if you have used it, they take it off the refund price. No free lunch here.

  • +1

Google store offering up to $850 trade-in credit for the Pixel 8 Pro if you purchase the Pixel Pro 9 / XL.

"operated by PCS Wireless and OCRLabs" Does anyone have feedback on those two companies?

  • So have they finally fixed the bad drop outs when driving around? I had the pixel 7 Pro for a month before i returned it, was shocking, always dropping cell connection while driving or on the train.

    • You got a 5G sim?

      • No idea, is there a difference?

  • google think they can charge cutting edge flagship prices with a much worse processor?

Keen to see what pixel 10 tensor chip is liek when they finally move to tsmc, and also move to 3nm. Then it might actually be worth this premium price

    • First generation of any product always going to come with some issues though with the new chip.. At least tensor is greatly matured. And realistically, speed wise, are you going to notice the difference?

My main grievance with Pixel products has been the battery which does seem to relate to the Samsung Tensor chip… My pixel 7 had worse battery BRAND NEW vs my pixel 5 2 years old when it got replaced.. Granted the 5 used a mid range chip, but still, ridiculous. These days I can't get a full day of normal use without a charge.

      • I'm not after speed, im after efficiency like yourself.

I'm chomping at the bit to move away from Samsung, or at least to a foldable. But the phones this year have been terrible, everyone using AI as a crutch to not make any genuine hardware improvements

      • P7P user here, my initial model had really shitty battery and often got hot, ironically when the camera's stabilisation gave way and I got a new P7P warranty from google, everything's perfect.

Didn't get hot, battery lasts much much longer than the prev one does. I'm not sure if I got a lemon initially or they refreshed the newer batches with improved hardware?

Just sharing that they could've improved things since the first wave of phones for the P7 line

        • +1

My P7P 512Gb was through Telstra outright with a bunch of freebies.

          Never an issue.

Same with my P6P before it.

I do notice a lot of battery drain when I'm using Android Auto but otherwise it easlily lasts me a day.

  • Do we get one year of gemini advanced if we order the pro phones here in Australia🤔

    • I am not 100% sure but I got Gemini Advanced for a year with a ChromeBook Plus.

  • Pixel 10 is where it's at. Hold on to your iPhone XS Max and Samsung Galaxy 9 for 1 more year.

    • +1

Why would you hold to iPhone XS Max when Galaxy Note 10+ has many times lower head radiation (actually the best of the top) & superior in any aspect? Even Note 4 has more productivity features than XS Max ;)

      • +2

Wow, first time meeting a fan of pre-S21 Galaxies and Notes in 2024, cool.

  • +2

Almost 3 grand retail price for the fold 9 512g, daaaaaaamn son! I don't want something that valuable on my person all day.

  • -3

Google has much better trade-in values. For my pixel 8 pro they are offering roughly $850, compared to $450 from jb + $350 bonus. For the pixel 7 pro jb is offering $280 + $350, whereas google is offering $700.

So given that google is offering $100 more in store credit and better trade-in value, it is much better to purchase from them. The only downside is that google store credit is a lot less useful than jb store credit.

    • +3

The only downside is that google store credit is a lot less useful than jb store credit.

This is a massive downside, you can buy so much more things at JB than Google lol

      • -1

Look, I agree, but provided you can utilise the store credit, it is still better value to buy from google. The OP wasn't claiming that going through JB is a better deal because their store credit is more useful. He is claiming that the JB deal is better value dollar for dollar, which it isn't.

        • +1

Is your neg based on the deal or OP's opinion?

    • +1

For my pixel 8 pro they are offering roughly $850, compared to $450 from jb + $350 bonus.

      So that's $850 vs $800; and

For the pixel 7 pro jb is offering $280 + $350, whereas google is offering $700

      $630 vs $700.

I agree, Google credit is next to useless and took me forever to try and spend $10 (and may not have bothered). JB GCs are much better

      • -1

G-rig. Yes, but also $450 store credit vs $350. Don't forget unidays/student bean.

