I went to buy these a few days ago when they were $99, which was the ATL price then. Now they are $89, so I'm nabbing them.

This is my first post so please go easy!

    • $24.94, 2 years ago BFS amazon.

  • I have 3 of these and they are brilliant. Got a set for the Computer, Garage and Caravan. Very good quality and loud. Highly recommend.

    • +5

I have 1 of these, and they have the poorest, cheapest sound among the stereo pair speakers in my house. Denon mini hifi system sounds better. The most budget Polk bookshelf speakers sound better. M-Audio monitors sound better. 2nd hand vintage Jamo from marketplace sound better. And I don't consider myself an audiophile or speaker snob.

      • +3

I agree. I bought it and sounded worse than some bottom of the barrel Logitech speakers. I had to return them.

I can only guess that I got a bad unit, with all the praise they get?

        • +9

I can only guess that I got a bad unit, with all the praise they get?

A lot of people are comparing these to the speaker inside your laptop, phone or even monitor, so yeah they are a step up from that but hardly any good in reality when compared to actual speakers.

          • +10

@coffeeinmyveins: The same type of people who claim soundbars are great despite never owning a real surround sound system.

            • +3

@PainToad: Haha, don't get me started on that. I had a 7.2 system (Paradigm and Jamo speakers with a 10" velodyne and 12" M&K subwoofers) paired with a marantz receiver. Some bloke was telling me how sonos soundbar is much better than whatever I would have and that I know nothing because I have not heard the sonos sound bar).

I only dismantled it all and got them away as we had a baby who started crawling around the house. I replaced it with the highest spec samsung Q9something soundbar thing, and it's orders of magnitude worse.

              • @CocaKoala: Next time the Q990D dips under $1000 I'm buying it. I have an ancient 5.1 setup that produces great audio but I want to simplify. I have a mess of cables running through the walls and behind the TV to make all this work, the receiver gets an Optical out from the TV for the audio signal as it can't handle 4K pass through properly. I just want to simplify, its probably not going to sound as good but the overall experience will be better as I can use the sound bar for everything including streaming audio.

I looked at the Sonos stuff too, overpriced imho but it has a niche.

                • +1

@Hank Scorpion: Why don't you just upgrade the amp? Sounds like all the wiring is hidden which is the biggest hurdle. No way I'd replace a proper surround system or even a really good 2.1 with a soundbar.

                  • @TheJoker: 1 - Cost, the Q990D on sale would be cheaper then a new amp that does all that. I could then move the current setup to the shed/cave.
2 - The front speakers are spaghetti on the ground and behind the cabinet, the rears are routed through the walls. Its a bit of a mess in front of the TV but mostly hidden behind the low line cabinet.

Ideally I'd go the whole hog and replace it with a new system but the cost would be too much, I paid a lot for the current one many moons ago

                • @Hank Scorpion: You could use your 5.1 setup for streaming audio by plugging a music streamer to one of free inputs. WiiM is great for that, I'm using 3 WiiM Pro's for 3 zones of multi-room audio. Works great, and budget friendly too (esp. on sale).

          • @coffeeinmyveins: Thank you! I suppose I'll keep my $$ in this case.

            • @CocaKoala: I will chime in to disagree - I would be surprised if you were disappointed at this price point. They perform very well in my experience. They also look great (with the dust shields off)

        • +1

i dunno, ozbargain love edifier. i think theyre crap even the expensive ones.

      • +4

Denon mini hifi system sounds better

I am sure it does for $900 vs $100.

I don't use Bluetooth on all of them. I run a Line In for most of them. Caravan is BT only. My two computers have relatively decent Audio Cards and seem fine. Good for Spotify, Foxtel and YouTube streams. Sometimes the one in the garage I feel can be too loud for the neighbours….

Might need to adjust your EQ settings and the Trebble+Bass on the speakers to improve the quality of audio you are hearing. Your Bass and Trebble could be too low or high.

