I think this is posted before, but got pull off Ozbargain… not sure why

  • +3

In case anyone is looking for proof - one of the rotating banners on front page => https://images.ctfassets.net/xa93kvziwaye/tJktSa8EmSaB1hVKyD…

    • +6

This 'banner' thingy mentions an 'eGift' card, and it doesn't state that a $50 'coupon' has to be used to buy a mobile phone.

So, can you actually get $50 'JB HiFi credit' (YAY), or do you just get $50 off the price if you buy a new mobile phone from JB HiFi (BOOO)?

      • +6

Trading in for an "upgrade" generally means a new phone so it's likely to be BOOO. JB live chat knows nothing and there are no links anywhere to details about this offer. Showing only a $1 trade in value on the website doesn't help in making the deal appear OK.

  • +3

Why does it say trade-in value = $1
    https://jbhifi.squaretradeup.com.au/product/3g-phone

    • +1

      yeah same

    • +6

i think they buy your phone for $1 and you also get a $50 JB voucher; that's how i read it but could be wrong. Like the JB voucher isn't the "purchase" of your phone, it's an additional reward you are then given after.

  • -3

Gerry was more generous with a free $79 phone
Gerry's staff was too dumb to even turn trade in on. Too dumb to see missing battery, missing charger.
What can I use this possible $50 credit for?

    • +14

      Gerry was more generous

an event so rare we may never see it again

      • Gerry even offered free click and collect parking much closer than the disabled parking spot!

    • Why insist on batteries or more so, chargers, for essentially eWaste that they will need to dispose of. If anything would be deemed “dumb”, it would be mandating chargers that could have otherwise continued to be used be collected only to throw away at a tip.

      • -1

This deal supposed to be a promise for a working re-sellable phone that can still be used with 2 carriers for years to come.
One point for JB, zero for Gerry?

  • If someone does this let us know if its just a $50 JB voucher, or if they deduct $50 off your next phone.

    • +1

Only if you say please! 😜

  • +4

Can I use more than 1 trade voucher to make 1 purchase?

  • +4

Working & non working 3G phones?
Can multipe trades take place. Eg 3 phone's = $150 voucher?

    • +1

Just raid the recycle bin, buy 10 new phones ea $51 dearer than ow beat and you lost $3.

    • Yeah I'd like to know this. I have several old phones sitting around atm

    • I think i read somewhere it has to turn on.

      • I can turn almost anything on.

    • +1

Each code is $50 and only one per phone and only works on phones.

So can't trade 4 phones to get one $200 phone for free.

  • +2

Yeah I only got offer of $1 when I tried nexus 5 working so didn’t proceed. I emailed square and they said -

You will need to refer to the first trade-in email we sent you.
In that email are coupon tiles which you must click to generate your coupon code.
You should receive the coupon immediately after clicking the tile.

Not sure what they meant as I clicked the banner in an email to do this.

  • +4

I did this for the pixel 8a deal. You get a nominal $1 credit but then get an email sent for the bonus. You can choose the $50 towards trade in or any other active promos at time of trade in.

I had an old windows phone kicking around, so the effective $300 I got made it worthwhile.

    • +3

What do you mean by any other active promos?

Could you use the voucher to buy other stuff that isn't a phone?

      • +11

        I pulled the trigger.

$50 can only be used on phones. I tried applying to other things and it wouldn't work

      • If there are other bonus trade in deals, e.g. for pixel or galaxy, then you can redeem the phone towards it.

        • So you are saying the $50 credit can't be stacked with any other promotional offer?

What about giftcards to pay the balance?

          • +2

@drfuzzy: One coupon per phone. Can pay with gift cards which I did.

    • For this promo, you cannot stack vouchers.

  • Punks at local JB know nothing about it. Suggested talking to a Telstra representative.

    • I experienced the same. they pretended to until you start asking specific questions and they redirect online. hopeless.

  • +4

So is it $50 you can use on anything? Or a phone only

  • +3

So I can buy a $20 3G phone from AliExpress and turn it into $50 voucher

  • +1

Tested checkout page asking for DL or Passport + CC details too? Aren't we just get a $50 voucher via email?

  • -5

I would never trade in a mobile anywhere - it's too easy to recover personal information from the phone, even after it's been "wiped".

    • +1

Actually it's really not. Especially if the operating system is encrypted by default.

      • -5

Still wouldn't risk it for just $50.

      • Most of old phones in 3G era didn't have encryption enabled by default.
Android introduced encryption around version 5, and default encryption only since version 10.

        • Even after a factory reset it's still tough if it has been used afterwards. If the NAND has TRIM it will be even tougher

    • +2

This is why I have a whole fake identity with AI photos and everything to load onto the phone after I wipe it.

      • +1

        lol

    • ok good to know, so basically you are getting $49 credit for this deal.

      • Yep that's one way to look at it

        • This only good if u looking discount on a cheap phone? Otherwise not really worth it, got only till end of month?

          • +2

@HangryCakeStore: yeah i got sucked in.. now i'm trying to find a phone to buy for the sake of using the coupon.

            • @edrift: Do you have to buy a phone though? Does the coupon successfully apply to a non phone item?

      • +3

        No that's incorrect.

The value of the e-gift card is $1 which you are already charged for.

You keep the coupon for free

    • Thx did the same but are you sure you don’t need to send phone in?

      • +2

Yeah if you don't care about losing the $1 credit.
I forgot to use my $1 gift card too

        • Will you be blacklisted from future trades? I remember reading people not sending phones back in previous deals.

