  • How would this phone go coming from a Note 10+? Will I notice the drop from 12Gb to 8Gb?

    • +11

Nope not with the RAM but you will notice the size difference, I went smaller too, currently using the S23 256 from a 6.8" phone and I enjoy the smaller size screen.

    • Biggest difference would probably be size and battery life (compared to new note 10+). It’s got decent battery life, but you just can’t beat a big battery.

      • +3

from battery life testing, the S23 is actually better. Possibly from a Snapdragon vs the old Exynos in the Note and a smaller screen. The difference in battery size is only 400mAh

    • Hey mate, I did exactly this but with a S23+ (only difference is size and UFS 4.0)

It's leaps and bounds faster, 120hz screen (not a new feature in this day and age) feels much nicer to use, the lack of a S pen doesn't bother me although the lower PPI on the screen is a downgrade.

Battery life is better, though I can't give a concrete number, setting the performance profile to light lets me end the day on ~50% charge.

Also doesn't do the really annoying Exynos habit where the phone heats up heaps for no reason.

    Base model S23 ultra $1597 :/

  • +2

Been holding out for the ultra. Shld I just bite the bullet and get this? Just FYI, I been using a huawei mate 10 pro for the last several years.

    • +2

They're not really at all comparable

    • Mate 10 pro is solid. I would consider waiting for when Pixel 8 pro is discounted to $7-800.

    • There are plenty on FB selling for ~$1000-1200

      • +2

Don't send people to hell by suggesting buying stuff on FB, no guarantee whatsoever.

        • So how do you sell and buy 2nd hand used items?

          • +1

            @andylch: eBay plus seller maybe??

Facebook is so shady though…. Definitely not for used electronics (which have the ability to be working one second and go kaput the next second) . Maybe used furniture, toys etc.

No hard feelings, just my 2 cents.

    • I went from a Mate 20 Pro to S24+ and its pretty good, noticeable speed improvement, crazy bright screen in the sun and almost 2 day battery

    • Big screen size difference between them

    • Hi, when is the last security update has happened on Huawei. Wondering do they support normal Google apps

  • +7

Great phone, and also a good to see a decent price without the need to trade anything in.

Am also waiting for the comments "this isn't a bargain , I traded in my near new S22 and only paid $497 for this phone…"

    • I paid $460 with this deal and didn't trade anything in.. just pretended to
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/845682

      • how does that work?

      • +2

        just pretended to

but then Asurion would have charged you the cost of the 'trade-in phone'?

          • @jjsnacks: Oh cool. So a nice hit to your credit rating then?

            • +1

@serpserpserp: Nope they don't do a credit check
Didn't need to submit ID or anything like that. In fact they never even sent me an email so unsure if they tried to take the funds out

    • Not a bargain, I "traded in" nothing and only paid $680 for a 256GB S24.

You need two of these S23's to get to 256GB /j

PM if you need a $30 Perks code

      • Spare codes still available!

      • Hi can you let me know how did you managed to get this price for S24

  • +8

Some people would actually prefer the S23 CPU over the S24 CPU, since they went Snapdragon 8G2 to Exynos 2400.

    • +1

I would too but less software support especially for an older model (4yrs vis the S24's 7yrs) kinda sucks.

      • +2

Tbh i never hold phones for more than 3 years, maybe my case is niche but im sure alot share the same sentiment

      • Yep, there's a compromise for every option.
S23 - older model, shorter support, slightly weaker screen.
S24 Exy - worse reception and optimisation. Battery worse than S24 SD.
        S24 SD import - warranty

    • +1

Tbh 2400 is not too bad compared to gen 2,
just less effiecent on low end https://www.socpk.com/cpucurve/

  • +5

I've been rocking one of these since its launch, it is just a great piece of phone, highly recommended.

  • How do you get the $30 off Perks?

  • +4

these dont have headphone ports so how does everyone use it, im guessing just get a usb c to headphone adapter… do they work ok? i dont want a bluetooth device that needs charging as i dont really use headphones a lot only really when i cut the grass.

    • +1

The adapter works great, I use the google one bought from JB if you sign up to JB perks you can use the $10 off welcome code to get it for $6.

