Thanks, max is three per customer it seems. I got 3 for $11 shipped which is pretty good. Monster cables are suuuuuper overpriced, but at this price it's a good deal.

    Hey look, cost price

  • +13

Wish i could see Gerry Harvey's face expression

    • +11

Gerry must have made so much money successfully convincing every second customer they needed Monster Cables for the best picture from their new DVD Player.

I fell for it, I’m sure many people did.

      • I remember been at a mates house and he was showing off is new TV & DVD player, and how good a bargain he got on the Monster HDMI cables because it was a package deal - from like $200 down to $50

        • +9

You're just jealous of his picture and audio being so amazing compared to your setup with puny sub-$200 cables. 😋

          • +1

@McFly: 100% - I'd never seen such colour, clarity or sharpness before or since!

            • +2

@Randolph Duke: Even in real life. The video would have been so much better than seeing something directly with your own eyes in real life.

  • +1

    Cheers, got 3 for pickup

  • +1

Bought 2, no idea what for lol

    • -1

      Welcome to the club!

    • +16

You've taken stock away from someone who could have actually used it.

      • -4

        Reread the site rules champ.

        • Why?

          • +17

@PainToad: Rule: Buy first, think later.

            • @shxhshzhz: Rule 2: FOMO is a biatch

            • +39

@shxhshzhz: Why? This is very niche in 2024. I bet most poeple don't even know what's it for and only have setups that use HDMI. If you have "no idea" why you brought all you've done is 1) Waste a dollar 2) Waste your time picking it up 3) Taken stock away from someone who could have used it.

              What does that achieve?

              • -1

                @PainToad:

                Why?

                It's a $1…

@PainToad: Did you just sign up to ozbargain. This is an argument an ozbargain noob would make.

@PainToad: Exactly my point. Did you just grow a buyer conscience overnight?

                    • +29

@easternculture: This "haha I wasted money on something I don't need or even know what it is" was not a thing when I signed up. It was about saving money, not wasting money.

                      • +1

@PainToad: My philosophy (thanks to my mum) has always been to buy once and buy multiple for "later on."
And my dad is all about percentage savings on RRP.
                        So because of my parents,
I now have an order for 3 of these $1 cables for pickup 25km away.

      • I did the same, Sorry

      • I've got a soundbar so will probably use it for that. 😭 this is you. 🤑 this is me

        • +14

Why? If you're using HDMI already there's no advantage (and depending on the setup could be worse).

          • +16

@PainToad: Exactly. These guys buying for the sake of buying something they don’t even have a use for.

The “savings” gives them a high. It’s a form of addiction and they don’t even realise it.

          • +1

@PainToad: I prefer optical to HDMI for the soundbar I have in the games room.
Unfortunately none left. So no spare for me.

          • +3

@PainToad: I beg to differ. I run a PS4 pro and a media box on my TV to get 4k through HDMI and then run an optical cable to my AV receiver for the audio. Why? Because my receiver is old and can't output 4k video with HDMI.

This way I can still get 4k picture and awesome surround sound. This cable has it's uses.

            • +2

@pufffdragon: I do the exact same thing for our PS4s and PS5s, in both my mancave and the home theatre, so I'm with you there.
Not sure why some people have to hate on optical so much.

              • +6

@SupermanPrime: No-ones hating on optical but if your devices can take HDMI, you are almost always better off using HDMI. Its only useful for soundbars or TVs that dont have Arc / e-arc or require optical as well as for very old receivers. The problem is people buy these but have no use for them, may actually be taking them away from the people who are stuck with requiring them due to old hardware.

I never said it didn't for some people. I personally run an optical cable because the HDMI ports on my amp died years ago.

But if you have working HDMI (like 99% of people buying this probably have) there's no need to switch to optical.

      • “Thanks. Kid’s crying”

    • One for each inlaw

  • Excellent! I needed a new one.

  • Awesome, thanks for this! I have a feeling I needed one but cannot remember why.

  • Thanks OP, bought one.

  • Amazingly difficult to find the full spec's of this cable. I think this is TOSLINK at both ends?

    • +1

      According to Officeworks specs:
      https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/monster-m1…

It has 1 male optical connection and 1 male 3.5mm audio connection.

      But JW contradicts this:
      https://www.jw.com.au/product/monster-m1000-digital-fibre-op…

      Connector 1 TOSLINK
      Connector 1 gender Male
      Connector 2 TOSLINK

      • +2

The picture that Monster made is rubbish, and their web page doesn't even say.
You'd think that for such overpriced cables they would list everything, up to and including what star sign each cable was made under.
As Jimmil44 says, Officeworks person probably looked at the crappy picture and thought it was a 3.5mm connector. On first glance I actually thought it was a mini TOSLINK connector too.
I'd trust the JW one over them, although even JW seem to acknowledge one end has a problem with it's gender identification…

        Edit: Oh, it's on Amazon - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16086184/redir

    • +8

Correct, TOSLINK at both ends. Officeworks is wrong, converting from TOSLINK to 3.5mm audio jack would require powered electronics. I assume whoever does the descriptions at Officeworks took a look at the cross section of the cable picture and assumed it was 3.5mm.

