Thought just mention it for those unsure about the details, thats all.

        • Thanks mate, this was helpful, as I signed up a few days ago and was wondering when do I get those credits and points

  • +2

I know ahm is part of Medibank. If I'm with ahm and churn to Medibank am I still eligible for this? (As I technically am a Medibank customer if ahm is considered Medibank for this t n C purpose)

  • +1

Damn these extras a quite low compared to AHM.

    • How much will 6 weeks free save you in comparison.

      • $260. But for comparison, the same $ gets me a lot more extras with AHM compared to Medibank.

        • And is that saving worth it to you? I mean, will you be claiming any extras while with Medibank on this promotion? If not, take the savings and don't worry yourself about any reduced extras limits.

  • any idea if the extra can be removed and only retain the hospital cover, later?

    • +1

After the promotional terms have been met, you can do what you like.

If you want to continue to maintain health insurance, your best (biggest $ savings) option would be to churn to a new fund.

  • i join medibank 2-3 times a year to get live better points

    • +1

Do you lose your points balance when you switch or they are still there when you rejoin?

      • +1

Would also like to know this. Do you know @YesPleaseThankYou

        • I recall it being covered in the Live Better terms (where you would expect to see it).

      • +1

If you take a new policy within 6 months after you cancel the previous one, then your points won't be lost (I remember this is the rule but it is worth to check with them again)

        • +2

That sounds right but I wouldn't bother checking with Medibank.

Ask 3 Medibank reps the same thing, you'll get 3 different answers.

Read the terms and keep a copy. That's the definitive answer.

  • Just a word of caution about multiple churns especially a year, but the son of one of the parent's friends had churned so much that when he discovered he had stage 3 cancer, no fund would cover him as the funds were arguing as to when the cancer could have actually started, which would then affect which fund would be responsible for covering the treatments.

    • +1

In Australia? There's more to this story that you or we do not know about.

The fund (health insurance) that would be paying for the treatments is the fund active at the time the costs were incurred.

It's not like they were making a payout for damages and there were multiple insurers liable - that's when you'll have insurers arguing about percentage of liability.

Someone with cancer (or any other condition) could join an Australian health fund today for the first time in their life and, once the 12-month waiting period was served out, that fund would be liable to pay. See, eg, Completely Ruptured My ACL & Have No Private Health Insurance. Please Recommend a Provider

      • In Australia. Supposedly he was churning multiple funds in the same year and the funds were arguing which should be responsible. Anyway not one fund would cover him and had to go public. It was a long time ago though.

There's probably more to it but that's all I heard down the grape vine. Perhaps he was also swapping up and down levels of cover too so may have been stuck in waiting periods.

        • Perhaps he was also swapping up and down levels of cover too so may have been stuck in waiting periods.

          This could be why.

Yes, there are a lot of unknowns in this story.

          • @YesPleaseThankYou: You have to maintain same level of cover everytime you churn.

For example im always on bronze plus and whatever the max extras are

            • @easternculture:

You have to maintain same level of cover everytime you churn

              That's not true.

I think you mean to say that if you increase from one level to the next, you will need to serve the waiting period/s for that higher level of cover.

              • @YesPleaseThankYou: You have to at least maintain the same cover when moving funds, otherwise my may have to serve 12 months waiting period. Best way is choose the cover you need and stay on it

For example, if you are young bronze or bronze plus is enough as you will less likely need a joint replacememt, dialysis, palliative care or heart/lung surgery.

As you get older , then you could bump the level to cover conditions you need.

Offcourse, all this depends on your pre existing health

  • Thank you. Signed up the deal.

  • I'm currently with ahm.

I jumped onto Medibank Live Chat to see if ahm plans were eligible to transfer from (to receive this deal) but received 2 different answers from the same agent before they abruptly closed the chat.

I might Medibank an email to get written confirmation.

    • Hi, did you manage to switch? I am currently with AHM too.

      • Same, interested to know.

Be careful with this mob below are the conditons you must meet to get the offers. They didnt give me the 50k points saying I didnt track and activity within 28 days which I did…

Every time I have churned to Medibank, I have had to follow-up to get the promotional offer.

Like NIB, Medibank is best avoided unless there's no other fund with a suitable promotion at the time you're looking.

  • Has anyone been successful with get HCF to match Medibank current promotions - 6 weeks + gift card? If the premium is only $2 different per month, would you choose HCF or Medibank?

    • +1

6 weeks free is worth more than $2 per month.

      • What I meant is both offering 6 weeks free but no gift card from HCF, and the premium is $2 different per month. What’s the experience of claiming between the two?

        • I'm not sure which HCF promotion you're referring to, but HCF promotions typically have a longer qualifying period. This diminishes the value of the offer.

You're not comparing apples with apples.

You ask about claiming, what experience re you referring to you? You submit your claim, and they pay.

