Actually the p7p had the biggest screen. When p8p was made they went to 20:9 from the 19.5:9 that was on the p7p. Doing so the screen shrunk from 110.6 cm2 to 108.7 cm2. A downgrade in my opinion as the width of screen size is the limiting factor to screen "bigness". p9p is still 20:9 but a lil bigger (109.7 cm2) than the p8p. The difference between the p8p and p9p is more negligible than the decrease from 19.5:9 to 20:9.

They call it 6.8 now and compared to 6.7 it sounds bigger but don't be fooled. It's just marketing and they are free to round up and down inches as they please.

        • :o I appreciate the information!

          • +1

@Nillionaire: Actually there is more to it. You will notice if you watch a video in a 19.5:9 phone vs a 20:9 phone. The shrink that happens in apparent size of the video is more than the 110.6 cm2 to 108.7 cm2 suggests as the 20:9 phone will have more volume of black bars - useless screen.

To put it in more layman appreciation the if the p7p looked was a 6.7 inch phone the p8p at 20:9 would look like a 6.5-6.6 inch phone when watching videos/ twitch etc.

I was really disappointed when they did this. Samsung and apple still rocking the 19:5:9 currently but apple in the 16 series apparently will shrink the aspect ratio to 19.8:9 or something along those lines to achieve the marketing size of 6.9. I won't appreciate a longer and heavier phone that will show the same size videos as the current 6.7 15 pro max

Can we order this now in store? Or wait till 22nd august?

    • Now.

  • I'm confused. I'm on a pixel 7 pro and the 300gb plan ($99) which is out in October. What do I do ?

    • +2

      wait till October.

      • +1

        Thank you :)

        • +1

That was easy. And more concise than asking chatGPT too!!

    • It used to be there were no cancellation fees if you recontracted in the last 4 months of a 24mth contact. So if you wanted to take this offer before it expires you should be able to.

    • +1

Port out and pay your cancellation fee which will be less than $100 then port back in and get this deal.

Unreliability if you want to save your time.

Occasional crashing or freezing while recording a video or taking photos and switching lenses quickly.
You can literally expect any kind of malfunction if the phone gets hot.
Summer is not a good season to own a Pixel.
Not to mention the proximity sensor stops working randomly which make the phone calls a nightmare and you have to restart the phone in order to fix it.
Sometimes the proximity sensor stays active when you have a strong light source 💡☀️above your head and constantly turns off the screen because it thinks you're holding it next to your ear even when you put it on speaker. But in reality you're trying to use your phone normally.
This alone is enough to makes you want to smash your phone.
        Goodbye team Pixel.

        • +1

thank you. not hearing good things about the Pixel.

looking for a new phone with the following in mind Samsung A55, S24, Nothing 2a Plus (coming out Sep) or the Oneplus/Xiaomi (only issue with warranties)

        • +1

That proximity sensor is the worst, you try and call up anywhere that needs you to use the number pad and it will turn off the screen 800 times before you manage to get the full number in. I tried looking for a way to turn it off but there isn't one

I've also noticed that when I try to watch videos in full screen/landscape, about 20% of the time it won't display the video centred in the screen and I have to flip my phone the other way to get it working correctly

Sometimes apps will just stop registering your taps and button inputs but I'm unsure if that's the fault of the Pixel or the app

Y'all know if I can port in as a new customer from Boost? (smth smth same network, not a new customer)

    • No. Boost isn’t eligible.

  • this or samsung galaxy s24 ultra?

    • -1

Yeah I'm starting to get bored of the pixels and looking at Samsung because they always have newer exciting features

      • +8

And that's the reason I prefer Pixels, I don't want the gimmicky features and bloatware. 😉

        • The back of the Galaxy looks sleek. The Pixel looks like they attached a Metallic Lego Brick with lenses embedded.

      • +1

I swapped over from Samsung Galaxy S23 >> P8 Pro on Harvey Norman deal last year. Will never touch a Samsung again personally - hardware unreliable, software/bloatware and Pixel feels much more polished. YMMV.

  • What's the rule when porting out and back again? Porting out for a few days or?

