There's information saying that Xpeng G6 will cost around 60k before on road costs (which will be around 15k more expensive than its price in China, which is comparable to Zeekr). But based on the current market, even 60k is too expensive, with more brands coming to Au we can wait to see a price diving show, which is already happening to some of the brands such as BMW (you can easily get 18% off, which is quite standard at the moment). BYD is currently priced unreasonably high in Australia, and they are simply not making a lot of sales due to this pricing strategy.

        • +4

But none of the cars you mentioned are Seal competitors. My point is, the vehicles you’re naming are a class above BYD in terms of quality, specs and features and with it comes premium pricing, especially in our market.

The Atto 3 is the one vehicle that is overpriced so we might see a drop on price when others land.

          • +3

@ElectrkJonesy777: You don't get my point. I'm saying that when those more premium cars are priced similar to the current price of the Seal, the Seal can do nothing but to lower the price. BYD's uncompetitive pricing is because of their pricing decision was made by the Australian Car Dealer Eagers Automotive, but not BYD. If you look at GWM, which is also a Chinese car maker, their pricing is more reasonable (e.g. tank 300 and 500 are only 7k-10k more expensive than the price in China). The difference in pricing between BYD and GWM is mainly contributed by the difference between their contracts with Australia Dealers.

            • -2

@richardaadc: And my point was, none of the vehicles you mentioned are Seal competitors. The Seal is actually very well priced in Australia compared to other markets, the UK for example.

The cars you’ve mentioned are MPV’s and SUV’s, not sedans.

              • +3

@ElectrkJonesy777: But Australians prefer SUV over sedan, which is proven by the market. So Xpeng G6 is a direct competitor to Seal when it is priced around 60k. It is like if BMW X3 and 3 series sedan are priced at the same price, the 3 series sedan will stop selling.

      • It's still a price pressure, even if other EVs are more premium / more expensive

      • I was a passenger in a Nio, nothing premium about it except the price.

    • +3

I personally am interested in the EV5 from Kia, I like what they have done with their recent refresh in for the MY23 models.

      • +1

Yeah but that won't be cheap either

        • Apparently it is about $29-$33k USD for the highend GT model so I am hoping it won't be more $65k once the Australian tax is applied.

      • +1

That's what I'm eying too. Seats fold flat so might be good for car camping and LFP for the long range battery too.

  • +4

I saw one of these today it isnt a bad looking car im not 'anti-chinese' cars but they need to change the BYD logo every time i look at it i think BYO or it looks like someone had their car badge and they just put anything on

otherwise the design is nice - wonder if the drive feels any different to other EVs or do all EVs kind of 'feel the same' - im not an expert still trashing my 10 year old ICE Car (Honda Civic) and will continue to do so till it dies

    • +14

At least it's better than the old BYDs that had the full "build your dreams" sprawled across the back of them…

At least with just BYD on them now owners can pretend it doesn't stand for such a stupid brand name.

      • +2

i think thr SVU / Wagon of this does have 'Build Your Dreams' on the back someone i know at work has one

it isnt a bad slogan just a terrible brand name - anyway looks like a nice car good on those who can afford to drop 60k or on a car i certainly can't

        • I thought they'd gone away from the full "build your dreams" branding on the new cars… But I'm not across everything BYD.

It's a good slogan for maybe an investment management company or something… A depreciating asset company, don't know so much…

        • Actual chinese pronouciation sounds like 'Be Ya D'

      • Relax it's just a car. Gets you from a to b. Looks ok. Great value and is a decent price. Who gives a damn about a thickle name sprawled across the back? If you gave me the same car with looser on the back for 10k less I'll take it and spend 200 bucks to cover it up. Job done

        • There’s a joke there , butt I won’t touch it ..

  • Can someone explain the main difference between the premium and performance, is it just acceleration and suspension?

    • Correct.

I assumed you would have known it was AWD if you knew it had a different suspension?

    • +2

Performance is AWD dual motor, the other two are RWD. Premium has slightly more range as Performance is a lot more powerful. If you are a regular drive Premium is perfectly fine and still super fast.

      • Awesome, thanks for the detailed response. I would say I’m just a regular driver so the premium should suit me fine. Cheers

      • 130kg heavier with the extra motors

    • Plus AWD and less range

  • +12

Double whammy for EV sales at the moment, most early adopters who want an EV and nothing else have already bought one, the rest of the market is still a bit weary of getting one… On top of this everyone is broke at the moment due to huge rent and mortgage increases.