          • @designate: I think you would be I wouldn’t bother if that’s the case

    • What if you got a 3G phone not under any of those brands?I don’t think you can trade in at all

You would have to make up your got that model and brand which is a pie and falsely claim when you don’t have it

      • +1

If you’re referring to the yellow bordered box below the order details (after you select 3G/4G smartphone), I misread that too initially. That search list is if you want to trade in another device, you don’t need to find the 3G phone you want to trade in.

        • Right so you can just choose a 3G phone and check out. No need to search or add a device

Thanks. What if you do send a phone in and the battery is flat? Have a old iPhone 4 lying around it wouldn’t hold charge longer enough it still does turn on

    • Ok however when you are not sending any phone in. You might be blacklisted for future trade ins or perhaps impact your credit rating?

  • -3

Illuminati are always trying to get me to trade my safe 3G phone for a COVID infested 4G variant.

    No… Thank… You….

  • +2

$50 trade in coupon valid for mobile phones only.
    I bought the Nokia G11 Plus 4G 64GB for $129.

    • it got some pretty bad reviews…

i'm hunting for sub $200 phones too and whilst this is cheap, it's probably not the best that JB have to offer for under $200 before $50 discount

  • 3G shutdown pushed out to end August?

    • +2

      Telstra's - Yes
Optus was/is already planned for September.

  • +1

Using an import Xiaomi phone which I've had for 6 years which doesn't even support B28 which might be rendered useless as I can't get voLTE working with Telstra or Optus. Even a new Xiaomi with B28 isn't working.

Will get a burner Optus Sim (currently on Telstra network) and if that works will port over. I really like my phone. Changed the battery this year which brought it back to life.

Not sure I'll sell this phone for $50 but I have some absolutely rubbish ones that I could use.

    • +3

Hi, this might be of help to you.
Yes, import Xiaomi phones do not have B28 and Telstra clearly mentions you need B28 for VoLTE to work on their network. I am impacted by this, whilst using Boost.

However, I have ported to Lebara (uses Vodafone), and Amaysim (uses Optus) and I can confirm I get VoLTE on both networks.

You may need to force-turn-ON VoLTE by dialing *#*#86583#*#* and then restart the phone once. Let me know if it works on any Vodafone/Optus MVNO.

      • +1

Voda is a bit patchy outside of main cities. The Optus network is about as good as the Telstra wholesale network (for which I'm apart of with my current SIM).

My preference is Optus for coverage.

I'm aware of the overrides for VoLTE/VoWIFI and even familiar with the user-agent handshake and MBN file. I have the Telstra Commercial MBN file for the modem and still I can't get an IMS registration. People on the XDA forums have been trying for some time and it appears Xiaomi and Telstra is very hit and miss, some phones get registered, others can't. And even the ones that get on have periods of no IMS registration.

It's probably something in the modem as a modem config file isn't enough. Not about to pour any more hours into making my old phone work with Telstra, will try Optus and if not will get a new headset.

        • +1

          Follow-up for whoever.

Got a amaysim SIM and stuck $10 on it. Plugged in the SIM and VoLTE is active, IMS Registered. No VoWiFi, but that could be something else.

I'm able to make calls on both my Xiaomi phones (one a Global (Andriod 13), one a CN (Andriod 9)) with VoLTE/HD. Also put the modem in LTE Only Mode and can still make calls. Even during a call the phone stays on LTE.

VoWiFi is a fight for another day, but at least all our households Xiaomi phones work on 4G with VoLTE working. Looks like I'm moving to amaysim.

Tried three times to complete ID, finally worked, just for the card hold to fail at the end. And now I can’t get back into the order. Anyone else having insane issues with JB Squaretrade portal?

  • does this work on multiple 3G phones? or just one per account?

    • +1

lol bro about to find 40 phones to trade in for a top of the line flagship

  • Does anyone know if we can use multiple coupons on 1 mobile purchase?

    • +2

No, only one coupon code at a time.

    • One at a time as it auto applies to an eligible phone

  • Will $50 voucher work on Nokia 110? I just need a spare non smart phone, will effectively be $30.

    • +1

      No it doesn't. I tried

      • Thanks for testing and replying, appreciate it.

    • +2
  • +1

    I only received a $1 gift card!
When will I receive the $50 gift card?

    • Only a$1 gift card.$50 voucher.

      Both instantly issued

  • +1

I know we’ve established that it can only be used towards phones but in case the system doesn’t distinguish has anyone tried using it toward an iPad or tablet? Whether cellular or just wifi?

  • Is it only 3g phones or will they take old 4g pbones as well?

  • Gaaaa I didn't know I can't just drop it in the post box but take it to the auspost office.

  • Anyone know if there is a minimum spend on this?

  • This worked for me- but ugh - painful process, didn't like my ID for some reason had to use wife's - poorly explained process which would confuse a lot of folks.

Thanks to OP for posting though!

  • +2

Thanks OP. Picked up a Motorola G54 for $149.

  • +2

I redeemed the $1 gift card received for the trade-in and with the $50 voucher, this brought the price of the G54 down to $148, beating the earlier perks deal.

  • +1

Can you trade in 2 phones to get $100 vouchers and use it on a single phone?

    • +1

      The $50 voucher T&Cs say:

Cannot be used in conjunction with any other coupon.

Also comments above suggest you can't.

  • Good deal imo.

  • website shows $1, how do I get $50?

    • +1

They send you a bonus coupon instantly

  • Anyone know if they would accept a GSM phone? Or would even know the difference between GSM/2G and 3G?

Ive got an old 8310 and 6230i lying around.