        • I can only agree that my comparison is not fair as every other pair of speakers is more expensive, and some of them are passive speakers that need an amp. But regardless of price I can't describe Edifier as "brilliant", they are dull and underperforming ultra-budget speakers that are unable to deliver any listening pleasure. After hearing them once I will never be tempted to buy another pair or recommend them to anyone.

          • @mangoed: What would you recommend for $100?

Like are you saying all $100 speakers are shit, or that there are much better $100 speakers?

            • -3

@StorminNorman: $100 can get you some 2nd hand vintage hi-fi components that will sound heaps better than Edifier.
Otherwise, $100 can get you Philips SHP9500 - not quite the speakers, but your ears will thank you.

        • Sorry Mate. Your wrong.

The Denon Mini HiFi System Costs ~$1600.
          https://www.melbournehifi.com.au/collections/denon-compact-m…

He is comparing a ~$90 System to a $1600 one!

          HAHAHahahahaha!

      • Yeah I heard some in store and wasn't impressed, even my old Voll Bookshelf speakers sounded better. I was going to pick up something from the range to replace my 25 year old Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers on my media system in the office but I think I'll stick with them for now.

      • +4

Compare to things that cost <$100, not >$300

      • +1

Do you have an alternative recommendation for around $100?

I mean, it's obvious that speakers which are 5-10x the price would be better.

          • @scratchy: no way

            I have the t30s and the R1380

the Edifier speakers are lightyears better.

I got mine in 2022 so maybe things have changed now, or maybe people are getting shitty speakers. But complaining about them for this price is nuts.

        • If the budget is $100 and the goal is to get the best bang for your buck in terms of sound quality, I would recommend looking for 2nd hand offers on marketplace and gumtree. I recently grabbed a bundle of 2 Jamo floor-standing speakers (at least 10 years old but in great condition) + central channel speaker + Yamaha receiver for $150. The seller was asking "$150 ONO", I could probably get it cheaper, but decided the deal was too good to miss.

          • @mangoed: Sure that's great but some don't have the space for those plus an amp to drive them. In that scenario the Edifer is much more practical.

I have a B&W system with 5.1.4 but also use a set of Edifer for background music because they do the job.

            • -2

@Mechz: Practical? Sure. Enjoyable? Not so sure. My opinion is that life is too short to listen to crappy speakers. If you're a music lover and your budget is $100 and you can't find anything great second hand, get a pair of decent wired headphones (Philips SHP9500 are $100 on aliexpress) and enjoy music. But that's just my opinion, I'm aware that there's an army of Edifier fans and I have no problem with that.

      • +1 for the used marketplace

there isn't much innovation in speakers
        often see premium super cheap

  • +1

Would these be suitable for a small living room or would there not be a noticeable difference compared to the stock inbuilt TV speakers/UE Boom.

    • +8

basically anything is better than inbuilt tv speakers

      • +1

Not always, sometimes you get lucky and get a tv with great sound

    • +1

      Yes

    • Yes they are good for small room. Not for a big room though.

      • Is 3m x 4m too big for these?

        • +4

I use it in a room that size but sit close to my monitor. It would be enough as long as you don't expect earth shattering sound for movies.

  • +1

OP what's the difference between these and R1380T ? thanks

    • +7

R1380T: Lacks Bluetooth, Optical, and Coaxial inputs, only providing RCA and Line In input

      • thanks, bought a pair, my first ever set of bookshelf speakers, hope they wont be too much for my tiny desk.

      • +5

        unhelpful

          • +18

@bAps: People need to be reminded that a public forum's purpose is to discuss and share knowledge.

            • -1

@tacos4brekkie: I'd argue that every comment section being filled with very basic questions that can easily be googled makes it more difficult for people to engage in more nuanced discussion about the item.

              • +4

@bAps: where do you think the source of information that search engines like google rely on

years and years of web content including helpful online forums being crawled and indexed

              • +4

@bAps: That's a fair argument; though I would counter-argue once again that even very basic questions that can easily be googled count under a forum's overarching purpose to discuss and share knowledge.

We are dealing with a quite infinite space in internet forums, where you can have both simple discussion and knowledge-sharing (like this person asking the difference between x and y) whilst also having nuanced discussion about the product, sharing their anecdotal experiences etc.