    • +19

Everyone is broke and yet still 60-100k utes fly out the door. Surely gotta be alot of finance repos coming, so many Wildtraks and Raptors picking their kids up from school at 3pm in a suburb where the car is worth a 20% house deposit lol

      • +5

Yeah because that have massive tax write offs for tradies

        • *had

          • @dec1an: Still has. They changed the rules but you can still do it if it’s for “work” usage only

        • +1

          And FBT exemptions for EVs.

      • +2

Lol yeah I know what you mean, but also, our tax system is setup to incentivise small business to buy utes, no FBT.

        • +1

And EVs - Teslas were not really as common till the FBT policy was released

    • +1

On top of this everyone is broke at the moment due to huge rent and mortgage increases.

Yep add in just general cost of living, im still on the 7/11 job but i know people who are dropping $7 or so bucks on a coffee

      • -3

You know people? They tell you about the $7 coffees they buy? That is a regular conversation?

        • +1

im not sure if you're being 'sarcastic' but…. yes, yes and not daily but it has come up

  • +1

I am still waiting for the 5K wuling.

    • +1

BYD Seagull or something in that segment would be nice to have. Wuling Mini is too small and light, probably not gonna pass safety standard.

  • +2

haha only dropped about $1900? EV direct has literally just bought/leased dozens of premium location car yards across the country for their BYD service centres. How could they afford? Because they earn a premium of $10k+ each BYD they sell.

Now Tesla has dropped $5000. Looks like someone’s in a risk of capital chain rupture.

    • Pretty easy for them to scale quickly considering Eagers involvement

  • Dog goes woof. Cat goes meow. Bird goes tweet. Gasoline car goes VROOOOM!

    • +13

      Electric car goes

      • +2

I wish they go.. bit faster. Most EV drivers drive like a sunday drivers, 10k below the speed limits.

        • My personal faves are the ones that drive 10k below the speed limit in a 100 zone then drive 10k over the limit in an 80 zone…

    • +2

But what does the fox say?

    • Petrol station goes

  • +1

AWesome car, but bigger price drops coming for sure.

    • Pretty sure there's still wait time for byd. I feel like Tesla didn't take the competition serious enough and oversupplied.

      • -3

Tesla only builds and ships cars here for orders. Only cancelled orders are available as stock and they go quickly

        • +2

That’s a negative. I got off the phone a couple weeks ago with a Tesla sales rep who confirmed they have plenty of cars in stock ready for 1-2 weeks delivery in almost all colours. Anyone waiting a long time either has a custom order (if that’s even possible) or being played by Tesla to artificially inflate expectations.

          • @ozeebee: Maybe they aren’t selling as quick as they were but they are still cancelled orders. Tesla does not just ship mass volumes of cars here hoping to sell them. That’s not how they operate here.
That is actually how BYD do operate though and that is why there are thousands of BYDs in holding yards around the country.

            • @choofa: Very unlikely cancelled orders. They had it available in all colours in different specs. They have cars sitting unsold. Salesguy sounded a little desperate for a sale.

    • +1

They just had their biggest month of sales and a revised version is still well over 6mths away so I can’t see that happening.

    • If Australia chooses to follow US and EU increasing the tax, that will be another story.

      • +5

Well lucky the libs abolished subsidies to car manufacturing ages ago so we can all reap the benefits of cheaper products overseas without the need to stick tariffs on products to keep local jobs where its uncompetitive.

      • +1

Why would they? We no longer have a local auto industry to protect.

  • +7

Bought the dynamic. Great car. Very smooth and quiet. Electric isn't for anyone. We charge at home and use the diesel 4x4 for big trips and towing.
I was never going to buy one, but did the maths and it didn't cost much more on a novated lease. Sold the old car and put the money in offset.

    • +1

2 Car family as well, 4x4 Diesel Everest for the towing duties and the Seal Performance for around town. Novated Lease as well.

Finally got around to putting the foot all the way down this week after a decent run in period and….damn..that is quick. I have had decent performance cars a large part of my life but the Seal just goes. First electric car and love it.

      • hi, Im considering NL, do u mind disclose ur deal details, amount of repayment and period of lease?

        • Hey @154404965 - Its very dependant on leasing provider TBH the "deal" you get. Under the novated lease provider there is the financier that sets the interest under the "loan" with the lease. There is already an abundance of online EV lease calculators that can help.

