Just to clear things up, I work at TGG as an manager and worked at JB.

The etcs for any 24 month sim only plan is whatever the base value of the original giftcard offer is, meaning promos like this the etc's don't change.

    $69 SIM - $450 $99 SIM - $800

    Mobile Broadband (this one) - $69 - $500

First month gets deducted straight away, have seen people request it back and be successful when paying etc's. Any other information provided is wrongs

Source - I work there currently and process these daily :)

    • +2

Thanks for confirming, I’ve saved your comment for future reference when future deals like these get QA’ed

      • +2

anytime, happy to clear any questions up if I can!

        • ECT is Early Termination Charge/Cost?

Can you confirm that this charge and the so-called "voucher repayment fee" are the same thing?

That may be the source of some confusion. It sounds like they're two different things, but it also sounds like you're saying only one penalty applies for early termination in this case.

          • +4

@dullbeard: Hey mate, yeah I think that's what the confusion is.

So there is ONE TOTAL CANCELLATION COST which is the "voucher repayment".

As said above it's whatever the base giftcard offer is as listed above.

You don't need to pay out $69 x 24 etc etc, whatever plan you choose the exit fees i've listed above is all it will ever be.

            $69 Mobile - $450
            $69 Mobile Broadband - $500
            $99 Mobile - $800

            • whatever first month cost is.
            • @anonpapa: aha! This seems definitive, thank you very much.

            • @anonpapa: Hey thanks for your comments so far.
I saw there’s a one-day only wicked Wednesday only deal for $99/24 months (mobile plan), $1200 GC.
Under this post, I assume you can cancel immediately, repay $800 for $400 GC profit (+/- $99 first month fee)?

Anything stopping you from going in the next day and rinsing and repeating with the iPad promotion for $500 GC profit f(+/- $69 first month fee)?

              • +1

@ts13: Offer is extended for the $1200 GC

                • @AirJordan23: Good to know. Physical posters in-store said today only, and I had to leave. Then there’s no rush :’)

                  • +2

@ts13: Extended until tomorrow thats what the staff told me. $700 GC on $69 plan starts tomorrow as well

                • @AirJordan23: @ts13 you beauty - I just got this deal today too. Thanks guys!

                  • +1

@itsfree: No worries mate. Happy to help fellow OZbargainers

                  • +1

@itsfree: No worries. I also churned the mobile and mobile data plans and claimed $1200 and $1000 gift cards respectively. Then cancelled and resisted have sent me invoices of $766 and $479 respectively. The discrepancies in payments are super rogue.
I’ve asked if they can pro-rata refund the first month fees, but the payment is still pending so I’ll have to ask again later.

thanks a lot to the rep for their comments and advice!

              • +1

@ts13: unless your credit rating sucks you'll have no issue, keep in mind I'd just do both at once may aswell, doesn't make a difference as long as you get approved

                • +1

@anonpapa: the mobile $99 plan currently offers gift cards @$1200. So if I was to get that plan and cancel straight away what do I need to repay? Thinking of getting a new iPhone 15 pro max.

Edit I saw that: $800 repayment. So basically you pay $99+800 to get $1200 gift cards. It’s like getting gift cards at 25% off

                  • +1

@fozzie: Yeah I guess you could look at it like that :)

                    • @anonpapa: Thanks. When getting the iPad do you get a tax receipt? Just wondering for tax return purposes.

                      • @fozzie: You get a receipt? Unsure if it's a tax receipt or not.

                        • @anonpapa: Ok. Might ask when I go. Cheers

                          • @fozzie: Were you able to confirm if a tax receipt was provided for the iPad?

                            • +1

@pixxelpusher: Just got a normal receipt but i imagine you can get a full tax receipt if you ask.

Edit looks like full tax receipt with abn . You should be able to claim TRS and do tax return too.

                              • @fozzie: That's great. Thanks for confirming.