        • +2

Unidays/student bean are targeted deals not available to general public

          • @CodeXD: That's not quite true. Only students can get a unidays/student bean account, but anyone can use the codes they generate.

        • seems quite similar. I only see it useable if you save the google credit for the next year/time when you upgrade your phone (assuming no expiry date)

    • Why don't you not trade the phone in, pay the penalty, get the JB trade in bonus plus gift card and sell the phone separately. Then it is better than google deal. Google credit forcing you to spend it in 12 months, blackmailing you to buy next phone. If it comes past 12 months screwed as well.

  • Was looking at trading in my S21 for the XL, but hell no at those prices, $624 S21 for a while longer.

  • Got my preorder in. Surprised JB had the cases in stock and available to buy and collect today on announcement day. I would've thought they'd hold them back until next week when the phones are ready.

Traded in my P8 for the preorder gift card plus $350 off RRP (and got $350 for my 256GB). Happy with that.

Picking the P9P XL up next week and have the case ready today.

Telstra have a free Pixel Tablet with dock if you pre-order by Aug 21 . No discount on the phone, but tablet worth $899. May be able to quick sale on marketplace for $500

    • +2

May be able to quick sale on marketplace for $500

      Dreaming

      • +2

ok good to know cheers ill give it a miss

  • +3

Pixel XL Pro is the true successor to the 8 Pro but they changed the tier with a new name to change a lot more for the upgrade. Typical Apple move. Respect.

    • +1

Should've just named it 9 Pro Max lol

  • +1

was considering upgrading my p7, but at those prices…. probably not.

Pixel 7 was such good value, I don't see the base models being anywhere near as good value any more

    • +1

that's true, the pixel 8 seems like a better phone, bit smaller for one hand operation but much of a muchness.
The pixel 7 felt like I may still drop it and a bit top heavy.
The voice to text was a massive upgrade from p5 to p7 but the gains are very marginal these days.

Still need to check the specs for the pixel 9 but prob just stick to the small factor, cheapest one. Nice not outlaying a fortune when buying these outright.

    • +2

I agree at RRP, $1350 for a standard Pixel 9 is not great value. You need the JB or other deals to make it worthwhile…trade in the P7 for $220 (if it's in good nick) at JB, get a $200 trade-in bonus. That makes it $927, then you get a $250 JB voucher to use on something else, so effectively a new Pixel 9 for $677.

      • Yeah for me it would be $1347 - 300 (P8) - 200 - 250 (GC) = $597 so not bad. ALso got $100 in JB GC from last deal.

I was almost keen on the 256GB but not for $150 more, f that. (you only get an extra $50 trade value. Maybe if it was $100 extra).

  • So it looks like the best deal I can get on a regular 128gb Pixel 9 by trading in the old Pixel 6 in my drawer is effectively $798 from JB. $1347, less $99 trade and $200 trade bonus, and a $250 JB gift voucher which might as well be cash for me given how much I buy there throughout the year.

Anyone found a way to beat $798 for a phone only, no contract deal?

    • +1

Pay the balance with discounted gift cards for a bit more savings.

  • The pre order telstra port in - $1700 bonus will beat that I believe

    • Port in? As in I need to change to Telstra? I already have a SIM all paid for so I'm only looking for an outright deal on phone only.

  • My Pixel 7 is still going strong. Will probably wait for the Pixel 10 to drop and maybe then wait another 6 months for the inevitable discounts. At least at these prices.

    • +2

It's always cheapest keeping the phone you got, the p7 is still solid yeah you maya as well wait to the P10 (RRP will be more again than this year).

Still have to weigh it up, check the trade in or sale value of the 7. Will be less in 14+6 months. The 'inevitable discounts' are never less than the preorder discounts so just depends when you want to upgrade/buy really.

