Pity the tele 40th isn't discounted. Love lake placid blue though.

Yamaha Pacifica 112v is better and cheaper than this.

    • +2

If my kid ever says he wants to learn guitar I reckon I’ll get a Yamaha, they seem like the best value for money

Never any love for the lefties. :(

    • +1

Ironically, all the Fender Ampro II’s and American 50/60’s that are available are lefties haha.

I’m chasing an ampro II / ultra and was hoping to snatch a good deal given at $2500 that’s pretty much what people are chasing for on the second hand market but no righties remain.

      • I picked up an Ampro II for about $1740 from Musos Corner in September last year; keep holding on for a sale! OzBargain post here

I think it’s worthwhile considering the Player Plus instead for the price at $1189

    • Jimi seemed happy enough with his lot.

  • +21

600 bucks is still a lot for a Squier.

  • +6

$600 for a squier (after40% discount)! Yikes… is that a classic vibe? Getting close to MIM territory

    • +1

Fender website is horribly overpriced, these are $600 w/o a discount at most music stores. Cheapest I've seen was ~ $480 at Sky Music once.

      • Can you link them then? Can't find any in stock in this colour for this price anywhere except the Fender site.

        • Ahh I did say was - this was around a year back? Either way, $600 is standard pricing, if you wait for a sale, you might save $50 - $100 off. You can also just go to the music store and try and negotiate $50 off or get a free bag and set-up, I've had some luck with that.

          • @jyueli: I mean, I don't agree. $600 is not an uncommon price, as in, if you waited around you might get it. It's not standard pricing though. You can't buy one for that anywhere else right now. Usually they're one offs though so you can't post them to ozbargain. I think this Fender sale is a first in that a lot of them are better prices than retail, and a lot of them are in stock in decent numbers. Don't see why it's worth downplaying this sale. It's unusual.

            • @Fredescu: Umm ok, it's pretty common? I mean maybe music stores sell for $50 more, but in my experience, $600 is not a bargain. It's the "street price".

Anyway this took me 3 seconds to find - https://www.bavasmusic.com.au/squier-40th-anniversary-strato…

Fender is slightly better, yes, but go to a music store and pay ~$600-$650 and if you're nice, they'll give you a gig bag and a setup.

              • @jyueli: Ymmv but most retailers aren't taking time away from their tech to give you a free set up for a $600 squier. If you're buying something they have some margin in, or you've bought stuff from them before, they might. Granted, if you get one off the shelf, it might have been set up already if the place does, so that is an advantage.

My point stands that this is currently the best available price for this guitar in this colour. It's not a mind blowing price but that fact alone makes it a bargain.

              • @jyueli: You only see that because Fender site is discounting this guitar. Asking a guitar shop to lower something like this cheap is like pulling a tooth. That was my experience when I got this guitar last year for $699. The guy almost yelled at me when I said Fender had this for $599 a few weeks before

  • Worth the upgrade? Or should I stick with my 20th anniversary Squier?

    • +1

I would look into the used market, much better value for money unless you are after a really new model (unlikely cause strats have been the same for the past 50 years…)

    • +1

It's worth it if you feel like it will in some way enhance your life, whether that being enthusing you to play more, looking good, or any other emotional boon.

  • Not a deal at this price

    • Not a deal when there’s only 9 available

  • +1

My first guitar was a Squire for $299, 25 years ago. Not too bad a price increase.

  • hmm, do i save up for the 41st anniversary model next year or the 42nd anniversary the year after ? more important would be “ what’s the special feature”

    • +1

I have the 39th anniversary model, and this is definitely an upgrade

    • TBF the 40th anniversary was last year. I'd actually totally grab one if it were a precision bass.

  • +3

Player Stratocaster (MIM) is going for 975.

I'd go for that for the extra 375 over a squire for 600.

  • +1

Is it just me or do rectangular in lays on a strat fret board look out of place?

    • Not just you. They work on Gibson but that's about it.

      • We should have a jam

    • I like the look, but it's a strange choice for 40th anniversary..

  • +1

    I want tele

  • It's been around this price for months at a couple of retailers. I wanted the Sienna Sunburst (red) but inconsistencies in the colours put me off as I want a brighter burst. Also the gold hardware tends to tarnish in the long term. Ended up buying a second hand Fender Standard (not Squier) in very similar colour but with standard chrome hardware for half the price.

  • Gees, never realised these now cost this much. Seems quite overpriced for $600.

  • Except for the anniversary bs, overpriced

  • Does this sound/play and different? What reasons would one choose this one a kit (with basic amp)?

Huge difference: these Classic Vibes are basically Made in Mexico quality guitars, but just made in Indonesia. The Squier you have linked is the lowest end one. If you're looking to muck around and not play seriously, sure it's a good kit - but if you want a guitar you can grow with and keep, then get the Squier. I have had a Classic Vibe Tele for the past 3 years and I like it better than most Made in Mexico ones I play at music shops.

Aside from staying in tune (which most of the major brands can do on even a 150$ guitar now), it comes down to very subtle factors that can genuinely feel huge if you're an every day kind of player and absolutely no difference if you're not. That being said, if you're going to pay that much, buy the yamaha pacifica because it has a very very good reputation. For the record, I routinely switch between a 200$ version and 1000$ version of a known guitar/model and I could live with the $200 one fine. The major brands aren't really making trash at any price point.

    • +1

There's a fair few things in terms of difference, but for what actually matters:

      • Tuners are more stable on the expensive model, which is a reliability/ playability aspect.
      • Pickups are higher quality on the expensive model, which are both more reliable and clearer sounding. At some point the pickup sound becomes subjective, but in the case between the Squier Bullet (which you linked) and the 40th Anniversary is an objective quality difference. That being said, it is worth mentioning that some recording guitarists might actually look for a cheap pickup sound, but that's far and few between (Justin Bieber's ETA is recorded with cheap pickups).
      • Similarly, electronics are better. Lower quality electronics can incur weird scratchy noises, or pick up radio signals etc.
      • Neck finishing. The 40th anniversary has more level and smooth frets (the metal wires on the neck). To be honest though neither are top-of-the-class in that aspect.
  • Sienna sunburst for me, but only just

i don't know how to play, but im a sucker for limited edition stuff. in for 1

  • Can I play Stairway to Heaven on this?

    • NO STAIRWAY

    • You’ll burn in hell… everyone know only Les Pauls have the God given right to play stairway..

      • Stairway wasn't written or recorded on a Les..

      • Gibson plays Highway to Hell….

  • Thanks. This sent me on a lovely journey of understanding more about electric guitars and what can be done with them and what Kurt Cobain liked.

the Fender Jagstang is at a good discounted price ;)

      ADHD ftw

    • Kurt like shotguns.

      • …but he
        Knows not what it means
Knows not what it means, and I say, "Yeah"

  • Had a beginners start years ago, 94, and sold it and now living with a Washburn Equis silver steel string acoustic with pickups and equipment and a few Ibanez 6 string and 7 string guitars.
I did enjoy the fluidity of the strat, sound wasn't too bad and easy to play. Great guitars from my limited experience but yeah all good.