                              • @fozzie: I thought you can either do a tax return or TRS, can you actually claim both at the same time?

                                • @terroz: Yes you can. If you can’t do tax return (depending on situation) not many would do trs then. Unfortunately I’m not going overseas so only tax return for me).

                                  • @fozzie: I thought you would be double claiming on gst if you do a company tax return and trs at the same time. Sorry if i am confusing it with personal tax return

                                    • @terroz: I’m talking about personal tax return via employer.

    • +1

Also thanks. Does it have to be a cellular model?

      • I'm not sure as it's a JB offer, based on what I've seen it's ANY iPad, best to confirm with the JB guys.

    • So essentially the minimum repayment on the contract is irrelevant for someone that cancels same day?

      • Correct, minimum repayment is the total cost of 69x24 if you were to stay in the contract

    • +1

      Thanks for confirming

Does it impact the JB employee at all if you sign up and cancel? I’ve read on earlier threads that if you managed to convince someone to re-sign you onto a plan in <30 days (probably not a thing now with new Telstra back end) that the employee copped it a bit

      • +2

Weird, never heard that, each store is different I guess. It just depends if it gets flagged.

I've never experienced any issues personally, just can't openly say "cancel and you make money!".

    • Hey mate, another OzBargainer has reached out regarding this new clause that was introduced (this was never there initially)

Available to port-in and new customers only (excluding JB Upfront/Prepaid, The Good Guys Mobile & Broadband, Telstra or Boost). The JB Hi-Fi Gift Card (referred to as the “JB Hi-Fi Voucher” in the Telstra Telstra Terms and Conditions) will be available to you instore after connection approval by Telstra. The $700 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card will replace the value of the Voucher stated in the Critical Information Summary. If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term. This offer is not available in conjunction with any other JB Hi-Fi mobile or broadband offer. Gift Card subject to Terms and Conditions. Gift card offer ends 5/06/24.

Are you able to shed some light if this has been implemented?

      • Hasn't been communicated, where's this clause been found as it isn't on any CIS I've seen recently

        • Anivee on 05/06/2024 - 21:53 Comment unpublished. (Requested by Commenter)
    • +1

Exactly. Sign up, call or chat to cancel, and pay only $450 $500 ;)

      • Don't you have to pay out the contract as per the minimum repayment as per the critical information summary.

  • +1

ETA is $500 for mobile broadband not $450 as stated above

    • +2

Apologies, I had it confused for the mobile plans. Fixed now :)

      • +2

No worries mate, if you can still edit it that would be great so other members wont get confused

  • ok lets do some maths here, say you get the iPad mini 64Gb Wifi + Cellular on this plan if its eligible.
    iPad mini Cost - $1077
Cost of the iPad after the JB plan - $77 ($1000 off with the 24 months $69 plan)
Cost to early terminate - $500
Final cost of the iPad mini - $577

    Is this correct?

    • +2

$577 + $69 for the first month of service? so maybe $646

      • Telstra bill pro rata. Do it quick enough, and your bill will be a couple of dollars.

        • Not these plans. I have tried and refused.

          • @[Deactivated]: I meant the $69 component. You will still have to pay the $500.

            • @wellzi: Yes. The $69. They said these are billed upfront and can't be refunded.

      • But aren't you liable for the minimum repayment?

  • +6

"If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a voucher repayment fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan's minimum term.

    • +1

Somehow I don't think this "voucher repayment fee" is the same as the early termination fee of $500.

      • yeah it seems like you have to pay a termination fee + pay the remaining months

        • That clause is for the normal $500. This is a different promo and that clause isn’t applicable. Only the ETC matters

Can’t comment if things have changed, as when I did it it was for the S23 Ultra last year

          • @BargainsGrabber: I got that from the catalogue promo for $1000 off an iPad

          • @BargainsGrabber: The CI summary you linked to doesn't say ETC, it says "Maximum Voucher Repayment Fee", which refers to the current deal of $500.

