This previously popular portable monitor from ASUS ZSUS is back and a tad cheaper than last time. A good option for those looking for something a bit smaller at 14" with 1440p resolution and 350cd/m² brightness. I personally use these alongside my laptop when travelling for work and given the small size it can easily fit in my backpack.

Featuring a 14" IPS display with 2160x1440 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, 15:10 aspect ratio, 100% sRGB colour gamut, 350cd/m² brightness, HDR, 178° wide viewing angle, dual speakers and weighs 500g.

There's two USB-C ports for display/power and power input, PD passthrough charging, Mini HDMI and a headphone jack. A portable stand, Mini HDMI to HDMI cable, USB-A to USB-C cable, USB-C to USB-C cable and charger are included.

    Asus quality at Zsus price?

    • +49

The A to Z of sus

      • +1

i guess this sus is at the other end of the A-Z spectrum

        • +1

          The omega of sussy bakas.

Who is downvoting these comments? I've just sat through several sets at the comedy festival. This is better material than 90% of them!

      • +14

        Who is downvoting these comments?

        Asus employee's

        • +10

That’s quite the Asusmption you’re making.

      • Comedy festival comedians.

Good to see more portable monitors getting more affordable. Wish there was an epic deal for 18.5 incher too

    • is it still portable at 18.5" ?

      • +1

It's not going to have a chunky stand sticking out at the bottom.

      • portable that i dont gotta move big ass monitor with the power and display cords each time i wfh

        • Gotta love USB C

  • +6

Still love a good monitor or powerbank repost, even if not everyone agrees…

  • +6

Very cool little monitor - great value. In saying that, I'd pay a $20-30 premium for 120Hz if it was an option - as I'm a bit of a snob that notices the 60Hz when I roll over to it.

  • +5

happy with mine, would recommend, but the stand is a bit profanity

    • +2

Yes, the stand is a bit flimsy, probably the one thing I don't like about it. though anything more substantial may make it heavier. But a simple plastic stand from AliExpress might do the trick.

    • How do you actually use the stand? Mine keeps falling over if I use it???

      • +1

I have an (actual) Asus portable monitor and it doesn't even come with a stand - need to use its case as the stand so it takes up far too much room.

I've ended up using a large phone stand as the stand for the monitor instead.

        Like this https://www.temu.com/ul/kuiper/un9.html?subj=goods-un&_bg_fs…

apologies for the late reply, but hopefully this helps

(idk if im doing it right but this seems to work)

      • +2

I've found that if you have it such that the stand is essentially "poking" the back of the screen, it works much better and is quite stable, like this.

    • Do you have a photo of the monitor with the stand? I couldn't find any in the store photos.
      Thanks

      • +2

The stand is atrocious. I’ve 3d printed my own. PM me if you want the file.

        • +5

I did the same - and mounted it above my main screen. Now waiting for the PLA to melt and have an $80 monitor destroy a definitely not $80 monitor XD.

        • what stand did you end up printing? or did you make your own

      • +2

Go to the listing and you'll see other peoples photos of them unpacking/using it. Its a pretty crap design by the looks of it.

      • +1

apologies for the late reply, but hopefully this helps

(idk if im doing it right but this seems to work)

    • +3

So I've found that using the stand the way they have it in their example photo is terrible because the smaller middle joint is too weak. However, if you invert the joint so that the stand is essentially "poking" the back of the screen, it works much better and is quite stable, like this, because the bigger joint is much stronger.

      • thanks for the tip - will try this!

  • +4

I bought this one about 6+ months ago and I am still very impressed. I don't use it that often (maybe 1-3 times a month), it just sits in my work backpack. I'm not much of a videophile, so I can't bang on about the contrast, gamut or anything, but I've used this in different lighting situations across different locations and works great as a secondary work screen. Haven't tried gaming, video-editing or photoshop but definitely a great buy for work or casual use. Upvote from me!

    • Is it pretty bright with direct sunlight?

      • +6

Here is a photo I just took at an RSL club in front of a window. It's not "direct sunlight" per se but there is still lots of glare. But not significantly worst than my Dell Latitude 5520.

  • +1

Anyway to use this as a wireless monitor?

    • +1

Yes just plug in a Powerbank and a Chromecast / Firestick.

      But why ?

      • It's only HDMI Mini, so would you have to get a hdmi to mini converter for Google TV?

        • +1

          Yep.

    • Wireless hdmi transmitter/receiver?

    • +1

Either a Chromecast or a wireless display adaptor. The protocol windows uses is Miracast. From a brief search the Miracast dongles seem to be a bit hit or miss though.

  • +1

Can it run purely off USB-C?

    • +1

      Yes

      • Yes, when I bought this one it came with a cable that allows for power and video/audio pass through but then I lost it and those cables are exxxxxxxxxxxxy!

        • +2

It would just be a USB-C to USB-C 3.0/3.1 5Gbps cable. You can get those pretty cheap around AliExpress. Even a 10Gbps cable that's completely overkill.

  • Hmm, time to build a mini dreamcast cabinet. A bit overkill though.

  • +3

who needs ASUS when you have ZSUS

  • "Can't afford a Asus, but we can afford a Zsus!"

    • I cannot afford A -> Z.

    • We got Asus at home

    • Great for failure management.

  • Interested in one of these, as an ext mon for a phone to watch prime tv or kodi movies from nas, or sth. Is that a good idea?
Also do these ever sell on amazon at near prices?

    • Yep if your phone allows video out, i.e. Samsung Dex or Motorola Ready For this will work just fine. There's been a few Amazon deals that have gone low.

      • I got this usb to hdmi thing, i think those VAVA USB C Hub Adapter X in 1 things. I was hoping that would plug into the phone and then hdmi out the other end….?