Whilst it's true that it might make it more difficult for people to find more nuanced discussion amongst more simple questions and queries, I would argue that Google sometimes also makes it more difficult. What is easier? Googling "what's the difference between Edifier R1380DB and R1380T" or asking someone in the forum and getting a simple, straight, one-line answer? Google can sometimes flood you with ads and product placement as soon as you attempt to search a product. People's perceptions of trust and critical thinking on the internet have also evolved over the years - what's better - getting a response from someone you know is a person or scrolling to see that some of the articles have been auto-generated or possibly written by bots or AI? Google isn't the same as it was 10 years ago.

My counter argument is that it's okay to have both. The world won't go down in fire if both existed. :)

              • @bAps: 100% agreed. A lot of lazy people in every forum, including this one.

          • @bAps: I never understood people that participate on social media purely to tell others to stop participating on social media.

      • +3

imagine if people only replied with let me google that for you and googling just sent you in an infinite loop of people telling you to google it.

        • Sounds like The Matrix

        • imagine if people only replied

imagine if people only auto replied with chatgpt because its less effort than typing. auto reply plugin coming soon. you don't even need to be at your computer. you get on with your life and a bot is your terminally online presence. 😭

tbh though the end result probably won't be that different. with the bots programmed to be humanely dumb and have endless arguments to pass off as human.

fyi I had an existential crisis recently when a random user referred to me as nothing but a bot in forums. I brushed it off at first but then it creeped in. all of us are interacting like nothing more or less than bots. especially when emotional engagement and deliberate trolling/triggering is involved. online I'm nothing more than a bot what is the whole point of doing something which can be done by a few lines of code.

These have an optical input so can be used with modern TVs

That $1 monster optical cable from TGG suddenly became useful lol

    • +3

these come with a fibre optic cable anyway, so still a waste of $1 lol

      • Its not a Monster cable, just a cheapo china one.

        • +1

If you did a blind test I'm certain you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two cables

  • +1

Paywith Afterpay or Zip for no surcharge and to use CC.

  • Do these speakers work as rear speakers for a tv? As in can I have my soundbar hooked up and then add these as Bluetooth rears?

    • I don't have this model but I can say that most low- and mid-range TVs are lacking in the "user defined audio" area.
If you have HDMI audio output to the soundbar, and that soundbar can send another two signals out for 3.0 surround sound (or fake 5.0 surround sound), then probably yes. If you use a surround sound control unit that assigns audio, then definitely yes.

If you use the TV for this, then most likely no.

    • No, and even if they did, they'd have horrible latency.

  • +1

Bought the daughter a pair of these not too long ago. Seem decent enough where I always have to yell at her to turn down her (crappy) music

    • hahah I did the same but with 1280DB's. I now spend a good portion of my day saying "turn that garbage down".
I eventually wall mounted them with some cheap universal brackets from bunnings and can hear them distorting / rattling through the wall at high volume.

Oh well, at least it sounds better than the tinny, cheap Soniq TV speakers she was using.

  • Bought these last time, always want to pair a subwoofer for them, any recommendations?

    • these don't have a sub out, do they? Try the R1280DBS which are also on sale - or get one of the sets that come with their subwoofer (also on sale at the same place)

    • I haven't personally used these speakers, but adding a sub shouldn't be impossible if the sub accepts line level input.
It could potentially work if you connect the left channel speaker output to the sub, then from the sub to the left speaker?

You could take a look at a small inexpensive sub like the 8" one from DJ City

Or potentially find one on Marketplace?

  • I have Samsung Q930b hooked up to Samsung S90C via eARC. I have seen the TV has simultaneous optical output feature with eARC. So if I get these speakers and connect to the TV via optical, would I get a wider stereo soundstage combined with the Q930b? Will the Edifiers supports audio codecs like Dolby Digital Plus/ Atmos via the optical?

  • People who own these, Does it have good enough bass?

    • Bose enters the chat

      (ᇂ_Jᇂ )

    • +1

Not for bass heads. It's got some.