      • +7

There's a connection for optical that uses the same size connector as the 3.5mm audio jack. It's not converting digital to analog. It's just a different termination.

The Google chromecast audio is one example - it uses the same port for digital and analog audio.

  • +1

Monster, the company that makes overpriced cables.

  • -1

    Didn't need any, but I bought 3 …

  • +3

No idea what I'm going to do with my extra $165 now!

    • +2

Maybe buy the $165 extended warranty to cover you another 5 years

  • +4

wonder if you can price match at officeworks from $89.95 to $0.95

    • +2

If they still have stock by the time you get to an OW store then I can’t see why not.
The only thing that might ruin that plan is many retailers won’t match items on clearance so it’ll depend on who you speak to and how helpful they are feeling.
Give it a whirl though if you have an OW close by.

  • +2

    woo, my 1st Monster cable!!

  • Always dreamed of having one of these. Thanks OP.

  • +2

    Alright guys

Order Update from The Good Guys: Your order is ready for collection!

Looks like they are in hurry to flip the stock.
The supplier must have accidently delivered Gerry's pallet to TGG

  • -1

So do these cables require devices that can encode/read optical signals or is that built into the cable?

Gotta love the valuable members of our community ready to neg anything they feel isn’t up to their own personal level of knowledge.
Never ask a question my friend instead make sure you let anyone else with a question know how stupid their question is & Well done champ you make this community a better place ;)

    • +1

They require devices with Toslink ports.

    • +2

is a $1 dollar like two dollars?

  • Yay cheap monster cable. Still hate them tho.

  • Ready for pickup

  • +4

Sweet, I needed a new belt, this'll do nicely

    • +2

      A 3m belt. Oh. My.
I will use mine as a 3 metre measurement device.

      • Perhaps a 3m skipping rope?

        • +1

          High fibre skipping regime.

    • jimbo jones?

  • +1

    3 for $3 delivered!

    • me too, the load is making the TGG site buggy haha

    • same here!!!
      hopefully they still honour it

      • Iirc the $3 delivery option was via AusPost. There was a $5 option too which another carrier.

    • same delivery showed as $8 but was free right before payment due, hopefully they honor it

  • Can someone explain what the other end of the cable is? I have an optical cable now that goes from PC > sound system control pod (Z5500) bot have toslink ends but the Monster M1000 only has one end like that, the other is just round.

    • +2

pretty sure that the image on the listing is just a stupid way of showing that it's an optical cable. It should be toslink both ends

    • +1

The other end might be one of those fragile glass ends that tend to break easily.
The glass connection is one of the reason that Optical/Toslink wasn't very popular.

      • It's not glass, it's optical plastic. Which is why it bends so easily.

    • +4

It should be the same on both ends. I think the pic on the website is just showing what the fiber optic cable looks like without the end connector, if that makes sense.

      Edit: A proper picture

      • ooh thanks DGrayson, hopefully that's true. Looks like a good cable.

I came across this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcQEd7ss6lQ) which shows the other style (the one in the OP link) which says to be a mini-toslink used on laptops and some audio devices. Thought perhaps this was the case & maybe the $1 means it's not a big seller shrug

Hopefully someone will confirm when they receive theirs :)

    • +2

That's just a graphic of the cable cross section.

      • oh yes, I think you may be right.

    • I was thinking the same thing when I saw the pic. Nice to see that gen speakers still about lol. I'm still using my Z5400s and when I first bought an auto cable one end was TOSLINK but the other was the 3.5mm/pin style -_- … luckily my Dad had a spare which I've "borrowed" for the last decade. Finally got one (plus spare lol) to give back and it's a Monster brand too lol

(well, will know for sure if/when I receive them)

  • +3

This is the first time I've seen a Monster cable that was correctly priced.

  • No idea what I'll use this for, but I reckon I might buy a desktop dac with optical in now that I've got a cable 😂

    • Off memory (and I could be wrong) the jitter tolerances allowed in toslink are higher than using less fancy coaxial copper cabling with BNC connections. Toslink isn't a serious consideration for audio nuts.

I still use toslink for the TV to stereo hookup.

No idea why people are getting excited about this. Toslink cables are dirt cheap, it's not worth going to pick up in person or paying delivery for.

      • that might be right, but when I'm referring to a ~$200 dac, ~$200 headphones, I wouldn't worry about it

  • Bought 1 in case i ever need it but not sure what i'll ever use it for

  • +3

Bought 3 to make optic fiber clothes line. Thanks op!!!

  • Can't be delivered to your location. I m in Sydney.

  • Any promo codes before I hit the pay button?

  • Can't deliver to Perth and I'm not driving to Bunbury :(

  • What even are these? Can someone please tell me if these might be useful for someone without a TV

    • +2

Used for audio signal transfer in the late 1990s

      • +1

It's still used but most people don't listen to stereo music on wired speakers.

    • Sure, if you have a CD player and amp with TOSLINK connectors.

  • Damn I actually wouldn't mind these but they wont deliver to me for some reason :(

  • -4

    All orders cancelled price error

    • @easternculture - is your pickup cancelled?
