    • If you're talking about the 750 ml Cobram bottles, it's a little difficult to remove the pourer from the bottle, but once that's off the rest is easy with a funnel. No mess.

    • Easy as long as you do it slowly and open the 2nd hole on the can to stop the vacuum when pouring.

  • +5

Hopefully the RBA isn't using increases in the cost of Cobram as a heavily weighted factor for the degree of inflation determination.

  • +1

Prices are high because it has been poor crops for farmers, here and overseas https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2023-10-12/australian-extr…

    • +17

Yeah but realistically would prices ever drop again. These days it feels like supermarkets or the supply chain will use any excuse to raise the price then just keep it there…

      • +5

People charge what they can not what they need.

It's either called greedflation or capitalism, depending on who you ask.

      • -1

Just look at Avacardo or Banana prices. Both of these fruits went crazy high a few years back.

        Back to normal prices now.

        • +1

Those are fruits with a very short shelf life and very short supply chain.

Olive oil is a manufactured product, and it can be stored. You aren't dealing with a farmer that needs to sell product within a few months lest they end up with nothing but rotten fruit, you are dealing with a corporation (and organised crime in some cases)

          • @greatlamp: Should convert avocado to avocado oil then it can be stored. The oil is just as good

            • @spc12go: Avocado oil does exist, it is far more expensive.

      • +1

Remember bananas at whatever ($50/kg) due to shortages? And now it’s done to $3/kg in season?

    • There was a good story on landline about it last weekend. Included interviews with owner of Cobram explaining what is going on in the market.
Also stuff like did you know that olive trees only give a good crop every second year …

Coles/Reddy Express are clearing their Coles branded Olive Oil $8.50 for 500ml, $2.50 for the spray

    • +1

I think that would be a refined olive oil.

  • What are your thoughts on canola oil as an alternative? Oil gurus of OzB

    • +2

Depends on the use case, but heaps of restaurants (including high end ones) often mix canola oil in with olive oil.

    • To fry it's ok. Forget dressing a salad with canola and being happy

      • +1

Canola is absolutely fine in dressings. In fact it's better in certain dressings

        • +1

If you like zero flavour in your salad go for it.

          • @Laziofogna: LOL, dressings contain more than just oil.

Plenty of restaurants, including hatted restaurants, use canola in dressings.

            • @prhino: Of course because of the price. No oil flavour, if you like that no problem. Lol

              • -3

@Laziofogna: Because of the price, and because a neutral oil like canola is better than olive oil in a lot of dressings.

                • -1

@prhino: Be my guest, no worries

                  • -2

@Laziofogna: Thanks, but it's ok, neither I nor hatted chefs were asking your permission to make a superior dressing while saving money.

                    • -1

@prhino: Superior lol. Saving money ok.

                      • @Laziofogna: Based on your username, you probably also think Italians make good coffee :)

    • +1

When cooking Asian food or deep frying, my favourite is peanut oil. Canola for deep frying or frying for that matter can make the food smell a little fishy.

      • +1

Fresh canola isn't too bad for frying, but it doesn't seem to take long for it to start spoiling and really leaving that fish smell

    • +8

Machine oil that was modified for human consumption (Canola is “Canada Low Acid”). Restaurants use it cos it’s cheap, has a high smoke point and imparts almost no flavour. Better off using extra virgin olive oil or butter imho.

    • It depends. Health wise I’ve been told to avoid it

    • +4

Canola oil is suitable to feed your pigs. It is pro inflammatory, increases atherosclerosis, forms carcinogenic by-products when heated. The 'advice' to use canola oil for frying is seriously wrong.

    • Might be late to the game but I recently discovered cold pressed canola oil (as opposed to refined). I haven't been able to find any solid studies on it but am curious as it has less saturated fat then olive oil.

  • +5

I ordered some of this, which works out at about the same price ($17.50/l vs $16.66) and is likely a bit better.

As a bonus, it's packaged in a cask.

