You can buy excellent 4L of the extra virgin olive oil for 49$ in Aldi.

    • +2

I'm assuming you are referring to Remano Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3.78L for $49.99 which is Product of Spain.

      • +17

Without having tried this specific oil, typically Australian stuff is significantly better than Spanish/Italian stuff. And we're Italian haha.

        • +12

id just like to say Australian oil is rubbish compared to overseas oil. you would know this if you have lived overseas in Europe esp Greece or Lebanon.

We pay an arm and leg for Australian oil which does not taste any good. I brought over oil from cyprus - cost was nothing as part of my luggage taste is on another level. They pay far less then what we do.

          My personal opinion.

          • @Retarded Lunatic: Pali olive oil is the best.

It's taste is strong that you can feel a burning sensation on tongue when you lick it raw

            • +2
            • +1

              @easternculture: Maybe it's rancid ?

              • @Wombat cave: Nah that's fresh after cold press

                Actually maybe it's this lol

Olive oil produces a distinctive throat-stinging sensation because it activates a pain receptor called TRPA1, and there are many of these receptors in the throat. A study led by Catherine Peyrot des Gachons used biopsied tissues from the oral cavity to show where TRPA1 is expressed

            • @easternculture: That’s not a good thing. That burning flavour is the taste of rancid oil I’m afraid.

          • +1

@Retarded Lunatic: I'm no expert but in my european travels (not greece or lebanon) id say there is plenty of average oil over there, it's not universally great in my experience. There is also personal preference.

            • -3

@Xizor: yep you are correct that average oil is pretty much same as Australian oil.

              • +1

@Retarded Lunatic: There are plenty of places to get lovely olive oil outside the supermarkets if so inclined. Have bought some really nice stuff from vinyards/farms/olive groves during regional travel. But yes a far cry from being readily available at a cheap price.

                • -2

@Xizor: true im just saying Australian olive oil aint that great for the price you pay i mean the red island and colbram

                • +1

@Xizor: Great olive oil and olives around central vic in the gourmet region. Much better than the supermarket stuff. Great wines too

            • +3

@Xizor: I love my Lebanese brothers, but lebanon isnt in europe.

          • +6

@Retarded Lunatic: Cobram Estate is objectivity great mass market olive oil by global standards.

Objectively speaking olive oil from smaller producers like Mount Zero is great high end oil by global standards.

The trouble with European olive oil is that it's often not truly EVOO, despite the labels, and a lot of the stuff is rancid by the time it gets to Australia.

            • @prhino: doesnt excuse the fact that what they are producing isnt that great here for the price you pay

              • @Retarded Lunatic: Now you're changing your argument. You were saying Australian olive oil sucks, now you're saying it's overpriced.

            • @prhino: My friend has a property in Nairne SA. Produces great olive oil. But even at these prices she won't be celebrating.

            • @prhino: Taralinga Estate the love project of Salta Properties Tarascio family is another god tier aussie EVOO to check out.

          • @Retarded Lunatic: That might be true if you are getting true olive oil. The stuff you get on the shelf that claim to be olive oil could be blended or not even olive oil

          • +2

            @Retarded Lunatic: Username checks out

          • +2

@Retarded Lunatic: I should have said the overseas oil we get here. Definitely plenty of good local stuff you can only get in Europe.

Personally I find Australian stuff to be as good as anything even our rellies make in Italy. Fresh olives, single and cold pressed - generally!

          • -7

@Retarded Lunatic: Olive oil from south lebanon is to die for.

            • @alz: Get over urself lol

              • @sauce2k: I think people don't realise it was a joke

              • @sauce2k: Im for real, olive oil originating from my grandparents village tastes out of this world.

          • @Retarded Lunatic: According to one of the overweight woman at work, everything is always better in and from Lebanon.

    • +2

This is much better than Aldi, that it's also been reduced to 3.78l from 4

  • +15

If we pay these ridiculous prices they will hold the price up if we buy an alternative that's cheaper they will lower the price.

The poor naive supermarkets are being manipulated by Big Olive Oil.

    • +1

I don't think we have much choice, prices aren't going up. It's the value of our money going down 📉

      • Prices for Olive Oil have actually gone up from lower supply and the same demand. I was in Spain in 2023 and 2022 and the Spanish were very annoyed buy the higher prices.

  • +6

Don't pay these prices, use less oil in your food maybe 😂 I have switched to ghee and use less and less. Can't keep up with the extra virgin olive oil

I can’t help but picture you cooking in one of those brazilian jujitsu robes.

    • +1

Still awaiting a deal on olive oil.

    • Wanted to use Coconut Oil, but overpowering taste. Ended up moving to ghee for the health benefits.

      • try deodourised coconut oil - removes the taste and smell

    • +3

What about your health…? Ghee is almost entirely saturated fat, olive oil has very little, on top of many other health benefits

      • Well, I have started putting a small amount in my morning latte to have that kick 😂 There was no taste change I could tell, I don't know if it's healthy tbh

        • Ghee or olive oil?