I'd wait and see what the updated terms look like before getting too excited.

  • +1

So net $500 off an iPad? By signing up and cancelling a few days later?

    • Yeah that seems to be it? Honestly would want to confirm terms before trying this lol.

    • Why would you wait a few days?

  • do you still get the $500 JB gift card bonus from the plan? https://www.jbhifi.com.au/pages/mobile-broadband-plans

    • No, that’s replaced with the $1000 off any iPad

  • +1

Does the iPad have to be cellular and over $1k? The new Air M2 Wifi is $997, which is really good value if it works

    • I literally bought that one elsewhere earlier today for $900, thinking they won't be in a decent sale for a while since they are both Apple and new. If you can get it for $500, it's a bargain.

Let us know how you go, maybe I'll get a second one and see if I can return the first when it arrives. I'm skeptical about being able to get out of the contract for just $500 though.

Edit: you can always go with the 256gb version if for sone reason it becomes problematic that it's under $1k

      • +1

Curious, where'd you get it for $900 so soon after release?

        • $100 off $1000 purchase on eBay. I just added a $5 item I needed to hit the threshold.

    • You don’t need a data service if only buying wifi.

      • Seems like literally nobody needs a data service judging by the comments here.

        • +1

given most of our phone plans comes with more data we can use, I don't think hotspot is an issue

  • +1

Is this including with ipad m4 or just a sim cost?

  • -4

I think u need to pay the $500 termination fee plus hwo many more months left of the $69 so if it was the first month thyen you have $500 plus ($69 x 23 months) to pay
    $500 + $1 587 = over $2000
After all it is Telstra, they will not let you off the hook for just $500 plus 69 there has to be a catch somewhere a contract is a contract and you have to fulfill the contract a termination charge does not relieve you from the 24 months contract it is an additional charge to add to how many months left you have for the plan.
take $1000 off then rip you off by this low data allowance $2000 contract and that's not all, you have a bonus $500 termination fee on top of that

    • I think when you cancel early you just need to pay the voucher repayment fee to Telstra. If already have an account you don’t need to pay for the $69 just the voucher repayment fee of $500. This is the same in the mobile upfront plans in JB and TGG.

      • +1

But what's the point of the minimum repayment if you can just cancel whenever with no penalty?

        • Agree why would they allow that loophole, happy to take advantage IF they dont but seems to be very sloppy of their legal team if it is

          • +1

@Gebb: I do have same sentiments but I also understand the situation. If Telstra doesn’t have a in house legal team, this change of terms could be a cost to update. Further more, if they do change, they need to factor a lot of other situations such as ongoing spaces where this legal information is available.

Just think about all the partnerships Telstra has that uses the same CIS terms. They would require to speak to all of these companies and involve them in the process and it’s just all too much to do.

I am guessing they are happy to make the cash from the ones that don’t know how to cheat the system and happy to pay the losses.

        • +1

The penalty is paying the voucher repayment fee of $500 by just using the service for less than a month (if you cancel right away). They get money upfront without giving customers to use their service. The extra $500 you get since it currently $1000, it might be subsidised by both Telstra and JB. We don’t know what is happening in the background.

          • @AirJordan23: So what is the minimum repayment then? Why include it if there is no financial penalty for breaking contract apart from a voucher repayment? There is no cooling off period for mobile phone contracts so I'd suspect you'd be liable for the entire contract.

            • @shaughan12: One penalty is hit a on your credit. However, financial penalty as far as I know is just the voucher repayment fee as per JB staff. I believed them as I confirmed it with Telstra as soon I got the GC.

              • @AirJordan23: Sorry I misread your comment, you have actually done this and paid no penalty apart from the voucher repayment?

                • +1

@shaughan12: Yes, done this a couple of times already. With mobile broadband and mobile upfront plans. You just need to pay the voucher repayment fee. The staff at JB was the one confirmed that on VRF needs to be paid after cancellation. When you go instore ask the JB staff at the mobile department as they are the one knowledgeable on this.

