    I will also update:
    - Bloody pain to do this morning as Telstra backend was down
    - Eventually plan sorted with no issues
    - $1000 is simply a JB Hifi gift card, but I'm not sure if they would give it to you if you weren't buying an iPad at the same time
    - Bought 13" M4 and accessories. Definitely not the most cost efficient way to use the deal but overall better for me for tax reasons
    - Got home, cancelled over phone. $499.98 cancellation charge that I will apparently receive an invoice for and pay however I want, or it will default to the card that I used to register with Telstra

Note that the mobile broadband data shares with an existing JB Mobile account if you have one, so you could run through the data before you cancel if you want
Also I have no idea what Telstra will charge for the 4h used of this month but we shall see

So can confirm spoke at length with a JB rep and signed up. I ended up going a bit higher for the iPad air 13 inch M2 as he was going to do the 11 inch for $910 but I would have to surrender remaining $90. He got it down to $1199 from I think $1399. As soon as I left the store I called up and cancelled the data plan and confirmed I need to pay back $499.92 so got the 13 inch M2 for $700.

    • How’s the 13 inch air? I’m considering upgrading from 11 inch to use it for sheet music etc also. Weight wise is it okay?

      • +1

It's actually really light. It is very big I feel though but probably suitable for what you are using it for.

    • Is it basically just a gift card, ie for could you have added something completely different in the same transaction to make up the remaining $90?

      • They gave me the gift card with the rest on it

    • So the rep discounted the iPad in this case? $1199 instead of $1399?

    • Is it the 128gb model?

    • Surprised you got any discounts, they told me that the absolutely had no room to reduce the prices by more than a few dollars on iPads. Ended up paying $985 for the iPad air.

This (signing up and immediately cancelling for the bargain) feels wrong/unethical.

    • It's okay, Telstra just laid off a bunch of people and is profitable.

    • +10

      Then dont do it

    • Sure but I wouldn't exactly state the corporation in question is exactly ethical with their pricing and some of their warranties they sell.

  • I'm still using the M1 iPad Pro from JB hifi deal, $69 p.m for 2 year and got iPad Pro for free.

    • Is it the iPad Pro 11 M1?

    • +1

Same. I got iPad Pro 11 (M1) for free. It was old plan. It had ETC. So, if I wan tto cancel, I need to pay ETC + Voucher Repayment fee.
Telstra confirmed they no longer has ETC for JB Upfront plan. $69 JB MBB plan with 300GB.

      • yes, 3 more months till cancel

      • How did you get it for free?

  • I've never looked at wireless broadband before. If you wanted to keep the wireless broadband plan would it be possible to use it as home internet (to replace nbn)?

Guess what I'm asking is there a device that would take the Telstra sim card and work as a home modem with ethernet ports for other devices?

    • I haven't tried however from what I read you can.
The Sim looks exactly the same as a mobile Sim so I would imagine it functions the same.

    • Yes you can - I know a bunch of people who do it.
ie. Tp link makes 4g/5g routers with sim slots you can use

      • Ok great I'll look into that. So it can be any 4g/5g router that would work with this? or does it need to be a Telstra specific product?

I run a TP-Link Deco mesh so would be good if it could work directly with that (or plug into it the same way my current nbn does).

        • Yep! Any router that supports the normal Aus Telstra bands (which any locally sold router should)

  • Does this affect credit rating at all if we terminate early?

    • Why should it?

    • No

    • It doesn't - when you do the initial credit check, it runs a soft enquiry and doesn't stay on your record.

  • They need a mobile number to cancel the plan. I didn't consider that a data plan would have a mobile number attached, but I guess it still would.

Where can I see the number? I can't find it in any of the papers.

Edit: managed to create a login for jbhifi mobile, which has my number

Edit: $479 fee to cancel + first month ($69) I assume. I guess we'll see what's charged exactly.

Edit: I was told an invoice for the fee would be emailed but all I've got so far is a "sad to see you go, no further actions needed" email. Did you guys get an invoice or is it just taken from the card on record?