      • An early death is better for your wallet, adding bargain points to this idea.

      • -1

Sat fat isn’t the boogie man the sugar industry would have us believe…

      • For people on keto diet, this and coconut seems to be a good choice compared to seed oils. At least that’s what some experts insist

Aldi sells The Olive Tree Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3 litre in tin for about $32.

The ALDI equivalent is slightly cheaper if you can find stock - 3L for $45.99

      • -1

I bought it last month, maybe 6 weeks ago or so I think about $32, vow that much price increase in one month.
Btw, i found this while searching it at Aldi, they probably only post to Brisbane or Qld around Brisbane, I am not sure. Same 3 lt oil for $29 https://www.ridezula.net/product-page/aldi-the-olive-tree-au…

All the f*****g food and utility companies are taking us all for mugs….profit gouging par excellence.

It'll then be the government that gets blamed for higher inflation, when it's these multi-million dollar-a-year execs who are really to blame.
They'll quite happily put up products by 20%+ in one go, then baulk and cry poor when you ask for an 8% pay rise to pay for it!

@alidli: That's why 200,000 Australians are leaving in a year. Mostly the younger generation who can't afford a house.

          • +1

@alidli: You know there is a worldwide shortage of olives due to disease and drought and the price of oil has gone up in every country?

            • +1

@dtc: Domt believe it for a second. Every week someone else is experiencing shortages and smashing prices up. Its ridiculous.

      • Costco have 4L of the Olive Tree extra virgin olive oil for $56, so slightly cheaper if you have a membership.

      • Yeah bought it for that last weekend, even at $46 it's still the best value EVOO that is 'ok' atm.

  • What's wrong with this one: La Gina Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3.78L for $50 anyday

    • +1

It's not really much more oil, and the la Gina stuff is really ordinary.

    • La Gina is Woolworths own brand, and is "packed in Italy from multiple sources"

"Packed in Italy from multiple origins"

  • Wow, this used to be $29 in the old days.

  • will this go lower than $50 in future when on special?

  • How easy (messy) are these to decant into the 750 ml bottles

    • Great question!

    • It's not too bad.. although not going to lie. I do not look forward to this task.
I find its easier to remove the plastic insert from the 750ml bottle (not sure what its called, the thing slows the pour), then use a plastic funnel.

Not removing the plastic insert causes mess, or did for me the last few times.

    • Better to get olive oil in a cask. See my other comment below.

    • If you're talking about the 750 ml Cobram bottles, it's a little difficult to remove the pourer from the bottle, but once that's off the rest is easy with a funnel. No mess.

  • +4

Hopefully the RBA isn't using increases in the cost of Cobram as a heavily weighted factor for the degree of inflation determination.

Prices are high because it has been poor crops for farmers, here and overseas https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2023-10-12/australian-extr…

    • +11

Yeah but realistically would prices ever drop again. These days it feels like supermarkets or the supply chain will use any excuse to raise the price then just keep it there…

      • +1

People charge what they can not what they need.

It's either called greedflation or capitalism, depending on who you ask.

      • Just look at Avacardo or Banana prices. Both of these fruits went crazy high a few years back.

        Back to normal prices now.

      • Remember bananas at whatever ($50/kg) due to shortages? And now it’s done to $3/kg in season?

  • Coles/Reddy Express are clearing their Coles branded Olive Oil $8.50 for 500ml, $2.50 for the spray

    • I think that would be a refined olive oil.

  • What are your thoughts on canola oil as an alternative? Oil gurus of OzB

    • +1

Depends on the use case, but heaps of restaurants (including high end ones) often mix canola oil in with olive oil.

    • To fry it's ok. Forget dressing a salad with canola and being happy

    • When cooking Asian food or deep frying, my favourite is peanut oil. Canola for deep frying or frying for that matter can make the food smell a little fishy.

      • Fresh canola isn't too bad for frying, but it doesn't seem to take long for it to start spoiling and really leaving that fish smell

    • Machine oil that was modified for human consumption (Canola is “Canada Low Acid”). Restaurants use it cos it’s cheap, has a high smoke point and imparts almost no flavour. Better off using extra virgin olive oil or butter imho.

    • It depends. Health wise I’ve been told to avoid it

  • I ordered some of this, which works out at about the same price ($17.50/l vs $16.66) and is likely a bit better.

    https://www.sherwoodsprings.com.au/our-products/p/ss4sjhyjwl…

As a bonus, it's packaged in a cask.

I'll report back once I've tried it.

  • +1

I heard it oxidises and better finish it within 30 days from opening. Unless you are running a restaurant, it may not be a good choice

    • Best before date is consumed within 3 months, according to the same company diff farm Red Island bottle I have in front of me.

    • Is this true? I was planning to buy but I thought I could use it slowly for like a year, no way I can finish the whole can in a month lol

  • can't believe this is $65 normally