    • I think you're wrong.

Source: been there, done this, many many times.

      • Was that before or after Telstra updated their CIS?
They updated it late 2 years ago. When I did it on the S23 Ultra, I had to only repay the maximum voucher repayment fee that’s stipulated in the CIS

  • +2

In the catalogue promo, it says:

"The $1000 off (referred to as the 'JB Hi-Fi Voucher' in the Telstra Terms and Conditions) … If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a voucher repayment fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan's minimum term."

    • Voucher repayment fee is found in the CIS document against the mobile plan product you are going to buy.

The English here is trying to say that the VRF ($500) is prorated on the 24 month plan.

If you cancel at 12 months, you pay a VRF of $250.

This is what I understand so far from some comments here

  • -2

against the remaining months of your plan's minimum term and then full stop. What about the remainder of the contract obligation>? It did not say that would relieve you completely free from the contract of 24 months. You still have a contract I think I would need it in writing that you are no longer in the contract for 24 months it's a contract it needs a proper writing to explicitly say after the payment of $500 your contract is void.
You got to ask yourself what's in it for them if you do this? They do not make any money at all and they are a business not Mother Theresa

  • -3
    • Yes, so what that's saying is that if the "voucher repayment fee" starts at $500, then you have to pay a pro rata amount of THAT fee to Telstra based on the amount of time left on your contract term. So, if you cancel after 12 months, your "voucher repayment fee" is only $250 and not $500.

      • +1

Right, but if you go to the JB URL, the old voucher was $500, and the terms linked there would relate to that. The new voucher is $1000, so it seems likely that a new voucher repayment fee would be pro-rated against that $1000. It's an in-store only deal.

  • The critical information summary sheet you’ve attached doesn’t seem correct as the ad seems to state for port in new mobile numbers so you would think that would be regarding your mobile and not a data sim number for the iPad?

    • +2

Data sim might have a number?

      • +2

        They sure do

  • Interested in the below

What happens when I cancel my plan early?
You’ll need to repay Telstra for any vouchers you received
when you purchased your plan. The Voucher Repayment Fee
(if applicable) is pro-rated, equal to the total amount of the
base voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by months (or
part months) remaining in your plan term.

My reading of that is they would cancel/make you repay the full amount and not the amount in the table listed on the critical information summary or is the extra $500* considered a bonus on top of the 'base' $500?

Also it states any iPad, could you not just buy a non cellular with the intention of cancelling?

  • Surely the $500 everyone is mentioning is this
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/pages/mobile-broadband-plans
    Where the voucher was $500

Also the CIS literally says minimum cost $1656 for the $69 * 24 month plan

    • Correct. The terms aren't updated to reflect the $1000 voucher. It's an in-store only deal. It's likely that the voucher repayment fee for early cancelation is pro-rated against the $1000 voucher, not $500.

      • Even the current voucher is greater than the minimum voucher repayment on CIS, you just need to pay what is on CIS. I did it before, $1400 GC just paid $800 as per CIS

        • What about the minimum cost on the contract?

          • @Soldier: When I asked Telstra, they said I just have to pay $799.95 to cancel my plan with JB. I thought you still need to pay the $99 first month but if you have an account already with Telstra, no need to pay the first month.

            • @AirJordan23: It sounds like you may be right. However it would be wise for people to get it confirmed in-store before signing up.

  • +12

This is not going to end well….

  • -3

is it possible to then return the iPad for a free JB gift card?

  • So how much will it be the total cost if you cancel straight away?

    • +1

      Depends on which iPad

  • +1

So, which iPad is the best value with $1000 off? Any suggestions? Thanks.

    • +2

Seems like the new iPad Air 11 M2 for $1247 or the 10th-gen iPad (released last year) for $1087.

      Spec comparison here.

