The Olive Tree Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3L $45.99 @ ALDI

150

Australian extra virgin olive oil supply is increasing but prices are still high (similar to European situation). That's $15.33/L If you need some now, Aldi has good prices, but will be snapped up quickly.

Also, 1L bottles are $18; 750ml slightly better value than the 1L bottles.

  • Are 1L bottle $13.50?

  • I find this oil amazing. Wondering who the producer is. Has to be Cobram…

  • -3

Cheaper at the local continental delis….

You can get 4 litres of excellent EVO, 0.3 for between $50-$60

    • +7

      continental delis

      Aussie EVOO or continental "EVOO"?

  • Can't see that deal. When does it start?

    • +3

In store now subject to stock levels.

  • Seems we have been educated to the new prices.

    • Prices will have to drop after supply normalises, else Cobram's volumes will reduce relative to foreign and substitutes.

      • +4

        Hope so.
I miss discounted Australian Olive Oil. Luxury item now.

      • +2

It'll never drop back to old prices, forget it

Why is wine $3 for 750ml and 750ml of olive oil $11

    • +1

Good question. Both are just fruit juices.

    • -2

Cause of marketing (adverse news articles to prime us up) and what the market will bear.
Same thing happened with Coffee and chocolate.

    • +2

      Ingredients.

Wine is made from water with some grapes while olive oil is made from only olives.

      • There's a pretty small limit to how much water you can add to grape juice in the wine making process, 70ml per litre, and that's only used to reduce sugar content. All the rest of the water comes from the grape. So 93%+ of the ingredient compared to 100%.

        • +2

grape vines start producing fruit much quicker than olive trees

also the yields are much lower for olives than grapes

        • I stand corrected 👍

    • +3

Why is wine $3 for 750ml and 750ml of olive oil $11

Because time is music the planets make.

    • I was wondering the same a few weeks ago. Googled and ABC had an article earlier this year saying that local Australian weather plus soaring overseas demand for Italian olive oil has meant supplies are short here hence the price rises this year. Hopefully be lower next year.

    • Olive good health, alcohol bad.

    • Why do you think?

  • +6

That’s insane, on February the price only $31.49. Now $45.99.

    • Yeah, who knew, eh? I would have stocked up on a couple of cans. Sad thing was Woolworths had a special on Cobram Robust, which after incentives, made it around this price, but I only bought a couple of bottles to avoid it going rancid.

      • Same!!!

  • So where us this oil made in Australia its definitely not cobram!

    • +1

There are so many evoo producers, it could be anyone

      • +1

But who has 70% of the market? Aldi aren't going to get supplies from 100 different mom and pop farms.

      • +2

I have a 1L one at home and the bottle and pourer look like the Red Island. Have a Cobram bottle and they use the spring loaded spout annoying things. Assuming the bottling is the same but different labels so that might be wrong. The label has the same colours as Cobram.

        • The pourers look like every other 1L supermarket brand

  • Been out of stock at a couple of Aldi's I've visited in past 2 weeks. Will check again.

    • Same, been looking for about a month. All sold out. Only the 1L and 750mls.

  • Due to the price hike, I switched to another Aussie Olive Oil in Harris Farm the other day when I saw it's on special. The downside of the other one is its bottle's quite tall, so, it might not fit many kitchen cabinets.

Recently purchased some Red Island EVOO from Coles $25 for 750ml.. $.$
Some vampire called Bryan Johnston suggested I start implementing it into my diet so I can live for 200 years.

Is this EVOO considered good quality or meh average?

    • +1

      Jeez that's a lot.

Re Bryan Johnston, check out Michael Greger's review of scientific research on EVOO - no strong evidence of causal benefit.

This one most likely from Cobram and at least as good as the Red Island (also by them).

      • Yeah felt a bit steep, probably should have waited for a sale.
        I'll have a read, thanks!

        • +2

Don’t think it will be on sale until the olive oil shortage in Europe ends. Maybe next year?

About a year ago, I bought 6 bottles of 1L Red Island for $10 a bottle. Finished my last bottle last month.

Switched to this Aldi Australian one recently.

  • Since the huge price increase, I’ve switched from EVOO to Sunflower for general frying.

Only use EVOO for salads and dipping these days.

$4L vs $18L is quite a bit of difference.

  • +2

fark. i remember stocking up on red island 3L cans for $18 each from woolworths. i've just run out …

  • +1

Man I really should start rationing my 3 l can

  • What does everyone use to put these into for daily use? Something that won't just come out in a large volume.

    • +2

i just refill a 1 litre olive oil bottle

      • works ok filling it with those little plastic things blocking the entire opening? Will give it a go thank you.

      • Sometimes the fancy ones have the flexible plastic hose spout. How do you Refill those?

    • Something like this

Premium Oil Sprayer for Cooking, 2 in 1 Olive Oil Dispensers https://amzn.asia/d/0aEDVWe4

    • You can also use empty alcohol bottles. Glass. Sturdy. Wide mouth. Easy to Refill and wash. Lasts forever.