    • +2

I think each USB-C to headphone jack has a DAC in them, so the quality of this is very important. I have a cheap one, and they are fine for when the volume is high, but anything lower and it cuts in and out. If you're using them during lawn mowing, then most should work fine.

      • +2

Many don't have a DAC as some phones have the DAC and supply analogue out through USB-C port. Have to be careful what you buy. Galaxy s23 looks like it requires an adapter with built-in DAC

        • Oh, thanks for that info!

      • +2

the basic ones from apple, samsung, and google have been benchmarked to be extremely good, and they're only around ~$10-$20.

    • I use Apple EarPods - Wired USB-C.

      • mate… thats apple… as if i would ever use that crap product.

        • Okay so which earphones do you use? The Apple ones are $29. Are there better ones in its price range?

          • @Nillionaire: it came with my samsung s10, its a white corded that plugs into my 3.5mm headphone jack in it.

How's the Samsung bloat and UI?

Refused to go back since owning a bloated S4.

    This or a pixel 8.

    • +2

Same decision-making here. Went from the Samsung S8 Note to a series of Google Pixel phones Still using the Pixel 5 now, but it's time to upgrade. Have become accustomed to the clean Pixel experience.

      • +9

        Tagging @HelpWanted

OneUI 6.1 is pretty good imo. Smooth, no intrusive ads or Bixby shoved in your face. Bloatware-wise, Samsung definitely does load up all their Google alternatives (ie. Browser, Email, Samsung Pass, etc.) but all can be removed either by uninstalling or disabling them, or do what I did and use ADB AppControl to remove them completely.

Refer to YT videos on OneUI for a brief look on how it looks, runs, features, etc.

        • +6

I used to dislike Samsung with the crap they installed and preferred Pixels. I have a S22 and was surprised how much Samsung have improved. Considering this deal or S24 instead of Pixel for next phone.

      • I came from the Pixel 5 and it's ok. While I prefer Pixel UI, OneUI is pretty consistent and I'm certainly not missing out on any features from the Pixel.
The massive improvements in battery life and performance are notable.
When Google finally switches to TSMC for tensor, I'll probably switch back (Pixel 10?)

    • I much prefer the Pixel experience or closer to stock Android, however, with Nova(caveat: ownership, it's good enough.

There's one occasional glitch with the screen freezing so I will probably look into an alternative at some point.

I've uninstalled or disabled many of the Samsung included apps. I've also replaced phone, messages and contacts with the Google ones.

      • Does Nova also have small visual glitches with the swipe system navigation gestures? Currently using Lawnchair and just putting up with it.

        • Not that i've noticed.

      • I tried Nova with the S4, was just extra faffing around to get a smooth pixel experience.

    • +2

I previously always stuck to "clean Android" so I had a Sony phone and would always recommend Pixels to people. But One UI has won me over, it's so easy to declutter by just uninstalling the handful of preinstalled apps and turning off some notifications. The extra features are so worth it and it runs as smooth as anything on the S23. In a way I get the feeling Samsung puts more effort into refinement than Google.

      • Has Pixel got something like "Modes and Routines" and "Security Folder" on Samsung?

        • Of course not.

They might in a future Android update 5 years away.

That's how it is with Pixel. One man's bloat is another's feature.

I remember 10 years ago buying a Galaxy Tab S 10.5 (still works) over a Google Nexus 10, because it's a tablet so of course it should have multi-window support - two apps running side by side. Chrome and YouTube, hello?

Of course it was considered "bloat" by Android purists, so the Nexus (…or any other manufacturer) didn't have it.

Other things that android phones didn't have, but later adopted from Samsung, include things like quick toggles from the notification panel, multi window / multiple apps on the screen, double pressing power button to launch the camera, and that's just all I know, definitely more… Themes? All considered bloat or "too complicated" for android purists back then.