      • Do you have to get one with cellular or can you get the non-Cellular version? For the sake of being able to apply the promotion I mean for cases where you are planning on just canceling anyway

        • Good question – it does say "any" iPad, so might be able to just get a Wi-Fi version instead, in which case the M2 iPad Air would be closer to the $1000 price point

        • +1

Based on the dummy application applied by the staff, it is definitely any iPad available instore

        • People have reported wifi versions work.

  • +6

Looking forward to seeing successful cases

  • Doesn't this affect your credit score?

    • It shouldn't.

  • +4

Just spoke to an JB hifi online rep and advised going into the store for definitive answer, will report back.

    • waiting

    • Following as well

    • Waiting for you respond, it would be bargain if an ipad worth $600ish otherwise im $1000 poorer for something i dont need.

      • It does work however it's not worth it, see my comment below. On the cheaper iPads they'll throw in a case for you etc. for some of the remaining value but you're better off getting the $1000~ range and paying $69 upfront then $500 for the cancellation.

        • Any idea, if the voucher would allow two cheaper iPads?

          • @Moon57: I didn't ask this but probably should have, they may allow this as technically it's just a $1000 gift card off iPad with the broadband sign up as the plan mentions nothing of an iPad just a voucher. They just scan the gift card in front of you. Would have to ask though, when I asked if I could get the 10th Gen then use the remaining on the gift card for other JB items they said they could only provide iPad accessories but it mighht be possible, never know unless you go

  • +5

Went in today and can confirm it works on any iPad. Got the iPad air m2 11 inch 128gb wifi for $0 upfront ($997 on sale). They charged me the $69 on the spot and can confirm JB rep told me the cancellation fee is $500 only due to their system not registering it as $1000 so this may change. But my contract says $500 voucher repayment fee for cancellation. However if you use the plan for 12 months and then cancel the repayment fee would only be $250 it's based off the remaining months so $500/24 for each month you've paid. Basically if I cancel now I've paid $569 for the iPad Air M2.

    • +1

Thanks for confirming this :) I will pop in Jb Hifi tomorrow night hopefully.

    • If this works then it is excellent. Please care to share final amount if you have already cancelled and paid?

Should have gone for 256gb then may be.

      • +1

Why 256gb? Op bought the 128gb for $569 (once he cancels). The 256gb would be 569+173= $742

If you don’t need double storage it’s a lot of iPad for $569.

        • +1

Very true. Didn't know it was that much more.

        • +1

If you get a good staff member they can do deals. The 128GB I asked about wifi only he would do for $910 so you could probably get the 256GB for $1100 so only really $100 extra out of pocket for double storage is a good deal. Unfortunately for me no one locally had the 256GB

      • Will do, I will be cancelling tomorrow morning as I have been charged for the $69 first month and the broadband will be cancelled straight away but would rather not wait it out. However contract definitely states $500 repayment fee and JB rep confirmed this (I think they knew that was my plan to begin with). I wanted to pay $0 upfront and didn't need the extra storage space but definitely good value in some of the other options around $1000~. Almost went for the 13" instead it's massive! However they did say the $500 repayment is a current glitch in the system due to their earlier offer.

        • Very good point! Will be going tomorrow night, fingers crossed it all goes to plan. Thanks

      • +2

Hi I have just cancelled now. $480 cancellation fee and $69 charge in total, even though they charged on the spot it actually never came out of my account? So it may just be taken out down the line or I scored the iPad for $480. Either way $550 in total for the M2 Air is a steal and was already looking at an ipad 10th Gen for the same price for my girlfriend :) definitely a bargain

        • +1

Will try to sign up tomorrow should I ask early termination fees?

        • Thank you for sharing

  • +1

    I went with this:

$77 for the ipad mini wifi 256gb ($1000 off)
$69 for the first month (non refundable)
    $479 for cancelation charge
    = $625

    • have you cancelled plan already? Any issues from Telstra?

      • +1