        • Sure if the phone supports video over USB-C.

        • As Clear said, a lot of phones don't support video out, so worth checking.

  • +3

Don't care about ASUS or ZSUS. Or I care about is my MISSUS 🤣

    • Brownie points for you!

    • Buy now, ask for forgiveness later.

  • Question about power delivery.

If I plug a USB C power source into the monitor, and the monitor into a laptop USB PD slot, can the power source for the monitor power the laptop?

    • +2

Yep, I use it for my switch and laptop like this.

    • +2

Yes but only at about 10W supply to the laptop.

      • Good to know… that is not enough to charge a laptop. Might make it discharge mildly slower.

    • Is it possible to do the other way around? Power this monitor and video signal over the same cable from the laptop?

      • +2

Yes. I run power cable from the wall to MacBook Pro. Then single usb cable from MacBook Pro to this monitor to supply power and signal to it.

  • I assume Thinnest pt 2.7 inches is not accurate?

  • -1

Will this be good with and Xbox?

    • Won't be bad, but won't exactly be good either.

      • Thinking might work with 2nd Xbox in same room for ad-hoc Lan party for the kids

        • +1

It'll work, but good luck reading text etc unless you're sitting really close - modern games are designed for big screens. This is absolutely tiny in comparison.

Go for at least the 18" widescreen model if you really want to do this.

  • Has anybody got a big one of these and mounted it to a wall for home use? I often use my laptop screen but might be nice / aesthetic option.

    • +1

It does not have a fitting for a vesa attachment, if that's what you are wondering……

  • Can it work as second screen for MacBook Pro?

    • +1

      Yes. I do this

    • I use one as my remote working setup, pwoered by the macbook.

It's very close in dimensions to a 14" macbook pro - i.e. basically the same size & aspect ratio.

  • +1

Note this is not 16:9, so probably not ideal for game consoles, streaming sticks, or watching movies. Best for productivity only.

  • +1

Anyone use this for Samsung DEX?

  • I have one of these, great addition as a second monitor for laptop.

  • So how flimsy is the built in stand? The gentle breeze can topple it?

    • +2

Yep. It's a screen cover that feels like it's made from cardboard, it flips over to the back side and becomes the stand. Indoors it's ok, sometimes I forget that it's not a touchscreen and the stand collapses like a house of cards. I've accumulated several weeks of use from it now and although the stand is a bit shite, it's super compact and portable. It's ok so long as you don't touch it after you've stood it up.

  • I'm not very savvy when it comes to this sort of stuff, so please excuse my question if it is stupid.

Is this something that could be used a screen for my toddler in the rear seat of the car? Like mount to the front seat and then stream from phone/usb? Does something like what I'm describing even exist?

    • +2

You can but you would need one cable for power and another for a mini hdmi adaptor to hdmi and then use a chrome cast to mirror your phone. Kids will yank everything in a minute.

      • Thanks for the heads up. This makes sense. Guess I'll stick to some form of tablet. Any reccommendation for cheap tablet for this purpose?

        • Plenty of cheap android tablets on aliexp for sub $150

          • @jattsta: Thanks jattsta. Any you would reccommend?

      • It works off usbc so if you just run cable into iphone it will mirror the screen and you can play videos games etc. it will obviously use the battery in the phone of course so not for long drives. Unless u plug another powered usbc into the 2nd port on monitor.

  • About to pull the trigger - but should I be concerned that it says 'EU Plug'?

    • Nope

    • +2

Its usb, powered…. use a spare charger or usb port…..

  • +1

no, as it's USB C powered - the EU plug will be the charging adaptor, which everyone has dozens of

  • Considering turning one of these into a digital photo frame, any thoughts?

    • +1

What will you connect it to for handling the images?

      • +1

Raspberry Pi - it's more about the picture quality in a mid brightness setting and the physical shape and design - I was strongly considering hiding it all inside a deep / thick, actual photoframe?

    • +4

If you have some kind of data source for input- sure! Those digital photo frames usually had a SD card reader or USB port on the back and a rudimentary operating system that allowed you to choose folders, configure slideshow settings etc. If you just had a static image I'd be scared of it burning the image into the screen over time - like this

Would end up like this: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GKwX5g-acAAt8xX.jpg

      • Thinking Raspberry Pi - more about the panel and hiding the panel making it actually look nice.

    • has HDMI so chuck a Raspberry pi zero-W on it with some photo frame software!, super cheap

  • What are people using these for?

    • +1

Working remotely for an extended period of time which isn't my usual desk with a dock setup.
Say I have to work from grandma's house for a few days, I take my laptop and this screen with me, I've got a short, right angled USB-C 3.1 cable (won't work with earlier versions) so I can push the monitor up snug to my laptop screen. Now I've got enough screen realestate to work without being triggered. I use it every 3 or 4 months, its quite handy.

    • dual monitor laptop whilst on the train!
also dual monitor laptop whilst I can't use the home office and sat in the car or garage or living room, you get the idea.

shame it's not touch or i'd use it for a Home Assistant screen!

    • +1

Super-ultrawide user here. I use this little one as a secondary Discord/Spotify/YouTube/note-taking-app display.

    • I have a portable monitor (not this specific one) VESA mounted to a monitor arm attached to my treadmill so I can do work while walking.

Otherwise, these things usually make fantastic secondary monitors for your WFH productivity setup.

These little monitors really are great for the price — much better than getting something like a fullsize and much heavier 24" 1080p FHD monitor. The biggest downside is that the cheaper models like the one in this deal lack a VESA mount, so it becomes trickier to get a good stand/mounting solution.