    • Mine was in my order confirmation email from JB

      • Good to know. I couldn't find it.

How did you pay the cancellation fee? It's been hours now and I haven't gotten any invoice yet.

        • Sounds like they send you an invoice down the track

        • +1

I cancelled mine last night and still have not received the invoice either, they did till me it might take a bit to send through and I'll have 10 days to pay it once received.

  • +2

    Thanks Op!

Got the iPad Pro and they also price matched to Apple education. Happy days :)

    • I didn't know they did that! Did you just have to show that you could log in or something, or did you need to show an active student card? In other words, if I still have my student email but I've graduated a long time ago and are not currently studying, would you still be able to price match?

      • +1

I had my student card ready though they didn’t ask for any proof at all! So I guess it depends on your luck.

On their website, it said they’d ask for student card.
        https://support.jbhifi.com.au/hc/en-au/articles/360054088113…

        • +1

They price matched for me too but I’m a teacher so it was part of the credit check.

    • Did you need to be logged into the education portal? I'm no longer a student.

Just walked through the whole process and this is legit. The JB staff were super helpful and impressed with gaming the system. For added value anyone travelling overseas in 60 days don’t forget TRS 10% claim back

    • I didn't receive any invoice for the iPad, just the $69 plan invoice. Did they send you the invoice?

    • IF you are travelling overseas. Wouldn't you be able to claim to full cost of the iPad. So you get even more value from that.

  • Is it possible to pay for this using Afterpay or Zip Pay? or is it credit card sign up only?

And if cancelling straight away, does Telstra ask for the reasons of cancelation?

    • You could link your Zip card to the Telstra direct debit I guess

      • Ok but what do JB Hi-Fi ask for in-store as payment when you go in to get the deal?

        • +4

They ask for credit card details for the pre-paid cost $69 / month.

For anything in excess of the $1,000 gift voucher, it's then just a normal JB Hi-Fi transaction.

          • @deeeno: Thanks, that was what I was wondering, if that upfront fee could be on zip / afterpay.

    • I used credit card

  • +1

Thank you OP, it sounded too good to be true but in this case everything worked out as you described.

End result iPad Air M2 13" for ~$550, even got a case and a USB-C to 3.5mm adaptor thrown in.

    • how did you manage to get 13" ipad air at ~$550?

      • Whoops, that's my bad, it was 11", will edit - 13" was available for an extra $200.

Edit - can't edit, hopefully someone reads the comments fully

        • Would it not be $500 plus $69?

          • @BinnyC: Nah the actual cancellation cost was $480, sounds like the first month was already counted. So more like $480 + $69.

    • what is the price of your ipad?

    • Nice I got the same model, I should have asked about the case but was happy with the deal regardless, have bought a Stand, USB dock and case off Amazon for less than $50 though, the cheapest case in JB that I saw was $50.

      • Yeah cases were overpriced but a $70 case came down to $40 still probably more than what you could get on Amazon… I will hand in my ozbargain license

    • How did you get that price? Please care to share

    • +1

You’re most welcome mate, glad the cancellation trick still works :)

    • What kind of case did you get?

  • When does this end?

    • +1

Ends on 5th June as per in-store poster

      • I asked in store and they said they can pull deals early OR change the T&C's

  • +3

    I forgot to mention
When I cancelled last year, I received Telstra points so a win-win for this deal too :)

  • +1

Just went tonight and opted for a purple Wifi 256gb iPad Air 6. Takes a little while to process everything. They matched the education price so paid $1089. I paid outstanding amount via gift cards no problems. Chatting now to Telstra to process cancellation and they are quoting $479.09. The $69 comes out of the credit card you’ll use for direct debit (if you were to keep the plan).
Total cost $479+69+89=$637 instead of $1089 saving of $452

    • +2

For a second I thought I posted this comment as half hour ago I just bought the exactly same (same purple colour, same 256gb and same education price match)
Took 40 mins to do everything. The staff super friendly and asked me to spread the promotion so more people can game the sale before taken off. LMAO
Still feel too good to be true.

