Can I use the $50 voucher for something else

    • +13

      Yes, it works on this.

      • -2

        WTF

      • +8

Wow that's perfect for my dad. Been looking for something like this. Thank you!

        • +5

The bad battery life is the biggest issue with those Opel Mobile Safety Pendants.

At least if you get one after trading in a 3G phone, it’s essentially free.

          • @toasty: How bad is the battery life? From what I've read it's meant to be about 3 days. I can't see anything draining it other than 4G. If they designed it just for outbound calls, then that would save a whole bunch of power I would think.

      • +1

This would actually be great for the elderly, might see if there's a 3G phone around and give this to my nan

      • can use the $50 on iPhone purchase?

  • +1

Hmm, the specs on this phone read like something from 2000s?

    • +6

It's better than the 3G phone I have from the 2000's. Effectively a free upgrade.

      • But my real phone doesn't even have a SIM card slot on it. My old 3G phone was the backup phone but without a physical SIM it can't really serve that purpose can it?

        • This Nokia has NO slot! It has 2 clips for 2 sim cards.
          And 8GB sd fitted!

      • +5

Not better. My old Nokia has WiFi and could browse Internet from both Sim and Wifi. This one has no Wifi.

physical media buttons on one slide.

          N95 5G Model :)

    • +1

Sounds like all the JB staff who got theirs for free from Gerry are selling it again because it is so useless.

    • +1

You want a phone from the 3000s?

    • +1

      its $49

      • +1

So… I paid $79 for a phone in 2011 which matched these specs. You'd expect some progress in 13 years.

        • $30 less 13 years later is the progress. According to this https://www.rba.gov.au/calculator/, it's less than half the price

          • @killingtime: Just because I paid $79 for my phone doesn't mean there weren't cheaper ones available at the time. In any case a $30 reduction in 13 years is pathetic, just look at TVs where they were 720p 13 years ago and now 4K, for less money.

  • +3

Got free from HN trade in.

Gave it away to elderly relative just to use as phone as 3G network ending.

After years of using Android touch screen smart phones - couldn't go back to this very limiting Nokia system!

Keyboard phone, everything entered by keyboard, tiny (non-touch) screen, no Bluetooth (except to headphones), almost unusable camera, no hotspot…

    • +11

Exactly. It's horrible phone. I am worried even elderly will laugh at me

      • +5

Bought Moto G54 5G for myself @$135 with Perks voucher & discounted gift cards a month back. Happy with it (has eSIM - good for travel) as backup phone.

        Wouldn't pay $0 to use Nokia 110😜

        Didn't show my relative😄
They're only interested & used to make calls on an old keyboard phone. So this phone meant nothing for them to learn.

They were very happy with my thoughtful & generous gift (left the HN $79 sticker on box)😉

      • +6

They will find it difficult to use simply because the screen is not very clear, small and the fonts are small too.

        • +4

And no vibrator motor in phone.

      • I am worried even elderly will laugh at me

        What's driving this…look deeply?

    • Perfect for kids too.

      • +3

Don't even try. My 11 year old was happily using iPhone 4S and she never complained about it. I show her this phone and she exploded. Finally handed over my old Galaxy A71.

        • +5

Of course if your kid is used to a smartphone already, she's not going to want this.

I'm talking about primary school age, first phone type stuff.

      • +3

Prepare to get sued for child abuse when they find out it was free from Gerry and you have chosen to blow their potential inheritance.

      • +6

My kids are happily using this, and an unlocked prepaid ZTE before that.

It's for calling me in an emergency, not for TikToks.

        • I thought ALL kids phones were for calling in an emergency and not ticktok, have my kids played me like a sucker again?

  • +12

Used this for two months. Most limiting for me was the lack of contacts storage and SMS access+typing. I couldn't call anyone and couldn't text properly ( typing on this is literally painful and the memory full issue where I have to delete messages to get new messages was a nail in the coffin). You have to type in each contact again to save it. To save a decade's worth of contacts (around 2000) was impossible. These two were the biggest bummers for me amongst many other disadvantages.