Currently use a Galaxy S10, with no issues. I don't use Bixby now but when it came out, it was better than Google in terms of functionality (see old comparison videos on YouTube). The Bixby button has become my torch button which I find very useful. I prefer some Samsung apps over Google's, e.g. the Gallery app (photos are in folders, unlike Google Photos) and the Dialer and Contacts app (swipe left / right a contact to call or send them a message)

    • +3

Its gotten a hell of a lot better in recent years. One UI is pretty damn good vs the older Touchwiz experience you would have experienced before

      • +1

TouchWiz has good points, honestly didn't deserve the hate it (still) gets, it's introduced a lot of features that have become standard android features today.

Multi window is a major one that took google at least 5 years. Quick toggles on notification panel. I'm sure there's more, never felt any interest or reason to go with stock android.

That "clean" experience to me has always been a muted "boring" experience that has to be accompanied with additional apps. Stock android has become wayyyy better thanks to adopted Samsung features.

        • I really liked Samsung Experience (what was between TouchWiz and One UI)

  • +1

    Nice deal op.

Hope this would be a regular thing

  • Is this better than s22 ultra?

    • +2

Are you a current S22 Ultra owner?

      • No, considering to buy

        • the sd8g1 chip in the s22 series is dumpster fire, please don't ever consider phones using it.

  • No

  • I bit the bullet with amazon, advise? return once delivered and buy this? to save $100

    • Try to cancel it first

      • Thanks, I can't cancel it, already shipped according to amazon. Anyone ever returned unopen phone to amazon?

        • In my experience Amazon support can cancel it if option doesn't let you.

        • +1

Ya, just choose refund, then deliver to the nearest collection point, scan and done

  • has anyone bought it yet using both the $30 Perks and the TCN gift card? No issues with purchasing and it all works ok?

    • No issues…. Just let the cashier know about the perks discount first….. My cashier was a bit flustered when he saw the perks discount after starting payment with the gift cards. So basically perks first to get final price and then payment…. So easy actually…. Was my bad.

      • Ok thanks. Just had a few issues at Woolies with denominations but all ok.

    • It failed for me online, the perk showed as discounted to $691 but then still charged me $30 extra.
Am following up with JBHifi support.

      • Just an update.
TCN say the cards were not "activated" even though the receipt from Woolworths shows "ACTIVATED"

apparently TCN "activated" != WOOLWORTHS "activated"

Would really suck if you were in the store ready to purchase and told 1/2 of your cards are not functional. :-(

  • +1

Thank you OP, and friendly commenter pointing to Coles gift card alternative, managed to get this for 651 in the end. I used 9 Coles gift cards, a bit tedious, as you have to scratch and swipe each one. The jb guy was very helpful and patient.

  • +1

    eh…my S21 is still going

    • That's not the spirit! … Or is it. I forget!

    • I'm with my S10.

  • +6

I am on S20 FE and looking to upgrade. But would miss the micro SD card…

    • Same. Would want 512gb storage at least and s23+/ultra for the extra battery life and so it would feel a real 'step up' to keep a couple of years.

    • On a s20 plus 512GB. I want to upgrade but price differences between highend phones with 512gb to 128gb is huge and the inability to expand storage is infuriating since back in the day, it was considered a standard feature of all those high end symbian phones i bought.

    • +1

I was about to buy this until I saw your comment! Ill stick with my S20 FE for a bit longer.

  • This or razor 40 ultra for $799?

    • +1

This has better resell value, longer software support and faster performance.

  • Looks like Officeworks has price matched, including all the colours. ($721)

  • -1

S25 is coming in a few months. I think S24 will will be much cheaper in the next few months as well

    • +2

      I wouldn't say 7 months is a "few" months…

    • S23 has Snapdragon SoC.

  • Worth upgrading from S20 FE 5G?

    • I would say so.

    • -1

I'm going to go the other way and say no. Last year, I upgraded to a S22U from the S20FE 5G and IMO, it was not worth the money.

If there's nothing wrong with the S20FE, i'd hold out until the end of support or another generation depending on what's important to you.

  • +1

    Worth upgrading from an A52?!
Seems a bit of a downgrade in some respects.

    • It's an upgrade in every way. But if you are happy with your A52, you can consider go for the A55 when it is on sale for $5xx

  • Thanks op