    • Needs to be 30 days

      • +1

        Not true.

      • -1

Headline does NOT say so: Fraud is Fraud!
Last such offer I got thrown out of their store because my Lebara was 29 days.
Telstra matched the deal so JB missed out but later they slowed me down to a crisp.

6.2 here says you need to repay 23/24 of the voucher?

    https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consume…

Can anyone confirm they’ve been able to recently cancel for 800 maximum after receiving a higher voucher?

    • Interesting as 6.3 states that you need to repay pro rata value of the voucher if you decided to leave early. That would negate the benefit

      • +1

I’ve shared 2 links above to help

        • +1

I read the comment from May. In that thread there was reference to an update to Ts and Cs in June and the rep didn’t know about it at that time.

Any more recent anecdotes? The link I gave is for terms dated July 24

          • +2

@jonomatic: Just put an order in and can confirm it is $800 max + bonus $350 gift card on pickup of phone

  • +1

So when can I walk into a store and do this?

When will they have the phones in store?

    • Pre order currently. Only available in store.

  • +3

JB Website states that "The $1100 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card will replace the value of the Voucher stated in the Critical Information Summary" so would this mean that 1700 would replace the $800 in this case?

    • That's how I read it.
So 23/24 pro rata $1700 voucher repayment.

So $1629 is the cancellation fee according to the terms.

      • there's also a maximum cancellation clause which caps it. so not quite $1629

        • where?

          • @Iniuriae: nevermind worked it out - essentially this deal works because JB have increased the voucher price from $800 to $1700, but haven't increased the max repayment price in the conditions from $800 to match. Would expect this to be amended very quickly if a lot of people take advantage of this.

            • @Iniuriae: It’s literally been like that for years. It won’t be amended. They know the risk.

            • @Iniuriae: Telstra Terms set repayment amount based on the value of the voucher given at the time.

Telstra early cancel terms "You’ll need to repay Telstra for any vouchers you received when you purchased your plan. The Voucher Repayment Fee (if applicable) is pro-rated, equal to the total amount of the base voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by months (or part months) remaining in your plan term."

From jb "The $1700 off the purchase price of a Google Pixel 9 Pro XL phone (referred to as the “JB Hi-Fi Voucher” in the Telstra Terms and Conditions)"

voucher repayment fee == base voucher, less pro-rated amount.

Can it be a new number for an existing customer

    • Yes, that works

  • +9

Can anyone TLDR steps for this?

    1. Sign up for a new phone (Google Pixel 9 Pro XL 128GB $147) and a new number on the 24-Month 300GB $99 Monthly Plan
    2. Cancel the contract?
    3. Pay $766.59 + $147 Google Pixel 9 Pro XL + $99 for the first month fee?
    4. Enjoy a new phone for under $1,000?
    • +1

That's what I want to know, if that is correct

      • Me too

    • also how to cancel, through jbhifi or through telstra

    • +3

      No,

      1. Sign up for a new phone (Google Pixel 9 Pro XL 128GB $147) and a new number on the 24-Month 300GB $99 Monthly Plan
      2. Pay $147 Google Pixel 9 Pro XL + $99 for the first month fee.
      3. Cancel the contract?
      4. Pay $766.59
      5. Enjoy a new phone for just over $1,000?
    • Yes

  • I don't see this on jbhifi website ?

    • The second banner on their home page

  • When can we signup for this ?

  • And where is this phone assembled? 😉

    • …relevance? 🤔

Indian manufactured iphone 15 have had much higher fault rates

        • Alright, that's a fair case.

        • +1

          Source?

Unless you mean the parts have a higher rejection rate? In which case, it shouldn't affect you as the end customer as they won't make it past QC.

    • Probably majority in India, few in China

$2549 for the top model. When the hell did the Pixels stop being good value for money? From memory the top models were under $1000 not so long ago.

More than 10x the price of my $250 Moto G84 and with significantly less features. Insane.

    • +1

*hardware features. the pixel kills the G84 software-wise?

    • +1

google phones stopped being good value once they dropped the nexus line imo

    • What kind of features does G84 have over Pixel 9? Chop Chop Flash Light?