I'll report back once I've tried it.

Have ordered one as well. Thanks for posting.

      • Have you tried it yet, and if so what did you think?

    • +3

Look forward to hear your feedback once you try it.

      • +1

It's good. Very fruity. I'll be ordering more.

        • +1

How does it compare to Cobram?

  • +1

I heard it oxidises and better finish it within 30 days from opening. Unless you are running a restaurant, it may not be a good choice

    • Best before date is consumed within 3 months, according to the same company diff farm Red Island bottle I have in front of me.

    • Is this true? I was planning to buy but I thought I could use it slowly for like a year, no way I can finish the whole can in a month lol

    • Oxidation is valid concern, but what is the alternative you are comparing to though? Because vegetable oils are far more prone to oxidation.

To minimise oxidation you should buy local and in a container that protects from light, which this meets.

      • +2

        My 2c…
You can buy smaller bottles like 500ml, 750ml or 1L
Buying bulk to save money is good but if you can't finish it in time, it's a waste of money or bad for health

Close to $50 at my local Aldi for the oil as everyone has noticed so I didn't buy any , but of course I will in the near future.

Regarding price increases, I sent an email to a well known bricks&mortar store who I buy off online after noticing consecutive price increases on a product I purchase every 2 months. The delivery charge is the same but the product has gone up 3 to 4 dollars every two months, it's a local Aus product and I'm like; Why? So I asked them why and I got a reply today from the Customer Service Director:

    Hi

Thanks for your email. It is good feedback regarding our decision to increase the price over a period of time.

Several factors have led to significantly increased cost of producing and distributing food products in Australia and globally. Factors such as escalating energy expenses, global and national freight costs and unpredictable weather conditions resulting crop failures and limited availability, to name a few.

Despite our determined efforts to absorb these increased costs, a point has been reached where maintaining our previous pricing became unsustainable. The price increases for selected products have been carried out over a period of time, rather than one large increase.

Decisions to adjust prices are never taken lightly and we assure you of our commitment to providing you with the best possible prices always as we navigate the current challenges.

Again, thanks for getting for your feedback.

I expected to get a public relations answer and that's exactly what I got. When he says " It is good feedback regarding our decision to increase the price over a period of time."

    He lost me.

Lets talk about the price of Coffee….

  • That's only a 15$ discount. 20 something percent.
Half price would be lovely 😅

    • The 3L Tin hasn't been half price in years (if ever).

      • It was in COVID because I bought 3 tins. From memory it was $15 maybe ,$18

    • You'll be waiting a while for half price on EVOO.

  • +1

This sucks. Down to my last bottle from the last 1/2 price sale at $9 for the 750ml bottles. I was just telling my wife don't worry there will be another sale soon. Damn shed out of luck it seems.

I feel you.. been holding off for ages too, but the 'other' olive oils aren't as good.

  • Seems olive oil prices won't come down this year!

  • I ordered EVOO in pouches from Cobram Estate. Is it safe to consume long term? The price was too good to refuse for the good stuff.

I've reverted to making my own oil for cooking. Good old beef tallow. My butcher gives me the fat. Its delicious and free.

    • I tried doing that and my butcher charged me $25/kg for cuts they just throw out…

    • Tallow is the new sourdough

  • -2

I'm confident that the olive oil price hike is man-made and all shortages and excuses are bullshit. A bit like how covid19 thew in the shipping delay excuse for approximately 18 subsequent years for just about everything on the planet because it was convenient.

    • -1

They also like to use inflation as an excuse. Inflation is 5% so let's jack the prices by 50% and get away with it.

  • Page shows that it's $65.
@RichardL / OP - keen to see how you know it'll be on special on the 3rd July?

  • +1

    Personally I would:
    - Only stock up Cobram 750ml when it's strictly 1/2 price at Colesworth.
    - Temporarily buy Aldi 1L when running out of Cobram and waiting for the next specials.