Join and maintain eligible Bronze hospital and extras cover or above

How can I tell what bronze policies are eligible?
    What policies are above bronze?

    Question for the PHI pros.
Not sure I'm going to get into the churning game on this but I am about to make a switch. My first ever switch so taking it slow and carefully reading the T&Cs.

There is a tick box to confirm that I have held my previous cover for a minimum of 12 months. I assume this is so they can confirm that I've had my level (Bronze, Silver, Gold) and my level of extras so I don't have to meet any waiting periods. If I were to switch away from this company after some months, I would not be able to tick this box. How would the next company confirm that I have had the same level (Silver to Silver) and same extrasfor the requisite period? What do you churners do or does this not appear on every application?

    • +1

When you join a new PHI provider, they will contact your old provider health insurance provider to request the cancellation of your previous membership and a transfer certificate (a record of your health insurance cover) which contains the following:

-Type of cover (e.g. hospital, general treatment, combined
      -Level of cover
      -Your join date
      -Your cancellation date
-Your Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) Certified Age of Entry
-A history of your recent claims

So they have all the information they need from the clearance certificate request from the previous health provider. Also, I've churned to a few providers where I've not seen a "12 month previous cover" tick box selection in the application process.

      • +1

When you join a new PHI provider, they will contact your old provider health insurance provider to request the cancellation of your previous membership and a transfer certificate

Only if you authorise it. I prefer to handle the cancellation myself via email, as the insurers sometimes get the dates wrong.

Also, I've churned to a few providers where I've not seen a "12 month previous cover" tick box selection in the application process

Agreed. I haven't seen this either and I churn 5+ times per annum.

        • +1

          Thanks @Charlieeee and @YesPleaseThankYou. That's really helpful.

I'll call tomorrow to get my transfer certificate and Private Health Insurance Statement and won't worry about the "12 month previous cover" tick box.

@YesPleaseThankYou, your admonitions to read the T&Cs is already paying off. I'm now seeing loads of ads now with 6 weeks free here or 10 weeks free there or giftcards, etc etc. Reading the T&Cs shows quickly the 10 weeks offer is for 6 weeks in year one and 4 weeks in year two. The devil is in the details.

    • +1

There is a tick box to confirm that I have held my previous cover for a minimum of 12 months.

Strange. The fund is going to want to see any Transfer Certificates you have anyway, so I don't understand why it would need to ask you that.

How would the next company confirm that I have had the same level (Silver to Silver) and same extrasfor the requisite period?

The fund is required by law to supply you, and if you authorise it, your new fund, with a Transfer Certificate. This document has all the new fund needs to process your application and apply the correct waiting periods. See Clearance Certificates.

Some funds will ask for transfer certificates going back 1 or 2 years.

What do you churners do …

Keep your transfer certificates, together with the related Private Health Insurance Statement (PHIS), readily available, so you can easily send these to the new fund.

      • Have you have been knocked back for cover by the insurer for repetitive churning?

        • Never.

For what reason? For taking advantage of a promotion based on terms the fund has, itself, set?

      • @YesPleaseThankYou, when you say PHI Statements - keep your transfer statements with your PHI statements readily available - are these statements the TAX statements? I've downloaded all of those, one per financial year.
But if these statements are something different, I'm a bit lost. i can't find anything called that and agent didn't seem to know either.

      • Bupa told me they are sending through the Transfer Cert directly to Medibank. I requested for it and they said what I will get is a cancellation certificate?

        • +1

The terms 'Transfer Certificate' and 'Clearance Certificate' are used interchangeably.

The legislation refers to 'Transfer Certificate'.

  • Am on the phone with medibank now have been with them for past 2 years and asking them to give me promo to retain me, have told me government mandates that PHI can not give over 12% discount in promos to retain customer. No idea of this is true or not but I have heard this a few times from different customer service reps from medibank. They will give you combo of points/ weeks off to retain you as long as it’s within 12% of your policy. I was offered 12% off my policy at first and i asked if they could match $250 and 6 weeks free, no go. Now waiting for confirmation if I can get 10k points and 4 weeks free

  • code not working as trying to sign up.

    • Maybe you didn't choose a bronze package? Working for me now

  • How long until the live better points arrive after account activation? Do I have to call?

    • +1

"Must maintain direct debit and hold eligible product for 42 consecutive days from the policy start date to receive Live Better points… Live Better points could take up to 10 weeks from the policy start date to be loaded to the policyholder’s Live Better account."

  • What stopping you join, claim G/C, claim extras then cancel after free period ? Trying to understand whole PHI and churn culture

    • +1

      Nothing.

      • Is there minimum period you have to be with one provider before you cancel ? Or move to another provider ?

        • +1

No. Hold the policy for one day, if you like.

However, if you are joining under a promotion, and you want to receive the benefit of that promotion, you'll need to hold the relevant policy for any minimum term required under that promotion.
