  • this or 9a?

    • +2

      This, better camera

      • heard the battery is pretty average..

        • +1

But we haven't heard anything about the 9a, could be crappier. Google couldn't even launch it on time

        • If you switch to 4g only and don't use 5g on the sim, the battery is improved decently.

    • I have pixel 9 and pixel 8 pro. I prefer the 8 pro by a mile

      • +4

Why do you prefer the 8 Pro over the 9?

      • Why?

    • +2

9a will have the upgraded G4 chip, slightly better battery life and smaller size. The negative side, 9a has 8gb ram as opposed to this having 12gb ram (12gb is overkill for standard day to day usage)

If these were at the same price, I would go for the 9a

      • Agree with this analysis

      • I think we need camera reviews to be able to properly compare.

    • +1

Probably better to wait for Pixel 9 to be around this price since 8 Pro and 9a both have the same crappy Exynos modem 5300 so battery life is usually quite crap and you may experience connectivity issues. Pixel 9 has 5400 which is far more efficient and has relatively few issues.

      • And for anyone who wanders the desert, 5400 modem can do satellite SOS but 5300 can't.

    Cheaper 256gb at Kogan?

  • +4

google store doesnt even sell this one anymore

  • +1

I'm holding out for the Google X. Mind you, I said the same thing before the Google 8.

  • +1

Don't forget to use discounted gift cards to pay for this. $15 off for a $500 purchase at the very least takes the price to $740 after the bonus HN gift card. $730 if you paid the whole thing in gift cards.

  • -1

So that's basically HN refunding GST in gift cards.

    • +4

No it's HN giving you 10% back in gift cards

      • It's definitely a 10% cashback in the form of a HN gift card.

    • Yes it's HN giving you 10% back in gift cards.

    • +1

Maybe it's HN giving you 10% back in gift cards

    • +1

I think it's 10% back in GCs, you could book a trip to Bali and get 1/11th more back

    • +1

No I think that's a 10% cashback in form of a HN gift card.

    • No, a GST refund would be slightly less

  • +4

Or you could just buy it from JB with 10% upfront discounted gift cards and not be stuck in the cashback 10% loophole where you are forced to spend with HN within 30 days.
Of course HN is the only one with black in stock.

    • Where's 10% off gift cards?

      • There are no 10% off gift card deals available.

        • Not at the moment. But you can still get 20x Everyday rewards. I would rather spend my 10% cashback on food than Harvey Norman

Is it normal for a 1.5 year old phone to depreciate 49%?

    • +10

I guess they shouldn't pretend it cost that much to start with.

    • +1

Yes. Phone these are launched with ludicrously inflated RRP, so these can be "discounted" to make you feel like you're getting a great deal!

Look at Samsung, you can grab a flagship phone for almost 50% off RRP within the first month of launch.

Consumers seem to forget how much power their dollar has. We keep buying these, they keep jacking up the prices.

    • Really hurts any resell factor

      • Not sure what electronics holds its value after 1.5 years from launch. Maybe stuff in short demand?

        • Not sure what electronics holds its value after 1.5 years from launch.

iPhones generally do. iPhone 15 is approximately 1.5 year old, and its usual price is still $1250 (launch price was $1500). I prefer Pixel phones, that's why I don't buy the latest model but wait until the previous one depreciates enough.

    • +1

Yes…price is governed by demand & supply.

Demand is created by features, desire to consume, paid/bias-reviews, peers/friends influence etc
Supply: annual releases of MANY brand-models.
Supply ALWAYS exceed demand & hence price-drop: new( wait 6 mths?)…& used.

  • +1

$1699 normal RRP is a bit ambitious..

    • +1

Have a look @ iPhone…maybe slightly-better software & hardware, but the PERCEPTION of value is BIG, imo.

  • +7

I have this phone. Really not happy with it. Camera is great, other wise I find it buggy and suffers from occasional crashes. The back swipe works poorly and its warm after a few minutes of use. In hot weather it gets quite hot.

Was a Samsung person for years and went to this for the price. Big mistake. Next phone will be Samsung.

    • +2

Glad to see someone have the same experience as me! Love the camera (it's great for just taking quick photos without stressing about settings or lighting), but I've found it regularly struggles processing stuff and does occasionally crash. Performance is really poor. Will also be returning to Samsung.

    • A glorified Exynos chipset will do that.

  • I saw this on ABC News: "Trump's tariff war could see cheaper phones, cars, and electronics in Australia." Still not sure how accurate that's going to be.

    • I'll take this with a big lump of salt. It'll more likely go up.

      • But they'll look cheaper when compared to the USD rrp.

  • +2

Everytime i see one on these deals I'm tempted but pixel 7 is still going strong, no desire to replace it.

  • +2

    128gb storage should be illegal

    • why? plenty of storage if you use google cloud

      • +3
        • Photos and videos on device (in addition to cloud backup) means no buffering when trying to locate a specific photo from a few years ago when trying to show to your ADHD friends
        • Paying extra for cloud storage (200gb is $45/year, 2TB is $150/year)
        • 128gb device storage fills up quickly (my 256GB S25U is already 45% full and I haven't even done much)
        • etc…
        • +2

Not to mention that you don't actually get 128GB, you'll actually have about 100GB or less of usable internal memory due to the OS.

    • -3

Yes, the stupidity of choice. Excellent point.

    • Consider a phone with MICRO-sd card, eg downloading movies?

    • +2

Especially since it doesn't take Microsd. I got the 512gb

  • +2

I got the 512gb version of this and it feels like a $400 xiaomi lol

    • -1

Tensor chip is really crappy in performance. I would take mediatek over tensor any day.

      • Depends what you need from a phone. If you are just doing general tasks like web browsing, messaging and taking photos you wont notice much difference between a Tensor, Exynos or Mediatek. But if you use your phone for gaming or heavy photo editing you will. I run a 9 Pro, S25U and S10 Ultra. So ive got all three chipsets!

        • exynos is shit as well. Samsung only fed that shit to low competitive market.

          • +1

@salin: Sorry meant to say Snapdragon not Exynos. No one wants that shit haha

        • nah I literally only use it for browsing/youtube/photos/social media etc no gaming at all or photo editing..

  • This or 256gb galaxy s24 for $750?

    • S24 is a smaller form factor, 8 Pro is larger. This has half the storage but takes better photos. You are going to have to decide yourself what you want and dont want.

  • 9a with 30hr battery or 300hr on extreme saving, wireless charging, and 7yr warranty should enough to cover the needs for average users on a budget price.

    • Edit: *100hr correction

  • Worth noting that the gift card is only valid for one month from the date of issue, as shown on the home page.

    • You can use the gift card to buy another gift card that's valid for 36 months.