      • How does it drive? When ignoring straight line performance, which an EV always wins against ICE.

        • @ozeebee - Better than the 2008 GT Liberty I replaced it with IHMO. Very similar weighted cars due to AWD/Luxury in the GT. I would say the very similar weighted Performance Seal handles better BUT is really being let down by the tyres that have come with the car.

I think once the factory tyres are used up, a nice set of Contential/Michelins will make the handling much better.

          • +1

@danielpenna: Agree. It's such a smooth ride. With no engine noise it's very quiet. Interior is very refined and has no issues. 10,000km and it's been a great change. Love my 4x4, but for trips around town I drive the dynamic.

    • hi, Im considering NL, do u mind disclose ur deal details, amount of repayment and period of lease?

    • +2

Almost exactly what I did. But got the performance. Already have a ute as a 2nd car for big trips and caravan. Wife wanted to downsize main car so sold the X5 and proceeds went to offset.

Car is amazing. So fun, fast like nothing I've experienced. Reckon it looks the bomb too. Quality is great. A good driving experience compared to say the Tesla Model 3 as it has a HUD, indicator stalks, instrument cluster, 3D camera view, rear front and rear sensors (not just relying on cameras) etc. Highly recommended.

  • +12

I'm actually happy this is happening to car manufacturers since they took advantage of covid to maximise profits.

Now they are getting hit hard with low sales and more competition

    • +1

I'm actually happy this is happening to car manufacturers since they took advantage of covid to maximise profits.
Now they are getting hit hard with low sales and more competition

i wouldnt even say the sales are 'that low' it has mostly gone back to normal

the government also reduced the instant assest tax write of so tradies and other small businesses can't just write of Hulixes for fun to sell them 12mo later

as for competition of course the Chinese car makers are doing exactly what the Koreans did 15-20 years ago, under cutting the market and marketing like crazy

      • +1

Probably lower sales then they expected but you get the drift.

    • +5

Yup, they used supply constraint as an excuse. And with Toyota they drip feed so they can maximise profit until they can no longer use it as an excuse because it's way past the use by date.

The majority of those fires are in hybrid vehicles, not BEV’s.

    • +5

Lol. Petrol cars and hybrids are way more likely to catch fire.

  • Saw one in the flesh. Fantastic looking car but current lifestyle doesn’t fit for a Seal sedan. If they could make the boot like the model s and longer then maybe I could consider one.

  • Negotiable or fixed? Tesla or BYD?

  • +7

Good car, but price can go lower.

Chinese cars (or any new car manufacturer) are certainly very welcome to spin up the oz market competition. I'm fed up with toyota rav 4 hybrid for low spec high price and ridiculous wait time.

    • +9

      Toyota's with their 2000's interiors in 2024 models. It's beyond a joke.

    • Tbh Toyota’s are a joke.

      • yet a lot of oz chose it.

I'm totally baffled why the reputation of reliability worth so much of our hard earned money and valuable time.

  • +1

Needs to be a lot lower then this

  • +2

Biggest problem for EV's is that young families are doing it tough. Boomers have the cash, but are set in their ways. A lot of misinformation going around.

  • +3

    Wait for the Xiaomi SU7

    • +2

You’ll be waiting a hell of a long time. If it ever arrives, it’s not before 2026.

  • Waiting for $29999 drive away

    • +2

      Wait another couple of months

    • Only if petrol cars drop to 20k or new tech in battery.

    • 30k is the new 20k for ICE cars…..

      • +2

ICE cars are getting way more expensive. Look at very average Toyotas now hybrid only $50k-$60k cars that aren’t that great. You’re paying premium for a reputation servicing costs, petrol and in 5 years they will be less desirable. You are being sold down the road on propaganda of ev lies

        • You are being sold down the road on propaganda of ev lies

please bro new battery tech is just around the corner bro full self driving coming in 5 years i swear

  • No Afterpay?

  • Get the black colour, it looked great in videos

    • Everything looks great with Photoshop and / or AI

  • +4

Goodness me barely a price drop for an overpriced EV that are sold far cheaper in china.
    People gone hysterical..

Drop to 40 then we talk.

    • -1

      You sound hysterical

  • +1

Nice car but they look a bit underwhelming in the metal.

    • Like Toyota plastic cars? Come on the whole industry is making cheap cars at premium prices.