Tbh I could not be bothered with fiddling with the big cans and funnel for no or just a little of saving. The wasted oil and having to clean up is just not worth it for me.

    • Has Cobram been half price since the price was inflated to $25?

  • How does Australian EVOO compare to Bertolli, Colavita, etc.?

    • +1

Not sure about Colavita but much better than Bertolli.

At least you can guarantee that the Australian EVOO isn't blended.

  • -5

It's fkn unbelievable how many have no fkn idea about olive oil, and still spam with their bs

    • +5

      Explain?

  • What year harvest would this from?

    • I'm assuming it would vary from store to store; but Cobram has it printed on top of the can.

      • +1

The supermarkets turn over enough olive oil to ensure they are the same across the stores.

However olive oil harvested starts in April but I wonder when this year's harvest begin to hit the shelves.

  • +1

Sorry this is a three parter…

I have been regularly buying Aldi’s organic Spanish extra virgin olive oil and have been happy with it but haven’t really concentrated on doing a comparison with other evoos. Anyone have any opinions about this oil about how it compares?

Another issue I read is that in Europe adulteration of olive oils is rife and I guess supermarkets there would need to analyse the oils to make sure it’s legit, I hope Aldi verified theirs.

About buying a bigger quantity like the 3litre and using it slowly - would last us more than a year. The problem is it going rancid so would that be avoidable if you excluded air in your storage bottle, I guess filling it up to the top - anyone had experience with that?

    • If you have the room keep it in the fridge.

All liquid oils oxidise over time, that is why you should buy Australian, it hasn't been on a ship in a container for months before getting to you. Especially since European oil is so expensive now.

    • If you go through 3L a year then perhaps just buy the smaller bottles when you need them.
I easily go through 750ml every 2-3 weeks.

      • That’s a lot of oil for domestic use. What do you use it for?

        • Salads, over different dips, cooking.

  • a late 'Thank You!' for an unrelated topic…

  • How does smaller brands like Goldi compare here?

  • It was $1.33/100ml not that long ago.

These prices rise are out of control.

  • Don't forget to advise new 18 year olds to coat their stomachs with a shot of olive oil so they don't get drunk as fast

    • Eating anything will delay gastric emptying. They won't get drunk as fast and end up passing out when they are out.

    • Oh…
Many years ago, when I went to see the New Year's fireworks, there were several young folks drinking right in front of me. One guy started throwing up just a few minutes before the fireworks started. He was just looking down, and I don't think he could see any fireworks.
If he had taken a shot of olive oil before drinking, maybe he could have watched the fireworks?

  • -1

    Is this a deal?

I reckon there are quite a few 1L extra virgin olive oil priced less than $15/kg on promotion.

    $50 for 3L is insane.

  • skipping this time… funnel makes me nervous

  • 10W-40 is cheaper

  • i bought a different bottle of EVOO from aldi. is it meant to taste like straight gasoline? first time buying oliveoil

    • I haven't tried many. I started with 3 flavours from Cobram and they are light, classic and robust. Also I tried Red Island.
      I prefer Cobram classic.
The worst was Cobram robust. It's too strong it tastes burnt.

  • When will olive oil prices come down?

    • +1

don't question the actions of Big Oil

  • It's funny because the hike in price happened 6 months ago in Spain, so I guess they have been selling their remaining stock at "normal" prices and now that they have ran out are selling at the new price. Price has plateaued now in Spain though.

    • +1

It's not the stock that is old. It takes time for the old supply contracts to expire.

Companies that are large enough to supply supermarkets don't pay market prices to the growers, they negotiate a rate and volume for a set period of time.

This concept is what drives the inflation spiral, when people expect inflation in the future to be high, they include it in their forward looking contracts - creating the inflation they predicted. It would take a glut in the market for prices to trend downwards again - which is very unlikely considering how long it would take for farmers of other crops to switch to olive production.

Hopefully it's only a temporary issue, perhaps related to the extreme heat wave in the Mediterranean last year.