      • -1

3.5mm headphone jack + microSD slot

The camera is admittedly nowhere near as good.

        • +4

Well, the world is moving on :) It is like saying new laptops are not as good as old laptops because they don't have CD Player, or Display Port output.

A sub-$100 phone may even have removable battery but won't make them better than the G84.

          • +1

@bobokingdom: CD drives are bulky and not required in modern computing so it made sense to remove them.

My Note9 had a 3.5mm jack and microSD reader in a slim form factor and was a very powerful elegant phone. The only reason they were removed is because people have been indoctrinated to believe they were good ideas.

DisplayPort should definitely be included on laptops and they often are. It is superior to HDMI and an open standard.

    • From memory the top models were under $1000 not so long ago

Yes it's expensive but this is a stretch. Show me where an absolute top of the line Pixel was <$1000 on launch.

I'd also argue that looking at the top spec is a poor measure of value.

      • -3

How is an absolute top of the line phone got the performance from a 4 year old phone?

    • So you're upset Google wants to compete with iPhone Pro Max and Galaxy Ultra models instead of the Moto G84?

    • +1

Pixel 2 (maybe xl? dont remember) was $1400, so not sure what you mean. Nexus phones though yes, were great value for money.

      • I was about to say that the OG Pixel was so expensive, and as I remember it was only available from Telstra.

I still love the Pixel XL built though, and Pixel 4 comes second imo.

    • I love my G84 beside the camera. Such a beast of a phone.

  • +3

How does one survive on only 128GB???

    • +1

I frequently delete the photos I don't need, so I don't have to organise them later for archiving and printing. The low disk capacity keeps me disciplined on photo organisation.

    • +2

Yeah I don't understand people that buy high end flagship phones like the Pixel Pro / Pro XL, Galaxy Ultra, iPhone Pro / Pro Max but only get 128GB storage. Surely at least to future proof? Like in which situation is pro performance and longevity important to you but not storage?

      • Then get the 1TB model?

    • +5

I'm annoyed at Apple and Samsung for starting this BS trend. Storage is cheap and significantly less than what they charge.

My partner spent almost $2k on a 128gb iphone and always complains about running out of space.

    • OneDrive family subscription for about $13 per year. 5 family members get 1tb each.

    • +1

      Self host cloud storage..

Nearly 50TB of file, photo, media storage available to me on any device

      • what are you using for that?

        • +1

Google gives you 0.015tb to share amongst Gmail, drive, and photos.

I dedicate 8TB to photos & videos (Immich) alone, though I haven't quite used them all up.

Documents don't take a lot of space so I use photon drive instead ~5GB free.

About 15TB is Media Server, YouTube etc.

The remaining I just expanded a few days ago so will have lots of space for years to come.

          • @lawyerz: How well does Immich backup photos and videos? I'm using Google Photos to do that, although it is quite expensive, its integration is worth it.

            • @PR0r: immich far exceeded my expectations. it does gets a bit laggy in the app when the library gets really big, the app needs some polish still but overall it is far more polished than i had expected, and works very smoothly and didn't need too much tinkering at all to get it working. the web interface is smooth and works well.

if you like google photos - get yourself an old google pixel 1 and upload unlimited original quality to your hearts' content without counting towards your limit. just set it up with some ftp server, or syncthing or something to get photos into the pixel 1 phone to upload.

              • @lawyerz: There's also a Magisk module for unlimited google photos backups - basically spoofs a Pixel 1, but because of this, doesn't work with video boost.

                • @gamerkonks: oh yeah keep forgetting about that - but need root, and then got to hide said root from a bunch of apps that wont play nicely, lots more tinkering but will work.

              • @lawyerz: Does Immich (or any other app) do image recognition like faces etc? That's been my main reason for using Google Photos.

                • +1

@kiitos: Yep they do. Well Immich does and it works well, don't know about the others. There are def alternatives e.g. photo prism.

Theres even a tool to import google photos export to Immich called Immich go. Same tool can be used to import into immich, automatically creating folders as albums if you wanted that.

                  • @lawyerz: Thanks for that! Will definitely have to have a look.
