So, turn it on, get the gift card, then turn it off and wait for the next promotion—just rinse and repeat.

The person at the Costco counter advised me that it is only redeemable once for every member

      • +1

Correct. They record it in the account.

      • +2

Last time they said I have redeemable a gift(forgot what that) so can't redeem for another offer .

      • So if I did it last year we can’t do it again now?

        • +1

yes.. please try and let us know though

        • +1

          No harm trying.

You are allowed to change your mind after enabling, and change your mind again to give it another shot.

Got a cooler bag with random goods for enabling auto-renew in 2022, off and on again got a slab of water worth $10.99 in 2023, rinse and repeat got a $10 gift card in 2024. Will try again before16/March.

        • I gave a fake membership number last time around. I changed the last 3 digits as the Costco employee was writing it down :D

    • +13

Apparently you should turn it on in front of them so they can witness it. I had it turned on already and got into a debate about it at the counter. Was able to get the $10 in the end

Insane. Does the voucher come out of the check out person's take home pay?

        • +11

Once went back to claim a refund for something that went on special after I bought it, I was served with the darkest of attitude. It was as if I had kicked her mum, dog, and then took money out of her bank account.

@t25: Once tried to pay using Vanilla prepaid Visa, the checkout person refused and called the supervisor who also took a stand not to accept.

I used the same card to renew membership at the front counter 30 minutes earlier no one said a thing. Also used both Vanilla Visa and Master cards before and after that particular instance no less than 10 times without any issues.

It was just that one time with that one checkout person who had beef with it. Still a mystery if there's a policy not to accept prepaid cards.

            • @browser: Ages ago, I had tried to pay using prepaid visa/mc on their website but it wouldn't work.
Called up and was told it was policy not to accept those cards.

              • @Zippy7: It doesn't work on website because of 3DS, prepaid cards will never work because it's not registered to anyone and there is nowhere to send the authentication code.

In store is different, no one asks a question when the payment goes through, that checkout person only made things difficult because he saw the hand written balance on the card.

Guess that policy is not vigorously enforced, officially they don't accept, but who cares if they get paid.

      • "Apparently you should turn it on in front of them so they can witness it."

I was told the opposite at Costco Epping counter. They said do it on the app and come back 24 hours later, as their system takes that long to update. Sounds dodgy. Maybe they think I will just forget and not come back?

Can’t find the auto renew in the app

    • +1

"My Costco" at the bottom, scroll down to "Renew Membership", then "Auto Renew".

You need to add a payment method if not already, in order to enable auto renew.

Whens costco docklands going to close down, seems like they're milking it a bit

    • What do you mean milking? You’re willing them to close down??

      • I mean i live near it and canceled my membership back in October because i didn't want to wind up being stuck in a membership with it gone suddenly. Seems like they could have withheld the news they were moving for a lot longer.

        • You know you can refund the membership at any time and get a full amount back?

          • @ricadam: I do, but can it be done over the phone or email? Doubt it. I live inner city I don't want to drive out to a Costco just to get a refund on a card. None of the employees could give me an accurate date they are closing either

    • As soon as the Ardeer store is ready. There's still construction on the roads outside it.

  • Does it work for the business membership too?

    • Sure does.

  • my membership ends on end of March, can I turn on auto-renewal now, get the $10 GC before 16th Mar, and switch off the auto-renewal?

where we currently live doesn't have a Costco close-by anymore, and over the past year we've only visited like 3 times.

suppose we can buy 2* $25 GC with cash, and this $10 GC for free, and that'll cover us for the next year?

much cheaper than the membership for the limited occasional visit….

    • So I normally get my aunt a costco GC or 2 cause they arent near enough to justify a membership and generally her and my uncle go in with 1. But reccently they went to docklands costco (9th Feb) and only 1 person could go in with the GC and she had to sign in/register when going in.

      • ah, good to know, however could be work around with going in with 2 GCs, and not spend one of them?

    • -6

Oh, absolutely! I just love the privilege of paying for the chance to spend even more money. Nothing beats the thrill of flashing my membership card like an exclusive VIP—right before battling a shopping cart traffic jam for a 3Kg tub of peanut butter and a lifetime supply of toilet paper. Totally worth it!

Is hating on Costco a badge of honour for OG Ozbargainers or something? Old mate has 44 comments in nearly 18 years and decided to blow one on this gem.

    • +2

bro's never had a $2hotdog with a drink… that relish and onion is THE combo

      • +2

Maybe he had, but now requires membership to buy hot dogs so he's pissed about it.

        • how do they check? the selfserve counter is unmaned.

          • +1

@godofpizza: You need to scan your membership card (or barcode from app) to get into the ordering screen.

I’ve recently had an encounter at Costco which I felt it was dodgy af. Membership lapsed in 31/December/23 and when I went to renew last year in late-Feb (didn’t visit any Costco in-between) they were going to only renewal all to Dec/24. Thus two months shorter than a full 365-days of membership from the day I renew!

That’s a hell no for me, so I cancelled on the spot and sign up again so my membership renewal is now end of Feb.

Just telling all to watch out if your Memership has lapsed a while back, Costco’s default renewal process maybe a lot shorter than a whole year’s worth of membership. Even the admin staff was like “nothing we can do”.

Of course, this might not be a big deal to you but certainly am to me when you’re paying $65 for only 10-months of membership, which is BS in my books.

    • Yes this is the rule, a lapse of less than 2 months backdates to the original membership date, more than this and it starts again. Continuous membership is useful if you want to take something back after warranty expires, but if you only bought food then let it lapse for the full 2 months

  • do you need to use the app or can this be done via the website?

  • Can you set up Auto-renew in store if you don't have the app on your phone?