    • +1

Depends how much bass you want. It doesn't have a Sub, so expect okay bass from the main speakers.

    • It has as much as you'd expect from speakers of this form factor, but will not compete at all with a sub. It sounds "full" for normal speakers, not lacking.

But if you expect to "feel" bass, you'll need a sub.

  • +1

can be used with modern TVs

That is true but without a centre channel the experience will be louder but not any clearer.

    • Not quite, it will be a bit clearer because you have a fuller sound spectrum (imagine the difference between two 12" speakers versus one 1" speaker, when you're sitting several metres away). That the speakers can provide power to higher and lower frequences does tend to allow more separation and ability to pick out individual elements.

But a centre channel is better if the content has been produced with "dialogue in centre channel" in mind. I don't know how much of it has, though.

    • I find that two bookshelf speakers instead of TV speakers are great for clarity at very low volumes, and in medium volumes still hold their own. At high volumes for movies, tv shows and games, the positioning of both speakers and listener is absolutely critical to not lose clarity.

  • Is there a raw frequency chart on these speakers?
I’d like to know how to get a neutral-ish sound with EQ.

    • Just use your ears. The default settings (12 o'clock for both treble and bass) are intended to be neutral in a standard environment.

Set them up, sit where you're going to sit, close your eyes, and try a few different media/song types. Then go back and fiddle.

At the end, go back to 12 o'clock and try again. Most people find that they go crazy trying to custom tune, and end up satisfied with 12 o'clock. They're designed with that in mind.

  • How come the standard speakers never go on sale anymore, its always the bluetooth/active ones.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07NT6YN1L?ref_=ppx_hzod_title_…

I bought these for 60 bucks back in '21, they've gone waaaaay up in price.

edit: looking at their lineup I'm not even sure they make non powered speakers anymore. Wth.

  • +1

Thanks OP! Being hearing about these for years and just had a baby so have been looking for some high quality brown noise speakers heh.

Came to $85 delivered after the $5 signup discount, which seems pretty reasonable.

  • +3

I haven’t tested these but I want you all to know that I have the most superior ear.

    • Just one of them? Is the ear right on top of your head? That would certainly be the most superior.

    • +1

May I have a go of the ear when you are done please

  • I'm having trouble picking between the 1380DB and the MR4s. Any recommendations? (Happy for separate sets for each use case)

Use case 1: General gaming and working from home (desktop PC)
Use case 2: TV for watching movies/shows
Use case 3: Editing videos (Premiere Pro) on PC

From my research, I THINK the MR4s will be bad for TVs because they're supposed to be for "near field listening/monitoring".

Currently running z623 from however many years ago for like $99 lol…

    • You won't get close to the z623 for that sort of money.

      • oh are you saying that the z623 is better than the 1380DB and MR4? I see people dunk on Logitech all the time

  • any thoughts on comparing it with below? Creative Pebble Plus 2.1
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Creative-Powered-Computer-Speakers…

  • +3

Great speakers. You are not finding a better set of 42w Bluetooth active bookshelf speakers for this price. You would spend $300 plus to get an noticable improved sound stage and maybe nicer looking apeakers. Maybe something in Edifier range sub $300 but any other brand $300 plus.

  • Holy 13.95 delivery free, ended up paying $100 for them ;-;

    • Yeah, their Back To School sale says free shipping when goods over $79, with T&Cs. But I can't find the T&Cs anywhere. Also being asked $13.95 for shipping. Perhaps based on weight or size of box.

  • +1

Ive had the R1280db for 5 years and are great for a small to medium room with line in or Bluetooth. I agree with the majority who say you need to remember they are around $100 !! you cannot beat that sound and bass for the price imo. Also have the D12. Awesome for the price. Great company for budget non audiophile sound but I still consider myself a huge music and multimedia lover so still think they offer very decent sound but I'm not willing to spend thousands for better.
Also bought the creative pebble Bluetooth ones and thought they sound sh!t compared to these. I find the bass on these fine and solid/v decent

  • Not getting free shipping in Brisbane, asking for $16.95 :(