Lots of advantages though, did it's job of digital detox, had more productive hours during the day, hardly used any data. It made me remember phone numbers of close ones like the good old days. Used my brain more to navigate while driving. Although in any big city, not having navigation on your phone is nearly impossible to live with. It's about which way the advantages and disadvantages weigh out for each one.

At the end of the day having this kind of phone as a sole device is not sustainable. Something like the litephone may be doable (that's so expensive though).

    • Why couldn't you call anyone?

      • +1

Without contacts, I couldn't call the person when I needed to eg work contacts. I obviously had family numbers stored. Took like an 30 min to store ten contacts!

    • +3

Pressing the numbers to type messages is something I can't do anymore. Doesn't compute. I used to do it all day every day, but now it's gone from my brain.

      • -1

        Used Nokia's in the 90's.

Just couldn't go back to using the clunky input, tiny screen, limiting options & system.
        We didn't know better then!

Requires relearning. That seems pointless when there are far better options now.

Smart phones are fairly intuitive in their use. This phone isn't!

      • I know, on my 3310 back in the early 00's i could type text messages while driving barely needing to look at the screen, i was at one with the Nokia predictive text. Now i struggle to type anything on it, just like i struggled with my first touch screen. Funny how we adapt.

        • I used to be at one with the iPhone keyboard, could type with my hand behind my back. Now though I make lots of spelling mistakes. Maybe just comes with age.

    • +1

      Used this for two months.

      Give them a medal!

  • +6

It has a great radio without needing the earphones connected.

    • +1

      That's true!

    • True, but listened for about a minute - that was enough!

Rather use a smart phone for option to stream of music & video (which this phone can't do!), than ever listen to most FM radio!

      • +1

Listening to FM radio while driving is fun, sometimes. 😂

        • We have very different ideas of "fun"😜
Gave up after few minutes of using this frustrating phone😝

Cars have had radios for decades. So no need to listen to FM on this phone!
(Mono through speaker, stereo requires use of Bluetooth or supplied earphones.)

Better (& more fun) to have options of what to listen to & use good sound system (in car) - rather than a basic phone radio!

Have options of DAB+ radio, Internet streaming, selecting music & calls via Bluetooth from mobile, etc in my old car.
FM is there, buy never bother with it.

          • @INFIDEL: Gave up after few minutes of using this frustrating phone

            Which parts are frustrating?

            • +1

@CyberMurning: Entering everything only via keyboard,
Tiny screen which means options, contacts, options, images, etc are hard / almost impossible to see to select
Navigation by keys is painfully slow, especially selecting from many options
Needing to learn an archaic system (when screen locked, needed to Google how to unlock - obvious when you know how)

Got free - it wasn't worth the effort!

        • +2

Your car doesn't have FM radio?

I got a new MG the other day and was sad to find no CD player, but no radio would almost be a deal breaker lmao

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: Mechless (no CD player) has been common in car head units for years.

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: I've been looking for CD Player for home and am struggling.
Our 5-year old car doesnt have a CD Player either.
Oh what do I do with my CD Collection.

            • @Pumpkin_rrr: The kiddo has a little Kmart CD/radio player I got for like 10 bucks a couple years back…and since buying the car, also has about 200 more CDs in her little rack lol. Outside of the car there's no real use for them anymore, unfortunately.

If you want quality sound, don't buy a $10 Kmart player though. That being said if you're genuinely looking, much like a VCR, the only place you'll find (ideally) reasonably priced working gear is the right op shop these days.

The irony of me being tempted to plug my Walkman into the AUX port (which the car doesn't actually have, only reason I haven't) is wild when not that long ago (it feels anyway) I was plugging in one of those adapters to plug a portable CD player into the car's tape deck.

              • @TheDukeOfNukem: I own a nearly 20-years old CD Player, brand is Sony and the sound quality is perfect!
Best part is that it's light color, not black!

