Anyone know if this would work as a Plex server / Jellyfin server?

    • +1

Yes it would. You will need to see if you are going to transcoder or not. But for direct play this is good

    • +11

I've been running a lower spec ACER i3/ 8G RAM mini desktop to run Plex/ SabNZBDplus/ pyMedia/ Radarr on headless Linux.

FORGOT: This thing is also running mythtv-backend using a USB DBTV tuner, but theses days we only use it during the footy season coz there's no way I'm paying moneys to murdock.

files are served from a 16 year old HP-Proliant microserver with 20T HDD array.

      No complaints.

      • Is that for live footy? In which case I'm curious why not just connect the coax directly into the TV itself

        • +12

We record & pick it up about 40minutes to skip the ads. That way when it gets to the quarter that matters it's all prettymuch in sync ;-)

      • xpenology? On the microserver?

      • +2

Glad to see someone else is still rockin' an HP Microserver.

Got mine for ~$180 way back - probably the best OzBargain I ever got

        • +1

It's proven to be a gem of a thing. Solid as.

      • Thanks for the info :)

I am thinking of something similar, do you connect via another household or just when you are at home ?

    • +2

The built-in GPU supports QuickSync and can decode/encode 4K HEVC, so yeah, should be alright.

      • +2

Bitrate matters. If CPU is this slow the decoder may not run well with 50mb/s videos in 4k. But if this is not 4k or some rip with 15mb/s should be fine.

    • You'd think that this is such a frequently asked question that… Plex or Jellyfin would have an entire page describing it.

  • What brand are the SSD and are they also second hand? Or are they new?

  • Do these have the sled for a 2.5" drive inside?

It also looks like the memory is upgradable and has 2x M.2 slots inside too? (judging from this chassis opening video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi1D8-R_eNc)

    • +1

Regarding the m.2 slots be sure they can address the size SDDs you want to install. I've had issues with older ACER notebooks and minis not recognising m.2 SDDs larger than 256G.

      • +2

        I have the i5 8th gen version, and it's running a 4tb nvme drive

    • +2

Got one last time it does not have the 2.5 tray in there nor connection cable. The wifi included in just a cheap usb dongle. Ended up in the bin for me.

      • Can you confirm if this has 2x M.2 slot for nvme ??

        • Yes. It does have 2x M.2 slot.

  • 8100T or N100?

    • +4

N100 is a touch slower but draws less power.

Probably more comes down to buying a newer/new N100 based machine vs a refurb older machine…

I went for the latter, I have a 8500t running proxmox/a few vms. (I'm aware the 8500t isnt a direct comparison, but I do also like/prefer the idea of re-using older hardware that's plenty capable).

    • +2

My personal experience with a more stable build has been better, had to return my Kamurai n100 twice due to build issue

Also my use case is mainly Plex, radarr etc so it worked well.

  • This or https://amzn.asia/d/4ircyMH compare to 10th gen
    ?

    • Is that 3x more capable than this one?

    • Using one of these to host Blue Iris with 8 tapo c210. Cheaper and better han most NVR

      • Details please? Are the camera connected via WiFi or do they need to be connected using very long network cable? I have a few c210 cameras too.

        • +1

Just wifi. You can sign up for a free trial and run on your laptop to test first before committing

Can i use it as a typewriter

    • Can you link where it says it's not supported? 8th gen is supposed to be supported.

    • +4

Wrong, 8th gen is the minimum for official win11.

    • +1
    • +3

Great, thank you guys for pointing out 8th gen is supported.

I remembered I had a work pc with 8th gen chip and was not allowed to upgrade to windows 11 and hence the question.

      Apparently my memory failed me.

      • +1

Still may be not upgradeable for another reason.

      • +1

        Cunningham’s Law? Well played.

      • Could be the TPM 2.0?

  • Possibly silly question given it's a desktop processor, but can these be powered via the type-c port? One of my hesitations in buying these would be a reliance on a specific adapter

    • +2

DC barrell power plug. Too old and desktop spec to be powered by USB c.

I believe these only have a type C port on front for data and charging TO other devices.

    • +1

There are some USB-C-to-barrel connectors that you might be able to use.

  • +2

    https://www.lwt.com.au/Brochures/N4660%20Spec%20Sheet.pdf

    10100 is 65W full fat
8100T is only 35W!!! but apparently 28% slower on avg (single and multi core)

  • @OP can you tell us about the SSD condition type and age? i saw the mobo has M.2 slots x2 for storage, M.2 slot x1 for network (short one), but also it looked like it has SATA connector?

So what is the condition of the SSD / are they originals or brand new? are they 2.5inch sata? or m.2 drive?

    • Hi it will be 2.5 inch, used but tested in good health.

      • +1

Will it mound in the proper 2.5 tray?

  • I dont game anymore, are these good enough for just youtube and movies?

    • +3

More than enough. My wife does MS Office, browsers based SAAS, zoom calls, kids does YouTube and watch DVD on an older Veriton with a 6th gen which is a good 18 or so % slower than the 8100T even. The CPU in that is 10 years old now!

If you want a bit of future proofing suggest get the 10th gen with 16GB.

      • Depends on budget. For YouTube I'd just pay $109.

        • hmmm.. this has a PCI-e 16x slot… which means you could run a pci e cable to outside of the case and run a GPU for mid-tier gaming.

          • @hippo2s: I believe there is some acer gpu enclosure that could be found and also a 3d printed bracket too

      • thanks!

  • Happy with my Wyze purchase from a previous deal. would buy more if that deal every came up again.

  • +1

I just received my HP T640, which is still on sale despite the expired tag.

The Ryzen RG1505G has been surprisingly good and at 12W TDP.

Mine came with WiFi 5 & BT5.1 internal.

Only downside is you would need a bigger NVME, RAM was two sticks.

    • Oh that one looks very nice, I might look into getting that for a headless plex server :)

  • Anyone have any knowledge, or have any experience, with a machine like this inside an arcade cabinet, basically just running MAME? I imagine stock MAME would be ok, but how would it go once BGFX filters and whatnot are applied that require a bit more horsepower?

    • Pretty sure that it will be more than capable. I used to run MAME and various emulators on a PC with i3-3220 (3rd Gen) and 8GB RAM. No issues with performances what-so-ever.

  • Will it work for a 1050/1650 Low Profile? Really interested in limited gaming on this thing.

  • Anyone know if the RAM on these is upgradeable?

    • +1

They're just the common SODIMM DDR4 from laptop.

      • yeah but how many slots

  • -2

Can I mine bitcoin with this?

    • You need to buy a cluster of 20 to make this worthwhile. Go for it.