      • Spot on, the launch discounts are always big. As I said above I can effectively get a Pixel 9 for $798. Right now a Pixel 8 on the Google store is $1199, JB $1187.

        • I've always found the biggest discounts come later in the product cycle, plus you get to wait and see if the product has and quality control issues or is complete lemon. And as said above, the biggest discount is eeking out another few years from the phone you have - gone are the years of each upgrade being a solid leap over the one before it. It's far more incremental these days. Except the price.

          • @dontpanic: Yeah but then your old one isn't worth anything really once it's two or three generations old (but still probably be ahead if you don't need the latest every year). I remember picking up a 3XL when they were half price for $750 from Google, before all these pre-release deals were a thing.

The point of the basic pixels was you could upgrade more often vs a 2k iPhone or Samsung, but the RRP is a lot more now. Agree the upgrades are pretty mild these days compared to pixel 1 vs 2 or 3 vs 4. I think most people would know what they are getting now.

The difference seems to be in the software, but a proper fingerprint scanner would be good finally.

  • I wanna upgrade my old pixel but the new ones don't have unlimited photo uploads..

  • Can someone check my math? Assuming 47% tax bracket.

Original cost of pixel 8 pro xl 128gb $1847
    Effective cost after salary sacrifice $979 = 1847 x 0.53
Cost after gift cards and trade in = $0

    $0 = 979 - 350 (gift card) - 350 (trade in bonus) - 279 (trade in value of existing phone)

Therefore, better off upgrading phone every year if trade in value of phone is more than 279

    • This has me curious. How does this work exactly and if I was to pick a 1800 one, and a lower tax bracket how do I work it out. Do I ask my work to put through the order on behalf.

      • +1

No you buy the phone yourself. It works like this:
        1. Buy phone for $1847, tell your employer and provide receipt
        2. Your employer will then reduce your next month's income by $1847
        3. Your employer will also pay you back $1847 (this is considered a business expense. It is not income) separately

The effect of steps 2 and 3 is that your taxable income for the year has reduced by $1847 but your disposable income (what you get in your bank account from your employer) is unchanged. This means you pay 0.47x1847=$848 less tax by salary sacrificing (doing steps 1 to 3). Think of it as an immediate $1847 tax deduction. It has the same effect.

If you stuck with your old phone and never upgraded, you save $1847 but you also pay $848 more tax by not salary sacrificing. If you do buy the phone, you have to pay $1847 but you also pay $848 less tax by salary sacrificing. That is why the "effective cost of the phone is $979.

If you are on a lower tax bracket, you just change the 0.47 number to the tax rate that is relevant.

The crazy thing is, if the trade in value of your device is more than $279, you are actually financially better off by upgrading your phone compared to sticking with your old phone.

        • Legend, thanks for this breakdown!

        • Consumerism in full force!

    • +1

      What is this sorcery?

      • See my explanation above

    • How would you do this in reality, work orders aren't going to bother with trades and gift cards etc?

I like just getting the basic pixels as I prefer the smaller size and just write them off.

      • It's not a work order. You buy the phone yourself and provide receipt to employer. See my explanation above.

Unfortunately, based on the numbers, it actually works out slightly cheaper to get the Pixel 9 Pro XL compared to the basic Pixel 9 if salary sacrificing. Although it may differ depending on tax bracket, I haven't run the numbers using different tax rates.

        • Ah ok, you could also claim it at tax time but it sounds like you are basing it on 100% work use (aka just writing it off) so probably easier to salary sacrifice and wouldn't bother depreciating low value devices although technically you are meant to).

It should work for any phone btw I'm not sure who would get the most expensive model upfront but still get the discounts and trade in. BTW I notice the actual tax invoice is a higher amount than your out of pocket so you may want to check that, doesn't deducted the trade in amount.

I prefer the smaller format phone, one hand operation and not carrying around a massive tablet almost, more expensive if it's lost, damaged or stolen too (although my latitude card should cover it).