Unfortunately as the CD part is vertical, it hasnt been playing very well lately.
I am struggling to find a replacement, def not K-Mart or TEAC.
If you come across any good ones, pls let me know.

            • @Pumpkin_rrr: Convert to FLAC, streaming from bluetooth phone….Not sure if Exact Audio Copy is still a thing.

  • omg these are so cool, just wait until the ladies see me handling one of these

    • +2

Good! Will keep away the wrong kind. Maybe I will consider.

  • Cool will go to liverpool jbhf tomorrow

    • +1

Just realised the trade in is via online not in store

  • +1

Technically this is only $1. The trade in voucher can be used without sending and only week cost you $1

    • +1

is this true? will they charge $49 + $1 if i dont send my phone back?

    • Yes but you are literally doing this unethically and might be blacklisted for not sending.

It is better to send rather than not. Even if the sent phone is not 3G

  • +1

    great backup phone

    • +1

Great backup phone if you never have to use it.

  • +2

out of topic but i got this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/190419
just took it out (after 5 years+ never turn on).. and ..
    IT HAS 31% BATTERY..
ffs… try with iphone/samsung nowadays.. flat in a week

    • +4

It lost 69% battery while turned ‘off’? That’s disturbing.

    • I have a few of these. Using them at RTSP Android cameras that integrate into Home Assistant

      • Used free locked 3G Vodafone Android mobiles as security cameras inside house.

        Worked…
Got message & images when in Japan. Someone was in house, saw they picked up mobile, went out front door & turned it off!

Phoned neighbour who called Police 🚔 They quickly investigated - house was locked up… said burglars don't do that!

Was then carer for relative. Care service had key to house. They entered to investigate "intruder" alert sound on mobile. Their shadow through window had set off alert. No one was in house as person cared for was in respite care while I was in Japan.

  • This or iPhone 15 pro max?

    • Show off in a bar with this and you will have the best form of contraception other than wearing a cardigan.
Flash the IP15P and you get swarmed for the pretended extra cloth hanger…

  • What if its a 4G phone, but one that uses 3G, and won't work properly on 4G?

    • Click in and it clearly says they accept both 3g/4g phones.
No need to put down models as long as it turns on.

  • Can this do 2FA? I want to upgrade to a dumb phone but need 2FA.

  • Just wondering if i could trade in my Nokia 2110.

  • +1

the thing i like about the Nokia 110 it has a dual sim and torch and facebook. can the dual sim both be on 4g at the same time or one sim slot needs to be in 2g o3g mode?
can the $50 trade in voucher can be used to buy only certain models? earlier in the month i got the live chat to price match bing ling for the opel lite 4g for $57. the trade in voucher wouldnt work online for for the telstra lite 4g price matched at $39 with woolies but worked for the opel big key phone. not sure if voucher would work instore for any phone instore but the telstra lite 4g is $59 instore. now that ive posted in my old 3g phone a couple of weeks ago hopefully they have lifted any blocks so am i able to use the same ID again to trade in another 3 g phone before june 30th?

  • only $47 at bing lee so one can price match via live chat but not much point as what could one use the remaining $3 on? i think its not redeemable on accessories but only phones?

    • +1

      Actually it's $51 - $50 coupon, $1 gift card.

    • Buy 2 of them.

  • +1

I have one. Decent burner phone.

  • does it require ID to trade in ?

  • Sweet! I can upgrade my old dumb ZTE 3G candybar phone that I got as a backup and never used to a dumb 4g candybar phone that I'll never use for nothing!

    • +5

4g candybar phone that I'll never use for nothing!

Incorrect. You'll use it to get a free 5G phone in the future.

  • cant trade in telstra lite2?

  • I've got an old phone. A ZTE Fit Smart 4G that cost me $49.50 in 2015. And, remarkably after not being used for years, it turns on and accepts charge.

    I could throw it away.

Or the next time I'm passing JB Hifi I could trade it in on a new Nokia 110. And take the unopened box to the local charity shop for them to give way or sell cheap.

    • -1

U can trade in 3G for $50 voucher not 4g

      • +1