    • I just assumed you needed to pick a Wifi+Cellular model….. face palms, lesson learnt :)

      • Any iPad. I did ask if I could buy an iPhone but the guy said no.

  • Add me to the list of green ticks. Picked up an M4 iPad Pro tonight and the $1000 off is still active. Basically given to you as a gift card that is then immediately applied to your iPad purchase. Also able to price match Costco though they do take off the membership fee so it's not much. The sales guy was really cool and helpful throughout the process, knew his stuff and had no issues with the strategy.

Was too lazy to call and it is after hours so I went through the JB Mobile App Chat to cancel the plan and it was done within 5 minutes.

Very pleased with a $500 discount to an iPad :)

    • What store was this bro?

  • My wife picked up an iPad 10th generation for the kids. Normally $587. After cancellation fees and first month etc, it will end up costing $548 for the iPad + a $413 gift card. Not a bad deal!

    • +5

So you banked $413 gift card? Excellent

    • Hi, so they sign you up for the plan, then say charge $587 on $1000 gift card and give you remaining $413 ?

And then when you cancel, u pay $69 to Telstra?

So, would it not be $587 plus $69 you paid?

  • +7

Went to JB and was given $1000 gc and didn’t use it to buy an ipad. So if I cancel the plan now, it’s like I paid $569 for a 1k jb gc. Thanks OP 👌🏾

    • What store was this bro?

      • Luckier than all of us then. I wanted to get an iPhone but they said no. Still happy with iPad though.

    • Could you please pm the store name? Ta

  • Can someone school me on iPads?
I want an “M” series processor, at least 10”, doesn’t need to be thin as it’ll be hardcased, at least 128gb.
I’m seeing too many options and overwhelmed. I can also match education price if need be.

    • New 2024 iPad Air with M2, or 2024 iPad Pro with M4

    • I'd recommend the new M2 Air model as the older M1 Air (5th Gen) never had a 128GB version. And the standard iPad never had a M version at all, the current chip in that (10th Gen) is the A14 which is getting old now.

M2 Air 11" 128GB (Wifi only) is $997 (seems like some are doing it for $910 if you ask)

      M1 Air 10.9" 64GB (Wifi only) is $899
      M1 Air 10.9" 256GB (Wifi only) is $1090

      • iPad Air m2 is amazing and a lot of iPad for just under $1000

      • When they do it for $910, do they give rest $90 in gift card?

        • Yes. I unfortunately wasn't able to get the $910 deal but they did give me the gift card with the remainder $3 on it :D

  • Do they only accept port in or I can create a new service to Telstra?

    • Why would you want to port in? The associated phone number means nothing

      • Yeah definitely no port in, don't know how many TCN gift card I can use instore

        • +1

I think you can use unlimited.

          • @Fasian: They told me that I need to use 1000 GC first, pay the rest with TCN still.

  • +5

Got a great deal today. Thanks to @BargainsGrabber and others for helping sort through confusion.

iPad Air M2 (11 inch, 256GB, WiFi only) + latest Apple Pencil Pro

Talked rep down from $1177 to $1099, I think because I said it'd mean I could afford the pencil.

Paid $318 after the voucher, cancelled before any charge, now have two weeks to pay invoice of $479.

That's $797 all up, instead of $1336 (over 40% off).

    • +1

All good mate, glad I can help :)

  • Do they force you to spend the $1000 GC on the spot? Or can you “think about it” and take it away?

    • Depends on store but most of them will need to get you an iPad. I was still happy to upgrade as you are getting m2 11 nearly half price. Someone bought a base iPad and cashed over $400 and just one reported they walked away with the voucher.

  • Is this deal ending on 5 June or later?

    • +3

The deal says 5th June but JB might call it off earlier once they figure out people are gaming the system lol
